A couple of backup questions

Q: A couple of backup questions

I am going to reinstall Windows 7 its a Premium version. At the moment the PC has 2 HDDs C and D, C contains windows and D has my date.

My Questions.
I would like to backup C after i have done the install of Windows and got all the drivers setup. Is it best to activate windows before i do the backup.

If i use something like Clonzilla will the image fit on a DVD

Preferred Solution: A couple of backup questions

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Yes, activate before you make the image. Why not? If you don't activate it first and then restore the image, you'd have to activate after the restoration.

The image is not likely to fit on one DVD. It might fit on 5 DVDs, but DVDs are a poor place to put images--they are just less reliable than a hard drive. Use DVDs only as a last resort if you absolutely have no other choice. Be prepared for DVDs to fail and know what you will do when that happens.

Clonezilla should work, but it's not the preferred tool on this forum.

The Story:
On my gf's computer (HP Mini 110) I updated the OS from 7 Starter to 7 Professional back in January. No problems until 2 days ago when her touchpad stopped working. I then called HP customer service to send it in to get it fixed and they told me that there is a driver compatibility issue with the 2 versions and said that it must be put back to starter in order for the warranty to stand (upgrading or downgrading OS or OS versions arent covered under the warranty)

What I need to do (I mostly need confirmation):
I am going to use the restore partition from HP to restore back to starter. However the pc does not have a cd drive. I have a 300GB external that I plan to backup the whole image to. My concerns are:when I restore back to starter, do I have to go through activation all over again? Not a problem though cause key is on bottom of PC
Once I send back to HP and they return the PC will have starter, Do I just do a restore and point to the image on the external drive???
If that is the correct way, do I then again have to worry about activating my 7 Professional again? I just dont want to have to search the whole house trying to find where I wrote the key. (Yes it is a legal copy)
I just would like to know what to expect when I am going though this. My gf would kill me if I lost all of her documents from the past 7 years that she meticulously has organized.

Basically what I need is to temporarily switch to starter, and within the starter, do a res... Read more

A:A couple backup and restore questions

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If the touchpad driver has worked previously in Pro then it will work again in Pro.

I would recommend you try a few basic trouble shooting techniques:Restart the trackpad using the FN shortcuts on the F keys (often FN+F7)
If possible roll back the touchpad driver (Roll Back Troublesome Device Drivers in Windows Vista - How-To Geek)
Update the driver (Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly)
Try doing a system restore to before the problem started (System Recovery Options)

If none of these work then that is when I would consider sending your PC off to be fixed (and if you put it back to starter the driver might start to work again anyway, if I've understood you correctly).

I hope this comes in helpful and if none of this works I'll be more than happy to help you get your PC back in Warranty.

Win 7 HP 64 bit
Edit: I have edited out "MBR" and replaced it with "System Reserved."
I've had my computer for about 5 years and have never gotten Windows Image backup to work properly.
I now have EaseUs Todo Backup free edition. ( Got a severe adware with the download of EaseUs Partition Master and Todo.)
EaseUs backup has a System backup that aparently makes an Image of the C: partition only. I'm pretty sure that if I ever need to recover from that, I will have a bootable C: drive again. But, I need to image my D: partition also. EaseUs has a feature 'Disk/Partition backup' that allows me to select my System Reserved, C:Windows, and D:Programs, partitions.
Does anyone know if, by using EaseUs Todo 'Disk/Partition' backup, it will create a restoreable, bootable image for my primary drive, C: and D: partitions? Basically, does Disk/Partition backup make a normal restorable image as long as you have it include the System Reserved?
Second question:
Can I create a bootable DVD with EaseUs Todo backup software on it?

A:EaseUs Todo backup - Couple of questions please.

Okay, I figured out how to make the bootable disk. It's in the tools stuff. Took me two hours to actually get one made though.
So, I still need to know if I can use 'Disk/Partition backup' to make a restoreable, bootable image of my C: and D: partitions as long as I include System Reserve with it?

