W7 64 bit only detecting 3GB out of 4GB

Q: W7 64 bit only detecting 3GB out of 4GB

Hey there,

I recently installed a 4GB DDR2 800Mhz and under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System i can see that installed memory 4.0GB (2.94 usable) so i have 1 GB of ram missing !

Preferred Solution: W7 64 bit only detecting 3GB out of 4GB

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had the same exact problem. It is a motherboard limitation. You need to go into your BIOS and enable "Memory Remapping". If I remember correctly, it's in the Northbridge settings.

I am having trouble with my windows installation after attempting to install windows 10 a second time on the same machine, but different partition.
I have used a bootable USB device with the windows 10 installation (created with the same machine and the same settings for OS).
After pressing F12 and selecting the USB as the boot device, i started the installation process and got to the stage where you select which drive / partition to install windows. But the list only contained the USB device i used to start the installation process, and the SSD did not appear when tried to refresh / reload drives (or unchecked the "hide incompatible drives" checkbox).
After canceling the installation process, i was met with the following message when rebooting windows:
"Your PC/Device needs to be repaired.
The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.
File: \BCD
Error code: 0x0000034
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you dont have..."

Before the error occured:
I have tried many different things BEFORE i got to the step above where I was able to start the USB stick and consequently ended up with the error.
However when the error occured the BIOS was reset to factory settings and i was able to log in to windows (and listen to spotify for an hour or so) before i tried the install that gave the error:

I tried installing windows 10 with a stick created from another computer. That time I got to the installation process. But when... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and I've been running on 4 GB RAM for a while.

Today I bought four RAM sticks, 2GB each, and installed it in my desktop. but Windows only saw 4 GB of RAM. So I removed two of them, but now Windows only sees 2 GB of RAM!

My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R . And I've installed the sticks on the yellow and red slots as you can see below:

And here are my RAM specs just in case:

Old RAM sticks: DDR2 5-5-5-18 @ 1.80v, 800MHz

New RAM sticks: DDR2 5-5-5 @ 2.20v, 1066MHz

I'm no hardware guy, so if anyone can make sense of this, I'd really appreciate it. And I've missed mentioning anything important, please let me know.

Hey guys,

I have a really weird problem where the CD-Rom on my laptop is not detecting CDs when i insert them.

I put the CD into the CD-Rom and i hear it spinning for a minute or so, then it stops. When i go to My Computer and try to open the CD by double clicking the drive, it just opens a blank drive. I have tried multiple types of CDs: games, music, and movie CDs all have the same problem. I know that the CD-Rom itself is not the problem because i had the company, Acer, send me a brand new CD-Rom and the problem persists.

I have tried reinstalling all of the drivers, multiple times with no success.

This has been an ongoing problem for weeks now, and is frustrating because i can not play games, listen to cds, or even watch dvds so if anyone can help, i would greatly appreciate it.

If you right click on the Drive letter and choose properties and click on the AutoPlay tab is the radio button 'prompt me each time for an action' selected?

I'll continue to research this, sounds like something wierd with your OS, guessing Windows here.

EDIT: Something just popped in my head. When you go into that area, check to see if your media (music files - .mp3, etc.) are associated with BlankCD in the windows.

You can check this another way. Open up My Computer and select Tools -> Folder Options. Scroll through the extensions list (.mp3, .avi, etc.) and see if for some reason thy are associated with BlackCD.

Hey Guys,

I have a PC with a 1 TB Sata HDD. I had an old 320gb IDE HDD that I thought I may as well use, So I opened the case plugged in the hdd and while the case was open turned on the pc to test and everything was fine, the hdd was detected and I was able to access it.
Put back on the cover turned on the pc and got suck at start up trying to find the IDE drive. Re opened the case checked cables and tried again...all good!

Now I left the PC for a while and now came back to it, once again I got stuck at the start up while the PC tries to detect any IDE drives. Only way I am able to get to windows is to press F12 to go to startup and select my Sata drive that has windows installed.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
I didnt touch any of the pins on the IDE drive so I beleive its set to master. I am also running Windows 7.

