Lenovo L440 - problem with HDD caddy

Q: Lenovo L440 - problem with HDD caddy

Hi,I have replaced CD-ROM by HDD Caddy with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 250GB) in my Lenovo ThinkPad L440 (20ASS3GT0) as a second storage device (not one with the OS). When I'm trying to start the system, I'm getting a message "Configuration changes - restart the system." and the system reboots again and again. What is more, I can't access the BIOS any more - pressing F1 does not work. Updating to the newest version of BIOS (1.85) does not help. After removing HDD Caddy everything works fine. I have tried some of the configurations below: Removed the battery, pressed the power button for 10-15 sec. and rebooted with AC Adapter connected - still got message "Configuration changes - restart the system."Removed HDD from standard SATA port and connected it using HDD Caddy - cannot boot into the system. There is no message "Configuration changes...", HDD is detected but it is not on the list with bootable devices (there is only one option to boot over the LAN).HDD Caddy connected with no storage device - boot into the system with no problem. The problem is, that I need two storage devices - one for the OS and second one (using HDD caddy) for another data. Could anyone help me to solve that issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi dear Lenovo community, I've been having a problem regarding an Universal HDD caddy after deciding I want to make my Z50-75 faster. I bought a Kingston 240GB SSD (don't think the brand is needed) to put instead of the SSHD I previously had. So I made a fresh install on the SSD and mount it in the main drive location, I took out the optical drive and replaced it with the HDD caddy with the 1TB sata inside. All good so far, but when the notebook starts the second drive is not recognised - I also tried using the SSD in the caddy without any results Bios recognises the HDD, but the driver appears as Unkown in Device Manager. I have made a fresh install using UEFI boot mode only, before I was running Windows 10 64-bit with Legacy boot. I have to mention that I've tried several fixes:1. Tried to change the switch on the caddy2. Bios update to the latest version3. Started everything as fresh install4. Switch places betwwen the HDD and SSD5. I have tried to access the Disk Management with the caddy inside, but the Virtual Disk Service  is not connecting6. The Diskpart command or any partition manager software (I am using EaseUp) is not loading The model that I own is Z50-75 with the AMD A10-7300 Radeon R6, 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD running Windows 10 64-bit version. I have attach pictures with the relevant information and the HDD caddy itself. Thanks in advance Disk ManagementDevice ManagerUniversal HDD Caddy

It would be helpful to know what you are calling a "caddy" and how it is connected to the notebook, and what OS you have installed.

Hello dear Lenovo community, I've been having a problem regarding an HDD caddy for about two months now. After deciding I wanted to make my G510 a little bit faster, I bought a Kingston 240GB SSD (don't think the brand is needed) to put instead of the SSHD I previously had. Of course 240 GB is not that much. I only wanted it for the Windows partition. So, I also bought an HDD caddy to put it instead of the ODD (Optical Disk Drive). So far so good. Everything came and I made the swap. The SSD inside the original place of my SSHD and then I removed the ODD to put the HDD caddy with the SSHD in it. The problem is, it is not recognized when booting. The laptop just hangs/freezes at the Lenovo logo. I tried to switch places (SSHD in its original place and SSD in HDD caddy) and to my suprise, both of the drives were recognized, but I could not format my SSD and access it whatsoever. I discovered a workaround where I put the ODD tray back in, start Windows from the SSD, then while booted and loaded, I take the ODD tray out and insert the HDD caddy with the SSHD. Then, Intel Rapid Storage recognizes it and my drives are correctly shown. The problem is when I shutdown the laptop and turn it back on, I go back to my first problem, which is freezing Lenovo logo. The only way I can work with this, is if I just restart or put the laptop in Stand by. Even when I put it in Stand-by, sometimes the SSHD gets disconnected and I have to do the ODD tray thing again. Hi Ms,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understand that your display is not working in your L440 laptop.

Issue might be with the LCD cable. Since the external display is working fine there is no issue with the motherboard.

Note: As per the Lenovo policy, the warranty will be void if the laptop is dismantled by yourself.

We would like you to visit the nearest authorised Lenovo service centre to purchase the power supply.

Hello. I have Lenovo L440 laptop. As I remember BIOS is Phoenix. When I turn on my laptop, it makes 1-3-3-1 (1 signal, pause, 3 signals, pause, 3 signals, pause, 1 signal). I could find in Internet what those signals mean. I could find only 1-3-3. Tell me please, what is wrong with my laptop? Thank you.

A:Lenovo L440 makes 8 signals (1-3-3-1)

Hello and welcome,

From the (English) Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad L440, L540

One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, threemore short beeps, pause, and one short beep

Shut down the computer immediately. Ensure thatmemory modules are installed correctly. If they are, andyou still hear the beeps, have the computer serviced.

That would seem to indicate memory issues.

Hi, I started having weird after-wake up BSODs (bugcheck: 0x00000133) last week. I don't recall installing or udpating any software (other than Windows update) nor changing hardware configuration.
The BSODs are not regular and don't happen after every wake up, just circa every second third. It seems that they're slightly more likely to happen more times in a row but other than that there doesn't seem to be any way to predict them. Once a BSOD happened during normal use and not immediately after wake up (was about 2 mins after wake up).
The exact way they occur is following: Laptop gets waken up, is normally responsive for about 1-4 seconds, freezes, and after variying amount of time (sometimes seconds, sometimes minutes) fall into BSOD.
Event viewer (system logs) doesn't show anything with the exception of some printer-related problems that have - however -timespamp indicating that they-re after-crash problems. There're no System logs with timestamp in between wake up and crash and the after-reboot ones doesn't provide any useful information.
The laptop runs Windows 8.1 x64 with Ubuntu in dualboot which seems to be unaffected (can't say for sure, don't use it as much).

Hello. I am going to buy Lenovo 320-15IKB with no optical drive. Also I would like to change the standart HDD for SSD and use this HDD as a second hard drive. Therefore, I would like to ask if i may add the HDD using caddy adapter even if there is no optical drive in the model. There is no problem with opening laptop, but i would like to ensure that the space of DVD is empty and could be used. In the second place, I am not sure if there are all cable connections in there. I mean if there is a SATA connector which corresponds to DVD drive in other models. Another possible problem is the way to fix caddy to the motherboard. Normally it can be fixed by a metal part and a screw form the optical drive. But by not having dvd rom, would it be possible? In the case of having the hole, where may I get the metal part and the screws needed? And finally, would it fit using a standart 9.0 mm caddy? Or the only option is to use my HDD as an external hard? Thanks in advance PS. And another little question about RAM-memory. Would those models work well in it? Are they compatible? Hello,i have problems with my Lenovo B50-80, running Windows 10.Before this Laptop, i had a HP with a SSD. I replaced the 1000 GB HDD from the Lenovo against the SSD.Next step was to replace the ODD against a HDD Caddy with the 1000 GB HDD.The Problem is, that the HDD is not running. The HDD is visible in Disk Management, but i cant initialize it. It also shows up as "unknown".If i try to initialize it as GPT, a warning shows up, that say that the size of the Disk is to small for GPT. Initializing with MBR there comes warning that System cant find data. Dont know what that means.I thought maybe the HDD is destroyed ore something like that. So i tried it with my tower PC directly connectet via SATA and it worked fine. I also formated the disk with the Tower. Then i tried again with the HDD Caddy and the Laptop but it did not work.In Device Manager it shows up and says, the disk is running without Problems. In Disk Part, the HDD sometimes shows up (with 0 Mb) and sometimes not (which is strange...)In Testdisk, i cant see the HDD. Does anybody know where this problem comes from?Maybe it has something to do with energy savings? Like switching of the ODD when not used? I tried the whole day, but did not find a solution or wokaround. (sorry for bad english)

Hi.I am looking for a caddy to replace the DVD drive of my V110. Are there any recommendations or things to watch out?I'd like to replace it with a SSD so that I can install OSX on the SSD and Win10 or Linux on the HDD. Once I bought such a caddy for my old Lenovo G560 but it froze right with BIOS startup.

I saw a smilar problem in Lenovo Z510. In order to solve the problem, caddy was removed and BIOS was restored to factory settings. After these changes, caddy with HDD could be installed again. AFAIK, there's no official caddy for your laptop. In Poland we have caddys from Zeta, which are quite good. I can't say what caddys are available in your country.

Hi all. I just bought a B50-70 laptop and I thought I upgrade it with a SSD. I bought a caddy and a 120GB Kingston Hyper X Fury and I installed it in the DVD-ROM slot after removing the DVD drive. The problem is that Windows 8.1 does not properly detect this drive. Under Disk Management in Administrative Tools, the drive shows up with a down red arrow and when I try to create a MBR on it, an error message pops up with an I/O error. I have the latest BIOS firmware from Lenovo. A Windows 8.1 installation disk does not recognize this drive as a valid on to install the OS on. The SSD works fine in another PC and it is properly detected by the B50-70 BIOS. My question is: does the B50-70 actually support a SSD via a caddy instead of the DVD-ROM? What can I do for this drive to work? Please help!

Try swapping the drives.Connect the SSD to the mainboard's SATA port to check if this helps with proper setting up. Then, try the hard drive in the caddy and see if there are any problems. If you encounter any, buy an external drive rack and use the HDD with it.

Holla Amigos!

Long time reader, first time poster... You know how it is!
I'm totally desperate...

I tried everything I can think of, yet my Caddy is still going crazy.
Specs:

Lenovo G510

Windows 7

i7 4700MQ

8GB Ram

AMD Radeon Graphics HD8750 M

1 TB SSHD

250 GB Samsung EVO SSD (currently in the caddy)

(the original build: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FQLVHK0/ref=oh_aui_...)
Basically, the Laptop will no longer detect the SSD (or HDD, doesn't make a difference) placed
in the caddy anymore. It never worked 100%, but for a long period of time it worked atleast most
of the time. Every 5th boot or so, it wouldn't get recognised - which is why I never put the OS
on the SSD, since it was to unreliable. Instead, I put my audio software, plugins and video caches
onto the SSD (I know, that's not really the point... But I feel like it made some difference).
For a few weeks now, no harddrive in the caddy whatsoever is recognised at all. Not in the Bios,
not in the device manager and not in Windows' harddrive manager. This was more of a gradual
thing, i got a bunch of blue screens durring the boot process (usually at the Windows 7 loading bar).
Occasionally, it will show up in the boot menu - but as soon as I actually boot, it will once again be undetectable.
The CD drive works just fine when I put it back in, so it can't be the SATA port.
I tried three different Caddys, so that can't be the problem either- unless the G510 need... Read more

Hi I have a serious problem. I was buyed caddy to my cd / dvd rom bay. When I run any of my disk it get same error. When I add caddy in to my PC and no matter if it's OS disk or secondary disk they "works" about 5-15 minutes.  When I do nothing with disk, just let him connect without any I/O operations (here It's only my though, because Windows can run some hidden process, I don't know, but they are absolutely quiet), they can live in my OS for forever. BUTWhen I for example start copying music from disk on my PCI to this disk in caddy / extarnal disk it starts copy at full speed, but with every socond of transfer connection get slower.BUT 2.a) When it's OS disk in my caddy OS get slower too and finally gets BSOD after about 15 minutes . b) When it's just external disk the whole operation stuck, but If I kill explorer.exe OS handle it and not fell into BSOD.  My NTB is NOT compatible with WINDOWS 10.. I read about it on official Lenovo website. So it's very annoying unsolvetable problem. Every servis can say: It's just not compatible notebook.  So, do anybody same problem? MyNTB : Lenovo G500, Windows 10 homesome tags:EXTERNAL  / CADDY / SSD / HDD something like this get slow and stuck Thanks anybody who can help.Best regardspuspo

Hi,Recently I decided to upgrade my laptop to a new SSD(default hard drive is a Western Digital 1TB). But I wanted to keep the default HDD as additional storage and for that i also bought a HDD caddy. I installed Windows 10 on my new ssd after replacing the old hdd with it and tried to connect the HDD through caddy in optical bay. And here all the problems started.1. Most of the time the PC stucks at the Lenovo sign when trying to boot with the HDD in the caddy2. If it boots (1 out of 10 times) the HDD is not recognized by windows3. However if I reinstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers driver, first time i restart the computer, the HDD works just fine, it's recognized and it's accessible. But after a new restart the  problems 1 and 2 are reoccuring. The BIOS sees the HDD connected.I tried lots of tutorials, steps, tools but nothing seems to work. The caddy was tested on another laptop with my HDD in it and it works just fine(so it's not a caddy problem neither an HDD one).I saw another similar topic here but it hasn't been updated since March 2018.Any clues on this? Is there any size limitiation for a caddy with HDD  in optical bay for this model? Is there any patch that can help with this problem? Any info would be really appreciated.

I would opt for using the old HDD as a USB external drive. Most "caddy" options do not work correctly in the Optical Drive Bay, there are quite a few threads that have extensive postings on problems with them.A USB hard drive external case is a cheaper option, one that will work with any USB enabled computer. This would allow for quick transport of files between computers and notebooks / tablets.Good luck.CB

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?
Thanks in advance.

I have Lenovo G510. I am using WD 1TB hard drive since 2 years. I bought new SSD and replace SSD with HDD and then replace the CD Drive with that 1TB Hard inside Universal Caddy. Initially i was getting problem the drive doenst show in Windows 10. I reseated the Caddy once again after that it started showing up.Now it shows the secondary HDD but after start up it stops working like i get 100% active time, and 0 read and write. There is flip in universal Caddy in which there are 3 states and i have set in the middle, but the problem is still there thatHDD that i was using from years stops working inside caddy after 10 minutes startup, the SSD is working fineWhat can be the issue? any ideas

Hello,

I appear to have a corrupt C Drive, the Lenovo test came back with storage device test failure. This makes sense to me, as I have had nothing but problems with this PC from day one, I had to re-install Windows 10 about 5 times...
It came with Windows 8 originally.
So I guess I need to get a new hard-drive. I remember doing something like this about 15 years ago, where it was just taking something out of a slot and putting something else in instead, but I guess times have changed! What do I need to do, and will this affect being able to install the operating system etc?
Many thanks for any help....

A:Lenovo H50: Options for replacing a failed hard drive (HDD, SSD, caddy, SSHD)

This maybe be an opportunity (as they say, to turn lemons into lemonade.)  Probably the one best thing you can do to add performance to your system (providing your storage requirements aren't extreme), is to replace your HDD with a SSD.

Cable connections are the same as your failed, existing HDD (SATA3 6.0Gb/s data and SATA power), and depending on the physical size of the HDD (probably 3.5" from the specs), you will need a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy.

Best SSDs: Q1 2017

Or, as a direct physical replacement, a 3.5" SSHD would be a good upgrade over a standard HDD (I'd avoid any 5400 rpm drives.)