1. Fan
During my build, I accidentally pulled the fan wires from from the (molex?) connector. When making contact in the right way, the wires are still able to make the fan spin so I know it is definitely salvageable. May anyone suggest a way to fix this, or at least keep the wires in contact with the connector? I do not own any soldering equipment, all I really have is a precision screwdriver set
EDIT: Here's a pic:
2. For any DD-WRT/OpenWRT/router experts
Instead of buying a wireless PCI-E adapter, I think I may be able to use my D-Link DSL-G604T with the OpenWRT software. But my problem is that I have no clue how to use OpenWRT, and this page to me seems like a a whole other language to what I know. If anyone is familiar with the open source firmware, would you be so kind to give me simple instructions as to setup my wireless router as a wireless adapter (client bridge..)?

Thanks in advance to answers for either question

A:A couple of questions!

Hello Dom,

Q1) Are the pins still at the end of the wires? If so, then you may be able to push the pins back into the molex connector until they snap back into place. Just be sure to put them in the correct slots.

If not, then if you have some spare parts that use the same molex connector, you could cut off the cable on it, then splice the fan to the spare molex connector's cable, and use electrical tape to cover the splices.

Q2) Sorry, I have no idea on this.

Hope this helps some,

1. I used the cleaner in windows to clean my 120gb external and what it did was compress several 'old' files on the drive. These files now show up in blue. Anyways, can I return those files back to being uncompressed?

2. On that same drive I have about 800 folders in one directory. When I click on the folder name it takes forever to access the directories. I decided to make 8 folders and divide the 800 on the 8 but when I click on the folder to access them all it still takes forever. Can I sleed this up without moving the folders to different directories outside it's root folder?

A:A couple questions

1) Right click file, click properties, click advanced... uncheck compress file. Why would you want to do that, you will lose disk space. XP is capable of reading the file in compressed mode without any problems. The blue is just to tell you that the file is compressed. Harmless

2) if you have many files or folders within a directory it will take a few seconds to read that directory. You will need to lessen the amount of files and folders within that directory to make it read faster.

hi guys, hope you can give me the answers i've been looking for.

first of all, is it possible to make the folder background transparent as well as the border?
i know windowblinds has this as an option in some themes, so there must be some kind of dll tweak that can enable it.

second, the annoying preview window....how do i get rid of it completely?
i've tried disabling aero peek, and someone suggested increasing the hover delay registry tweak, but i just want rid of it altogether.

and lastly, if anyone knows anything about reshack, i'm wanting to change the system logos on the system properties screen, but i cant find them in basebrd.dll, anyone know the exact string or location of these logos?

thanks in advance

A:Couple of questions

for the first question yes some themes can change this have a look here i believe there is one in the list that does as you describe http://www.sevenforums.com/customiza...ttons-177.html or http://www.sevenforums.com/customiza...ws-7-a-12.html

as for your second request imnot sure why the registry trick didn't work but im pretty sure we have a tutorial on that you could check out.

As you can see I'm new to these forums, and I have a few questions.
I'm certain they have been asked before, but I reckon it's faster to just ask them all in the same place. I hope you guys don't mind.

First of all: I have created a custom themepack based on the game Battle Forge.
This themepack consists of sounds from the game, some wallpapers, a script for changing the login screen.
Simply put it's pretty decent, if I may say so myself.

However, it's lacking a couple of advanced tweaks which would make it awesome.
I would like to customize:
-The "textures" of the windows, start menu, etc.
-Start menu button. (Orb?)

I realize that all this might be a bit too much for me to handle on my own, since I'm not very good at Photoshop.
My current problem is that I don't know how to change all this stuff.

I found a program called Windows Blinds which can change your windows theme.
The problem with this program is that not everyone has it, and I would like to make my themepack "independent". -Using simple .bat file scripts for changing stuff.

To begin: what I first need is to know if it's possible to somehow change the start menu button by changing some key in the registry or something? If yes, I would like to know how.
I also need to know how to create a custom button, what file format to use, size, etc. -A detailed tutorial for this would be great.

I will continue with questions about icons and whatnot when I've finished the start menu button... Read more

Hi, I apologize in advance for this really long post and I know these questions were asked a million times, but I can't seem to find anything accurate through search.