A:Detecting second IDE HDD

Is it the only drive on the IDE cable or is there another drive connected to the same IDE cable? Also is the cable 40 wire or 80 wire? Needs to be 80 wire with the blue end connected to the motherboard and the black end connected to he master drive. Also check the jumper of the drive and verify that it is set to Master, you can also try the Cable Select/CS jumper position.

Let me tell you a bit about the bg of my problem,i started my pc with 2 HD one with windows xp <c:> and the other was a backup <d:>,I wanted to try windows 64 bit so i bought another HD and installed it as <e:> after the i installed the trial of 64 i started to get probs with my boot.ini so i uninstalled it with the intention to install S.u.S.e linux but after i uninstalled it i couldn't access my <c:> with XP because it came up with a ntldr error so i installed windows XP on <e:> where 64 bit use to be and repaired my original xp from there. But i found out for some reason the disk names changed and my backup became <c:> my original xp became <e:> and my new xp became <d:>.

I didn't think it was anything serious so i uninstalled the new xp and installed s.u.s.e and told it to install on <d:> where my new xp was but it installed it on <e:> where my original xp was ,i'm guessing it was because of the mix up of all the names and stuff but now i lost my original xp and all its content & when I try to start the original xp (because it still comes up with the boot list) it says hal.dll is missing.

I tried starting s.u.s.e and it asks me for a password but when i enter it it comes up incorrect and when i try it on safemode it asks me for a username that it randomly selected when i was installing it and cannot remember what it was.

Hey guys.

I'm getting a DISK BOOT ERROR INSERT SYSTEM DISK message after switching a new power supply and CD-ROM drive into my old computer. I'm attempting to repair or reinstall Windows, but it's not reading my HDD as existing. I've tried switching IDE cables and changing things around in the BIOS, but to no avail. I know the HDD is fine because I tested it in another box, but whatever I do, the HDD won't read. Any suggestions?

I just bought a WD Caviar 80GB 8mb cache HD for my Dell Dimension 4100. I want to have this hard drive set as the slave for my computer; however, it is not being detecting. I connected everything properly with the jumper settings set correctly and it still does not detect.

One wierd thing is, if I set the WD hard drive as the master, it boots directly to a screen saying "insert a disk to A: to boot" or something like that. (although, I realize the HD has nothing on it and has not been formatted), the wierd thing is that it boots directly to this screen and seems to skip loading anything else on the system like the memory, floppy, etc.

Any ideas on what could be the problem here?

First of all hello to all @ Tech Support Guy Forums.

Basicaly I have a Sony VAIO (VGN-AR51M)

I had my laptop sent off for repair as my graphics card is a defect Nvidia chip and it had to be re-balled however you spell it. I now have the laptop back and everything is working absolutely fine.. But! I noticed when I checked in task manager & also the BIOS my laptop was only detecting 1GB of ram in total.. It detected the whole 3GB before just fine.. So i tried a couple of things out..

I took out the 1GB stick of RAM and left the 2GB stick in and it detected the 2GB just fine. I then did the same method with just the 1GB stick left inside and it only detected the 1GB.. (I tried doing both the sticks in each slots each time to check one of the RAM slots wasn't faulty)

The problem I'm having is that when both the sticks of ram (2GB & 1GB) are in the laptop it only detects 1GB of ram.. I have been racking my brains for the past 2 hours wondering how the hell this is possible but it sure as hell is..

So my question to you guys.. How do I fix it?

Hey, I'm having problems with getting my GPU to work with Windows 7, I'm dual booting with Windows XP x86 (32bit) and with XP it's working perfectly.

I've done a CPU-Z report and uploaded the details via my website, you can check out the specs here. I've done the majority of troubleshooting steps that I've found via google, MSN, general bulletin board lurking and so on, I've yet to find the answer.

I'm running Windows 7 x64.

CPU-Z report on Windows 7 x64.

The error I'm currently recieving.

I've tried getting the drivers via the Windows Update tool.

I've tried going through the Device Management and locating the "nv_disp.inf" file, but I couldn't do it via that way, only goes to the "English" folder and no further.

I've also tried doing the same as above except going to "show compatiable hardware" unticking that, then clicking "Nvidia", then locating the 9500GT from the list and then trying that way but it does not work either.

