USB Mass Storage vanishing Kb on Windows 8/10, but not on Windows 7.

Q: USB Mass Storage vanishing Kb on Windows 8/10, but not on Windows 7.

I'm working with a bootloader program for a product with my company. The code designates the USB connected product to act as a Mass Storage Device with 64Kb of memory. This is important because the image to be loaded is exactly 64Kb. This process
works perfectly for Windows 7. On Windows 8 and Windows 10 when looping at the properties of the Mass Storage Device there is 1Kb of (1024 bytes) of used space when the device should be completely free. I'm not sure where this mystery 1Kb comes from. Does
anyone know the differences between Windows 7 and Windows 8/10 with regards to initializing a Mass Storage Device?

To make this problem even weirder I discovered that if the computer goes into Sleep mode and is woken up from Sleep mode. The the Mass Storage Device is fixed. It shows 64Kb of free space and the mysterious 1Kb is gone. What happens to the USB drive
in sleep mode? Is there a reset that occurs that causes the computer to reread the correct storage space?

When I unplug the USB and re plug it back it the problem returns. And is again fixed by a Sleep mode cycle.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Preferred Solution: USB Mass Storage vanishing Kb on Windows 8/10, but not on Windows 7.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have finally given up so I am posting this. I have an issue in which no USB mass storage devices work on my system. I have tried my BlackBerry, IPod, multiple USB jump drives and a SATA dock. They system recognizes them but won?t install them and they show a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager. The USB ports work as I can use a webcam, scanner or mouse in the same port with no issues. I used a program called DriverMax to make sure all my drivers were up to date but that did not help. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Attached is a report from DriveMax of what drivers are installed.

Welcome to the Seven Forums! texusn

Most likely since the ports are known to be working something is preventing the detection process on those particular items. For the external dock and flash drives once plugged in you should be seeing a popup for running things or viewing the file content.

The two images here what to look for when in the Disk Management for either a drive when present in the docking station or when plugging in a flash drive and displayed in the DM there. The two screens attached here will show that the drive in the external enclosure is being seen as "online" otherwise a right click to find that option rather then setting it to offline would be needed as well as right clicking a second time to assign a drive letter.

This usually is all it takes at first to see any new drive or device initialized. When opening up an explorer afterwards you should be seeing the new drive icon with the drive letter selected in view. As far as DriverMax or any other 3rd party driver locator those are generally a waste of time to begin with since this is a Windows related item not a driver concern as far as detection and automatic installation to make things active. Once detected properly you would see a prompting if any drivers are needed.

Hello, everyone =)

OK, well, I've got an external hard drive that I'm connecting to my USB port. I can mount it just fine in linux (mount /dev/sda1) but in Windows XP Pro, it appears in the system tray as a "USB Mass Storage Device" but I can't seem to access it from "My Computer" in any way. I'm a Linux user who is rather new to Windows, but I still have a feeling that this is not my own problem. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

Thanks in advance

A:Windows XP Pro not seeing a USB Mass Storage Device

You may not have a windows filesystem installed on the drive yet. If that's not the problem, try this fix:

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Hi all, hope you can help again.

I'm having problems getting one of my computers to recognise USB drives. XP searches for the drivers but in the end it comes up saying the device has not been successfully installed.

The problem is specific to USB Mass Storage devices (other USB products work fine) and the same USB drives work fine on my other computers. Any ideas?

Hello, I have a problem with Windows 7 Build 7100. I am running a Fujitsu Amilo Li 1818 laptop. The installation went fine, I had to download a driver for the WLAN card, but everything else works perfectly. However, when I connect a USB thumb drive, or an external USB HD, I can't access it. Windows 7 recognises the device, installs a driver, and the device is visible in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. It doesn't show up in Computer > Devices with Removable Storage. In Device Manager, the USB HD shows up under Disk drives and it says "The device is working properly" and the driver is up to date. However, when the USB HD is connected, it also creates an "Unknown device" entry under other devices in the Device Manager. This part says "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28), and clicking on Update Driver doesn't work ("Windows was unable to install your Unknown Device"). I have installed the Vista chipset drivers from the Fujitsu website. Any ideas how I can fix this? Why does Device Manager recognise the USB HD but also create an "Unknown Device" entry?

A:Windows 7 won't recognize USB mass-storage devices

I've got it fixed now, after reading this: http://forum.freecompromo.com/viewtopic.php?t=181 The solution: step 1! Go into C:\ and create a folder called usbdriver step 2! Go into C:\WINDOWS\INF and copy the whole contents step 3! COPY ALL THAT INTO C:\usbdriver step 4! THEN when your asked to look for the driver! and vista cannot find it POINT IT TO THAT FOLDER C:\USBDRIVER and click ok. Looks like it was a bug from Vista. Hello,

My father has purchased a laptop a month ago or so, and it runs windows vista. I wanted to install windows xp on the laptop, but as soon as the windows xp cd started to load windows on the dos mode I recieved a message stating that my driver cannot be identified or something like that. So I called the gateway tech support and they told me that this laptop has this message that i recieved because of their policy and that you are really not supposed to downgrade and all that nonsense.

However, the technician also told me that it is possible to install the windows xp on my laptop, and all I needed was something called MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER in order for the laptop to identify the hardrive or driver.

Would anyone be able to tell me how I can successfully install windows xp on my laptop so that I can be ready to use it for school soon.

Thank you,

I have a rather strange problem with my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything seems to work fine except for USB mass storage devices.  I have USB keyboard, mouse and even a USB audio (wireless headset) all working fine on the computer.  But
any USB external drive, thumdrive or USB card reader with flash cards inserted into the USB port of my computer won't work.
Windows keeps reporting that it is unable to find the driver.  When I go into the Device Manager console and choose to manually update the driver, then point it to the C:\Windows (with search for sub-directories enabled), it detects the USB Mass Storage
driver but complains that it is unable to load it.  The exact message is this:  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered error while attempting to install it.  USB Mass Storage Device.  The system cannot find the file
specified.
This happens to ALL USB Mass storage device, and it doesn't matter which port I plug the device into.
Here's the weird thing, I have VMware Workstation installed on this computer and if I power on a VM that runs Windows 7 32-bit as the Guest OS and connect the USB storage devices to the guest OS via VMware Workstation, the USB storage devices work!
So it would appear that the USB ports are functioning properly but for some reasons, my Windows 64-bit is unable to load the driver.
Any idea how to fix this besides a "nuke it from orbit" and format/reinstall Windows?... Read more

A:Windows 7 64-bit not loading USB mass storage driver

Found the problem.  For some strange reasons, a few files in the C:\Windows\inf directory went missing, 2 of those was usbstor.inf and usbstor.PNF.  What I did was to copy the C:\Windows\inf directory from my properly functioning laptop to this
problematic computer (skipping all existing files) and it resolved the problem.

Weird though, I never deleted anything from the INF directory, not sure how those USB Mass Storage driver files went missing in the first place.

The problem originated after i tried to "low format" a USB memory that a coworker asked if i could fix, it had a "Protect against writing" message, i was not able to format it, but i was able to copy stuff from it, but not add new stuff to it. I tried several google tutorials, changed registry values and run some CMD commands, found the same information on several sites with no luck. The USB memory remained "locked".

Long story short, i gave up, when i disconnected the USB drive i noticed all my shortcuts from the desktop disappeared? and also all my bookmarks in Firefox?, i was astonished.

Now 4-6 days ago i wanted to copy ome videos and a portable version or MPC-HC, but then i connected my USB 32gb memory flash ( my personal USB memory, not the one i was trying to format) into my 3.0 port, and well... it was not found in my computer folder !!. I tried to look into the manage device > storage device to see if it was a problem with the "letter label" but no! is not there either!. And yes, the USB worked on my other laptop as normal. All my other USB peripherals work perfectly, mouse, keyboard etc.

Next i went into device manager, and found a yellow triangle as shown in the picture, and when i clicked the "show hidden devices" i found that there was the name of the usb that i tried to low format !! greyed out!, I instantly uninstall it with no luck from the device manager, is not there anymore since i saw it, but even so ... hey guys, im new here (signed up solely to ask this question cuz it looks like a pretty cool site) and i need some advice

so i built my own computer out of purchased parts about a year ago but its been having freezing problems until a few months ago (bad hard drive lol!). i havent noticed this problem til recently (due to the constant efforts to diagnose the freezing/crashing) but my computer seems to eject any usb mass storage device when i try to say.... copy files into or out of whatever drive is connected, whether its a flash drive or my phone's sd card (which is connected via usb).

