I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Thankyou very much guys!!!

I dont think you are going to find anything free that does this. We talk about this subject occassionally on the forums. You will either need to buy a high end router or run a proxy server like Squid. You could also try this as well.

Hey everyone, I got a new ideapad U310 this weekend. I'm very happy with it, accept for the fan. It seems to go fast for no reason. I found some old topics on this forum, one with a bios update, but it does not seem to work anymore on the current bios version unfortunately. Can anyody please help me? The fan noise is very annoying and after 2 days of working with the ideapad I rather have it turned off to get rid of the noise than continue working on it.

If you are using a wireless router, you could drop from G/N/Mixed to B.

You could also select a remote DNS server.

Curious why you would want to do this.

Who would want their external drives to slow down? Me, that's
who!

Besides apps like BurstCopy that attempt to maximize data
transfer speed, are there any apps that can set the speed,
usually in Mbps, to any number you want?

XP and eSATA drives are like oil and water. They don't mix!
You can tweak the hell out of the system, it doesn't matter.
XP was developed before these super fast drives. Vista fixed
the problem by using dynamic virtual memory management.

If you want to read about how XP uses static paged pool and
paged table entries (PTEs) just Google the topic. Compare
XP to Vista in this area and you'll begin to understand the
problem.

Please, no more tweaks or registry hacks. If there is an
app that allows you to set the data transfer speed, direct
me to the link or site.

Thanks guys.

Thank you for taking the time to read my request.

I purchased an HP entertainment laptop (windows vista os) about a year ago and I started experiencing problems with my speed a couple of months ago.

Most recently, I've experienced the following:

1. Slower speed surfing the net
2. Slow to open up an Internet Window (about 8 seconds)
3. Can not browse internet at the same time that an anti virus program is turned on (to monitor). Has occured with Norton and Trend Micro.
4. Can no longer access I-Tunes store or Rhapsody store when I open the applications.
5. You Tube videos are stop and go instead of running fluidly.

All of this is new behavior for my laptop...

Any ideas on what may be happening or what I should try to do next? I downloaded hijackthis, so I have that software program on my computer.

If anyone is willing to help, I would greatly appreciate it! Please let me know if you need additional information.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this query, as it combines hardware and software elements. Anyway, I have been using the same sturdy Gateway PC for some six years - P200, 32MB RAM, 56k internet, Win 95 - but I recently purchased a portable machine to go alongside it.

Obviously I was expecting a significant performance increase from a new machine (Dell SmartPC) with 2GHz P4, 256MB RAM and Win XP Pro. However, this has not entirely been the case. While programs which require heavy duty specs (such as Cubase SX for audio editing) run much more smoothly than they could ever have done on the older machine, many aspects of Win XP seem slow.

For instance (I don't know if this is common to the OS), the Start Bar and other drop-down menus are slow to load, taking a few seconds to appear - surely there is no good reason for this? Also, the internet is something of a problem. The new laptop also has 56k modem and I am using exactly the same ISP connection, but Internet Explorer under XP is significantly slower than on my old Win95 machine! Webpages take about three times as long (at least) to load, with the green status bar taking a good minute to fill. Why on earth should this be the case with the same connection spec and a much more powerful system??

I think maybe the system settings are not configured to the optimum, so I have considered investing in one of these web tweak/accelerator programs, but there are scores of them, and I've been told that they're actually rubbish... Read more

Hi,

for your Internet Speed Problems:
Try deactivating/deinstalling the QoS-Service (under Network Options for your dial up device), the service should be listed in the box with the TCP/IP protocoll, MS Client service, etc. (I don't exactly remember the name right now).

For your menu performance problems: You can deactivate many of the "visual features" in the advanced section of the task bar/starmenu options. This should increase the performance of the GUI.

Hope that gives you some leads...

I'd like to be more specific but I'm sitting at work in front of a W2K PC right now....

New Hp Pavilion 17-de019dx laptop running Dual Boot Windows 8/7, both OS's are getting horrible internet speeds of 1-1.5 mb download/11mb upload. A 10 year old HP on the same network gets 11 mb download and upload which is what we pay for.

I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew, updating Realtek RTL8188EE wireless driver, Intel chipset, etc. but there seems to be some hidden cause. The issue remains even if I switch off the other laptop.

This same thing happened when I tried another new laptop on this home network last year, causing me to take it back because no matter what I tried I could not get the speed up. Any ideas?