I have researched this topic for a few days and have found many simular problems. However none of which have helped me. So here it goes..

I recently replaced my heat sink with an aftermarket heat sink (same socket type and all)
I through everything back together made sure everything was plugged back in correctly and now my monitor does not boot with the computer. The orange standby light just stays orange. If I turn it off and then back on it says scanning and then a green arrow comes up next to DVI. Then the monitor goes to sleep. There are no beeps on boot-up, all the fans and lights work. I did notice the motherboard temp clock says "FF" not sure what that is.

So far I have done the following:

Reset monitor cables
Reset power on monitors
Re seated memory
Re seated video card
Tried a brand new video card
Did a hard boot down with the power chord out and holding down the power button for 30 seconds

none of these have worked. The monitors are fine I tried them on a different computer.

There was no short circuit that I am aware of I kept grounding myself to avoid this.

I am at wits end here and can't figure it out..

Ok, I have run out of ideas on this..My setup is win7 64, P35 chipset, 4g ddr2,Evga 8600GT dual dvi with dvi to vga converter s-video out, Q6600, 160g pata hdd and a Gateway EV700 (17").
I cannot get win7 to show the desktop, or detect the monitor....I have an LCD TV hooked to the S-video connector and that is the only way I can see the desktop.
The main monitor will show everything up to the point of showing the desktop..that is where the mon goes blank and I have to look at the TV.
Someone suggested I try XP driver for the monitor, but it will not install and just gives a dialog saying that winxp and above already has the drivers nessesary.
I have tried the win7 64 drivers from MS update, Nvidia, and EVGA (both win7 and Vista 64 drivers).
I have tried both monitor outputs. nothing.
I have a KVM which was not an issue for XP, but I am not sure about W7.
Taking out the KVM is my last resort, as I am running out of ideas.
I also tried using an old Diamond Stealth PCI card to no avail....It wouldn't even post with it.
If I had a VGA to S-video converter, I would try that, but for now, I am stuck trying to use win7 on a tv screen that is only 12".
At 1024x768 it's not much fun trying to read anything on it.

I forgot to add that the Nvidia ctrl panel does not show multi display menu

Yesterday my AVG started to detect a trojan, and which time I recieved several system alerts to the effect that my harddrive had been damaged or corrupted. My desktop was then wiped clean, save for my network manager and recycle bin. my entire startmenu is cleared except for the shutdown menu. I was able to confirm that my harddrive is still functional by going to the C: drive through the network manager, and get online by using internet explorer. However, I have not been able to remove the virus, and upon start up it pasts several error messages reporting a failure to reade/write to my harddrive and opening a "file recovery" program which claims to detect problems with my harddrive.

W7 won't detect my 9800gtx

I recently bought nvidia's setup for 3d gaming, and didn't realize xp wasn't supported.

So I've grabbed two spare HD's and installed W7 on them in RAID 0.

So i've got an xps 600, and i've installed w7 fine on it. At first I put in a 7800 in and used f8 to boot in 680 res. I then installed the 7800's drivers which are supposed to work for the 9800 also. I shut it down and put the 9800 in, and it boots fine.

However, it doesn't detect the 9800 card. Windows kept auto-installing nvidia drivers when I would boot up with the 9800, and they would give me a black screen after windows started. So I deleted the drivers in driverstore/filerepository and that stopped it from installing the bad drivers.

But now i'm stuck with it saying in device manager that I have a VGA compatible video controller, but it won't list it as my 9800. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with the 9800 plugged in, and despite the install and reboot going smoothly, it still won't see the 9800.

It did recognize my 9800 gtx before I rebooted when windows auto installed drivers, but I would get the black screen and it wouldn't boot. I can't install my 3d stereo drivers because they say I don't have a new enough version of geforce display drivers.

I've tried using both 186.18 and the new beta 190.38. I also downloaded some nvidia driver from april from microsoft update, and it gave me the black screen as well.

My 9800 is obviously using the nvidia drivers... Read more

Seems purely a driver issue. Uninstall all the video drivers that you have tried so far from safe mode and then restart the computer in normal mode and then simply do a windows update. You should find a generic video driver for the card and that should do the job of gaming.

