Problems saving Windows Settings after joing new Server 2012 Domain

Q: Problems saving Windows Settings after joing new Server 2012 Domain

This was originally posted in the Server 2012 forum, but perhaps it's more applicable to Windows 7.

I've joined the Windows 7 Pro workstations to the Domain using the SERVER2012/Connect app and that seemed to work fine. I made the Users all Standard, not Admin, and access to the Shared folders is working fine too. Users appear to be in the
Administrators group on the local machine, which is what I need.
However, a number of our applications aren't working correctly ... one writes changes to HKey Current User and those changes will not stick. Some IE sites that require changes have to be made each time; those changes don't save. Some
of the ODBC connections to SQL databases are behaving strangly as well. I tried checking permissions on the Windows Registry keys, and they looked OK. Turning off User Access Control did not help either.
If I log on to the workstation not using the Domain Account I don't have this problem. And, one of the workstations which had performed the Windows 10 Upgrade while connected to the previous Domain Controllder works fine.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated! Thx DMiller

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the dmz. I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the network. I can access the one in the network to the dmz without a problem, but I cannot access the one in the dmz to the network. The ip addresses in the network are different than the ip address in the dmz. I fowarded the ports but the dmz box still gets blocked. I tried to do it by VPN after setting the router to accept VPN. The connection still gets blocked. I set all the firewall settings.

I'm not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

I have a a few computers for my small business, and I find it a pain that when one computer password expires I have to repeat the process on every computer on my network. This is because they are all part of the same workgroup instead of a domain. If possible I would like to switch them over to a domain but I don't have any servers on location. Can this be done using ann online service? Any suggestions besides other than actually buyiing a server.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

I know that you've asked for replies which would not involve a server, but that would mean that you would get no replies. It's the nature of Windows domains to require a Domain Controller (DC). This requires a server. An ultra cheap workstation would suffice for an NT 4.0 domain. An Active Directory domain will require Windows 2000/2003 and a more powerful computer. Sorry.

Optionally, you could change the workstation policies to disable password expiry.

Nothing is more annoying than to have a company's technical support tell you that they cannot help you because it does not meet their policies. Oh and if we want to have them help then it would cost $150/hr to do so. So I am hoping you guys can help out here since I've been told by these people that I either have malware or I need to buy a new computer.

The laptop has been a personal laptop for a year now. My brother installed Win 7 professional on it and it has been perfectly fine. Now the laptop is going to be a work laptop and the company is trying to connect the laptop to their domain. Each time they try and connect it to their domain it forces the login to a temporary profile thereby not allowing the domain user to exist on the laptop. At the time when they first tried it had 1 local administrator. I've since created a second local admin and made sure all registry keys are clean and no erroneous profiles exist. I can still log into both local admins without any issues.

I receive 2 event errors when the user is logging in. I've pasted those below. I've also ran Hijacked and DDS and Malwarebytes. I've even tried changing the owner of the drive and user directories. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi
I have a strange problem I cant workout. It started with a new customer RDP 2012 server which we could not connect to an app once logged in.
If on an external PC it works OK.
If I create a fresh PC on our LAN it works.
If I this PC to the domain, it works.
If I move the PC to a UK Specific OU it stops working
If I move back out of the OU it still does not work
If I remove from the domain and do "GPUPDATE /FORCE /BOOT" and reboot and log backon as local admin account it still does not work!!
So there seems to be something in particular on the GPO in the UK OU in AD which causes the problem but even after moving the computer out it seems to store this mysterious setting and fails to work unless reimaged.
Any suggestions besides adding each option one by one in test GPO/OU????

I've got MBSA 2.3 (in fact, it's 2.3.2211.0) installed on a Windows 8.1 Laptop and I'm trying to scan a Windows 2012 R2 server against MS patch catalogue.
When I try I get this error:
"Computer has an older version of the client and security database demands a newer version. Current version is and minmum required version is ."
That is a copy and paste of the error. No version numbers are listed and minimum has a typo in it.
Installing MBSA onto the server fairs no better with a dialog box showing a script error.

I've bought a domain and am currently trying to configure the zone file so that it'll point to my DynDNS address since I'm hosting a website from home.

I have software on my router set up so that it automatically logs in and updates DynDNS with my public IP address should it ever change.

In my domain manager settings, I've left the DNS servers as the default (with the domain registrar/manager's DNS servers). I'm editing the zone file so if I make a CNAME record for "www" that points to "mydns.dyndns.org." (with the trailing period) is that correct? I'm not sure how long it takes DNS zone settings to propogate but if I try to go to www.mydomain.com, it says no website found as if my site didn't exist. (But if I go to mydns.dyndns.org, it shows my website fine).

Also, I want to set up a forum on a different host, say forum.mydomain.com
And my phpBB forum is in the folder /var/www/htdocs/forum/ (since my website's index.html and everything is in /var/www/htdocs/), is it possible to point forum.mydomain.com to /var/www/htdocs/forum/ ? (Since www.mydomain.com points to the index.html in /var/www/htdocs/ ) I'm using Apache on Linux

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

I am working at a elementary school with a mixed environment of Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro workstations.  We need a roaming mandatory profile for a generic login.  The student often are changing settings even with a GPO limiting what is accessible

The Windows 7 tools for creating profiles are apparently no longer available.  The current tool sets (Windows 8 and Windows 10) have not produced a workable Windows 7 mandatory profile.  We get one or another error message when we try them.
Is it still possible to create an usable Windows 7 mandatory profile with "today's" tool sets?
If it still is possible, would you please point me in the correct direction.

Hi folks,

I am having problems saving office documents to shared folders on a server. If i try to save a Word document straight to the server i get an error message "the save failed due to memory or disk space"(server has 4GB RAM and 179GB free space) , for Powerpoint and Excel documents when saving from them i get the error message "the file already exists, do you want to replace the existing file click yes/no (this is despite the file not being there already) by clicking yes , it then says cannot save file path and document name, the folder is marked read only. It appears in the folder but is 0kb.

I have set up this share folder so that anyone can put any documents into the folder but cant read them or delete them from their own pc. They can only access it from 1 particular pc which is used for meetings. Once the meetings are finished they can then delete them from this pc.

However i created a link to this folder on the server from my Intranet page to this folder and by saving the document to my desktop then copying into the folder via the Intranet link it works correctly.

i think the access rights are the problem and the the access rights for the folder are List Folder Contents and Write. I tried modify but by doing this i can access or delete files.

Can anyone help with this problem or be able to advise how to setup the folders i can get my setup to work correctly?

Thanks in advance

Warney

A:Problems saving files to server

Hi....

Can you provide more details on your access rights, both SHARE rights and direct NTFS rights assigned?

One thing I might add is that we have ran into this problem various times, mainly with larger Excel files. If you are working directly with the file from the file server, we get that error every now and then. However, if the file is copied to the workstation, edited, then copied back no problems whatsoever. Since it only happens once every "full moon" on our servers, I have never really investigated it any further.

Go ahead and provide the details on the rights. Also, what operating systems are you using; workstations & server.

Thanks!

Meaning the only way of turning this coumputer off is to either remove the battery or hold down the power button.

Normally i'd just, do s system restore in the hope that the problem would go away, however because windows has to fully log off for system resotre to work this fails.

My next step was to check my admin log and after a little research i found that i have the following warning message:

Source: Userenv
Event ID : 1517

"Windows saved user XXXXX\xxxx registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

At this point i went and explored what this meant which apparently is that a process was not terminating and thus wouldn't allow me to log off so i went and installed what many pointed to as the solution .... UPHclean, however though this appears to end various programmes, the log throws up :

FrameworkService.exe (1708)
svchost.exe (1252)

on various different occasions, the computer, however will still not shut down.

Hello Everyone!

I have a network with some computers ruuning windows Vista and a windows server 2003.
The computers are working in a network with a domain and fixed IPs and users logs in with their domain accounts at the computers.

Some computers are doing something that i cant figure out the reason.
Some computers works just fine, but two or three of them are having trouble working with the network eventhough they detect the network and open the folders shared on the network. If i try to run a software that normally works trough the network or if i open an office file or the windows vista network center the co mputer stops responding and windows explorer has to be restarted.
If i restart the computer the problem seems to be solved but it doesn't work all the time because sometimes i have to restart the PC several times until it works ok without this network related problem.

This problem seems to be random and i don't know if it is something related to the windows server or with the windows vista. I have other computers with windows vista on the network and they work ok.

I have already tried some situations but none of them fixed the problem because it keeps hapening:
Things that i've tried:

Start the pc with the anti virus software turned off;
Restart client and server DNS or DHCP service;
Unplug and plug the network cable;
Remove computer from the domain and add it again;

Anyone has an ideia of what might be the problem?

Thank you!

Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

A:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

Hi
I have recently installed a server 2012 and configured remote access and users are able to access RDP from all clients. Recently Windows 7 machines are not able to access the remote desktop, its shows an error "This computer can't connect to the remote
computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator. " I have disabled the network level authentication from local policy but the issue still exists.
Windows 10 machines are able to connect the remote desktop.
Please help me to resolve the same.
Thanks.

I log off Windows XP with the Quick Launch set under: Taskbar-Toolbars-Quick Launch.

Not to mention for some odd reason "My Documents" folder opos up whenever I log in as well. I don't if this is a virus or some crazy glitch.

PC = Windows 7 Pro 64-bit desktop.

For about the last 1-2 weeks, after I login, Mouse and Keyboard Centre spends about 5-10 seconds "downloading" then installing an updated, every login, then disappears from the screen.

At the same time, my network connection is "identifying". It does this every time I login now, even though it is the same network, and nothing has changed on the network.

It's like the PC has forgotten some of its settings, and needs to be auto-configured again each time.

In event viewer > system is:

Event 7006: The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for Start with the following error: Access is denied.

Is this a process that tries to write to the registry, and fails due to access problems?

If I expand the event in XML format, I see:

If I search the registry for "9C38ED61-D565-4728-AEEE-C80952F0ECDE", I see:

Troubleshooting tips welcome.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do this. Click here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html to download Hijack This.

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

I decided to run a registry cleaning program a couple of nights ago without setting a system restore point, which may be one of the stupidest decisions I've ever made.

Right now, Windows XP is not saving my settings and acting rather peculiar. In particular:

-When I boot up, it does not remember to display the Quick Launch bar. I have to put it on manually everytime.
-My folder toolbar settings are never saved - when I click on My Computer, I want the "Address Bar" toolbar to always show. As soon as I click off My Computer, the setting is forgotten and the address bar is gone.
-When I boot up, my desktop icons are arranged by name and not in the custom arrangement that I created for them.
-Most frustratingly, once I arrange my desktop icons back into the order I want and align them by grid, they instantly revert back to the old "by name" settings as soon as I make any kind of application change. (I'm not sure I described this well, so I'll give an example. Let's say I go into My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View. If I check any box or make any change and hit "apply," all of the icons revert back to the by name order and my 'align by grid' setting is completely forgotten despite the fact that my change had nothing to do with desktop icons).

I have tried restoring my system to a variety of points within the last week, but I have had no success; whenever I try, Windows XP gives me an error message upon booting... Read more

I have a problem with Windows 8 Pro.
Basically, it doesn't save profile settings, for example, created docs, desktop personalisation, log on window personalisation, etc.

So every time I log off or shut down the computer, all settings are reverted to default, like a fresh install.

Even the setting of Other Software's are also not saving, for example, when i change settings of media player's and restart my pc its reverted to default. Even the download history of Internet Download Manager is also reverted back when i shutdown.

Thanks for your help in advance!

My computer has gotten to where it no longer will save folder settings. I don't know why this would happen? It no longer opens my folders full screen and all of the folders are the same style. I go to my pictures folder and set it to view thumbnails. As soon as I back out and go back in, they are back to tiles. Every folder is in tiles no matter what I try to set it to. It got this way because I set it to save every folder as that option because, before, it would randomly change the view setting to any folder. One day, my pictures would be thumbnails, the next a filmstrip, the next tiles, and so forth without an increase or decrease in the amount of pictures there. I even change the "type" of folder to something different: Music, lots of pictures, few pictures, documents, etc. Still the same settings.

NOW it is getting to where it won't even save the order I put my quick launch icons in. I had them in the same order for over a year and now they won't stay that way. Nothing has changed?

Oh, and it's also giving me a blue screen of death when I try to open pictures with Windows Media Player.

Virus software and adware software don't find anything suspicious. Ideas? Suggestions?