Maybe you can test it on a friend's network, the library, Starbucks (or the like), hotel.....

Testing on another network will at least tell us if we need to play with your laptop's settings or your router's.

Just as a test, set your router to only use the "N" protocol.

Hello guys, I bought a new laptop a few days back, but the internet has not been working as it should on it.

I can barely connect to the internet, and the signal is really weird. If I sit in my couch with my laptop the internet is barely working, though if I move about 10inches it will start to disconnect, reconnect, acting up, or not even work at all. Even if I move even further away I can still see my internet coming up on the list over available internetconnections.

I'm using an Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter, and whenever I try to troubleshoot my internetconnection a message saying "Problem with wireless adapter or access point - Fixed"

After running a troubleshoot and getting this message the internet will reconnect and work properly as it should be for 10-20 seconds, before returning to act up.

I have tried to reinstall the driver (latest version, atleast windows says so, but couldn't find any newer version online so I guess I'll have to trust windows on this one (?)). Also been trying diff. settings on powersaving, etc, but with no results yet.

I've had several computers, much older ones, all able to connect to my internet with no problems at all, no matter where in the house I would be.

Help. :-(

Whats the make and model of laptop? With this information we can try and find the correct drivers for you. It's all ways best to get the latest drivers from the actual vendors and not through MS updates.

Also, there could be some sort of interference from other appliances and electrical wiring.

What type of router are you using? Have you tried changing the channel on the router?

I bought the Z70 last August and gradually over time the speed had declined from 2 to 10 MBPS dependant.  I also use an old Acer Aspire 7741 Laptp and the speed-test has always remained constant at 30 to 35 MBPS as it should be.  We live in an old smallish terrace house, so distance from router to PC is no more than 20 feet. Even using upstairs is not an issue. I have to use a Netgear wireless-Dual Band dongle which does increase the speed dramatically on the Lenovo when it connects which is a bit temperamental. My ISP is TalkTalk (don't laugh)  They provided me with a HUAWEI HG533 Router (N-ADSL2+)  plus BT's Fibre Optic modem.  I'm on Windows 10 and my AV is Kaspersky (which I have been advised to remove) and just use the in-built 'Defender' which is more than adequate. I paid a lot of money for the L70 and someone suggested it could be the PC's 'wireless card' that could be the problem.  Can anyone throw some light on my dilemma please?  Thanks

Hi all.

This is something that is REALLY bothering me. Today, I put my moms laptop right next to my desktop computer because I was fixing something for her. I was downloading avast! antivirus on the laptop, and I got a speed of 2.2mb/s the whole way.

The problem is, when I do the same download on my computer, I can barely get to 700kb/s. Even though the laptop was RIGHT NEXT to my computer. We should be getting the exact same speeds, or at least close to each other.

There were no other programs running on either computer. No use of internet on any other computer. And I didn't test them both at the same time.

So I decided to go to speedtest.net and check if my predictions were correct. On the laptop, I tested it 3 times. I got 20mbps the first time, then the other two tests gave 19mbps.

I then tested my desktop computer. First test I got 10mbps. The other two I got 8mbps and 7mbps, respectively. This is REALLY pissing me off because there is no reason why the two speeds should be so different, seeing as the systems were put right next to each other.

So the problem HAS to be with my desktop computer, right? It's a relatively old Acer AST160-UA352H with an upgraded hard drive, RAM, and graphics card. It did not come with a built in wireless receiver. I had to install one myself. The "antenna" (I think that's what it's called) of the wireless receiver thing sticks out on the back of the PC. So it was installed by myself and not built in.

I recently purchased this new laptop.  It came with Win 10, 64 bit.  When the laptop is NOT connected to the Wireless network, my other devices work well.  My iPad, for instance, will have a download speed of approximately 11 Mbps and an upload speed of approximately 1.0 Mbps.  This is acceptable to me. As soon as I connect the new laptop to the wireless network, I get a slow speed not only on the laptop, but all of my other devices.  My iPad download speed drops to approximately 4 Mbps and an upload speed of approximately 0.5 Mbps. I have changed my Update Advanced Settings and have turned off "Updates from more than one place". I also turned off Windows Defender and installed McAffee Internet Security Suite.  I already had installed Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro. This problem came to light when I changed internet providers.  My previous provider promised 60 Mbps, but I was never able to get more than 30-40.  I wasn't happy about that, but the problem with my laptop was not clear.  I have an old laptop, an Acer, that I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10.  That laptop does not cause the same problem.