For example: this happened today - i tried to drag an .avi file out of a SanDisk cruzer and the windows dialog box pops up to tell me that it has begun copying. after 5 minutes, it is still 'Calculating...' the ETA and i notice that the explorer window that displays the content of the drive has been turned into that washed-out, unresponsive state. Running Windows 7, if i try to close the window, i get the choice to either close the program, wait for it to respond, or some other thing.

this happens if i plug any usb drive into any usb port (front or back) on my computer. Wow that was a lot to write. well if anyone has come across this sort of problem before or can help point me in the right direction,

PLEASE REPLY

At long last I'm ready to replace my trusty Adaptec 2940UW with a 2940U2W. All my hard drives are SCSI, one will be retired at this upgrade (not the boot drive).

I'm concerned there may be problems if I just simply swapped the two controllers, ie worries about getting a STOP "Inaccessible Boot Disk" screen, but I don't really want to go through all the rigmarole of reinstalling Windows 2000 "just in case".

What do the august contributors to this forum think would be a sensible series of steps to make sure the switchover is smoothe and which hopefully avoids a reinstall?

Thanks in advance for your help!

A:Advice please: upgrading mass storage adapter in Windows 2000 Professional

before you make the switch, copy the setup files/drivers to the hard drive. then power off the system, replace the card and reboot to safe mode. Set your drivers in Safe Mode then reboot from there. Windows should see it and run with it with no problems.

After all...Isn't 2000 supposed to be Plug & PRAY???

Have recently received delivery of a new computer (based around the Athlon dual core 64 chip) and am looking to transfer my existing external hard drive and DVD-rom. However when I connect up my external HDD, Windows XP media centre edition 2005 initially recognises it as a new USB device but after a short period of searching returns the message - hardware not installed because wizard cannot find necessary software.

According to installation leaflet for the external drive, the driver for the hard disk is already built into the windows XP system. From what I understand the driver it should be loading is - USB 2.0 Hub

(When I attach the external drive to my old machine it initially recognises it as a USB device then shortly after it identifies it as a USB mass storage device. The new machine only gets as far as identifying it as a USB device.)

Is there any way of forcing windoew on the new machine to recognise it as a USB hub / mass storage device?

Grateful for any advice on this.

We recently purchased a FujiFilm FinePix 1300 digital camera. This camera uses USB Mass storage to access the smartmedia. As of this writing, I have installed and un-installed the driver countless times in any type of boot that I could come up with! No matter what is running, be it my few startup programs or just SysTray and Explorer, the computer ALWAYS locks up tighter than a drum whenever we try to access the camera. So tight that I have to overide via the power button to shut down. I'm running a HP Pavilion 6630, 256MB ram, Win98se. This is really frustrating! As I was successful the first try at installing it on my HP pavilion 4430 at work. It ran like a charm! And I might mention, that program wise, this computer and mine at work are almost identical in the installed programs. I use my home machine for work also!

Anyone have any ideas before I throw in the so called proverbial towel, and return the camera for a Sony????
Thanks!

Hi,
I have windows 7 enterprise edition. Couple of days back I had plugged in external harddisk and after I am done with that, I did not find "Safely Remove...." icon on the tray. Normally if I can not stop the harddisk, (even if all the apps and windows are closed), I go to sleep mode, remove the harddisk and wake the OS up. But last time I tried something different. I disabled the USB Mass storage (I read this some where on the net and they said to enable it after removing the disk) device under device manager. But I can not see that icon/device back in the list to enable it back.
Now if I plug in my harddisk OS won't do anything. If I plug other devices like USB mode, it works fine. How can I re-enable it back ? I tried to search , but could not find a solution (there was one solution for XP, as it was registry stuff not sure whether the same works for 7). I tried penyuusb, but due to some problem it is not getting activated (free software).

Can someone please help me ?

Thanks

If I have lots of files (more than 70) on a DVD-RW. Windows takes ages to read the disk and be ready to access the files.

Is there an optimum way of doing this that makes Windows happier?

I update the files fairly regularly.