Hey guys, not sure if I've got the right section so I thought I'd give this a go here.

Trying to install a 5670 my parents' computer, their motherboard's a Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H. They're currently using the on-board video of the motherboard so I disabled that, installed the card and booted into Windows. The card is on, producing heat but all I get from Win 7 is "Standard VGA adapter". Tried installing ATI's latest drivers, no go. Tried searching Windows Update to find drivers, no go. Bios is up to date.

Any ideas?

A:Win 7 x64 not detecting 5670.

Did you get a message from the installer saying that video hardware could not be detected? Run Driver Sweeper in safe mode and run the installer again.

As an aside, you don't need that card if that PC doesn't play games. The integrated graphics are a fine option for non-gaming.

Dear All,

I'm new to this site, and Spyware as of this week. Having looked at the other topics, I know you guys can pull this one out for me!

I am running Norton and Antispyware (installed after problem arose)

When I start up my pc, after about 1-2 mins my internet dialler pops up and prompts me to connect. If I go to settings it shows it is trying to go to a website clon.biz (can't remember if the dialler number changes - don't think so)

Antispyware now recognises the attempted change of setting, and is blocked to not allow it. However it still happens everytime I start up, and really I want to to go away.

I have run a full scan, nothing.
I have looked in obvious places (startup menu etc) - nothing

As a computer dunce I'm unsure about stoping any processes or applications as they all appear to be recognised.

Any ideas????

Good afternoon everybody,

I am asking this perhaps silly question because I'm having issues with my computer.

What is the difference between HiJackThis and Combofix ?

Is one more dedicated to some seachs than the other ?

Many Thanks for your answer

A:detecting malwares

Hello fermomi and to BleepingComputer.HijackThis (HJT) and ComboFix (CF) are fundamentally different tools. HJT is primarily a special registry frontend that scans certain portions of the Windows registry and displays them in an easy to read format. It also make removing entries from said portions of the registry easier. Not everything that appears in a HJT scan is malware!!! It requires a good deal of knowledge and training to be able to interpret a HJT log correctly. CF on the other hand is a special tool designed by sUBs. Its purpose is to assist a malware removal specialist in cleaning a machine. CF is an extremely powerful tool. For the benefit of both you and others who may read this thread, please heed the following warning:ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. When CF is run without trained assistance, it can no longer be considered a "safe" tool. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. You may find this topic to be helpful - ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here***************************************************If you are having problems with malware, I would suggest you start a thread in our Am I infected? I was able to use Hiren BootCD USB to gparted resize/copy my sata SSD.
My SSD displays just fine in this PC, checked for errors, nada, all good.

But. The MBR is not right. It would not boot in PC2.

So I booted (pc2) from the Win7 disk and chose repair.
This asks for which drive to repair - none were listed.
Click Load Drivers, navigate to the C:\NVIDIA\15.56\IDE\Win764\NVstor64 (not the nvstor64.sys)

This results in a list of the-same-thing-to-chose-from

NVIDIA nForce ATA controller
NVIDIA nForce ATA controller
NVIDIA nForce ATA controller
NVIDIA nForce ATA controller
NVIDIA nForce ATA controller
NVIDIA nForce ATA controller

Gee thanks NVIDIA.........................................................

I tried every single one TWICE! No drives listed.
I connected to a different SATA cable, same result.

GParted opens and tries to read the drive, never does. Just keeps trying to read.

First, have you used their tool to update the firmware for the drive ?
Have you set BIOS to AHCI mode ?

I recently had to reinstall windows due to a severe infection. I was unable to determine the viruses involved.

The problem is that i have a jump drive that I keep alot of file for school on. Before the infection killed my computer i had it plugged in. I have tried searching the forums to get a tool that would look for infectants on USB drives but was unable to find any. I have used MBAM to search it and it came up with nothing. I there anything I can do? Reobtaining 800mb of pdfs is not possible given my time constraints so I need something to check this drive before i put it back iinto my freshly reinstalled computer.