My desktop computer is connected by cable directly to the Internet. My laptop connects wirelessly to the same router that feeds the desktop. After running speed tests on both computers, I noticed that I get about 5 MB/s with the desktop and only 3 MB/s with the laptop. Is it normal to lose all this speed simply by virtue of going wireless? Or could there be some software on the laptop that is slowing it down? I keep it pretty clean in terms of malware, so I don't think it's a spyware issue. Also, I connect my laptop to an ethernet cable at work, and my connection there is extremely slow. The IT guy plugged in his laptop with the same cable and got speeds twice as fast as mine. So I must have something going on with my laptop that is slowing my connection speed. Any suggestions appreciated!

A:Internet Speed on Laptop Doesn't Match Desktop

You have extremely good internet service!

3 MB/s is 24 Mb/s is about the fastest actual data rate you can get with 802.11g. OTOH if you have 802.11n you should be able to get the 5 MB/s = 40 Mb/s.

It does not matter if you connect the network cable to the docking station or to the laptop. When the laptop gets removed from the docking station and the network cable stays in the connector of the laptop it switches back to the correct speed of around 500 Mb. Would it help to have an USB -> ethernet network adapter so the correct speed is there?

Hello

I have had a little fiddle with the 'Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel' but had no idea what I was doing and didn't want to wreck things!

Can you help please?

Hey All,

On My Windows 8 laptop, my speed in going to sites seems fine. I have TWC wireless Internet and my desktop, running Windows 10 always shows the full range with all the signal lines filled in on the system tray icon. My desktop, on the PC I had before ran Windows 7 and speed tests on both Windows 7/10 are normal.

But, on my Windows 8.1 laptop, the most I can get is the Internet icon not full, but one notch from the top. Today, it is barely off the first mark. On average, it goes about half way up the scale.

I have Turbo Internet from TWC and get about 22-25Megs down on my desktop. My laptop gets maybe 15-20 megs down. I should add that my laptop is in my bedroom on the other side of the house, quite far from my Wireless router. Pages seem to come up faster than my slow speed indicator shows. Troubleshooter in Windows 8 shows no problems. Cleaned the Cache in all browsers, flushed DNS. Am I just going to be stuck with a crappy signal range on this laptop because my Wireless router is too far away from it for a strong signal?

When I play Free Mahjong Planet – a simple game--on my HP 530 Laptop, its Core temperature climbs to 70°C.
I use Speedfan to monitor the temperatures.
During any other activity Speedfan records between 50°C and 60°C .
As far as I can find out the processor – an Intel Duo T2500 2.0 MHz running Vista Business – should have a maximum operating temperature of 40°C.
Can anybody help me?

A:Solved: How can I reduce the temperature in my Laptop?

Intel CPUs have built in temperature regulating systems, so that the CPU will never actually melt; all that will happen is that the system will slow down and eventually halt. Check out this video for a comparison between Intel and AMD http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9AQmuUEDxGI

Also how to cook an egg on your CPU: http://www.phys.ncku.edu.tw/~htsu/humor/fry_egg.html

In short, don't worry about the CPU temperature unless your system is showing signs of drastically slowing down.

Hi,
I am using Laptop 160GB HDD ,GB RAM, AMD TURION N550 processor.

My processor cooling fan runs very fastly from booting time and emitting hot air continually.

1. I changed bios settings as defaults.
2. Changed OS.
3. Cooling fan is clean and clear.
4. No dust in air Ventilaters.
5. CPU Temperature 54'C.

I don't know how to rectify this kindly help me anyone.

here i show my air outlet view of my laptop.

A:I want to Reduce my Laptop processor heat

Was this problem posted earlier or something else to do with your laptop. Now 54C is not really unusual for a laptop unless it is just idling or surfing the net. A scan will produce those sorts of temps.

I am not sure if I said earlier it could have been someone else but
1. Shine a very bright light into the air intake and make sure the fan is freely spinning and when stopped is not smothered in dust it is sometimes hard t see in normal light.
2. Look into the air out let and see if the slots on that radiator are clear or not.

If these are ok then it sounds like the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU has dried out and become ineffective in which case you will have to renew it.

What model of machine is it please?

