computer only starts in safe mode after updates

Q: computer only starts in safe mode after updates

I've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode.

When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that
there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode.

I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus (I got a similar screen when my own computer had a virus a few years ago). I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: computer only starts in safe mode after updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry my first post is asking for help.

I have an ASUS laptop, yesterday i left it alone for a few hours and i came back to a message saying "reselect boot device" i was able to get past that, im not sure how but i did. Now today if i try to run my laptop in regular start up it freezes about 5 minutes later and then goes to blue screen. I can run my laptop in safe mode and safe mode with networking fine. I do not have any restore points (wasnt aware that windows 7 didnt automatically create restore points) so i cant restore back to a previous version.

I can get a boot log and a cbs log if that will help.

I dont know if its a hardware problem (i dropped my laptop two days ago about a foot and a half and it landed flat, no dents or anything. it worked fine after that) or if its a virus problem. I recently downloaded a new album (same day i dropped my laptop) but it worked fine after that as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer only starts in safe mode

1) Nothing to be sorry about - this is a support forum - your first post is supposed be a request for help.2) W7 DOES create restore points automatically, just like every other Windows version.3) I've never heard of that message before ("reselect boot device"). You saw that within the Windows environment?4) Download BlueScreenView:http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.htmlunzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select AllGo to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txtOpen BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Really not sure where this needs to be posted and its a little long winded but i need to give as much background as possible.
I have posted this on other sites and since this is the place where I had a previous mystery problem solved I thought I test it out on you guys again. Here goes:

I originally posted a thread in a forum on a site called pcpitstop
(original: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.ph...-in-safe-mode/ )
But I havn't exactly had a big response. I do appreciate the one I have had but dont think it was in the right direction.
I am hoping you guys are going to do better.
Here is a run down of my major problem :
Computer will only start in safe mode and I dont know what to do . I did see a topic on here : http://forums.pcpits...de/page__st__10
and a guy called IntelGuy solved it. I have started to try to follow some of the steps he suggested but some of the links are out of date. I'm not really tech savy and although a little bit of a tomboy, this tech stuff is way above me.
I have an
RM D945GTP_
and im running XP home edition on it.
from what ive read there is a strong posibility it may be a dirver problem and in fact thats is how IntelGuy solved the one shown. However i dont know how to find out whats drivers i need for my specific computer.
What are my first steps? Please help me, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

I am running Windows XP. I thought I may have had a virus so I ran multiple scans (Symantic, Adaware, Trendmicro housecall, malawarebytes). Some files where quarantined. When i restarted my computer it would not boot up. It will only load up windows XP in safe mode. When trying to boot up not in safe mode the window XP logo shows on the screen then the screen goes black and stays black.

I am not sure if this should be a post on the HijackThis forum or not. Thanks for your help.

(oh no what have I done?? ) I unplugged my dsl modem due to problems I was having connecting. When that didn't solve my problem, brilliant me, thought I'd re-install it. So I uninstalled my modem and now I can't get my computer to work at all. It starts up in Safe Mode.... I put the disk in to reinstall and it says I'm not attached to the CD player???? Alternately when it starts up I get a black screen that just says "Windows Protection fault, must re start computer....

(I've tried starting the computer with the modem totally unplugged too, just to see if I could at least get into my computer - with no luck, either.)

I have an HP Pavilion, windows 98se. modem is slipstream 5100 ethernet. (sbc is provider)

In worst case scenario, is there a way I can save files when I am in safe mode (being that I can't seem to connect to my cd player this is freaking me out......)

Hi, try System Restore from safe mode.
Start > Run > Type.
msconfig

Click Launch System Restore.
Choose a date prior to the problem.
======
If that does not work.
In msconfig - under the Start Up Tab.
Untick all entries Except your Anti-Virus program.

Apply > Ok > Reboot your Pc.

The System Configuration Utility box appear on retstart - saying changes have been made.
Tick the box on the lower left and then OK.
Make no other changes while in msconfig.

