cleaning a computer case

Q: cleaning a computer case

I have a Antec 300 u 3 case which needs cleaning inside and vents on side and front of the case.

Due to my disability I can not pick the case up and clean it.

Is there another way which I can clean the case with out opening it please

Preferred Solution: cleaning a computer case

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer keeps shutting down when playing games or converting movies. I changed RAM (then putting old modules back because they weren't causing the problem), bought a new PSU and installed 2 aditional fans. It didn't work. So, my "diagnosis" is that dust is causing the problem. I need some advice about cleaning the case, removing the CPU heatsink and stuff like that.

Dust can build up on the CPU fan and prevent proper cooling. This can be cleaned without removing the heat sink by using those cans of portable air blast. Take the case outside and being careful to not loosen any of the internal connections. blast the inside of the case and especially around the cpu with the air and that should help. Carpets/cats/dogs/people create dust and it tends to build up on the fins for the cpu cooler and prevent proper cooling.

Give this a shot and see if this helps.

PS: I do not recommend removing the heat sink as you will need heatsink grease when you reseat it. Also you take the chance of unplugging the cpu and they are dog to replace properly without bending pins which will ruin your whole day.

What things are safe and good for cleaning the exterior of a computer case? Are things like baby wipes and Swiffer dusters safe? (This is what I usually use and it seems to have done no damage so far on my new and old computer) Any cautions to be aware of when cleaning the outside of the case?

A:Things safe for cleaning outside of computer case

A mild dishwasher soap and water solution like you'd use to clean most anything. It's not going to hurt paint over metal.

The obvious precaution is to not let any of the solution get inside and stay away from connection points, switches, or any moving parts.

Real men do no more than wipe with a slightly damp cloth, if anything at all---unless they've done something unspeakable to the case.

I opened the case and there was a lot of dust on al the parts and between fans and bottom of case. I want to clean them, is it ok to use a vacuum cleaner? (because of metal parts of the vacuum cleaner). How do you clean the fans?

A:cleaning the case

Hi and welcome. You can use canned air, or an air compressor (I just used an air compressor last weekend to blow mine out). I took both sides off, took it outside, and blew as much as I could get out.

The fans may need to be removed, especially the cpu fan, and cleaning by hand, depending on how gunked up it is. Of course, if you do this, you'll have to replace the thermal paste ontop of the cpu as well.

I wouldn't try to get a vacuum cleaner in there

Okay, so I have another thread going about a whole other issue here:

But along the way a new, I supose more critical, issue arose. I cleaned out my case of dust, re-seated the RAM and applied some fresh heatsink compound (as recommended in the other thread), and now it can't seem to boot into windows in any mode. It gets to "WINDOWS/System32/mup.sys" and it stops. I left it there for a few hours without any progress, so I just shut it down and let it be. I can't figure out what the problem could be. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I don't know if it's unrelated to the other problem, or if they're some how linked.

Yesterday I was cleaning my case out and I took my graphics card off the motherboard carefully and put it in a safe spot. When I put it back in, whenever I start up my computer and login, my screen goes black and my display says no VGA connected.

I can successfully start up in safe mode.

Now, here's what I've done numerous times:
- Boot in safe
- Uninstall drivers
- Reinstall drivers
- Restart

I've done the following with an older version of the NVIDIA driver.

I've also tried booting in Low resolution mode -- still nothing, and I've tried setting to the lowest res in safe mode. I've also checked to make sure in BIOS it's set for the graphics card and not onboard or anything.

Note: I have a ZOTAC 560ti 448.

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

what may cause this issue ?

Trying to fix my brother's old laptop that has some sort of virus infection. After starting the computer and logging in, the desktop background changes, a pop-up keeps appearing in the bottom right, a pop-up saying there is a virus comes up eventually, and when I tryed opening some programs (including that DDS program I was supposed to run and post a log for) I get a message saying it is infected. Take a look at the pictures to see the errors and such. I'll just attach the GMER .txt file since THAT at least worked.

I looked up the trojan in the error message "TrojanSPM/LX" on google and found this page and tried running SmitFraudFix to get rid of it, can't boot into safe mode (always blue screen error in safe mode, also occasional blue screen when logging in normally, sometimes it won't finish loading desktop) so tried with normal boot, I get the "file is infected" error. Not really sure what else to try, so I thought I would ask you experts :)

Please do the following:

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to combafix.exe before saving it.
Save it to your desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:Tools->Options->Main tab
Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

Link 1
Link 2

-----------------------------------------------------------Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

Before any work can be done on this machine, there are several things that requires your intervention.

This machine is messed up pretty badly because you have several anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!!

Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & produces undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstallWhen you have completed the above, please re-post a fresh HJT log

2) copy and paste your HiJackThis log

This is all stuff from the Add/Remove Programs list, and I want as much junk off my computer as I can get.

Adobe Atmosphere Player for Acrobat and Adobe Reader
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX

Apple Software Update
Broadcom Management Programs
Broadjump Client Foundations (I have attempted to uninstall this, but It ended up uninstalling my Internet Call Waiting, which I need)

Dell Digital Jukebox Driver
Dell Driver Reset Tool (What the heck is this?)
Modem Event Monitor
Modem Helper
Modem on Hold
My Way Search Assistant (I can't get this off. I try, and it says there was an error. I may have to reinstall it, but I don't trust it.)

There are two Quicktimes listed. One is 76.9 MB, while the other is 1.15. What is the difference? Also, one looks like it is being unpacked from a box in the Icon.

Thanks for your time and patience.

hi. can u tell me which quicktime is the one with the icon that u explained plz. also my way search assistant is spyware and adware (HERE) so try this program it may remove the spyware files on your computer. May i note that when a program shows an error during uninstallation, the uninstall package is either corrupt or one of the uninstall files is missing. I suggest u install spyware blaster first then reinstall my way search assistant to fix the corrupt uninstall package. then uninstall the program using it's uninstall. Dell driver reset tool restores all drivers to the last working state. i recomend leaving this installed. the broad jump thing u should first kill the CDF.exe process in windows task manager then uninstall.more information HERE. After u've uninstalled all the crap, u could try to check for junk files using CCLEANER. hope this helps and isn't too much info!!!

Nothing much to fix here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

A:Something Odd After Cleaning My Computer

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.
I don't find any indication of malware in your log. Have you cleaned out your temp files and emptied your recycle bin? If you haven't done that in a while you'll be amazed at how much junk your computer accumulates that you don't need.

HI I realise this problem has probably been discussed but I haven't the time to check. My computer keeps dieing a slow death.
It started crashing Thursday night. Friday morning I started to try to save it. No hope. Friday afternoon I reinstalled XP as a repair and then spent All day yesterday trying to scan everything as suggested by flyanglersonline. I still can't get adaware to finish and a couple of other programs wouldn't work for me either. This morning I reinstalled XP as new. Now I am here and begging for help.

The main problem I think is a pop-up directing me to registeryrepair and there are others too.
Adaware has an unhandled exception as described here. This is the message it wants me to send as an error report which won't go through. What can I do next please?

DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 2 ON AN INFECTED COMPUTERhttp://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.htmlThe Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XP SP2) fixes a range of bugs in Windows XP. The file is a large download and can be applied to any version of Windows XP Home, Professional, TabletPC or Media Center. It doesn't matter what XP updates you have previously applied to your system, SP2 will update any unpatched, partially patched or completely updated system (it includes all previously released patches and updates). If you are going to reinstall the original release of Windows XP on a PC, it is important that you apply this Service Pack BEFORE connecting to the Web. Nasty viruses and worms like Sasser and Blaster can enter an unpatched system as soon as it is connected to the Web. They come through an open port on your system. You don't even have to receive email or go to a web site - just being connected is enough. XP SP2 fixes the security holes so you won't get attacked. The advantage of this full download is that it can be used on any system - plus it doesn't require an Internet connection to install. You can download SP2, burn it to CD and use it on multiple PCs.

So I had to replace my computer with a used computer coming from my relative. I've tried manually uninstalling each program and software that I know I don't need, but there are plenty that I have no idea about. I've already backed up all the important files that he needs/wants. I just need to know which files to keep and what to get rid of.

I've tried formatting the hard drive, but I guess it's no longer an option because I don't have a disc to reinstall windows.

I own a Windows 7 Home Premium, acer.
If you guys need any more information, I'd be happy to post them.
I'll also run a scan now to check for viruses.

Also, when I ran a scan in HiJack it said:

"Your system denied write access to Hosts File. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may NOT be able to fix this."

I don't understand that, but when I try to open the logfile it says that it cannot find the file. What do I do?

I am not a big fan of registry cleaners; unless you are very careful about what you are doing and deleting, and have some understanding of Windows, you can do your computer more harm than good. There are other more immediate, and safer, things you can do with greater results:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44690/slow-computer/Regards,John

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. Hello all. This is my first post to this forum. I was drawn here in a quest to rid my computer of those infernal pop-ups. I have used Search and Destroy before coming to this forum and it helped with my initial pop-up problems..but I somehow got "infected" again and "Search and Destroy" couldn't help me. I came to this forum and after reading some of the posts..I downloaded "Hi-Jack This" and "Ad-Aware". Both of these programs are "WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!" After running Hi-Jack and then AD-Aware...my pop-up problems disappeared. I still have a few questions concerning the file created by "HI-Jack This". I can pretty much determine what files I don't want any longer..but want some "Expert" advice before removing them with "HI Jack".

I'm curious about the R3 entry "URLSearchHook"..aside from that..is there anything that looks pernicious?

This is a laptop used by a local non-profit organization. The only software that really needs to be on it is QuickBooks and Microsoft Office. It is painfully slow and seems to freeze up often so I tried to uninstall some of the software that I thought was useless (Bing, Google Desktop and Google bar) and the computer wouldn't boot up so I had to go through the repair process to recover. Now I'm afraid to do anything because of that and I don't want to destroy any of the data on the computer.

The previous user said it had never been connected to the internet so there have been no updates since 2008. It has McAfee Security Center installed but it is out of date and the license has expired. There just seems to be a lot of unless software on this computer but this may have been part of the original configuration.

Computer is a Toshiba, Model Satellite A200, Windows Vista Ultimate, 32-bit, 1014 MB Ram, Dual CPU 1.75 GHz.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would just clone the hard drive...saves all data files...then do a clean install and reinstall the two programs you describe as essential.

"Cleaning up" a system that has not been properly cared for...over an extended period of time...is unlikely to prove fruitful.

FWIW: 1GB of RAM might be a tad too little...Office is a system hog...I would not be surprised if the system is infected (the Internet only happens to be the easiest way to develop infection problems on a system, it's not the only way. I don't know if I would believe someone with Bing on the system...if he/she told me that the system had never been connected to the Internet .

My daughter has a computer she uses (upstairs, we share the IP connection) and this morning I decided to go over it, starting with the cleaning up unneeded files in dos (Rollin' Rog told me how to do on mine, elsewhere in this topic)

After that I updated and ran several scans. I had put AVG in this computer for her, last Fall, but it was (now) gone. No links, not in program files, etc. She doesn't know how to remove things and said she didn't do anything that she knew of.

At some point a search address bar called DASH BAR had appeared up top of the screen. On checking the website link with it, it says it's from GAIN. Seems like I read somewhere that's the name GATOR is using now?

I downloaded AVG again, updated adaware and spybot...

AVG found a virus, Trojan horse download stubby A (?) in C\WINDOWS\BELT.EXE Said it was able to take care of it.

In Adaware there were 51 enteries to take out. Mainly GATOR, XUPITER (she had that one other time, and I think there is something special needed to remove it? Besides the scans?)

Several said possible attempt at browser take over.

Spybot found more GATOR after that (and not in adaware files)

I put GATOR in "find" and it came up with of them, 2 said they were zip files (she didn't have winzip on the computer so couldn't have opened them anyway) It mentioned (in the info) Spybot, so I think it might be something related to that, and okay to leave them? I do all these fairly regularly, and they all seem to find different things.

How often should I run these programs, and in what order??

A:Cleaning up computer

Ok, let's see if I can help you here...

Stinger is only for a select group of viruses (I think 32 last I checked), so it is largely a waste of time unless you happen to have one of those selected.

Hijackthis is not something that you should really be messing with at all, unless you have someone who is familiar with the output guiding you. HJT is not an automated tool. It only fixes what you tell it to, and if you tell it the wrong thing, you can really mess up your system. Bad.

Dump the registry cleaning tools... The only times that I have ever used them, they caused huge problems. They work basically by "guessing" what needs to be fixed. It is an educated guess, but they make mistakes, and sometimes they are critical mistakes. I'm sure some people swear by them. I don't.

I only run Spybot adnd Adware maybe once or twice a month. I have Adaware's active protection enabled. I also don't use CCleaner. I have never had any reason to. I have a batch file that cleans my temp folders.

Just an AV is not enough. I have Regprot watching my registry, I have my AV running, I have Agnitum running, all of my updates, SpywareBlaster, and my browser is very locked down.

If you have adequte and layered protections in place, then you shouldn't need to run any of the other tools except for when you suspect there may be a problem. I have enough on my system to catch everything I have run across so far, so I don't worry too much about it.
