Preferred Solution: cleaning a computer case

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer keeps shutting down when playing games or converting movies. I changed RAM (then putting old modules back because they weren't causing the problem), bought a new PSU and installed 2 aditional fans. It didn't work. So, my "diagnosis" is that dust is causing the problem. I need some advice about cleaning the case, removing the CPU heatsink and stuff like that.

Dust can build up on the CPU fan and prevent proper cooling. This can be cleaned without removing the heat sink by using those cans of portable air blast. Take the case outside and being careful to not loosen any of the internal connections. blast the inside of the case and especially around the cpu with the air and that should help. Carpets/cats/dogs/people create dust and it tends to build up on the fins for the cpu cooler and prevent proper cooling.

Give this a shot and see if this helps.

Rich

PS: I do not recommend removing the heat sink as you will need heatsink grease when you reseat it. Also you take the chance of unplugging the cpu and they are dog to replace properly without bending pins which will ruin your whole day.

What things are safe and good for cleaning the exterior of a computer case? Are things like baby wipes and Swiffer dusters safe? (This is what I usually use and it seems to have done no damage so far on my new and old computer) Any cautions to be aware of when cleaning the outside of the case?

A:Things safe for cleaning outside of computer case

A mild dishwasher soap and water solution like you'd use to clean most anything. It's not going to hurt paint over metal.

The obvious precaution is to not let any of the solution get inside and stay away from connection points, switches, or any moving parts.

Real men do no more than wipe with a slightly damp cloth, if anything at all---unless they've done something unspeakable to the case.

I opened the case and there was a lot of dust on al the parts and between fans and bottom of case. I want to clean them, is it ok to use a vacuum cleaner? (because of metal parts of the vacuum cleaner). How do you clean the fans?

A:cleaning the case

Hi and welcome. You can use canned air, or an air compressor (I just used an air compressor last weekend to blow mine out). I took both sides off, took it outside, and blew as much as I could get out.

The fans may need to be removed, especially the cpu fan, and cleaning by hand, depending on how gunked up it is. Of course, if you do this, you'll have to replace the thermal paste ontop of the cpu as well.

I wouldn't try to get a vacuum cleaner in there

Okay, so I have another thread going about a whole other issue here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=67987

But along the way a new, I supose more critical, issue arose. I cleaned out my case of dust, re-seated the RAM and applied some fresh heatsink compound (as recommended in the other thread), and now it can't seem to boot into windows in any mode. It gets to "WINDOWS/System32/mup.sys" and it stops. I left it there for a few hours without any progress, so I just shut it down and let it be. I can't figure out what the problem could be. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I don't know if it's unrelated to the other problem, or if they're some how linked.

Yesterday I was cleaning my case out and I took my graphics card off the motherboard carefully and put it in a safe spot. When I put it back in, whenever I start up my computer and login, my screen goes black and my display says no VGA connected.

I can successfully start up in safe mode.

Now, here's what I've done numerous times:
- Boot in safe
- Uninstall drivers
- Reinstall drivers
- Restart

I've done the following with an older version of the NVIDIA driver.

I've also tried booting in Low resolution mode -- still nothing, and I've tried setting to the lowest res in safe mode. I've also checked to make sure in BIOS it's set for the graphics card and not onboard or anything.

Note: I have a ZOTAC 560ti 448.

Hello,

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

but when i press the switch button it works normally , and the screen display normally and there are no beeps , but after like 20 second my computer turns off automatically ! ,

what may cause this issue ?

A:i replaced all of my computer components from my broken case to other case

could be overheating CPU. Did you apply fresh Thermal paste to the HSF after reinstalling the motherboard? Is it tight and secure? Did you blow out all the dirt, dust and debris from the fans' fins?

This is all stuff from the Add/Remove Programs list, and I want as much junk off my computer as I can get.

Adobe Atmosphere Player for Acrobat and Adobe Reader
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX

Apple Software Update
Broadcom Management Programs
Broadjump Client Foundations (I have attempted to uninstall this, but It ended up uninstalling my Internet Call Waiting, which I need)

Dell Digital Jukebox Driver
Dell Driver Reset Tool (What the heck is this?)
Modem Event Monitor
Modem Helper
Modem on Hold
My Way Search Assistant (I can't get this off. I try, and it says there was an error. I may have to reinstall it, but I don't trust it.)

There are two Quicktimes listed. One is 76.9 MB, while the other is 1.15. What is the difference? Also, one looks like it is being unpacked from a box in the Icon.

Thanks for your time and patience.

A:I need some help cleaning my computer.

hi. can u tell me which quicktime is the one with the icon that u explained plz. also my way search assistant is spyware and adware (HERE) so try this program it may remove the spyware files on your computer. May i note that when a program shows an error during uninstallation, the uninstall package is either corrupt or one of the uninstall files is missing. I suggest u install spyware blaster first then reinstall my way search assistant to fix the corrupt uninstall package. then uninstall the program using it's uninstall. Dell driver reset tool restores all drivers to the last working state. i recomend leaving this installed. the broad jump thing u should first kill the CDF.exe process in windows task manager then uninstall.more information HERE. After u've uninstalled all the crap, u could try to check for junk files using CCLEANER. hope this helps and isn't too much info!!!

Nothing much to fix here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH. EXE

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). So I had to replace my computer with a used computer coming from my relative. I've tried manually uninstalling each program and software that I know I don't need, but there are plenty that I have no idea about. I've already backed up all the important files that he needs/wants. I just need to know which files to keep and what to get rid of.

I've tried formatting the hard drive, but I guess it's no longer an option because I don't have a disc to reinstall windows.

I own a Windows 7 Home Premium, acer.
If you guys need any more information, I'd be happy to post them.
I'll also run a scan now to check for viruses.

Also, when I ran a scan in HiJack it said:

"Your system denied write access to Hosts File. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may NOT be able to fix this."

I don't understand that, but when I try to open the logfile it says that it cannot find the file. What do I do?

HI I realise this problem has probably been discussed but I haven't the time to check. My computer keeps dieing a slow death.
It started crashing Thursday night. Friday morning I started to try to save it. No hope. Friday afternoon I reinstalled XP as a repair and then spent All day yesterday trying to scan everything as suggested by flyanglersonline. I still can't get adaware to finish and a couple of other programs wouldn't work for me either. This morning I reinstalled XP as new. Now I am here and begging for help.

The main problem I think is a pop-up directing me to registeryrepair and there are others too.
Adaware has an unhandled exception as described here. This is the message it wants me to send as an error report which won't go through. What can I do next please?

A:Help With Cleaning My Computer

DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 2 ON AN INFECTED COMPUTERhttp://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.htmlThe Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XP SP2) fixes a range of bugs in Windows XP. The file is a large download and can be applied to any version of Windows XP Home, Professional, TabletPC or Media Center. It doesn't matter what XP updates you have previously applied to your system, SP2 will update any unpatched, partially patched or completely updated system (it includes all previously released patches and updates). If you are going to reinstall the original release of Windows XP on a PC, it is important that you apply this Service Pack BEFORE connecting to the Web. Nasty viruses and worms like Sasser and Blaster can enter an unpatched system as soon as it is connected to the Web. They come through an open port on your system. You don't even have to receive email or go to a web site - just being connected is enough. XP SP2 fixes the security holes so you won't get attacked. The advantage of this full download is that it can be used on any system - plus it doesn't require an Internet connection to install. You can download SP2, burn it to CD and use it on multiple PCs.

The whole reason y i want someone to take a look at my hjt log is do to a game that im playign and its performance. im thinkign that maybe theres a viruse on my comp or somethign thats causign some slow proccessing...the game in question is World Of Warcraft. My latency sometimes goes up to 2000ms + where the normal range would be 80ms-150ms. My connectiion is thru Dsl phone line and im on a router with 2 other computers. i do have several ports fowarded (6998-6999, i think) but im not really noticing anything with them fowarded or not.

so thats why im thinking it could be a viruse causing the lag...

Hi all,

I have had my computer since August of 2005 and although I have done somewhat regular maintenance, I am looking to do a good clean-up/checkup. I generally perform tasks such as uninstalling unnecessary programs, clearing temporary internet files and defragging my disk. Other than that, I don't do much unless the computer is acting strange. So I just recently installed Hijack This and I found some virus-type files that needed fixing. I am unsure of some of the stuff that Hijack This comes up with so I wanted to get some help from the more knowledgeable. I'm also open to any other tips as far as maintaining a computer! Also not sure if I am posting this Hijack This file in the proper manner.

Hey everybody,

There are lots of small things that happen when running the comp. that shouldnt. From weird random changes to files - hang ups - windows desktop totally tweaking out - IE doesnt work anymore.

But its clean of bugs and viruses.

So I was hoping there is a way to totally reset Vista with out reinstalling it? At least to the point where all of the Users would be erased and all the factory sets would be like it would, as if you had just installed it.

I dont have a Vista CD, it didnt come with one!

Any advice?

Well there's not much of anything showing on your log. This may not be a malware issue.

Go here for an online AV scan:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Scan "Local Disks" and when finished save the scan log and post that log here, okay?

I am not a big fan of registry cleaners; unless you are very careful about what you are doing and deleting, and have some understanding of Windows, you can do your computer more harm than good. There are other more immediate, and safer, things you can do with greater results:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44690/slow-computer/Regards,John

Hello. I'm having issues with my emachines T6412. It seems to have really gotten slow. I have seen the speed decrease over a long time. I use system tools all the time and defrag often, etc. but it just doesn't seem to make much difference. I thought about registry cleaners but have read your forums and realize that is a mistake. I have uninstalled programs I don't use or want any longer. I have norton antivirus updated with a 2010 release trial period currently. Everything else is pretty much what was on the computer from new. I do keep up to date with secunia and no problems updating when it becomes nescessary. Overall, the computer works fine, just slowly. I have dsl service which also has had issues with speed. But, it's not just slow working online, it's slow in all aspects. Is there something else I should be doing to keep it running better? I can't afford a new system right now, so even though it drags along, I will still continue to use it. If I had to guess, I would say its about 1/3 as fast as it was new. Maybe less.
If anyone could give me some ideas I would be more than happy to try them. I realize it may just be age and leftover items from years of service. But, I would appreciate any suggestions that may change this.
Thank you very much. Linda

Hello all. This is my first post to this forum. I was drawn here in a quest to rid my computer of those infernal pop-ups. I have used Search and Destroy before coming to this forum and it helped with my initial pop-up problems..but I somehow got "infected" again and "Search and Destroy" couldn't help me. I came to this forum and after reading some of the posts..I downloaded "Hi-Jack This" and "Ad-Aware". Both of these programs are "WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!" After running Hi-Jack and then AD-Aware...my pop-up problems disappeared. I still have a few questions concerning the file created by "HI-Jack This". I can pretty much determine what files I don't want any longer..but want some "Expert" advice before removing them with "HI Jack".

I'm curious about the R3 entry "URLSearchHook"..aside from that..is there anything that looks pernicious?

Hello,
I heard about this website and the virus removal potential that it has.
I came here to ask for help with cleaning my computer of any viruses and malware that it might still have.
I want to fully clean it.

Id like to thank you in advance!

I also ran the DDS program, and I got an error saying that it was not meant to run in 'Compatibility mode'. Can I have help with this as well?

Thank you!

Hi there,is this just a prophylactic check up or do you experience any problems or symptoms (which ones) that make you think you're infected? Please run a FRST scan:Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.(If you are not sure which version (32-/64-bit) applies to your system, download and try to start both of them as just the right one will run.)Start FRST with administator privileges.Make sure the option Addition.txt is checked and press the Scan button. When finished, FRST will produce two logs (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) in the same directory the tool was run from. Please copy and paste these logs in your next reply.

This is a laptop used by a local non-profit organization. The only software that really needs to be on it is QuickBooks and Microsoft Office. It is painfully slow and seems to freeze up often so I tried to uninstall some of the software that I thought was useless (Bing, Google Desktop and Google bar) and the computer wouldn't boot up so I had to go through the repair process to recover. Now I'm afraid to do anything because of that and I don't want to destroy any of the data on the computer.

The previous user said it had never been connected to the internet so there have been no updates since 2008. It has McAfee Security Center installed but it is out of date and the license has expired. There just seems to be a lot of unless software on this computer but this may have been part of the original configuration.

Computer is a Toshiba, Model Satellite A200, Windows Vista Ultimate, 32-bit, 1014 MB Ram, Dual CPU 1.75 GHz.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would just clone the hard drive...saves all data files...then do a clean install and reinstall the two programs you describe as essential.

"Cleaning up" a system that has not been properly cared for...over an extended period of time...is unlikely to prove fruitful.

FWIW: 1GB of RAM might be a tad too little...Office is a system hog...I would not be surprised if the system is infected (the Internet only happens to be the easiest way to develop infection problems on a system, it's not the only way. I don't know if I would believe someone with Bing on the system...if he/she told me that the system had never been connected to the Internet .

My computer was running slow, so I took all the cookies out, and tried to run Scandisk, before defragging, but Scandisk reported that it had restarted 10 times, because Windows or some other programme had been writing to my C drive, I rebooted and tried again, again I got the same report.
What is happening, what is it trying to tell me?

I have had a number of instances of viruses or something like that. I have been getting a lot of instances where my browser keeps sending me to something calling itself a "Premium Content" window and trys to ask me to take a survey. Also, at one point I could not get on the internet. My husband had me run Malwarebytes from a thumb drive and it seemed to at least allow me back on the internet, but I still have that same problem where my browser keeps redirecting me. My husband says he can't help me anymore and I need to follow your instructions. So please help me.
