Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)

Q: Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)

This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted.

1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues.
2. I reformatted and everything was normal..but then after installing these few programs, the problem began again.

Preferred Solution: Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello. First off, having utorrent effectively craps you out on this forum since it has a bad rep. Suggest you remove it and come back, start a new thread. That said, if you're familiar with Task Manager, check the CPU percentage on the processes tab (click CPU column to sort). This may help pinpoint which app(s) are whack.

I recently installed an evga nvidia 8600gt video card. Vista 32 bit starts up fine but my idle cpu usage sits at 50%, and I can't shut down or restart properly and the system will hand after 30 minutes or so. I just end up having to hold in the power button. I have the latest drivers and it's still doing the same thing. When I pull the 8600gt out and put in my old 7300gs, cpu usage at idle is at 0% and vista shuts down and restarts fine. Vista runs fine otherwise and I can play games without a problem. Any suggestions before I rma the video card?

A:8600gt causing high cpu idle usage

I "RMA'd" my 8600 gt. Not because of the idle problem, but because it dawned on me that for $100 more I could own the 8800 GTS 320mb. It not only idles well but it's about 3 times better than the 8600.

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Here is the log:

I noticed a couple weeks ago my laptop's cpu fan had been cranking even when I was only surfing the internet or typing something up in Microsoft word. I've been monitoring the CPU usage over those last few weeks and when the computer is idle the cpu usage hovers anywhere between 25%-60% with no programs open.

I started looking around the internet for solutions. I did a full computer scan with Norton Antivirus which caught a few small bugs. Then restarted the computer and now it runs around 25%-45% when idle.

I downloaded Process Explorer to show more of what was bogging down the cpu. At the top of the list was "System Idle Process" in the cpu column reads between 60-70. Also AppleMobileDeviceService.exe in the cpu column is between 20-25. Everything else was close enough to 0 that it wouldn't make a difference. I'm not sure what this means or how I should go about fixing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:High CPU usage when laptop is idle

Here is an Apple article I found about AppleMobileDeviceService.exe high CPU use.
AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is hogging up to %50 of CPU

Looks like a lot of people have this issue, and a lot of theories on how to solve it...

The fan in my laptop has been running fast and non-stop as of recently. Even when it's idle. I had it dust-cleaned about 2 weeks ago but, if anything, it's only gotten worse since then.

The idle temps of the CPU, GPU and HDD are all around 50?C (the GPU temp rises quickly into around 70?C if I e.g. open a semi-graphic intensive website) which seems rather high to me, but I thought someone here might be more knowledgeable in that area.

So, I guess my question is: Is it normal for a 2 year old laptop (that has been recently cleaned) to have idle temps at around 50?C with the fan running constantly on almost full power?

See attached image for more info

A:High idle temps

Well they do make laptop cooler pads for a reason.
I did want to ask if the cpu and gpu temperature are always the same, because that just doesn't seem right?

Have you opened your task manager and checked that there isn't a process in the background that is eating up a lot of cpu time? Even for a laptop that seems a tad warm... not seriously, but enough to be looking for a reason.

Edit: you may also choose to look into one of these.

Everything was fine with my GPU until around a week or two ago. I noticed my computer was running loud and checked my GPU software and it said that my computer was running around 70C with the temperature being around 76 (Fahrenheit) inside! I turned it off and let it sit for a while and turned it back on and it still went up to 70C!

Before when I used my computer my GPU would run around 35C on idle when the temperature outside (I keep my windows open for anything under 72F) was in the 60s, but now it is in the 60s outside with this recent cold front and my GPU is running close to 55-60C on IDLE.

Here is a pic of its current status (Room temperature < 60F):
I just took the manufacturing thermal paste off and put some Arctic Silver on it and the temperature came down to around 50-55C now, but that is still WAAAAY to high for a computer on idle.

My air flow in my computer should be fine, it was working fine how I set it up a few months ago, I have just recently started having problems with my GPU, but haven't changed a thing on the inside of my case.

Any ideas?

Good evening to you !

I am currently using an Asus Laptop X7BS (which is almost 4 years old, and is a "beta" version of the N-serie), running Windows 7, and having a couple of problems, meaning:
- images take a while to load on Opera (which may seem anecdotical, but quite often, they take a while (up to 30 seconds), or don't even load at all, without nonetheless displaying the typical "image link broken")
- all in all, he is getting slow. Slow in the sense I have framerate drops when starting Opera, not to mention games (like League of Legend, which does not ask for too high performance)
- of the four displayed processor kernels, the first tends to be at maximum even when the computer is idle ("idle" in the sense I'm not doing anything on it)
- it is thus running hot almost permanently (~70° according to SpeedFan)
Then, I got a message this afternoon from my antivirus, which is Avira Free version, saying that it has detected "ADWARE/iBryte.bxoq" right here:
C:\Windows\TEMP\tmp00004090\tmp0000001f
And not just once, but a forty-ish times.

Thus, right now, I am thinking about reinstalling my Windows 7 from scratch. However, I am wondering if there is a way to avoid doing so - as some programs are a real pain to reinstall (I am looking at you, Office 2010, PTC Creo, LabView).

Could some spare some time helping me ?

Thank you a lot,

Have a good night,
Icomenid

Hi,

It happened twice. My CPU idle temps increased A LOT after windows updates (Ultimate 64). And not just after rebooting, but all day long. Just in idle. When I start any work on the laptop, it drops to normal levels. Scary, cause I make pauses often and let it shutdown the screen and sleep. What a surprised when I return to work and check it reached 70?C when it was supposed to be cooler than before, obviously. Once I touch the mouse and resume working, it drops fastly and everything seems to be normal. WTF? And it?s happening only after updates, and only on Ultimate, because when I had Home Premium it never occured.
Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry for bad english.

A:High idle CPU temps after last updates

Well you didn't do the same updates on the HP as you just did on Ultimate.

In any event maybe one of the updates is running something when the system is idle and or it has fooled with the SpeedStep function and or fan controls so they don't turn on when idle. Once you start using the system the fans turn on and cool the system down.

Uninstall the latest updates and see if that fixes it.
If it does then do one update at a time until you find the one that is causing this problem.

Hi all
I've got 2 HD5870's in crossfire that have been running fine for about 8 months but now the fans are running very fast after boot. AMD Catalyst is reporting temps of 90-92 degrees and fan speeds of 60% when I have no applications running. I've checked Task Manager and nothing seems out of the norm ( at least checking CPU/RAM usage, that doesn't reflect on GPU usage). I've run a full AVG scan which shows no naughties so any idea's or comments from previous experiences would be appreciated

A:GPU registering high temps at idle

I'd do a visual inspection of the cards, look for dust and dirt on the fans and cooling systems.
If needed use compressed air to remove dust. Possibly outside your house.

My computer used to run great! Everything was fine and Core/GPU temps were low. About last week is when this started happening. Cores were at 38-45 idle, now there super high.

Specs
Gigabyte AM2+ Motherboard (Model #: GA-MA78GPM-DS2H)
AMD Phenom II X4 925
Sapphire ATI HD 5770
4GB DDR2 RAM
hec X-Power Pro 650W

Temps
Cores: 59 degrees (Current, Hardware Monitor+Firefox open)
GPU: 41 degrees

Problem
Can't diagnose a problem! Don't know how or were to find out whats going on. I'm leaning towards getting a new heatsync/fan to lower cpu temps and see if that works but I dont got the money atm. I lag in most games after a while of playing. The stutter gets worse and worse the longer I play.
If you need any other information, please ask. Thanks!

A:High CPU temps. Causing lag in games? Help!

If your current cooling solution was working not that long ago, instead of replacing it I would try applying new thermal grease. Any chance it got knocked around or anything maybe that could of caused the cpu to not make good contact...a long shot but.

Hi.

In this order,
If you had made any changes\overclocking set back everything back to default settings.

Remove RivaTuner/EVGA Precision/MSI Afterburner (known issues w/Win7) from your system.

RivaTuner

Download and install Driver Sweeper

Download the most recent software\driver for your NVIDIA

Uninstall nvidia software\driver,restart in safe mode, run driver sweeper, choose only NVIDIA-Display and clean, restart in normal mode.

Install the new ati software\driver,restart.

Update DirectX

Read carefully this tutorial and run NVIDIA/AMD Video Card - Test with OCCT post here the results.
Run RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Leave it to run overnight if possible.

Finish and post back.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I've seen a few posts about this, but none too recent and none that specifically address how long to expect this to keep on...

Situation: Allowed windows to update this morning, it did several updates, and six in particular I suspect of being the cause of this "problem". I suspect the .NET Framework updates (6 today...!) to be the root of my high usage issue. I say high, but it's around 20%,sometimes shooting up to 40-60%. Usually I idle around 2%. Temps are now at CPU ~40C; MB ~30C. These are usually around 35C & 27C.

Oh,and I updated at around 11:30 AM, and its now 1:40PM.

Here's the build: No overclocking.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
AMD Phenom II x6 1100T w/ CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus
OCZ Agility 3 (installed on Saturday; optimized for the OS) primary disk--no activity showing.
Thermaltake Chaser MK1 (more big fans than you ever need)
16GB RAM (not important)
And some other stuff not pertinent to the issue.

How long do you all think I should expect this behavior? I want to play a game dangit! Thanks for any input, and questions.

UPDATE: I just checked resource monitor and while I've never used it before, it shows a wmiprvse.exe at CPU 15, everything else is bouncing around at 0-2. i searched this online, but nothing but a Windows Server fix. What gives?

A:High CPU usage & higher temps after windows updates: How long?

Okay, this is REALLY strange. I individually uninstalled all updates from today and nothing seemed to matter. Okay, I uninstalled a patch for a steam game that I downloaded yesterday. No difference. Then, I turned off the "Drives Meter" gadget for my desktop, and voila. CPU back to 0-2%. Restarted to make sure it wasn't a fluke, and sure enough still low CPU. What the heck? Until today, this was never a problem. I really liked that Drives Meter. Since this is Windows and not Linux (can't use Conky), anyone have any other suggestions. I'll mark this solved right away if anyone says they have some idea of why this happened today; also, if no one cares, I'll mark it in a bit.

I have issues with what process explorer describes as being a hardware interrupt, it uses between 25-99% of one of the cores capability and seems to use approximately 500-700mb of ram.
i have tried as much as i can muster.
Does anyone have any ideas that could save me a reinstall of my o/s.
i have called HP support but they seem more intent on, brushing me off, half assed guidance, or finding ways out of honouring my warranty than giving sound advice.

I am sad to say that when these type of issues come up, HP, nor MS would be able to find a solution for you.

Put it down to experience and reinstall Vista. And straight after Vista is installed and running good, then do a backup image of Vista using something like Acronis TrueImage. In this way, if anything like this happens again in the future, you simply restore the Vista image and in 10 minutes you are running good again.

I have 16GB of ram and usage is extremely high while PC is in idle. 99% ram usage and 70-80% quite often. When i start the computer it's fine and then it starts slowly to increase to as i said 70-80 and finally 99%. Computer doesn't lag or lacks of performance even when 99% of the ram is used ?! If you know how to fix that s..t pls aa and that happens in win 10 and win 7 also
I checked task manager to see which process uses that much memory but nothing appeared to be out of order. Could it be some kind of virus ?

Hi guys! I'm Pig and I'm new!

I got my pc 3 years ago. It's a windows xp sp3. Three days ago I reformatted my computer because of some silly driver glitch. (I couldn't seem to finish installation of my printer's driver and my wireless internet card driver for some reason)

Now with all updated drivers and such, usually my cpu usage ranges between 3% to 9 %. But it's jumping between 27% to 55% with no running program. I thought it was simply dust so I cleared them completely off, no dice.

My system is:
Windows XP sp3 Professional
AMD Athlon Processor LE 1640
2.59Ghz, 3.25 GB of ram (which I swore I though I threw 4gb of ram in my computer)

I dun know much about computers aside from playing games and Microsoft Word/Mozilla for schoolwork. Please tell me what other info is needed to solve this annoying problem. Thanks so much! Onegaishimasu!

Hello Everyone,

Firstly, please forgive me if any of the below requests are ignorant, I am new to the world of troubleshooting Windows 7 this thoroughly.

Overview:

I have had a perpetual issue with CPU Usage and have tried several different methods of eradicating the issue without much success. After a lot of trial and error I do believe the issue lies with open services/processes that I am not confident of disabling. Could someone please help me understand or locate the resource hog.

Specs:

I currently have a new system: AS ROCK Z77 OC Formula Motherboard, Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge, 2 x Velociraptor 10000 RPM HDDs, 1 x Seagate 1TB 5400 RPM HDD, 1 x 160GB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GTX 670 GPU (4GB Version).

Core Issue:

When I first installed Windows my CPU usage was 0 at idle, now its 15%-25% at idle, and I can’t seem to find out why. Some may say around 20% isn't that bad but this is how it started with my previous system and then towards the end i had it at 90%+ and i had NO way to resolve that, so i want to address this problem before it gets out of hand.

CoreTemp manifests the following:

Core 0: 46-49C
Core 1: 49-53C
Core 2: 46-49C
Core 3: 43-46C

Processes:

I have 83 processes running and my memory usage is 2.46GB.

Here are screenshots of my Process view:

I have no viruses detected and either way my PC is hardly 3 days old.

In Conclusion:

I immensely appreciate any help and if necessary am willing to ... Read more

Hello Crew!!! I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!   I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

Hi guys,
When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never seem to add up to the 50% that it says it's being using, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%.
Also when I'm in chrome and I enter an url it seems to take longer than usual and even not going to the address just staying in the blank page.

I got told that I should include screenshots from both task manager and process explorer.

PS: I'm a new user but I'm a bit tech savy and my most fear is that it is the beginning of hard disk failure.

Hello FrekkonYour Kaspersky is running very high. Uninstall and re install it. Have your product key handy. Some errors might occur when removing Kaspersky Lab products via the Start Menu or Control Panel. As a result the application may not remove correctly or remnants of the application may remain in the system. To fully remove the installed Kaspersky Lab product, use the Kavremover utility. Note that the utility deletes all activation data and you will need to activate your product after reinstalling.

Hi there,

I found this forum when my laptop was infected by qvo6, and I've removed that hijacker successfully using the instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-qvo6.com-browser-hijacker), thanks very much to all the volunteers!

Not sure if I'm being more sensitive to my laptop's changes because of the qvo6 incident, but recently I've found that my CPU usage is always high - at least 50% even when I'm not running any programs.

When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never add up to 50%, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%, which hasn't really happened before (I usually can use Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word simultaneously without any problems).

Would someone be able to help me with this? As mentioned, when my laptop was infected with qvo6, I ran iExplore, adwcleaner, malwarebytes and the scans are clear except for a "##### C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XX_clean\prefs.js"

Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

ETA: First time user here, so please let me know if it's not the right forum for this issue.

Hi

I have an issue with my CPU where CPU1 will stay at 60-100 % work rate when idle, and CPU2 is staying at around 20-60%. The rest are staying low at around 0-10% with a few minor spikes here and there.

I have unparked all my cores to try and get the latter ones to take some of the work away from number 1 and 2, but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm wondering what could be causing this. Im gonna give you a picture showing how this doesnt add up from my point of view, and i'll write my specs down.

Fyi my main problem is when i try to run games like Arma 3 (which has pretty horrible single threaded CPU usage as i understand it) and it doesnt have any juice to work with as it's only using my already overworked CPU1 and maybe a bit of CPU2.

Another odd thing to note is that the game runs smooth sometimes, and other times the FPS is so low when i enter the game and throughout the game that it's basically unplayable.

Specs:
- Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @3.40GHz
- 16 GB ram, 1600mhz
- 2x AMD Radeon HD 6900 crossfired
- 800W Cooler Master silent pro gold

First....I see you are using MSI afterburner, turn that off and see what happens. Next...I see you have and AMD 6900 series GPU and you're running the Crimson driver package for it (is that the BETA driver)....not possible as those 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx series GPU have been labeled as Legacy cards and no further support is available and the last known driver for them is the 15.7.1 package. That might be your issue right there.

I'd start off with turning off AfterBurner and then installing the correct GPU driver and then check your results.

Easiest way to ID the culprit is to start the taskmanager and look down the list of services, a lot of open office progs seem to do this and other GNU licensed stuff, seems not to be as good as proclaimed, but taskmanager should soon tell you the culprit.

Hello,
Basically I noticed that my PC has a lot of RAM used but no program is using the RAM - see attached screenshots. Obviously it doesnt really affect me until I launch a game: eg GTA 5 which before ran happily at 60 and is now stuck on less than 1 FPS when I get into the game (even after spending like 20 minutes in lag hell to try to reduce all the settings to the lowest)
However Rainbow Six Siege runs at 120 FPS with no issues, so GTA may be an isolated incident.

A:High RAM usage while idle

You might also want to post a screenshot of your start ups.

Cortana seems to be using a lot of memory for just being idle. If this is not being used, perhaps you might want to disable that. Your CPU also seems high for just being idle. I don't know if this 'jumped' while you took the screen image, but to me it appears that in these three images, your CPU load ranged between 15 - 36%, which seems high for your processor during basically idle time. You might want to boot into SafeMode and see what things look like. See HERE.

I would think you should see a noticeable drop in resource usage while in SafeMode. If that is the case, then it might be some software conflict.

You might have to disable one start up at a time, then test your system. If no change, go back and enable it, then disable the next one in line.

You might also be experiencing some memory leak some place, that might be the cause. However, you would have to identify which program or application. If you recently installed something just before the problem began, that might be a place to begin.

There is something that might help, at least until you get this sorted out. There's a free program called CleanMem.

I have used it for years, and I do have it on my Win-10 machine as well, although it does not indicate that it's compatible with win-10 (yet).

It will force the release of unused memory every 'X' amount of time. It's defaulted to every 15 minutes, but I have mine set for every five minutes. When... Read more

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my PC - I've searched high and low but can't find a solution - any help would be really appreciated.

When it's idle I noticed that my CPU usage was hovering around the 20% mark (I only noticed as I could hear my CPU fan speed up). As soon as I move the mouse to turn the (blank screen) screensaver off, the CPU goes back to 0% usage.

I'm trying to track down the offending process using Process Monitor (in particular the Event Profiling option). The process that is affecting my CPU is svchost.exe - which I know is the host for a number of services. I checked the PID and using Task Manager, checked what processes this particular one was hosting:

UxSms
UmRdpService
TrkWks
SysMain
PcaSvc
Netman
IPBusEnum
hidserv
AudioEndpointBuilder

I also filtered my Process Monitor log to see events that were logged to that svchost.exe. What I found was an entry for every single directory on my C and D drives - see the following extract:

Don't know what the logged events mean, but I think you may have a scheduled task that is set up to run when the computer is idle. If you can find that task you may be able to solve it. I don't know a way to find tasks that run when idle except to open every task and check its conditions and that's too difficult. But if you open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and run this you'll get a list of all running tasks:

schtasks /query | find "Running"

But chances are that when you run it after the computer is in idle, the task will stop. Put the code below in a text file and save it as .bat When you run it it will list all running tasks every 30 seconds, and it will include a time stamp too.

Code:
@ECHO OFF
:LOOP
TIME /T
schtasks /query | find "Running"
TIMEOUT /T 30
GOTO LOOP
And try Process Explorer, also from Sysinternals, instead of Task Manager. It's much better!

First thing I did was roll back my nvidia drivers to the previous version, but then I noticed my cpu usage. I seem to be using 35-45% cpu usage at idle. I've never seen it go below 35% (In safe mode its around 2-3%).

Things i've tried:
- Sfc scannow at boot (it found & fixed a few things)
- chkdsk /f at boot
- Stuff from here: Windows 10 High CPU Usage Fixes
- Superantispyware scan

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction!
Thanks!

I must have opened something online or downloaded something I shouldn't have because these two issues are brand new and they're pissing me off! I could use some help. About to go to bed because I've spent too much time tonight trying to figure it out and coming up with nothing.

Anyone have any idea about either of my fun new issues?

I've been trying to solve this issue for the past week with little to no success. My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1400, with Windows XP SP2 installed on it, with Windows 98 as the Base OS. I've tried reinstalling XP, thinking it was an issue with my install of XP. CPU Usage will read as 30% to as high as 90% with nothing but the desktop and key systems running. When I look at my proccesses though, the System Idle Process reads as 96 to 80%, which should make the CPU Usage 4-20%. This issue has been going on since the Windows Update last week. If anyone else has been havng this proble\m, or has a fi for it, PLEASE let me know, so I can stop slamming my head into a brick wall over this...Just in case, I did a HiJackThis scan. Hello, your log was movedfrom the XP to this forum because of safety considerations. HijackThis logs may only be posted in this forum and due to time constraints, we can only tell you whether or not your log appears free of infection or not--other troubleshooting can be done without a HijackThis log.Your log looks clean. It doesn't look like a malware issue, rather a possible problem with a Windows update and possibly exacerbated by the system being an upgrade from 98 and old. I suggest you repost your questions in the XP forum and this time don't post the HijackThis log. However, it would be a good idea to post a link to this log as some might find the HJT information useful. This topic is now closed.