I would start with sub's flash disinfector, I use it on every drive I come accrossPlease download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.Next scan the drive with an updated good antivirus like avira or whatever one you use, then a good online oneMBAM was never intended to find infected installersI am checking to see which online scanner will allow a selective scan of only an external drive

I recently upgraded my stationary computer with a bunch of new components, just harddisks remaining. Anyway, I bought 32GB RAM, might've been a bit overkill, but RAM is cheap these days. The motherboard support up to 64GB RAM and I'm running Windows 7 64bit. The RAM is 4*8GB, but in windows it only detects 8GB RAM. What can be the cause of this and how do I fix it?

try downloading cpuid or speccy and check how much the system detects and in what slot it is detected in, after that reboot and check the bios, report back

Hey all, new user here. Problem is as follows:

Downloaded a suspicious program and ran it.
Program turns out to be malware, turns on my webcam, opens up a screamer picture on my default browser.
I go and disable the webcam through the devices window.
When I go to an IRC channel for help, the malware alters my text and keeps me from typing legible words (Except in one instance where I typed "Fu" and it used that to write "bleep gay".
Disconnected from the wireless internet, didn't notice anymore text alteration, but I also hadn't typed after that, so it's possible that it would have kept doing so had I tried typing something.
Restarted computer instead of shutting it down on accident. During the boot, I used a hard shut down.
Booted up again in normal mode, used msconfig to make the computer restart into safe mode.
Downloaded both Malwarebytes and TDSSkiller.
Used Malwarebytes Quick scan.
Used TDSSkiller scan.
Used Malwarebytes full scan.

I use Microsoft security essentials as my antivirus, if that's important. I found 12 infected files as a result of all three scans, but I'm not sure whether I've purged the malware or if it's got some hidden file somewhere. My question is, if I do still have malware, how do I find it?

A:Detecting Malware

It would help if you would post the MBAM logs and TDSSkiller log.

What "suspicious" program did you download, run and from what website?

Have you uninstalled the "suspicious" program?

Hello, I'm new here. If this is posted in the wrong section, I apologize.

Today when i booted my computer, it said "windows has detected a decrease in memory" I turned off my computer, unplugged it, took out all 3 sticks of ram, put them back in...

Still, windows is only detecting 2gb of ram when I really have 3gb of ram.
Performance Index for ram went down from 5.9 to 5.5

Can someone tell me what to do so that windows recognized all 3gb of ram.

here's a a couple screen shots:

A:Windows 7 64 bit Only Detecting 2gb of ram?

It is giving this behavior, because likely, one of your memory sticks, or one of your memory slots has died. Swap them around to find out which it is, and then you can go about replacing that part. Hopefully, it will be one of the sticks, as that would be much simpler than replacing the mobo.

Hi Everybody, I think my laptop is infected with a keylogger. ALL that I key in using my keyboard (word files saved on the hard disk, passwords for emails, websites visited etc ),all the programs that run or have run on my system and all the folders accessed become known to "others" -possible those who share my wireless network, when I am online. Please don't ask why I feel so, but I think its true !!

It could also be a network security (IP/packet sniffing) issue, but I would first like to make sure that there is no keylogger running on the system . Given below is a log generated by winpatrol for my system (similar to Hijack This). Will really appreciate you assessment for anything thats obviously wrong and any other suggestions you may have on network security as well.

Just before posting this, I discovered "AVRedirector.exe" process and read that it could be harmful and so disabled that, plz have a look at other details and let me know.

Thanks, kd

Lately I've been having trouble trying to get any CD to work on my laptop. I can hear that the CD-ROM responds to the disk, but nothing happens, nothing loads.

It only worked once, but for that one time I had to repeatedly put the disk in the CD-ROM.

I have checked for posts on this, but people only have problems with it AFTER they download windows 7, and my laptop already came with Windows 8 so I don't know what the problem could be.

Anyone have any ideas? I really need to load Microsoft but the CD-ROM isn't able to load it.

Have a look in Device Manager. If you see one or more yellow question-marks in the device list it means you need to install the drivers for the devices which currently don't work. The drivers can be downloaded from your PC or laptop maker's website if they support Windows 7 on your particular model.