Recently, only 8GB of RAM became usable from the 12GB (4x3 Corsair Dominator 9,9,9,24 1.65v) I have installed. After testing each RAM and slots individually, I get these results:

A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 (default setting) = 8/12 GB RAM used

A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = Windows won't boot (blank screen)
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = Windows won't boot (blank screen)
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB

Now the weird part.

A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = Windows won't boot (blank screen)
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1C2 = Windows won't boot (blank screen)
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 8 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 8 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB
A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 = 4 GB

It seems a stick in B1 would prevent my system from booting. I pretty much concluded that Channel B stopped working and I will need a new Motherboard. Now, to the questions;

1. When a "slot" becomes faulty, does the entire channel (both slots) normally stop working altogether like my results above? Is it safe to say this is a motherboard failure?

2. Even though B2 has stopped working, Windows is still detecting 12GB RAM on my system. Am I still on Triple Channel mode using A2, B2, and C2?

A:A Couple of RAM Questions

What program did you use to test your ram?

Where are you getting your information on how much ram is useable?
Installed ram and useable ram is two different things.

If you have a bad slot on the motherboard it will not matter what ram you use the slot is still bad. Mixing ram is not a good thing.

The slot you think is bad; will any ram module work in it?

1. Their is not a way to know exactly what is wrong with the ram.
Just knowing it's bad is enough.

2. Window 7 gets ram information from the motherboard.

Hello, I'm here to ask a couple of questions because I found this forum to be very helpful in the past. My first question is that I think I should overclock my CPU. The reason for this is that because my CPU is pretty old now and it's nearly if not being bottle-necked. I'm completely new to overclocking so I'd appreciate your suggestions as to if I should overclock and how to do it, safely without damaging any components. I will buy a new processor when I gather the money but for now I think it would be ideal if I overclocked it.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition;3.21ghz.
GPU: XFX DD Radeon 7950;3GB.
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3 2x2 4GB
MB: (Gigabyte) GA-MA770T-UD3P (rev. 1.0)
PSU: Cooler master Real Power620 (620W)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

(If I've failed to list some required information just tell me, I'll add it.)

My second question is to do with the heat of my computer. I'm really worried about it, I've submitted a picture of what the computer temperature is like whilst IDLE.

From the picture only the GPU is running at a good temperature and that's most likely because it has two fans and a special cooling system. If this is what the heat is like whilst idle you can only imagine the heat whilst gaming. I currently have both sides of the case off, I've heard it has it's advantages and disadvan... Read more

I have no idea how a hard drive really works. Are there moving parts in there besides the disk spinning that could be scrapping? Or could it simply be a disk reader making those noises as it moves?

ad 2) Most hard drives do that. It is the arm that moves around. It is some rasping sound. I would not worry about it.

where to begin.... I'm really just looking for some answers here which have been on my mind with my recent virus infection.I've posted the required logs in the proper section and am desperately waiting for help, but searching around I'm unable to find answers to the questions I have here.first, upon discovery that I had a virus, spybot was the program to discover it, the computer wouldn't boot into normal mode, I can only run in safe mode. When I "cleaned" the virus with spybot, my computer booted into normal mode for about 10 mins and then crashed, and failed to boot normally again, resulting in me being forced to use safe mode again.What happened that the virus was able to reinfect my windows install after being "removed"??One of the first things I tried before I knew I had a virus, was to pop in a new 80GB HD, NO PARTITIONS. I did have my other 4 HD's plugged in at the time. as soon as I booted up the computer, I received a warning about the boot sector was going to be modified...... stupidly I allowed this as I assumed it was part of the PE CD I was going to use to prepare the new HD.I partitioned the drive and tried to install windows. upon reaching "Installing Devices" the install would crash after loading my keyboard and mouse, the same point at which windows would crash when trying to boot into normal mode.on a new clean install, how is this virus being loaded by the windows installer, when it obviously isn't part ... Hello, I have just a couple of questions I hope someone can help me with.
First is; Is there a big difference in Windows XP. ME and 98 and if so what are they? Are they are just as good as the other, just more advanced.
Second is; I have Dell Computer with dial up. I have always connected around 55600-56000 and have never had any problems. A few weeks back, all of a sudden, I started losing connection after 10-15 minutes. I always connected right back with no problem, but only for 10- 20 minutes at the most. Now I have noticed that it connects at 53600. I have reinstalled my software, PC says my modem doesn't need updating. What can I do about this?? Please Let me know something Thanks

A:Couple of questions please

To answer the first is to make a comparison between XP and the older operating systems.
XP has an NT 5.0 core similar to the older NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 while the 9X-ME OSs
have the older MS Dos shell they work from. ME was the last there with no shutdown to a
dos mode available. The NTFS method still remains faster then the FAT32 seen in both the
98 and ME versions. And, it has a more network orientated design. Plus a more effective
hardware detection method.

How old is the hardware you have? A sudden slow down steadily seen could indicate that
the modem is beginning to fail due to age and wear. It be a simple dust buildup that now
is causing a loss of contact in the pci slot where it is installed. These are just a few things
here to examine and refer to.

Hi all -

I'm new here and a little timid as I'm not a member of any other "tech" forum. The only reason I am here is cause I recently purchased a Toshiba Laptop that came with Home Premium 64bit. When I asked if I could please have XP installed I was told - no way. So I'm stuck with an OS I have no manuals for - other then the Dummies book I bought - and have heard a lot of bad things about. (Else why would Micros... be franticly releasing Windows 7?)

I have a couple of dumb questions right off that if someone could direct me to where I can find answers I would be very grateful. First - the signiture at the bottom of peoples posts - how do I make one for me? I've looked all through my profile section and can't find where I would create it. And the second dumb question is - what are those little square boxes that appear in the upper left of a desktop icon when you click on it used for? Do they have an actual purpose?

Thank you in advance for having a forum where folks like me can ask dumb questions and - hopefully - get straight answers.

I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).

Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?

Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?

Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?

A:A couple of questions

Don't run random files which you lose track of to clean or optimize Windows 7. It needs no tweaking whatsoever besides normal settings.

CCleaner and Auslogics Defraggers are what I have found works best to clean it up, nothing else.

You can use the Win7 backup to save an image and file backup externally, but it does waste space so its better IMO to save the image backup from when Win7 is running best, then periodically drag your active User files to external. If you need incremental backup use Win7 backup program.

If your system is slow, uncheck all startup freeloaders in msconfig>Startup tab except AV and gadgets. Use a lightweight AV like free MS Security Essentials that doesn't bog the OS. Watch the Event Viewer to Google repeat errors for solution.

I've right clicked it and tried to make sure that all the security bypasses were made by allowing myself privileges to delete it, but no use. How do I go about doing this?

2.I currently have the Asus z68 vpro, and I was wondering if lucid virtu is something worth activating? As far as I know, I understand that the mechanics include switching from the onboard graphics to my actual graphics card, depending on what i'm doing.
Is it worth activating? It looks kind of complicated to get started? If so, what kind of drivers would I need?

3. Is there a way where I can add programs to my "Control panel uninstall" section? I say this because I've transfered game files from a USB over to my harddrive, and it doesn't show up there

Edit: For question number one, while trying to delete the file via cmd, I saw something that said eula.rtf. I'm not sure what that means.

A:A couple questions

Let's go at this one and only one problem at a time.

For problem #1, did I miss what you are trying to delete?

Also to make sure that we understand your disk layout,, then we need following:

Run disk management:
This method gives you a display without the unneeded navigation pane.
WIN=key with Microsoft logo on top.

Maximize the output of Disk Management:
ALT-Spacebar key combo | X key (selects Maximize) |
Drag the field separators (such as between Status and Capacity) to show entire field.

Make a snapshot:
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save

Post the snapshot:

Hi guys,

So I've gone from 7057 -> 7077 (IMO best build) -> 7127 -> 7201 -> 7232 -> and now moving onto the RTM. Here's a couple questions.

1) If I run the windows file transfer on 64 bit, will it still load my files and settings if I install 32 bit?

2) I know this has been asked numerous times but since I don't do a lot of video editing, barely any, is 64 bit really useful? The major downside for 64 bit on my end is it doesn't recognize my printer (I've tried everything) but 32 bit does. Does 32 bit use 3 gigs of ram or 3.5?

3) Will my games like Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source, NFS, TDU, etc. perform better under 32 bit or 64 bit?

4) Does the 64 bit version run more processes on a clean install than a 32 bit clean install? If so, can I ask why?

5) I don't need all the extra features 7 professional and ultimate offer, so am I fine with home premium?

6) Is 64 bit a little more secure than 32 bit?

I think that's about it.

1) No Clue, sorry.

2) IMO x64 is the future. If u want to update your RAM to more <= 4 GB Ram you should stick to x64. How much is recognized of the other devices your using like graphic card and other things that were used by default. x86 can adress only 4 GB of Ram.. but some bandwith is reserved for PCI,PCIe, AGP whatever.

Hey everyone! I have a couple of questions.

1) My Trend Micro AV is out of date, and no longer of use to me. Should I just uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs, and is it safe to delete all the quarantined files with it? I have hundreds (yes...) of quarantined files.

2) Which free program should I install in its place? I have tried AVG on another computer but I don't really care for it (the automatic updates really annoy me, unless there is a way to turn it off). I've heard Avast is good, but people prefer Avira over it, and in all honesty I've never even heard of Avira before. So what program should I use?

Thank you.

A:Couple Questions

Remove Trend Micro and then do a search for any remaining files or folders. If you have items in quarantine and you have not experienced any problems with you computer, it is safe to remove them when you remove the program. If you are unsure, wait for a week to see if there are any operating problems before you do the remove.

I use Avast and am happy with it. It updates automatically two or three times a day. You might look at other threads in this forum (there are many) to read the opinions of others about Avira and Avast. You will find differing opinions. You may wish to try each to determine which one you prefer.

It's me again. Just got my certified, refurbished, windows 10 computer.
It's not set up yet. Working on that today.

A paper in with the computer says Windows 10 is not activated.
Does this mean I cannot use it until 10 is activated or what? I found a couple of answers that left me confused.
One said it must be activated to use windows 10, one said you have 30 days to activate, but neither said if it can be set up/used in the mean time.

I've also been researching, trying to Identify which Java is for windows 10. But can't seem to find a specific answer to that either. I am not sure, since it's not set up, what bit, etc., the 10 is. I know there are security issues with 10, but I have no choice but to have it.

Really hoping I have much better luck with this computer!
Thanks in advance for your help.

I built myself a new computer and installed Win7 64 bit OEM on the 1 tb drive. Disk management will not let me shrink the C drive any smaller than 1/2 tb. I would like to shrink it to 100 gigs and create several smaller drives. Is there any way to do this. It would not be a big problem to start over right now as I have install nothing else. Or, will the latest version of Easus partition manager do it? Also is it possible to remove the 100 gig system restore volume that was created?

Second question. Has anyone had any experience with PCMover? I would be moving programs from a Win 32 bit to the Win 64 bit.

Thanks for any help.

A:A couple of questions.

You can use software like gparted, but I would just start over. Boot from the DVD, do a clean install with format and set the partitions. Leave that small partition that is for booting etc.

Hi, my wife's friend has asked some questions that i am unsure about i was wondering if anyone knew anything about them.

"On the ‘My Computer’ icon you click properties, then click ‘Device Manager’ and a list is shown of the devices on your computer. One of the devices is the ‘Monitor.’ My Monitor is an IBM G74. Another device on my computer is the ‘Display Adapter.’ What is the purpose of the ‘Display Adapter, please? The reason I am asking is that about every two or three hours, my monitor flashes once as though it is trying to resize the screen. I can’t work out why it does this, but when it happens unexpectedly it gives you a fright. I run Windows 98 and all tests done on the hardware and monitor show no faults. On the 1st May I reinstalled all my programs, but it did not solve the problem."

"I got a friend of mine here to enrol in the MA course this year. He was given the G21 CD-ROM. When he puts it in the education computer here, a message comes up saying, “Direct Media Player requires 3MB of Virtual Memory.” He is unable to view the CD-ROM as it won’t play. The education computers here are all the latest models and they run Windows XP. His disk works fine on my computer that runs Windows 98. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you."

Hope some one can help.
Regards, Rob

Display adapter is your video card.

Check the virtual memory settings per the following
Windows XP
1. right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
4. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
5. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
6. Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, click Set, and then click OK.
7. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.

what utilities are included in windows 2000, and windows xp?
what are some new utilities under developement?
what are the most effective way to "package" utilities for consumers?

A:Couple Questions.

We would need your definition of "utilities" as may OEM installations included third party programs bundled, that are not part of Windows.

There is no way any person could know what is being developed, but probably not a lot for older operating systems, probably nothing for 2000. Unless new Vista programs are backwards compatible (would vary). Youi would need to contact each of the 100's of thousands of third party software companies to see if they would divulge what they are up to. Highly unlikely to be productive.

CD is the best packaging method, as installable exe files.

I just found this forum yesterday and I have some questions about spyware removal.I read the "read this before posting a log" info and was trying to follow last night but ran into some issues and had to postpone until now.Do I need to have IE as my default browser to install the hijackthis programs?When I tried,a window came up asking and a no resonse wont let me finish.I have Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy and have been trying to get rid of coolwebsearch and about:blank but cant seem to completely get rid of it.I switched browsers to Mozilla Firefox but still get some pop ups that started when the aboutblank stuff started.I would appreciate any help or advice you folks can give.Thanks,Al

A:I have a couple of questions.

No. You dont need IE to run HijackThis.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, you're saying that HijackThis refuses to run. If that's so, please download & run PepiMK's CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool .

Give it a try first. Let us know how it went.

I'm working through a couple laptops and reinstalling operating systems. I decided to use W7 on a few of them, including a unit that I am using on my own. I've been fiddling around with it for an hour or so and have some questions, a list which I'm sure will be added to later:

1) I have firefox 'pinned' to the taskbar, but when I have a FF window open, the icon in the lower left disappears and is replaced by the firefox window bar. I would like to keep the small icon there as a quick way to open an entirely new window. Can/How do I do this?

2) Again in firefox, when the window is maximized, there is still a small gap between the taskbar and the bottom of the FF browser window. Can/How do I fix this?

Just set up W7 Pro...3 initial questions please....

1) In sleep mode...will my anti-virus full scan/system scans, etc continue...or is it suspended until W7 'wakes up' ?

2) Can W7 Auto Backup do 'incremental' BU's ? In normal default settings...will the weekly backups (Let Windows choose) simply over-write the former weeks backup ?
Any opinions on 'Let Windows Choose' and 'Let me choose' options ?

3) What's the difference/benefits or doing a normal Backup and 'Creat a System Image'
operation ?

Thanks much, Tim

A:New to 7 - a couple questions

Hi there,

1) In sleep mode, your anti virus will not be able to scan. However, it can scan if the computer is idle.

2) Yes, the weekly backups over-writes the previous back ups. In "Let windows choose" back up, places like Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures, etc are backed up.
So if you store your stuffs on these folders, then "Let Windows Choose" Backup is for you.

3) Normal back up will just create back ups of your files and folders from certain places. creating a system image will back up the entire C:\ Drive so that in case things go wrong, you can restore the entire C: Drive (which includes system files, programs, settings, personal files, etc).

Hope this helps,

I have a couple of games and other programs where my system exceeds all the requirements. The mouse takes forever to respond though. I have cleaned it too. The only part of my system that just meets the requirements is the video card. In one game it takes an average of 30 seconds to just detect a click. This is when the game isn't even running yet!! Can anyone help. Also, is it ok to use BIOS to password protect your computer? or will it cause problems??
~~~~~Solution: For some reason when I put on my new mouse, Windows added two new mice. I feel dumb for not doing this before, but I just took one off device manager. This solved A LOT more speed problems on my computer than I expected. ~~~~~
A:a couple of questions
It's quite possible that there are programs running in the background, which is taking up some of your resources, leading to this slowdown you are experiencing. Before playing the game, I would close down all other applications that are running, including those running in the background. Do this by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, which brings up your Close Program window. Leave Explorer, Systray, and Rnaapp running, but close the rest.
Yes you can set BIOS passwords, and they don't hamper performance at all. Just be sure that you remember what the password is, because it's a major hassle to recover a BIOS password protected machine, if the password is forgotten. This might not be too bad if you only password protect the BIOS, but it is disastrous if you password protect the bootup. All in all, unless you have other people around, and you don't want them using your system, then I wouldn't bother with it.
Hi all. I have a dell inspiron 600M laptop with win tv usb 2 device and a dell printer. Bellsouth dsl, limewire pro, jvc camcorder, mcafee security center, ad aware se plus, aol instant messenger, yahoo messenger. Nero burner.
so my question is will all this stuff work on vista home basic? will it work on all versions of vista?
I know I can get the setup program to scan to see which version of vista will work best for me, just wondering if all versions will work with this stuff.
Kinda hard to say toyotaman. You can run the Upgrade Advisor program and see what it says. You might check with the hardware manufacturer as well. Most of everything you listed should be ok.... however with older software/equipment can sometimes cause issues.
I have a few questions about multiple topics so I will just post them all here in the XP section.
1.When I start windows my computer thinks i have 4 removable disks plugged in. I cannot go into them. They say"please insert something into disk drive" So becuase of this, when i resintalled windows it installed onto drive I. Now i have so many problems just becuase windows is on I.
How do I make it so those 4 drives are not there and when I reinstall windows I know that windows will be on C?
Now is there any work around for reinstalling windows to get the drive letter changed? Right now its on I can i just change it to C?
2. If i reinstall windows I want to back up all my stuff. But when I back up does it get everything? What I want to back up is all my stuff in my documents and all my saved games from my video games.
Will the normal windows back up get that stuff?
I can't think of any more of my problems but Ill keep this updated!
A:A couple questions.
This can happen if you had any USB thumbdrives inserted at the time and any USB external drives.
Copy all documents and saved games you want to keep to one external storage device. Since you can do a reinstall, reformat I drive with Device Manager.Remove ALL USB devices and ALL CDs from slots. Insert Windows OS disk in CD drive and reboot for reinstall.
Couple questions.
I just built a new PC. Specs are:
Windows XP Professional 64 bit edition
4200+ Dual Core processor AM2 slot
2 gig cosair xms ram DDR2 (800) (dual channel sticks 2x1gig)
7600 GT OC Nvidia card
450Watt Power supply
I have two monitors running. One is wide screen with a max resolution of 1366x768 (an LCD TV)...the other is a standard CRT with 1600x1200.
My question is this. I have my processor over clocked slightly (running from 2.4 to 2.6 ghz with multiplier of 11)
Every now and then when I reboot my PC i get tiny little boxes all over my display or tiny little lines that completely scramble the screen.
Is this a video card issue or is it something happening because an unstable system from over clocking my processor? Or even yet, is it a possible ram issue? Or is it maybe a power supply issue (450watt)?
I disabled my dual support and every now and then it still happened. I would just continue to hit reset and it would work itself out.
Any ideas on what could be causing this problem?
ALSO: I am doing some gaming (playing a new MMO)...does Dual monitor mode drain some of the video cards power? I would like to maximize how smooth the game runs. Will disabling dual monitor support and unplugging my second monitor free up some power and speed up my games? Silly question, but I have no clue .
Thanks in advance for help on both questions.
Couple questions about this process:
I have the XP on drive c:, data files on drive d: and I'm looking to install Win7 on a new 1.5 TB drive. Would it be better to ghost the existing c: XP partition to the new drive, then install win7 and dual boot off the one drive or is it better to just go with the 2 separate drive setup? (actually 3 drives as I need the data drive to re-install programs stored on it). I like the ghost idea cause that ensures the safety of the XP data as it would be removed from the equation. But is removing the XP partition from the one dual boot drive later on going to pose any problems?
A:Couple questions about this process:
I'm no expert on dual booting, but yes, some people have complications in removing dual boot when both OS are on the same drive. They usually get it solved, but it can cause issues.
And I have always heard that if you dual boot, putting an OS on separate drives is preferable if possible.
I'll certainly defer to those with more expertise on that topic.