Hello, I realize this is a general kind of problem lacking the easy to resolve details, but here is a problem that cropped up yesterday on my computer.

My CPU usage when no applications beyond the startup ones are running is 56%. This seems really high to me as I'd expect it to be pretty low when I am not actively doing anything on the system. Also, periodically I get lag spikes where my whole computer will slow to a crawl and I will be almost completely unable to do anything during this minute or so.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. So far I ran my Trend Micro Antivirus scan and a Spybot Search and Destroy scan with nothing that needed to be removed on either. To my memory I have not installed any new applications lately that might cause this. Any thoughts on what might be going on or what I should do to determine further details on the problem?

I realize this is a fuzzy post, but I'm hoping you guys can get me going in the direction I need to so you can figure out what is wrong. Thanks!

I noticed that after I wake up my laptop from sleep/hybernation (closing and opening the laptop) task manager shows that "system" is taking up ~20% CPU usage. Process explorer show that ntoskml.exe is to blame for the high CPU usage. Is the problem a faulty driver like the internet seems to suggest or something else? How can I fix this?

Hey guys, just installed a new Samsung 850 EVO SSD Dual Booting with Linux. Used what I believe is called a Retail Version of Windows 7 to avoid all the junk that was included with the Toshiba Disks. Seems recently Windows 7 is running at 50+% CPU and 30+% at Idle right after boot, is this normal for an SSD? And, I left it like this for like an hour just to see if it would calm down.

Right now running 82% CPU and 51% Memory with only Three Tabs open and nothing else...using Chrome. One my Yahoo Mail, Youtube music, This site and my Bookmarks Tab. I've looked around at what is running but nothing seems abnormal, any suggestions?

A:High CPU and Memory Usage at Idle

Hi,
This is windows updates time
Micro... has been playing cat and mouse on these download links so if they do not exist yet you might have to use the catalog to get them if the links don't work,
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

Make sure KB3020369 is installed
Win-7 32 bit
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=46827
Win-7 64 bit
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=46817

Then manually install KB3172605
Win-7 32 bit,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=53335
Win-7 64 bit,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=53332

After switch your windows update settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

You must use Internet explorer to download from the catalog
Microsoft Update Catalog
You also have to right click ie and use run as administrator don't ask me why but the 2 recommended browser add-ons won't install unless you do,

A:High memory Usage @ Idle

I don't see this usage as either unusual or abnormal.

Memory usage is always under the control of the system memory manager, the primary goal being to maximize overall system performance. It usually works very well. The system will always try to find some use for as much memory as possible, even if it is only of trivial use. Within reasonable limits the more memory you have, the more it will use. This memory usage is of course higher than necessary, and that is a good thing. The memory manager is using the large amount of memory available to improve performance. But if a large application needs more memory this usage will automatically be trimmed back, drastically if necessary. With 12 GB RAM that isn't likely to happen very often.

Don't be concerned over the low value for "Free" memory that may occasionally show. This number is of little importance and is often misunderstood. The value of importance is "Available" and that is very high. And that is good.

Don't be concerned that adding up the memory usage in the process list doesn't add up to total usage. It was never intended that it would. The default configuration doesn't show all process usage and there are major users of memory that are not processes, not all of which are shown in Task Manager.

Hello,

I know it sounds a little bit strange, but:

When I open Task manager ->show process from all users, I notice that System Idle is uses about 95% of CPU.
But the overall cpu usage is lower than 20-30%. How is that possible? (windows 7)

Also, I have 2 os installed on the same computer. 7 and XP.
Windows XP 50%CPU load.-> Disable automatic updates=> Low CPU usage.
If I disable auto updating feature in Windows 7 too, and update it "on demand" weekly would that solve the issue?

Thank you in advance.

A:High System Idle CPU, but overall, low cpu usage

the easiest way to remove any resource hogs is to:
click start;
type run;
in run type msconfig;
hit enter;
click the startup tab;
untick everything non essential;
personally I untick everything (youd want to keep your virus scanner though)

What are your computer specifications? (RAM, CPU etc.) Is your computer slowing down when you use it? Go to the Task Manager-Processes, what tasks have the highest usage? Also what programs are you running?