What is the model number of your Acer Netbook?

I am running Windows XP on an 8 year old Gateway computer, and it will only start in safe mode.
This happened after I updated my hardware drivers...I got a fatal system error box,and system restore doesn't work. When I try to use the Gateway Restore discs, they won't play because my D drive isn't recognized. Should I just scrap everything and get a new HD since I haven't had any luck with reinstalling,or is there a way for a computer idiot to reinstall Windows XP without a disc? I never got one, this was my roommate's old PC.Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I couldn't find related threads.

Hello, I am a computer novice with a major problem. I have a Dell Inspiron with a Windows 7 OS. About a month ago my computer started having problems. It now only starts in Safe Mode, and when I shut it down and try to start it in Normal Mode, it stays on the "Welcome" screen, then goes black. I have to turn it off and restart in Safe Mode. I tried System Restore, but it said there are no Restore Points. What can I do? I really don't want to reinstall Windows.

A:[SOLVED] Computer only starts in Safe Mode

First you should back up your data. Copy important files to an external hard drive or a USB drive.

Second you should start your computer in safe mode, type cmd at the start menu, and right click cmd and press run as administrator. Then type sfc/ scannow

Let it run and report what it said after it was finished.

Hello, I'm back.

On Friday night, I was playing Farmville 2 on Zynga.com when my computer crashed. When I restarted it, I got vertical lines on the screen, and my computer would not boot. I tried to start it in safe mode and it does start up.

I am guessing that my graphics card has probably gone. I do have anti-virus installed and have got Avast! free edition.

I am having to use my laptop, but it is awkward because I bought my laptop in 2006 and is slow for some things.

Can anyone help? I'm thinking of uninstalling the driver for my graphics card if it'll let me in safe mode and trying to reboot again. I don't know what to do and my dad says try a windows repair. My dad is a qualified computer technician and is not sure himself.

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

I am having an issue where my computer will start fine in normal mode, but if I try to go into safe mode, it goes into startup repair mode.

Windows 7 Home 64bit, Lenovo desktop. Webroot Secureanywhere.

Contacted my VPN provider regarding this, they questioned where that IP address was coming from because it was not theirs. The IP address is this message would sometimes change, but according to WHOIS all were registred to:

I have no idea personally who this is. Ran the widely accepted malware scanners (Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Rkill, Adwcleaner, Combofix "feel free to scold me...", and I think some rootkit scanners) found Somoto PUP, which I seem to have removed. OPENVPN ceased giving me the "system tried to join a drive" messages.

As always, I recommend running a full scan with your installed antivirus suite. Then run a second or third on-demand scanner like Malwarebyes, Hitman Pro, Windows Offline Defender, etc just in case your installed suite missed something.

If this problem just began with a couple of days ago you could try using a restore point to return your computer to a date/time prior to the problem starting.

System Restore

You could also try doing a clean startup (AKA clean boot) to troubleshoot apps and services that may be causing the issue.

I've made loads of searches and carried out countless potential solutions for this and I'm still not much further forwards.
I would just do a system update from a disc to put all my drivers and operating sytem stuff back in place however it won't allow me as the explorer.exe problem locks the system so nothing will start up or run.
Going into Safe mode is still much the same. I can at least browse and find the contents of the hard drive but can't run any programme or install any other software to troubleshoot the problem.
I've tried all the usual, ie system restore etc and even copied some backup opertaing files from a command prompt before the system starts up which did give me some speed gain at startup but it hasn't resolved the main problem.
Most solutions seem to suggest doing something that involves an operating system that actually starts and allows things to run.
Mine doesn't allow anything, or at least nowhere near enough although some few things ... Read more

A:Nothing starts: Safe Mode can't help me

Please run the first 3 free diagnostics listed here: Hardware Diags
They are bootable, so that will be easier than trying to do anything in Windows.
Please start with the bootable antivirus stuff, as that's what this description reminds me of.

You can install another copy of Win7 on another drive.
First, make sure you scan for viruses.
Then be careful that you don't overwrite anything that you want to save from the old installation.

I'm not familiar with the Inland Revenue stuff, but most programs have data files to store the data. So you can install another copy of the Inland Revenue program and then use the data file from the old program. I'd suggest posting for help in the General forums for assistance with the Inland Revenue program.

I have an old Windows XP that I am letting the kids use for school and such. It suddenly started having an issue. It would start up but as it got to the Windows page with the bar running on it, it would then go to the "Windows Failed to start properly" page. It would then continue to do this until I changed it to safe mode.

At first I thought it was a virus. I have ran 3 antivirus scans (McAfee, Kaspersky, and Avast!) and found nothing. I attempted to run Windows Update but was getting a message that it could not be run. I tried using the Windows Fix-It but was getting a message that I needed Service pack 3 and .Net Framework 2.0 or above. I looked at my computer and it said it had Service pack 3. I looked in the add/remove programs and it shows SP3 but there is no way to modify it or remove it, would this mean it isn't really there? I attempted to install .Net Framework 2.0 but it would fail to download and the error message is saying it could not be opened.

I have run memory checks and scans of the system and am still not able to find what is wrong with it. I accidently did a system recovery and this did help for a short time but then when I tried updating windows it was right back to its same issues.

My computer is a HP Pavilion g1210n Media Center
Windows XP
AMD Athlon 64
3500+
2.19 GHz. 960 MB RAM

I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Help is appreciated!Issue: starup bumps me into safe mode without networking.History: June 18 I was infected by XP Security 2012 and it spread into losing the startup functionAlready tried:1. System restore in the safe mode command will not allow me to restore to a healthy date either by safe mode option.2. Did successfully reach System Restore as an optional choice while entering safe mode. Restore points were limited to June 17 and it is not effective in solving the problem.3. Ran Kaspersky Pure TrialScan and it seemed to quarantine the XP Security 2012 pop ups but the start up issue remains.4. Ran Fixit Utilities 11 and passed their scans.5. Installed Autorun.exe and see the detail but it is confusing to apply toward solving the problem. Many thanks for any help.Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Last night I turned my computer on and it follows the Dell screen through to the Windows XP screen, but then goes black and doesnt do anything.

I have tried starting in Safe mode which works fine, and running every diagnostic that I know but it says everything to do with the memory, the hard drive, the processor and everything else are all fine and there are no issues!

I really dont know what to do next as it may not be worth paying for a guy to fix it if I have to buy a new one at the end of it!!

Can anyone help me at all????? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Greetings,
I browsed through other posts with this topic, but did not find anything similar to my issues.

Running XP Pro SP3

This morning I sat down at my computer, moved the mouse to wake up the monitor, and PC shut down without warning. It will only start in regular "Safe Mode". On all other "Safe Modes" it gets to where the windows XP Logo is and the bar that shows movement, and then turns off without warning. It will not even go to last known good configuration.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

I had a hacker attach to my laptop running Windows 98, I.E. &.01 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2 (I saw the MCAfee Firewall window saying I was under a SYN port scan from an IP address). I had my Firefox browser opened at that time, and I saw mouse pointer closing the browser.
SO I decided to shutdown immediately my machine.
When I restart, the only way to start my Windows 98 is in safe mode: See HiJackThis log here below.
Is there anybody who can help me fix this?
Thanks a lot in advance

Welcome to TSF.

Let's try getting you out of safe mode first and then see if you have any trojans that may exist in your system.

Have you tried restarting and hitting the F8 (or in some systems F5) key repeatedly until a menu shows up and then choose Normal Mode?

Gateway computer with Windows Vista. Only starts in safe mode (manually by F8). I've tried System Restore from midnight this morning (windows updated at 3am afterwards so I picked the one prior) and I've tried to let it attempt to fix itself with no luck. Gets to the Microsoft inc screen with the green sliding bar in the middle, that goes away and then just a blank screen until I do a cold restart, repeat.
This has happened before when the power went out in my house. Had a computer guy come to my house and he fixed. He said I should be able to fix on my own if it happens again and gave me the command to fix it. Of course I lost that receipt with it on it. He did say my computer was loaded with errors and corruption and that I should backup my files asap BC it was only matter of time before computer is done for.
Any help please?

Hi everone,
I will be working on a computer for someone at work i have not got it yet im trying to get a start on the problem. Its an H.P and it will only start in safe mode. It will not boot into windows at start up. He has not installed or uninstalled any hardware or software. Im thinking its a problem with a corrupt driver thats not allowing it to start. I was going to start by using the xp repair function and if that does not work do a complete install which im trying to avoid.
Can anyone give me some ideas so when i do start it will be easier going.

Thanks for the help

If I start my laptop normally, it will go as far as the desktop, then hang. The hard drive runs, and runs, I don't know how long as I've just turned the laptop off after 30 minutes. The hard drive light does not flicker, it is just solid.
In safe mode, everything is large and sort of fuzzy--as you can tell, I don't know what is pertinent for you to know???
The Windows Help and Support screen in safe mode suggested doing a System Restore, so I tried but the screen never changed from "Initiating System Restore".
I don't know what to try next and would appreciate help from any of you!
Thanks.

First of all, hi everybody !
And thanks in advance for the help you'll give me for handling my problem !

I've used to put windows in safe mode to check the background of windows for problems. I'm no expert. But i think windows has its problems and the antiviruses also...

So last weekend, i've put windows in safe mode to do my checkup with ad aware and panda antivirus...

I think i also did ngt register checkup... and another one to speed up and 'repair' the registry

Then my computer didn't want to get out of safe mode...

As i've tried and tried again to put it back to normal, i finally was able to bypass something and i'm now in diagnostic mode but i'm not sure...

But in safe mode we can't use internet and now i can...

But when i boot up, the parameters for the screen are different and i have to adjust it everytime i boot the computer.

So i don't know if it's a virus or if it's really me who really messed up with my computer...

If it's a virus, we'll find a way to erase it.

If it's me who messed up... Well i think i'll have to change some line in the registry for the boot up of the system... But how and witch line that's the problem...

And i promise i won't do the same mistake again !
I'll do some others but not the same one !!!

Merci beaucoup !
Thank you very much !

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Since you can get into Safe Mode, run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

My computer has been starting in fail safe mode. I have to hit F1 for it to continue to boot up. I'm thinking there is a simple fix. But what might that fix be?

Any more details you can give? Does it say anything else on the screen?

Whenever I have seen computers say anything about pressing F1 to continue the boot process, it was a bios message alerting me that the system time was off (cmos battery was dead).

I have a similar problem to another one that was posted here but since the other post was resolved, I'm not getting many responses and I would GREATLY appreciate some help.

I tried everything I know and have read. My computer (desktop, XP, SP3, AMD Athlon(tm) 64x2 Dual Core Proc, 3800+, 2.01 GHz, 448MB RAM) will not stay on. I can power it on in SafeMode (with or w/o networking) but nothing else, not even Last Known Good Configuration. If I try, it sometimes powers ON and gets as far as the Windows Logo but before fully loading, it powers OFF. I have tried the following - 1) opening it up and blowing all dust out, 2) System Restore, 3) uninstalling & reinstalling Device Driver (NVIDIA geForce), Error Checking and following all steps for startup initialization files or services problems. None of these have helped. I recently did a spyware scan, a disk scan and a defrag.

UPDATE: After numerous attempts, I am sometimes able to get into regular mode but it only stays on for 5 minutes. Any explanation for that? It is not overheating. I have the two side panels off, it is dust free and it is cool.

SECOND UPDATE: Someone said to run Error Checking again so I did but it obviously doesn't start until you reboot but now when I boot in Safe Mode it freezes at: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers/Mup.sys

Now I'm stuck again. Now I can only start in SafeMode when I tap the ENTER key a dozen times at the freezing point (mentioned above) bu... Read more