I do have DVD buring software. (In any case, if I use Windows to update the disk, it finalises the disk.)

I remember with earlier versions of Windows using a UDF reader, and then there was no speed problem.

A:Using DVD-RWs for mass storage

I am not sure I understand what yu are asking. I think you are asking about using DVDs for backups. If that is correct, I would suggest investing in an external hard drive. They are relatively cheap right now and all of the information is in one place. I have 4 externals and use them daily. Redundancy of backups is the key. esata and USB 3.0 if you have them are great and much faster.
If you decide to go that route, look into using microsoft sync toy. Once you set it up, just push the run button and it will syncronize any folder or entire hard drive you want. I use it for my user folder. Best of all, it's free.

BTW there doesn't seem to be an option for Windows 10 forum. So I  had to choose Windows 8.

1st of all everything was fine until 2nd of December.

My Laptop installation of Winodw 7 and then upgraded to 10 was configured from the start to have the USER folders (u sing a script provided by Microsoft) on an SD card through an Expresscared media read/write because my system disk is a 64gig SSD
( which BTW means that system restore has been disabled).

on 3rd of December when:

I turned the machine on it couldn'the read my user profile.I tried to login in safe mode but I got sihost warning: unknown hard Error! But I got into prompt screen and ran diskpartThere is an inbuilt SD card reader slot in the machine where I store large downloadBut the system could only see the main SSD and the expresscared SD card with user folders on itI ran sfc /scannow &  then DISM and the sfc /scannow again until both were successful. But again diskpart  only detected the SSD and Expresscard SD cardBut the attributes on the SD card claims that Current state read-only : Yes although read-only flag is No.I have checked the SD card on other machines and it is not write protectedI have tried introducing writeprotected entry in the registry with values of 0 and 1 without successI have tried everything else that I could in Safe mode but other than what is expected in safemode (e... I am having trouble with my IPOD I was wondering if this error was the reason it wasn't working?
This is what error message comes up for the mass storage device:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

A:Mass Storage Device

I always reply to the head scratchers. Please un-plug/turn off all your USB devices EXCEPT the Ipod, your keyboard, and mouse. This includes your printer, and any Jump Drives you may have plugged in.

1.) Open your Device Manager
-Right click on my computer
-Select 'properties'
-Click the 'hardware' tab
-Press Device Manager

2.) Do you see your Ipod on the list? If so, uninstall your IPOD. I don't have an IPOD so i don't know what group it would be stored in, but I would assume your Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

3.) Download a new Ipod driver or load the Ipod driver off your cd like you did the first time you installed it.

I hope this fixes it.

I plugged in my external Hard Drive (Laptop Hard Drive in a USB cradle) and it worked fine - Opend it up and browsed some files. I then a day later plugged it in and it asked for drivers, It searched windows update but did not find any. I cannot not access the drive although it worked first time.

Any ideas?

Thanks, John.

I am trying to give mysyelf a mass storage device, and so far it hasn't worked. First, I tried a 640G Hitchahci USB hard drive, but I received error messages during data transfer. I replaced it with a Hammer 640G USB unit. The same thing happened. I also noticed that the packaking (AC adaptor, etc USB cable, etc) were identical, except the Hammer was $10 more. So I figured MicroCenter (where I get my hardware) got a shipment of USB drives from the same manufacturer just with different housing and brand name (Hammer and Hitachi). I exchamged the second one for a Maxtor OneTouch4 1TB USB drive at MicoCenter. The same thing happens: I plug it in and XP doesn't find it. I tried every USB slot on my box, and it still doesn'r work. This should be the easiest thing in the world to do, plug in a USB mard drive and have it work.

All ideas and opinions are more than welcome. Thanks!

Hi All,

Been using the new Windows 7 for a week or so now, everything is great! But i have one big issue. Every time i plug in a USB pen drive or my tomtom device, a window appears with a message saying that the device drivers can not be installed. When i click on the ballon message it just displays the device followed by a red X and 'Failed'

I have tried many usb mass storage devices and i still have the same issue.

Can anyone help???

Thank you for your time.

Gareth

Sounds like you have some issue involving "uppers filters" and USB ports and devices. Do any USB devices work well?

You could Google that and try to find an answer or how to edit the registry to repair it. I'd tell you but I forget where to look in the registry to do this.

In any case, if you attempt, set a restore point before.

Try a Windows Update while device(s) is/are attached. See if they need a drive letter assigned in disk management.

If not, pick your favorite one and right click on it in the device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. No screenshots as alternative, please.

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with my computer recognizing any form of USB storage device. This is isolated to only mass storage devices. I have no explanation for the cause of this sudden problem as my system has been unchanged in terms of software and hardware.

The problem was first noticed when I connected my USB pen drive and the computer did not respond. Trying other drives the problem remained, and even when connecting my external hard disk there was no recognition.

I have since done everything I can think of to fix this:
Uninstalling drivers for the USB sticks via device manager when connected,
Uninstalling USB Drivers completely, restarting and reinstalling
Attempting to replace the "USBSTOR.sys" File..

In every instance of reinstalling the drivers i get the following messages;

"There was a problem installing the drivers for your hardware"
Looking at the device itself in device manager reads:
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
When I do go through the reinstall process, and the computer installs the USBSTOR file from windows, it gives me the error:
"Driver not intended for this platform"

Event viewer might give a hint to the problem though - the repeated (to about a million) error is:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7
Date: 06/03/2008
Time: 14:28:18

hi i am using an external hard disk drive for my backup files that is connected via usb, every time i try to disconnect the device a window pops out saying....

"Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device...The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later."

here is the story, the external hard disk drive that i am using came from a downed laptop, i extracted the hdd and bought a casing for it so i can use as backup for my files. i just deleted everything from it and formatted the hdd. everytime i disconnect it a window pops out just like above. i ran a combofix scan and on the log file under "other deletions" it says..."c:\windows\system32\AutoRun.inf". i tried to disconnect the usb mass storage device again and still the above warning is showing....

i need help on this, what should i do? i have the entire combofix log file if you need it.

i hope you guys can help me with this one tnx in advance.

Please note the message text in blue at the top of this forum. You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert who can interpret the logs. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Combofix was never meant to be used as a general purpose malware scanner like SuperAntispyware or Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. That's the decision by the creator and we will abide by that decision.Further, ComboFix logs are not permitted outside the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum and then only when requested by a HJT Team member. The error you describe is usually the result of an application, file, open document which is in use (running from the USB flash drive) when you try to remove it by clicking on the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area. The error can also be caused if your anti-virus is actively monitoring/scanning the USB drive. Normally, when removing a fash drive from a USB port, Windows should stop all the read-write operations on the drive so that it can be safely removed. If not, the flash drive can be damaged or data may be lost/corrupted. However, if Windows determines a file is in use, then it may provide a message which indicates the volume ... Read more

I have a Genesys usb mass storage unit. I have the Vista driver and it's been installed properly. The problem is that it doesn't show up as a drive under my "computer."

I have tried to update the driver, uninstall and re-install and it still won't show up. It does show up in the "safely remove hardware" window and the device manager.

A:USB Mass Storage Device

Try these.... they are harmless steps...
1:stop plug and play service in services.msc and restart it... then,
2:start->right click on "computer"-> left click on manage-> on L.H.S. click on storage, click on disk management...on the R.HS. check in disk management if that USB drive shows up as unallocated space. If yes, reply to this post.

hello all i have what i consider a hard problem but someone here can help me with. i puchased a usb 2.0 mass storage h/d. been using it for a while with no problems, i let a friend borrow it for loading some files, format and reload saved files. he told me that he installed what he wanted to keep, then formatted his hardrive with mine still plugged in. when he attempted to use it after the reloade windows would not allicate a drive letter for the drive. i think the hardrive just needs formatted and re-partitioned, but i can't figure out how too do it because there is no signature to the drive. i have tried usb boot drivers for dos and got an error usb target not found. the drive does show up in devise manager but i can't access from windows. i am running windows 2k pro on service pack 4 , the format was done with win xp pro corperate. all i want too no is how too resetup the drive. any answers would be appreciated. thanks THE NUT.

It may be preferable that you contact the maker of the USB 3 Controller.

In NA that's Renesas Electronics America .

There may be a driver or firmware that you need.

In the future (and I am speaking to general public here), please copy and paste this information instead of using a screenshot.

I'll see what I can do. It's an Acer 6in1 card reader I think.]