A:Can't reduce giant font on laptop

Hello Technonuts,

Nice name. Seems like this is an issue with your screen resolution:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...isplay_change_screen_resolution.mspx?mfr=true

The above article should help fix this issue. However, you just go to the control panel and you will find the "display" icon there. Inside there you can change the resolution.

hi folks
i have 3G INTERNET Access with 1 GB limitation ,
when the limitation is reached there will be extra charge .

the thing is when your pc sends so many Queries to the internet "Upload data "
it counts as wasted MB's for me ,for this goal i've done the following :

Turn off windows update since it sends so many things from Administrator Tools -> services and few Services i don't want . but the thing is my bandwidth monitor indicates uploading data is continuously raising still .

so is there any ideas what to turn off and how to control Ports ?

A:reduce internet Queries

You can't totally stop uploads because your PC has to tell the connected server that you have received the data.

What i will suggest though is use firefox and install some plugins like adblock plus etc...

Hope this helps. Some others may have more suggestions.

Hi,

Just having a weird problem with Windows 7. When I am using earphones or my laptop speakers and then I close the lid on my laptop, it causes a great reduction in the volume of the sound output automatically.

While the laptop lid is still open, the volume on all programs remains normal.

However, when I close my laptop lid, it seems Windows automatically reduces the volume.

Let's say I put the volume on my laptop to 40/100 units in the sound mixer. All programs I am using are set to use the volume the sound output device is using, so everything else is also at 40/100 units, including Media Player Classic.

I am usually using Media Player Classic to play some FLAC music. I usually have earphones connected, but this issue recurs without them as well.

When I close my laptop, in about 2 seconds the sound volume will automatically reduce to 5/100 units in the Volume Mixer in the taskbar. This sound reduction also only applies to the program I am currently using to play music (e.g. MPC or iTunes, the two which I've tried so far).

After re-opening my laptop, I check the Volume Mixer and it shows only MPC or iTunes sound output is reduced. The system device speakers will still be at 40/100 units volume.

This is really frustrating, because I like to turn on some music, and then close my laptop so I can study, but I find I have to constantly adjust volume, because Windows is deciding to automatically adjust the volume for me... which I simply don't need... I understand how i... Read more

A:Windows 7, Closing Laptop Lid causes volume to automatically reduce

Hello,

I was able to resolve this by the following:

Right-Click the sound icon, and click "Playback Devices". There should be a tab that says "Communications" on the very right. If yours shows "Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%", setting this to "Do Nothing" will correct your issue, as it did for me (this was irritating me just as much as it did you).

I dropped my mouse a few minutes ago, and somehow that triggered internet explorer to enlarge everything on the screen. Enlarged as in a video setting someone might want want if they had vision issues. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get it back to normal size.

I am running Windows Vista, Windows Internet Explorer 9.

Please help me, this is driving my nuts!

A:Solved: How to reduce size of items on screen when using Internet Explorer 9

Press Alt.
Go to View
Click Zoom.
Choose 100% (or to taste)

For shortcuts you can press CTRL - to shrink the screen and CTRL + (or CTRL =) to increase the screen size. I also believe that you can hold CTRL while scrolling with the mouse wheel, but am less certain and can't confirm it on a laptop.

Only had this new pc a few weeks and it is so slow now after 3 blue screen of death crashes that caused this I think, I believe firefox caused. I am not sure how to read dump files to show you details of the BSOD. I am including details of my PC along with the hijack this log, my system is clean though according to antispyware and virus scans.

2GB DDRII RAM
VISTA ULTIMATE 32bit

I installed 64bit before this 32bit one on another partition of this HDD but cannot boot into it anymore at startup because this PC won't let me select it because it does not detect my keyboard in DOS mode for some weird reason.

Hijackthis log is attached file.

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Hi, I may be missing something pretty basic here as my tech knowledge is pretty poor. I have recently paid my internet provider to increase my connection speed from 1meg package to 4meg as I need a faster connection. Ive done a speed test and it says that my speed is pretty much what the service provider has promised but when I use the wifi in my place (which I used with the original 1 meg connection) it doesnt seem any faster at all. I thought I'd be flying from one website to the next but its not happening that way at all. Someone said I should consider buying an aircard to increase my computers ability to recieve more data from the router but then someone else said that is not what an aircard is for. Anyway, Im stuck and would appreciate any help i could get as at the moment Im paying alot more cash each month for no improvement. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers
