Staarcraft is being possessed by an evil spirit

Q: Staarcraft is being possessed by an evil spirit

I've had craving to play Starcraft, I pop the CD into the PC and run the game.
Than something, that never happened before happens:
While the game runs as usual, from the left edge of the screen to the middle black lines and squares begin to appear, flickering, pissing the hell out of me. I can't really play the game, because half of the screen is being assaulted by black lines that flicker and jump up and down.
Attempted to reinstall the game, but no dice, same issue.

As a note, I did not make any software nor hardware changes since the last time I played the game.

Any advice?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had this creepy problem for quite a while now
but for the past few days everything seemed okay
so I've been ignoring/procrastinating until now,
and now...I'm in desperate need of your help.
The computer has become nearly inoperable because of it.
Just now, I've had serious trouble registering here
and it's all because the computer screen started to bounce up and
down and sideways like mad, anywhere there's a scroll bar,
and whenever it does that, nothing is readable and nothing is clickable.
I think a similar problem was discussed in two other previous posts:

here & here
but I've tried all the advice and nothing seemed to work
so...here is my hijackthis logfile.
Please tell me what's going on.
thank you.

Hi,

Has anyone got any experience of this old, (1999), driving game by Microprose/Hasbro?.

We had it working well once and uninstalled it. When reinstalled it will go through the intro sequence and then crash back to the Desktop. The uninstall was done via Norton Cleansweep and we used Reg Cleaner to get rid of any leftovers.

This is an old computer with AMD K62 450Mhz, 128MB and 13 GB HDD with lots of room. Sound and graphics are onboard and 8MB of memory is assigned to graphics. This specification may be at the lowest limit for this game but it did work OK previously.

Lots of stuff has been updated or installed/uninstalled since the last time this game ran successfully so I can't put this comp back into the state it was in at that time. One thing that hasn't been changed (as far as I know) is sound or graphics drivers.

I run up to date AV and anti trojan and use a firewall and anti spyware program so any settings that have changed will be the result of other program installs/uninstalls.

A:Spirit of Speed 1937

Forgot to mention that we have Win 98, Direct X 8.1 and IE 5.5 SP2, if that matters.

I have tried the general troubleshooting hints from the Microprose (now Infogrames) website, such as lowering hardware acceleration and turning off all other running programs, but they didn't help.

Unfortunately, the site has no specific help for this game, which suggests to me that any support was discontinued before the original authors of the game were acquired by or merged into Infogrames.

We bought this game for very little money so, as my end qoute suggests, 'it doesn't matter very much' its just annoying that it did work once and doesn't now!.

Does anybody have any experience or knowledge of this old (1999) Microprose/Broadsword motor racing game?

Our computer spec is adequate and we have had it running fine before but, since we uninstalled and then reinstalled it, it won't run past the introductory sequence but reverts back to the Desktop.

I have used jv16 to get rid of any left over Registry stuff and can't think what else to try. The support website, unsurprisingly, no longer works.

Never even heard of the game....but are you running Windows XP? If so, have you tried running it in compatability mode?

Here's the bottom line: I have an HP PAVILION 505n and use XP. The past few months, my speed to move from one site to another, or even to fill our forms on certain websites, has gotten slower and SLOWER and S-L-O-W-E-R. I've already defraged and stopped certain programs from opening up and done my anti-virus and antispyware....you name it, NOTHING helps.

SO.....my brilliant son who lives far far away tells me that he's sure I need to reload my windows. But he says this: You lose every setting you have, you have to reset everything, reinstall everything from scratch, reenter usernames and passwords, back up all your critical data and files (and i know you have no idea where most of this stuff is located so you'd likely lose a lot if you weren't careful). This isn't a decision someone like you can take lightly.

Oh gee. I'm thrilled.

SOOOO, can I really do this on my own?? IS THERE A STEP-BY-STEP instruction page somewhere, just as step-by-step as a recipe for a great dish?? Or am I doomed here?

Hi.

We have a PC at work that is acting up.
It is automatically entering a slash followed by Enter every few minutes.
This is not a program-specific problem - it occurs in both MS Office apps and in the networked software used on that machine. This happens repeatedly and for no apparent reason.
The user came back from her lunch to a screen full of:

[last text entered]/
/
/
/
/
/

This has only started occurring today. I'm trying an alternative keyboard to see if that makes any difference.

If it's not the keyboard, any ideas?

A:Possessed PC?

My first thought is the keyboard or the keyboard drivers, don't elimate the drivers or forget about them. They could be just as much at fault as a keyboard.

Then the computer started reseting on its own at different operations. It seemed totally random. Reformatted hard drive and left all non essential equipment unhooked. Still the same problem only now the memory dumps went away and I sometimes get blue screen of death. A few days went by and now the Computer restarts itself like it did before and sometime the computer will act like its restarting only nothing will come up, even the motherboard turn on screen. The strange thing is, all the drives light up and the motherboard power light is lit up. The monitor never gets a signal to turn on either. The computer will stay like this until I leave it off for about five minutes and then powers up normally. I have a feeling its the CPU but I'm not the experts you guys are. I did re seat and check all wiring. Any help?

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Brief: I currently have a cable DSL, RCA router (with a generic IP address, no?) and Norton anti virus. I have recently scanned for viruses, installed all current patches of IE and Windows and still my IE is possessed by smut (gambling, porn, warning your computer can be tracked protection software ads, etc, etc).

Problems:
1. IE will open on its own onto my screen
2. Sites will commandeer my default site
3. Sites will insert themselves onto my favorites list (deleting them only makes room for new ones).

What?s going on? I thought I was protected. Do I have some back door open; wrong setting somewhere, accidentally installed something I shouldn?t have?

*note if I go to Network connections there is an item there which I don?t recognize. It just says: 1394 Connection enabled. I look under properties and am still unsure about. I?d delete/uninstall it but I don?t know if it?s good (necessary to the router) or bad (some Trojan horse), or neither.

BTW: I got an email to introduce myself. I?m currently a grad student, former military and the proud owner of a boxer (just a great dog). I also feel like one of the employees in that SNL skit ?Nick Burns, your company computer guy? when it comes to computers, but I?m willing to learn.

This is my second thread and on the first one I was over whelmed at the number of responses. You all are great very helpful? so a heartfelt thanks to all.

A:IE possessed!

Well it sounds like you have some spyware on your system. Download adaware and spybot to look for other stuff. This should get rid of all those popups and stuff.

My computer has been running slow for a while but now I have problems I can't deal with by simply waiting.

When online it will scroll the page (mostly up) all on it's own.

Again, when online my browser will go back one page (as if I hit the left arrow in the tool bar) again all on it's own.

the mouse (optical) will be slow to respond in moving the cursor no matter how much I slide it across the pad. Sometimes it will lock up completely and I have to restart my computer.

No matter how many times I scan with trendmicro or Bitdefender it will find maleware/grayware making me wonder if it is removing a piece of the problem but not the root program that is causing my headaches

The last scan I did with Bitdefender had removed a few problems but told me my comp was still infected.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated

Help! I am having major problems this last week in that my laptop won't connect to the internet without directing me to alternative ad sites or preventing me from updating malware software like spybot etc. It will not allow me to open any website to do with malware removal and every program i have attempted to install via usb stick etc just crashes.
A generic host process win 32 error appears everytime I log in and both firefox and ie8 redirect to different ad sites when entering any web address. My dvd drive is making crazy noises and often won't read a disc. Zonealarm wouldn't be allowed to update and it was uninstalled and replace with the latest norton security suite but again nothing was detected on scanning. Spybot still won't work and neither will malwarebytes. i have attempted system restore but it won't allow it. I dont have the factory install disc from lenovo. I don't really want to lose all my data but I am guessing that may be my only option with a fresh install of xp after a disc reformat but I'm hoping to be wrong??!! Please help if you can.

Hello bobsalvador,

We can take care of this rootkit, but it will require more than one round. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear', even if symptoms abate.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible.
Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it?s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security SuiteInstall ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand... Read more

When I log on to the computer usually I do some surfing or read this forum before logging onto MSN Instant Messenger. I have not logged onto Messenger yet, remember this. The first time it happened I nearly jumped out of my skin and I still do when it happens, because it happens all the time. I will be surfing or reading and all of a sudden I will get a message from someone. It baffles me to no end, because I know I am not logged on. I have not clicked on Messenger to log on. No Messenger little blue man icon on taskbar, no box with the names of people online or my status. No nothing.. just a message sent to me by someone that is seeing me online and I'm not suppose to be logged on. Apparently I'm thinking that my Messenger has associated itself with IE or something and is logging me on someway without my knowledge. Does this happen to anyone else?

Some have said that Outlook Express causes this same thing to happen but I don't use OE. I have tried to delete it and I can't. Is there anyway to stop Messenger from logging me on automatically like this when I start IE? Thanks.

I am having problems with my computer and hope someone might have a fix. First of all, when I try downloading anything new, it will not allow me to stating I do not have the authority to do so. I have gone into the security and enabled everything as well as set the security on low and I still am unable to download anything. Secondly, when I go to any website such as google or wellsfargo, the computer does not allow me to click into the serch engine or log in sections, in turn once I get to the site, I can't do a thing. Has anyone else had this problem? I have a Dell Demension 2300 so it is a few years old. Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

I just installed XP onto a Compaq Presario 5660 in the office I work at. Yes, it's a Compaq, I know, don't kill me.....

Anyway, I have not witnessed this myself, but we installed XP and now it seems that the computer will automatically turn on a short while after it is turned off. I'm told it turned on three times last night. I had it off today and worked on other projects for about 15 minutes to see if it would happen again, but it did not.

I don't know if you might think this is s a hoax or not, I assure you it isn't. The only explanation I have is that maybe there were some power surges last night (I'm at a camp in the middle of wilderness and power surges are not uncommon), but three all within 5 to 10 minutes of each other? The odds are unlikely.

Has this ever occurred to anyone? Is there maybe a setting that can be changed in XP? It's odd, and frankly I feel a little silly asking this, I feel as though I should consult Dogbert to ward off the computer demons or something.

But seriously, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Zach

A:Possessed Computer???

You might want to try accessing the BIOS (I think it's F10 on startup for most Compaq's) and see what "Wake On..." options there are.

I have developed an extremely annoying glitch with my keyboard,

All 3 lights, num, cap and shift lock will randomly flash, sometimes not for 5 minutes, sometimes around every 30 seconds.

When this happens, I either need to re-type a key, or the key will hold giving me something that loooooooookkkkkkkkkssssss liiiiikkkkkkeeeee thhhhhhiiiiiissssss.

It may be coinciding with some activity like when a browser is blocking a pop up or something.

I have recently installed windows 7. The manufacturer claims that it needs no new driver with it and that windows automatically installs the driver for it.

The problem didn't appear until about a month after the install of windows 7. There was no problem with the keyboard and XP Pro however.

This is a desktop system, with the keyboard plugged into the usb.

It is also affecting my game playing by holding keys, but not nearly as often when i play pc games as when typing.

Sometimes I get a break from the glitch by pressing the num lock key, but after a while it reverts to the random flashing and key holding again.

Thanks in advance.

The CD-RW drive in my wife's PC has(had) a mind of its own. The drawer would open part way, then sit. Sometimes it would open all of the way. Sometimes...you get the idea. This would happen randomly. There is a green light that shows activity, and a red light that - well - I don't know what its for. Whenever the red light would come on, the computer would slow down terribly, or freeze up all together. I told my wife to go in and disable the drive - which see did. The drive now does not show up under "My Computer" anymore. I assumed this is the way its supposed to be.

After all of that, here is my question. Even with this demon drive disabled, from time to time, the red light will still come on and freeze things up. Is there something else we can do, or should we call Father Karras?

Thanks,
Michael

Hello,
just recently my XP machine seems to be possessed! The menus and web pages are jumping around on their own, can't figure out why this is happening. Everytime I open a web page, open a explorer window, or even try and use the run menu, the menus, scroll and drop downs just jump back and forth between choices, it is even happening when I open outlook and try and read emails, I can't because it keeps scrolling randomly back and forth. it is even happening when I open any and all programs, like when I open wmp or winamp, it just jumps around like someone is playing with everything! Do I have some weird virus, or did I perhaps disable something and not know it? I have been a tech for years, and I am stumped on this one, and it's my own machine!

Thanks!

I am slipping further behind and will have to reformatted this weekend if I cannot resolver this. This is a very last resort however and I am hoping for a fix instead...... You have my sincere gratitude for any help you can offer.

My symptoms are a very slow computer at times. I have perused your forum and tried several things to no avail. running malware bytes etc. The problem seems worst after the computer has been sitting for a while. It will then be accessing the harddrives endlessly and I have all I can do to get in a reboot. Right now the computer is running well after a fresh boot with little activity accessing the drives........

I have a V2 Premier computer that is possessed! My computer re-boots every time I try and run my antivirus software, disk defrag, and when I try to download Microsoft updates. I also get this blue screen that displays a message that goes so fast I can't read what is says. I think it says if you get a message like this.... Also every time it re-boots it runs disk checker. After it re-boots, I get this small window on the desktop that says Windows Installer. I checked the Add/Remove to remove Windows Installer but its not even listed. I'm at my wits end. I'm ready to toss this computer out of the window! Tech support is a joke! They told me I should remove everything from my computer in BIOS and start from the beginning but I don't know how and I'm afraid I will do more damage than good. Can someone please help? Thank you.

PC Info.
V2 Premier computer Processor Speed: 3.2GHz
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition
