Q: media player 11 security update. [moved from Mozilla/Firefox]

I have a major problem with a new security upgrade from microsoft. I use media player to watch videos of my football team here in the UK. Since the upgrade to mp11 I have been unable to watch these videos as it is drm protected.( I need to install security update) Following the instructions to make ie the administrator--type in user name and password -- total failure. nothing happens. It won't accept what I put in. No matter what! I have no idea what else to do.I have removed mp11 and gone back to a earlier restore point but nothing works. Help please.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Users of FF should be advised that it is necessary to uninstall the older version before installing the new version. Rest assured, your bookmarks and other personal settings will carry over to the new version.Due in Fall will be the ability to install just the updates without having to uninstall/install complete versions.Regards,John

Firefox has been freezing up on me, and when I close it down, I get a bluescreen error. It also happens a lot of the time when I close Firefox down normally. This was happening before I updated to the latest version of FF. I am running Windows XP, and have recently started using ZoneAlarm and Avast on my system.

Can you give us the error in full that you are getting. Also, I would check and make sure that ZoneAlarm and Avast are allowing FF to connect to the internet.

I don't know if my problem is Firefox or WordPress but I thought I'd try here first.
I use WordPress to publish articles and usually copy and paste from the finished article in the Articles forum to WordPress but since I reinstalled Win 7 this no longer works as paste is no longer an option when I right click in WordPress, or at least in the particular part that I need it to. I can, however, do it in Internet Explorer, but images aren't copied over, which they used to be. I've tried all the usual things like clearing the cache, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Is this Win 7 or Firefox at fault? Moved from Mozilla/Firefox browsers

I am using Win-7 too but I haven't used IE. So my suggestion is to, try another browser for the same purpose and then see the effects (I feel firefox is well suited for the purpose). If you are getting same problems then, you are missing with some features of Win-7 otherwise, it is the website issue.

While using Overdrive Media Console to download audio books for
my Zune, I recently encountered a box stating I need to install Windows Media Player Security Update I have tried to download this update from several sources including Microsoft and have not been able to do so. I called Microsoft and HP(I'm using a Pavillion running Windows 7), they were of no help at all. Any suggestions that could be offered to help install the update would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The update is not for Windows Media Player but for the Overdrive program. Updates may be accessed through the Tools menu.

I am using Overdive Media Console, attempting to run Windows Security Update on Windows Media Player. I am running Windows 7X64 and have WMP12.

From what I've seen on the web, I am certainly not the first person to run into problems here. Yet any of the "fixes" I have found do not work for me.

When I open Overdrive, it tells me I need the security update for WMP. It also says that my version of security is, and to click here to update. When I do this, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I have used the Microsoft web link for the update;it tells me it is updating, then that the update has been successful. Yet when I go back to the Media Console, same message about update needed.

I have tried this in the "normal" mode, have also tried it as "administrator", both in Overdrive and also in IE. I have also gone to C: ProgramData/Microsoft/DRM and changed the name of the DRM file.( I do note that my DRM file is empty, so I can't imagine what magic this would work anyway.) I have modified Windows Firewall to allow Overdrive and all instances of WMP. I have disabled my adblocker. I have run sfc/ scannow with no problems found. I have emptied my internet cache.

All of this to no avail. And it's driving me nuts!
All I want to do is download a WMA file from my Public Library.

I would appreciate any help you might offer.

I downloaded a book,o the computer. When I doubleclick to open it, the software, the Overdrive Media Console opens. A window for the greater Phoenix Digital Library opens as well. When I click on OK to download the audiofile, I get an error message that says I need to install the secuity upgrade for media player. I tried to install the security upgrade for the media player from within the overdrive media console. When I clicked on Tools, Windows Media Player Security Upgrade..., the window about the upgrade opens and when I click on OK, nothing happens. I also went on the Internet, to the site, http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite/en/indivit/asp to download the upgrade but the word, upgrade is grayed out and I can not click on it. I assume I already have the upgrade that is why I can't click on it.

I need help to determine if the problem is with Media player and what to do about it or with the library download.

Some time ago, the Windows update stoped working saying that it wasn't activated. So i wanted to activate it, but it said that i was not possible to activate it. I also tried go to services.msc no the execute, and there the windows update is desactivated, so I tried to activate but it gave the error number 1058 and said:

" O servi?o nao pode ser iniciado porque esta desactivado ou nao tem dispositivos activados associados" In english this means : the service couldnt be iniciated because it is desactivated or doesnt got activated associate dispositives."

And dont know if that has something to do with the IE and Mozila problem which is the next:

Some websites (the ones that i go more times like hi5, hotmail, and others) do not open, it keeps loading for ever.. but in other sites it opens.. why?

In IE i can make google searches, but in Mozila that is not possible, it keeps loading.. ( the same sites do not open in IE and Mozilla)

What should be the cause of this problem?
How can I solve it?

About a week ago I switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox. While I can download audio files from MF to my Windows Media Player, after I save them, Windows Media won't play them again. I tried doing the same thing with RealPlayer, but it does basically the same thing. I tried saving the audio files not only on my Windows MP, but also on my hard drive, just in case the files are taken off the site I can have backup. That didn't work either, as the hard drive ones wouldn't play either. Is there another media player that will let me save downloaded files from Mozilla?

Does it leave an index.dat-type record of all the websites you've visited? Is it really resistant to spyware like I've heard?

A:Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR security?

As far as I am aware, index.dat is purely a Microsoft process. I suppose you can check by doing a 'Find Files' on index.dat and seeing what comes up, apart from IE references.

Don't know anything about spyware resistance. Firefox has a popup blocker but I assume you would still need something like SpywareGuard and/or Blaster to stop some of the 'drive by' installs, or AdAware/Spybot to remove them (although not using ActiveX is an advantage in non IE browsers).

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Most of time the freezing issue is caused due to bad drivers or out-dated drivers. Make sure all your drivers are up to date. Uninstall your Antivirus / Firewall and see whether that makes any difference. Reboot the System in Selective Startup. Also post us the MSINFO32 file.

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type "msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\Public\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to the C:\Users\Public\Desktop directory to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back.

The problem has to do with the way the Firefox and Mozilla browsers handle International Domain Names, or IDNs. IDNs are domain names that use local language characters. The fix disables support for such Web addresses.

Mozilla expects to fix the vulnerability in beta 2 of Firefox 1.5, the next release of the open-source Web browser. Beta 2 is due Oct. 5 and the final release of 1.5 is expected by year's end

Instructions to manually disable IDN: Type "about:config" in the address bar, hit Enter; type "network.enableIDN" in the filter toolbar, hit Enter; right-click the "network.enableIDN" item and select Toggle to change value to false.

If you make the manual change as above, there is no need to download from http://www.mozilla.org. See Cnet.news for the story: Mozilla offers temporary fix for Firefox flaw.

Stops serving updates to newest versions while it looks into startup crash bug

Mozilla has stopped providing security updates to Firefox users as it investigates a bug that caused computers to crash last week. Computerworld blogger Michael Horowitz first reported on the problem last Sunday after he tried to update older editions of Firefox on several different machines.
When Horowitz asked Firefox 3.5.11, 3.6.3 and 3.6.8 if there was an update, the browsers told him no newer editions were available. Firefox's up-to-date versions are 3.5.12 and 3.6.9, which Mozilla released a week ago when it patched 15 vulnerabilities, 11 of them labeled "critical."

Mozilla enabled the security feature W^X in Firefox Nightly (currently version 46) and plans to make it available to other versions of its web browser once they are upgraded to version 46.

W^X, spoken Write XOR Execute, is a security policy for memory that defines memory pages as either writable or executable, but not both. The feature is present in the OpenBSD operating system since 2003.

The OpenBSD base system has been modified to comply with it. This alleviates some buffer overflow attacks, including the most common stack-based attack: by ensuring that the stack is not executable, arbitrary code injected into it will not execute but instead cause the program to terminate

Most JIT (Just in Time) compilers use RWX (read-write-execute) permissions for memory pages which allows the compiler to patch code without performance overhead. This is the case for Firefox's current JIT compiler, but also for Chrome's or Safari's compiler.

While that is beneficial to the browser's performance while executing and running JavaScript code, it introduces issues at the same time.

The updates bring the current browser to Version, and the 2005 edition to These can be downloaded from Mozilla, or users can use the "Check for Updates" feature in 2.0, or await the popup notification. Greetings Experts,I recently made the mistake of updating my version of Mozilla Firefox 3.5 to the new 3.6.2. Naturally it promised it would give me 'Safer' web browsing and greater security. Until now I had not had any problems. After the update nothing but problems. The first problem I had to fix was the loss of the 'Right Click' mouse function. After that was restored I hoped I was done but I wasn't that lucky. Now, when I am at any website that requires me to enter any information prior to downloading a file or application Firefox does not work and the download will not happen. A good example would be if I was trying to download a mp3 file. I had at least three websites for mp3's that now won't work. If I use my old version of Internet Explorer they work fine. Before the update if I hit the Back button Firefox would simply go back one web page and that was it. Now if I hit the Back button Firefox displays a 'Resend or Cancel' box that must be clicked in order to go back. This is not only irritating but really stupid. Like the Right Click screw up whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired immediately. Is there any simple way to fix these things without uninstalling and losing all my passwords and bookmarks? I am using XP Pro. Any assistance will be appreciated.TQUADEdit: Fixed broken BBcode tags, reduced excessive font size to ensure ease of topic readability. ~ Animal

After an automatic update attempt recently, my Mozilla browser will open but no functions will work. When trying to manually update, the following is displayed:

AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)

I have attempted to uninstall, reinstall, run with new profile, cleared cookies, system restore, saved Mozilla installation download to USB drive and install from that location and none of these solutions worked. To make matters worse, my Internet Explorer (IE7) has been inoperable for months. I do have internet access as Buzzsaw and other internet based programs run properly and the modem will power other cpu, etc. The IE 7 issue is similar, I go to open up the browser and it simply states "page cannot be displayed" even when there is internet available and does not matter which site I attempt to go to. I have run out of options here and need some assistance to get one of these browsers to operate as now I have no internet access on this computer and cannot even download another browser to begin. Please advise if anyone out there has a solution short of reinstalling windows. Thanks.

Hello everyone! I just started using Mozilla Firefox Web browser again, and I wanted to check if my add-ons were up to date. Well, it says that 2 of my add-ons, which are Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U67 (version & Shockwave Flash (version both are potentially vulnerable plugins.

I click on update now, and it directs me to these URLs:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpuoct2014-1972960.html for Java
http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/flash-player/apsb14-22.html for Shockwave Flash

I'm really not understanding where I am supposed to download these security fixes, or if there are even any? Also, how do I find out if those two versions are the latest? I'm so confused. I'm not too knowledgeable about Firefox & their features. When I go to my programs on my laptop, it says that my Java is up to date & so is my Adobe Shockwave. Is there a difference between those & the plug-ins?

If anyone can please help me I would greatly appreciate it! I'm afraid something terrible will happen if I do not fix these problems! I also attached a picture of the add-ons.
