Preferred Solution: cleaning a computer case

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer keeps shutting down when playing games or converting movies. I changed RAM (then putting old modules back because they weren't causing the problem), bought a new PSU and installed 2 aditional fans. It didn't work. So, my "diagnosis" is that dust is causing the problem. I need some advice about cleaning the case, removing the CPU heatsink and stuff like that.

Dust can build up on the CPU fan and prevent proper cooling. This can be cleaned without removing the heat sink by using those cans of portable air blast. Take the case outside and being careful to not loosen any of the internal connections. blast the inside of the case and especially around the cpu with the air and that should help. Carpets/cats/dogs/people create dust and it tends to build up on the fins for the cpu cooler and prevent proper cooling.

Give this a shot and see if this helps.

Rich

PS: I do not recommend removing the heat sink as you will need heatsink grease when you reseat it. Also you take the chance of unplugging the cpu and they are dog to replace properly without bending pins which will ruin your whole day.

What things are safe and good for cleaning the exterior of a computer case? Are things like baby wipes and Swiffer dusters safe? (This is what I usually use and it seems to have done no damage so far on my new and old computer) Any cautions to be aware of when cleaning the outside of the case?

A:Things safe for cleaning outside of computer case

A mild dishwasher soap and water solution like you'd use to clean most anything. It's not going to hurt paint over metal.

The obvious precaution is to not let any of the solution get inside and stay away from connection points, switches, or any moving parts.

Real men do no more than wipe with a slightly damp cloth, if anything at all---unless they've done something unspeakable to the case.

I opened the case and there was a lot of dust on al the parts and between fans and bottom of case. I want to clean them, is it ok to use a vacuum cleaner? (because of metal parts of the vacuum cleaner). How do you clean the fans?

A:cleaning the case

Hi and welcome. You can use canned air, or an air compressor (I just used an air compressor last weekend to blow mine out). I took both sides off, took it outside, and blew as much as I could get out.

The fans may need to be removed, especially the cpu fan, and cleaning by hand, depending on how gunked up it is. Of course, if you do this, you'll have to replace the thermal paste ontop of the cpu as well.

I wouldn't try to get a vacuum cleaner in there

Okay, so I have another thread going about a whole other issue here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=67987

But along the way a new, I supose more critical, issue arose. I cleaned out my case of dust, re-seated the RAM and applied some fresh heatsink compound (as recommended in the other thread), and now it can't seem to boot into windows in any mode. It gets to "WINDOWS/System32/mup.sys" and it stops. I left it there for a few hours without any progress, so I just shut it down and let it be. I can't figure out what the problem could be. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I don't know if it's unrelated to the other problem, or if they're some how linked.

Yesterday I was cleaning my case out and I took my graphics card off the motherboard carefully and put it in a safe spot. When I put it back in, whenever I start up my computer and login, my screen goes black and my display says no VGA connected.

I can successfully start up in safe mode.

Now, here's what I've done numerous times:
- Boot in safe
- Uninstall drivers
- Reinstall drivers
- Restart

I've done the following with an older version of the NVIDIA driver.

I've also tried booting in Low resolution mode -- still nothing, and I've tried setting to the lowest res in safe mode. I've also checked to make sure in BIOS it's set for the graphics card and not onboard or anything.

Note: I have a ZOTAC 560ti 448.

Hello,

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

what may cause this issue ?

could be overheating CPU. Did you apply fresh Thermal paste to the HSF after reinstalling the motherboard? Is it tight and secure? Did you blow out all the dirt, dust and debris from the fans' fins?

Hello all. This is my first post to this forum. I was drawn here in a quest to rid my computer of those infernal pop-ups. I have used Search and Destroy before coming to this forum and it helped with my initial pop-up problems..but I somehow got "infected" again and "Search and Destroy" couldn't help me. I came to this forum and after reading some of the posts..I downloaded "Hi-Jack This" and "Ad-Aware". Both of these programs are "WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!" After running Hi-Jack and then AD-Aware...my pop-up problems disappeared. I still have a few questions concerning the file created by "HI-Jack This". I can pretty much determine what files I don't want any longer..but want some "Expert" advice before removing them with "HI Jack".

I'm curious about the R3 entry "URLSearchHook"..aside from that..is there anything that looks pernicious?

Hi All,

I hope this is the right forum

I am getting our old computer ready for my daughter. She will be using it for games and music. She will not have internet access on it. We stopped using it almost 2 years ago. At the time the preformance had really gone down hill. Rather than clean it up we used that as an excuse to buy a new system. Now I want to get it running as best as possible.

It is a Compaq Presario 5000 series with windows XP service pack 2. It is 6 years old.

So far I have: cleaned the inside of the case. Deleted unwanted files and programs. Ran disk clean up and disk defragmenmter. Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The first time it found a bunch of stuff which it removed. The second time the log shows no infections. I did the same thing in safe mode with SUPRERAntiSpysweeper. It found and fixed a bunch the first time and now is clean. I ran Avast which found four things which I moved to quarantine. The second time it came up clean. I ran ATC cleaner and finally I cleared all of the old restore points. Did I miss anything?

Since this computer won't have internet access I plan to uninstall the Mbam, SaS, and Avast. I turned off the firewall and auto updates. This is an older computer and I don't want to waste any resources on unnecessary things. Is this OK to do? One problem is everytime the computer starts I get an alert that I'm not protected. Can this alert be turned off?

Two more things pop up when the computer starts. One is RUNDLL (error lo... Read more

If you want to completely clean up the computer I suggest you just reinstall Windows if you still have the install disk (Always keep the install disk!) I have done this a few time to my old computers and they work suprisingly fast after they have been reinstalled. If you don't know how to install Windows you can always google it and you should find plenty of tutorials. But after you reinstall windows XP, you might wanna get service pack 3 for it. But in order to get service pack three, you need to get service pack 1. So you can go to the microsoft website and download service packs or go to a third-party site that doesn't require that you get all these security updates. Well, once you have SP3 installed you might wanna get Windows Media Player 11 because your daughter is using it for music. You can get this from Microsoft. And there are another bunch of things you will need for games and such, like directx9 and other software. Once you have the computer the way you like it, you can disconnect from the internet and set it up for your daughter's use. And usually you wont get viruses if you don't have internet access. But sometimes there are viruses on flash drives and stuff. If you have any questions please feel free to ask

Please list:
1) the filenames that come up with Norton and XSoftSpy scans that cannot be deleted, and
2) copy and paste your HiJackThis log

P.S. If after some reasonable amount of time, and you get no response, issue a new bump message to your thread, i.e. post the single word "bump" in a new post reply to your thread to put it at the start of the forum.

Now that I'm finished with my grandmother's computer, I'm at a friends house working on his. His computer is BADLY infested with spyware and it shows. He has paid for SpySweeper and we are currently trying to find out if there is a way to get the software back after reformatting... but thats not my question. I plan to reformat his computer and post a HJT log to try to help him out. My question is, which should I do first? Reformat and then post an HJT log here or post an HJT log, work on the registry, then reformat?

Thanks for reading...

Many unnecessary programs, toolbars and Add-ons come bundled with other software and can be removed via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 so check there first. These are the links you asked for.Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareWinPatrol (32-bit, 64-bit)What anti-virus solution are you going to use? Hello, I'm new to BleepingComputer... need help.. have looked all over... I have multiple malware in my system and need to know how to get rid of everything... Some of this stuff has hidden my files from my internal and external hard drives.. still can't seem to make one of the external hard drives show all the files.. I have read on other posts that one of the malware called backdoor.cycbot is very critical and more than likely I would have to restore and reinstall my OS (I's running Windows 7 Enterprise)... if this is the case I am willing to do it however, I do not have the disk for it.. moved from SD to SF back to SD and it got lost somewhere in the move.. Anyway, I appreciate the time and hope someone can help me figure this out... I need it for photo editing. Thanks again. Nothing much to fix here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH. EXE

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the resul... Read more

A:Something Odd After Cleaning My Computer

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.
I don't find any indication of malware in your log. Have you cleaned out your temp files and emptied your recycle bin? If you haven't done that in a while you'll be amazed at how much junk your computer accumulates that you don't need.

This is all stuff from the Add/Remove Programs list, and I want as much junk off my computer as I can get.

Adobe Atmosphere Player for Acrobat and Adobe Reader
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX

Apple Software Update
Broadcom Management Programs
Broadjump Client Foundations (I have attempted to uninstall this, but It ended up uninstalling my Internet Call Waiting, which I need)

Dell Digital Jukebox Driver
Dell Driver Reset Tool (What the heck is this?)
Modem Event Monitor
Modem Helper
Modem on Hold
My Way Search Assistant (I can't get this off. I try, and it says there was an error. I may have to reinstall it, but I don't trust it.)

There are two Quicktimes listed. One is 76.9 MB, while the other is 1.15. What is the difference? Also, one looks like it is being unpacked from a box in the Icon.

Thanks for your time and patience.

A:I need some help cleaning my computer.

hi. can u tell me which quicktime is the one with the icon that u explained plz. also my way search assistant is spyware and adware (HERE) so try this program it may remove the spyware files on your computer. May i note that when a program shows an error during uninstallation, the uninstall package is either corrupt or one of the uninstall files is missing. I suggest u install spyware blaster first then reinstall my way search assistant to fix the corrupt uninstall package. then uninstall the program using it's uninstall. Dell driver reset tool restores all drivers to the last working state. i recomend leaving this installed. the broad jump thing u should first kill the CDF.exe process in windows task manager then uninstall.more information HERE. After u've uninstalled all the crap, u could try to check for junk files using CCLEANER. hope this helps and isn't too much info!!!

The whole reason y i want someone to take a look at my hjt log is do to a game that im playign and its performance. im thinkign that maybe theres a viruse on my comp or somethign thats causign some slow proccessing...the game in question is World Of Warcraft. My latency sometimes goes up to 2000ms + where the normal range would be 80ms-150ms. My connectiion is thru Dsl phone line and im on a router with 2 other computers. i do have several ports fowarded (6998-6999, i think) but im not really noticing anything with them fowarded or not.

so thats why im thinking it could be a viruse causing the lag...

My daughter has a computer she uses (upstairs, we share the IP connection) and this morning I decided to go over it, starting with the cleaning up unneeded files in dos (Rollin' Rog told me how to do on mine, elsewhere in this topic)

After that I updated and ran several scans. I had put AVG in this computer for her, last Fall, but it was (now) gone. No links, not in program files, etc. She doesn't know how to remove things and said she didn't do anything that she knew of.

At some point a search address bar called DASH BAR had appeared up top of the screen. On checking the website link with it, it says it's from GAIN. Seems like I read somewhere that's the name GATOR is using now?

I downloaded AVG again, updated adaware and spybot...

AVG found a virus, Trojan horse download stubby A (?) in C\WINDOWS\BELT.EXE Said it was able to take care of it.

In Adaware there were 51 enteries to take out. Mainly GATOR, XUPITER (she had that one other time, and I think there is something special needed to remove it? Besides the scans?)

Several said possible attempt at browser take over.

Spybot found more GATOR after that (and not in adaware files)

I put GATOR in "find" and it came up with of them, 2 said they were zip files (she didn't have winzip on the computer so couldn't have opened them anyway) It mentioned (in the info) Spybot, so I think it might be something related to that, and okay to leave them? I was going to delete them in the ... Read more

i'm cleaning my computer and i was wondering...

are there any crucial programs in the 'add or remove programs' window that will mess up my comp if i remove them, or can i just delete all of my programs that i dont want?

if there are programs that are crucial, what are they??

A:I'm cleaning my computer!

That's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question.

I'm guessing you're talking about programmes that came pre-installed with the PC?

If so then we need more info - make & model, programme list etc.

I've been tasked with cleaning up a computer that ran for several months without an Antivirus and without XP Service Pack 2. I have installed an antivirus and updated the OS to plug up some holes. I removed quite a number of viruses and spyware however there is something still on the system that I cannot seem to find and was hoping one of you who knows a bit more about this area could help.

Well there's not much of anything showing on your log. This may not be a malware issue.

Go here for an online AV scan:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Scan "Local Disks" and when finished save the scan log and post that log here, okay?

Hey everybody,

There are lots of small things that happen when running the comp. that shouldnt. From weird random changes to files - hang ups - windows desktop totally tweaking out - IE doesnt work anymore.

But its clean of bugs and viruses.

So I was hoping there is a way to totally reset Vista with out reinstalling it? At least to the point where all of the Users would be erased and all the factory sets would be like it would, as if you had just installed it.

I dont have a Vista CD, it didnt come with one!

Any advice?
