Ive been wanting to get my old computer running for awhile. i took it in, to get checked, and the guy said that the hard drive was blown. He told me that i had to get the full quick restore disc set if i wanted to put a new hard drive in to get it working(he said it consisted of 2 discs, he explainted to me why but it went in 1 ear and out the other). Well i called and told them that i need a full quick restore disc set for the model number 5170. I got it in the mail today but there is only 1 disc . Is there really 2 quick restore discs or did that guy have no idea what he was talking about? Also can i just use the 1 quick restor disc to put in a new hard drive and get my comp running again?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, so I reinstalled last night using the Compaq QuickRestore CD that came with the machine (my computer was barely usable last night). For some reason, it seems to have just installed a bare-bones Wndows XP, instead of loading it with all the Compaq bundled software. This is fine, and not a big issue, but on the first few boots, the mouse/clicking was acting funny. Clicking on the Start button would hang for a long time, or double-clicking an icon on the desktop would yield no result. Eventually, it opened things. I rebooted, and then it seemed to work fine. I noticed on startup that there was a box called SysPrep that I'd never seen before, something about reseal, audit, and doing these things after I tested/installed the software. Does anyone know why I'm having these little issues?
I just changed my hard disk can i use the discs to install windows xp ?

I need to reload the XP Home OS using the Compaq Quick Recovery disks. Disk 1 starts the recovery, but shortly I get a message, "Error #1701, The DELETE ALL command failed to delete all partitions on the drive". If I select OK, it exits to a C prompt.
Anyone have an idea how to complete the Quick Recovery??
Error 1701 pertains to a fixed disk problem in other words your hard drive. This is usually a problem related to the hard disk(s) themselves; this may not mean that the hard disk is bad, but could mean incorrect cabling or another issue making it impossible to find the hard disk. The controller or interface to the hard disk could also be at fault. Have you installed a new hard drive lately? I have a Compaq Presario 8000Z that has crashed and I can't seem to restore.
I purchased on new set of recovery discs and still can't get it back up.
I used Fdisk to delete the partitions, and format the drive.
I ran the quick restore CD's and they seemed to go through their sequence OK.
However, during the XP set up, the thing crashed and I got a message that said a "problem has been detected and windows must shut down". Also the error message was: pfn.list.corrupt.
It the said to check for new hardware, etc. Then it was beginning to dump physicla memory. I have spent most of the weekend trying to get this thing going.
Could it be a physical issue with my hard drive?
Also, I am wondering if I didn't perform the Fdisc process correctly.
Can anyone give a good link to follow that takes me from the very beginning?
I am not sure what to do next.

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

Hi this is my first post so bare with me.
I have a compaq presario 2580us laptop first of all with a pentium 4 in it.
My question is this. My laptop has 3 fans in it and they all used to come on in the past. Only one(the biggest) has been working not sure how long it has just been the one either. My temps get up to around 127F. I am just just wondering if there is a way to check out why the other 2 fans are not working. If there is some setting that I could check that would be great. Any assistance would be so nice.
I did this on a machine at work 2 weeks ago. Check hp.com, do the auto detect thing, and update the bios. should solve the problem.
hope it helps.
I'm making some changes to a compaq presario 4660 (dinosaur) and it's running windows 98. I cannot get into bios. F2, F1, delete and Tab do not get me in. I searched on google and really didn't receive good results. Well it did say that F2 would get me in, but it does not. Seemed to me there was another way to get into bios?

i just did a fresh install on this compaq laptop w/ win2k pro and i lost several of the add on thingys that compaq added to the laptop.
ie. the volume and scroll options on the keyboard. i went to the compaq site and haven't found the documentation on what the name of the programs or drivers are called for these 2 options.
any help would be nice.
You should have gotten a Restore CD with your laptop. That is the OS and all specific drivers, apps and Compaq features that were on the system. Anytime you install a "fresh" OS, you will lose all that stuff. With Compaq, I think this is not all bad. If you bought the laptop with something other that Win2K, then you are most likely SOL and on your own.
I have a compaq presario. The bios are poop. Does anyone know if there is a way to update the bios with areal manufacturer? Or am I stuck with compaq's bios? It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!
You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.
When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.
Like working on a NEW Dell PC, almost NO Options, no Temp monitors nothing.. junk... its a DELL!
the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.
I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.
Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.
Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.
Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)
Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On

I am running Windows XP Pro on a HP Compaq Presario S3190UK desktop and since this evening I haven't been able to even get to the Windows Splash screen.
When I boot I am given the options of Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally and Recovery Mode (which doesn't respond). Whichever option I select it stalls and will not boot the files and when I boot in safe mode it stalls after about seven seconds.
I have the Operating CD which I have tried to boot from but upon boot up I get the message "Please insert the Restore Plus! CD" . I don't have this.
Is there any chance of me retrieving my data?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Maybe, maybe not. You'll need to check the SPECIFIC laptop replacement screen you're considering and see if it's a match.

I have a PIII 733mhz Compaq Presario 5900T that I need some help with.
1st thing is that my harddrive is broken and I am looking into getting a replacement for that, but my question is:
What kind of disks does this computer support?
I tried a 160gb samsung disk, but it hangs at compaq logo screen so I guess it's too big. (hoping to be able to change this through a bios update later)
2nd part is that when I found a matching disk, how will I restore bios on it? I have no restore cds left...and I suppose this computer stores a part of its bios on a hidden partition like all other compaqs.
The 384mb ram limit is fine with me since I am gonna run Linspire linux on it.
Anyone that can help? I tried Compaq support and got no help whatsoever.
My Father in Law has a Compaq Presario 5900T. His Hard drive crashed and I put a new 160G drive in it. When I try to restore the computer with the original Compaq restoration CD's it keeps rebooting without ever formatting, partitioning or anything else.
Can someone help? My FIL is bound and determined to continue using this machine. I believe he is afraid of change.
you need the old hard drive
the quick restore disks that come with compaq computers only work with certainpartition and hard drive sizes
to get the 160 gb hard drive to work, you will have to reformat the old hard drive and install everything on it
then copy the drive c partition over to the 160gb hard drive then use a partition program to increase the drive c to 160 gb
I was not sure just where this question should go so if this is not the right place please feel free to relocate it.
I have THIS desk-top:
Hewlett-Packard Compaq Presario CQ2723wPC
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD EI-1200 Accelerated Processor
Memory = 4GB/G(something I can't make out) DDR
HardDrive = 500GB/
I am running a PPS PE9 photo effects program that is only working about 50%
I have found the minimum requirements for running this particular program:
Open GL 2.0 capable video card with 256MB dedicated RAM
How do I find out what kind/size of video card, how much dedicated RAM, and available memory my unit has ?
If my unit is falling short in any of these requirements, is this something I can buy and is it within my abilities to make the necessary improvements ?
I am quite mechanically/electrically adept but I know little about the insides of a computer.
Thanks for reading.
The Compaq Presario CQ2723w Desktop PC(H2L89AA) comes with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit and comes with this hardware:
Pegatron APXD1-DM(Redwood A) motherboard
AMD E1-1200 APU 1.40 GHz dual core processor which has an average benchmark score of 682
4 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM
Intel Radeon HD 7310 graphics which has an average benchmark score of 171
Realtek ALC662 high definition audio
Atheros AR8152 10/100 Mbps ethernet
500 GB SATA hard drive
Super-multi DVD burner disc drive
65 watt power supply
If you wanted a desktop that's speedy and has plenty of hardware upgrade options, you couldn't have picked one much worse than this one.
Its motherboard has no expansion slot for adding a graphics card, so you're stick with its wimpy integrated graphics which uses up to 1961 MB of shared memory.
Its slow wimpy processor is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradeable to a faster one.
It has only 4 GB of RAM, but it supports 8 GB, so you do have the option of adding more.
I've searched this site, I've asked HP/Compaq, and I've checked search engines but still don't have an answer, so wondering if I can find it here.
I have a Compaq Presario 700 with what I believe is a dead hard drive. I want to replace it, but not sure if it is necessary to copy the files from the drive first. I don't think it's possible, as the drive doesn't seem to work at all. Can I replace it with a new (upgraded) hard drive and just run the original Windows QuickRestore discs, or is there something more to it that I would need?
Here's what happens: I switch the laptop on and it wants to start up, but then, before Windows is running, the hard drive begins it's lovely scraping and clunking noises and I eventually get a black screen with plain text saying windows had to shut down... and is beginning dump of physical memory. Of course, this all started after some fool (maybe me, maybe not) dropped the laptop.
Every site I've checked says I'll need to create a backup of all files before replacing the hard drive. I didn't have anything on there that I need to save, so am wondering if I can just run the QuickRestore and get back to business as usual.
Welcome to the TSG forum.
Which Compaq Laptop ???
Have you backed up all your personal Data ??
Yes .. just put in a new HD .. and run the recovery CD/DVDs
This'll put it back to the way you bought it .. assuming no other problems.
I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.
I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.
I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.
The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.
I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.
Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?

The manual doesn't say .. But I'd try the F10 key at Bootup.
You can also Email HP support and see if they know ...
... and If you can still get the recovery CDs ..
Does this computer have a sticker on the side .. or somewhere ....

Hello - I am attempting to get an old Compaq Presario 9546 that I obtained work correctly. I am, however, at a loss to figure out what the heck is wrong. When you boot the computer, it does the RAM check, and appears to skip past all BIOS functions (I can't go into BIOS setup... it does not exist) and then all it says is "Non system disk, please replace and press any key" - which, BTW, I have no disk in at all. When I DO put in a system floppy, it will boot from the floppy but not aqnowledge that anything else but the floppy is hooked up to the computer (I have 2 hard drives and a CD rom drive - all with the correct jumper settings). Any ideas? If I could just get BIOS to come up, I could probably fix it myself...
