I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Has anyone successfully got any Group Policy Preferences working, specifically Drive Maps? I think it applied my Local Users & Groups and my Folder Options preferences, but it definitely did not map my network drive. According to RSoP, there aren't even any "Preferences," but in GPMC (from RSAT), it shows the preferences were successfully applied.

I checked to ensure I had KB943729 installed for Vista X64, and it shows up in Installed Updates. I am lost, so if anyone has this working, please let me know.

For some reason, I am not able to add my Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Machine to my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. I am very new to this, but Active Directory is enabled and I have created a local FTP on the server, and I added Windows 7 Server Management console to the Windows 7 machine.

My domain name is kirves.domain, is this too long? I also added the IP config manually to both machines. Both are using the same DNS and Alternative DNS IP. The IP is not controlled by me so much, it is more controlled by the ISP.

So I can see both machine on the network, I can PING the server from the Windows 7 machine using the IP and DNS IP. But I cannot add the Domain to the Window 7 machine.
I did or I think I did correctly put the Windows 7 machine in the Group Policy.
So what am I doing wrong? It shouldn't be this hard.
Thanks
Ken

After 5 days of trying to make a domain using Windows Server 2008 and getting a DNS error I cracked it and my other laptop could join my domain.

But what goes around comes around.

I made an account in Active Directory Users and Computers and made it a standard user but in the log on screen I entered the credentials I get an error.

"You cannot log on using this method please contact you local administrator" or something like that.

Can you help me with this error?

Welcome Pie015 to the windows 7 forums.

Have you set up the ad permissions for "users" to be able to log onto the server from remote?

What groups have you added "users" to..

I am trying to connect Windows 7 to the domain of a Windows 2008 Server. We have ~20 other Windows XP clients able to join and connect to the domain.
I get this error message when trying to join the domain:

An attempt to resolve the dns name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed.

I have the TCP/IP set to obtain the IP automatically and the DNS as static with the correct DNS IP.

I can ping the server using both it's IP and host name.
DNS functions propperly when the host name is typed into the URL bar.
It also says that I have limited connection but I think that is because the network that all these computers are connected to is not connected to the web.
Any ideas?

Hello all,
I am currently having an issue with one Windows 7 PRO pc(fully up to date windows and drivers) accessing one windows server 2008 share. This particular server 2008 share is accessed by about 20 users that have no issues accessing this share. I can see the file if I browse to the network share via \\192.168.x.x\share.
When I browse to \\servername\share it displays one folder out of 100. I can resolve the server name by I.P. and FQDN. I can see other network shares just fine on this server also. Firewall is off and AV is uninstalled on both servers. This is the case for all users on this pc including domain admins. I have un joined and renamed this pc from the domain as well. I'm at a loss and any help is appreciated.

Hey,

All of our computers at work have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and are connected through Server 2008. One computer, which I recently imaged and deployed, is having an issue connecting to network folders. The strange thing is that all networked drives are set for access through group policy. The computer in question is able to access allowed folders but, when I go to the main computer screen, instead of seeing Network on the left hand sidebar, I see Computers and Devices. Also, the machine will not allow anyone, even administrators, to map a network drive. The user also cannot access files from links in emails - i.e. drive:\folder\file. I'm wondering if there is some glitch in the policy or should I just re-image the machine. My boss wants to avoid the re-imaging but, even going through Network Troubleshooting, we can't seem to locate the problem.

Hey chaps,

I've been handed an oldish Samsung X60 laptop at work for a short period, which is sporting WIndows 2008 Server,

Unfortunately, a person with the best intentions decided to factory reset it in case there were any software clashes...

Which isn't normally a problem, but:

There is no driver disk, and the laptop is using standard VGA settings and not detecting the ATI mobility radeon X1600 that the sticker suggests is inside.

I downloaded a catalyst thing that installs but then doesn't do anything
I tried add hardware
I downloaded drivers from Samsung for the ATI but when installing they stop and say i should try installing standard vga drivers first???- it already as these
I checked in BIOS and i couldnt see a setting for activating the graphics card

What else can I try?

Cheers

Post a screenshot of device manager. You may need to install your chipset drivers prior to attempting an install of any video driver.

FWIW I never install CCC or Catalyst Control Center. I just install the driver only; not the rest of the amd/ati stuff.

. I'm posting this in this blog since I did not get a reply in windows server 2003/2008 blog. Anyways I did a clean install of windows server 2008 on the IBM x3400 machine. Set the time and the time zone. Then I installed the MS SQL 2005 enterprise edition on this server. While installing the SQL 2005 it did give me and error saying that this version of SQL is not compatible with windows server 2008. But then it did continue with the installation. After everything was done I could connect to SQL with the SQL authentiation, configured it , created the database, ran the query. everything workned fine. But now when I rebooted this server and tried to log on to SQL with the same credentials for SQL authentication it just refuses to log into it. I do not know why this is happening. I looked up on the net for any know issues and found out that inorder to run SQL 2005 on windows server 2008 we need to install sql 2005 sp 2 and another hotfix which is given by microsoft. But if this is the case then why would SQL work fine when I just installed it? It shouldn't have worked even at that time.. Anyways please somebody lookup into this matter. Thanks

We have been getting sporadic reports from our users of the error, "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."  The workaround has been to dejoin and rejoin the domain, but it keeps happening and we need a permanent
fix.  We are primarily a laptop shop.
It has been suggested we disable the automatic machine accouint password change on our domain members in GPO.  While this may be a viable option with relatively low security risks, I'd really like to figure out why it's happening and try to
fix it.
The machines can lose the trust relationship at random.  It can happen overnight, or after going into hibernation.  I've had it happen to me a few times.  The DCs (we have 2) both show error 5722, but one is spitting out a specific Kerberos
error that the other one is not:

While processing an AS request for target service krbtgt, the account kriegesh did not have a suitable key for generating a Kerberos ticket (the missing key has an ID of 2).
The requested etypes : 18. The accounts available etypes : 23  -133  -128  3  1. Changing or resetting the password of kriegesh will generate a proper key.
My main issue is trying to determine why this continues happening and if we can resolve it without disabling the account password.  If that IS our best option, then so be it.  Any
thoughts are welcome.
Thank you very much in advance!  ~Sarah

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

I've run into a problem on my system involving my SSD, OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS, causing my system to pause/lock-up. Upon contacting my manufacturer (Origin) about the problem, they told me that it was my SSD firmware most likely. After researching I confirmed this myself. Boatloads of people have had this same issue with the older firmware, which I have.

Updating should solve all my issues. But PROBLEM : My secondary hard drive does not have a compatible partition style for installing Windows (it has a different style because it's a very large HDD) and I can't get remote assistance on the issue due to my ethernet port being broken. I can't send in my system either because I'm currently living as an expat in China and sending things like this back and forth across the border is nearly impossible and not affordable. There are no Origin shops here in China and even if there were I wouldn't exactly trust it. The only place you can send a computer in is Origin HQ in Miami Florida, which I can't do.

So yeah, I'm in a complicated situation. My SSD is freezing up constantly now. I need this fixed or I'm as good as done for.

I have these other storage devices. It's all I've got now :

Can I install windows to one of the spare drives?

You cannot update the firmware without reinstalling Windows to another drive? I know I haven't updated a lot of firmware in my time...but have my hard drive, required nothing other then running the update.

I want to wipe my hard drive and then re-install windows.

My problem is downloading updates. At the moment, I'm tethering my phone to my PC to get internet. I'm afraid that re-downloading updates would use up all of my data.

What I would like to do:

Copy all Windows updates from my internal hard drive to my external drive and then re-install them later.

Is this possible?

When I right click on the installed updates from the control panel, I don't have an option to copy the file or locate it on my disc, only to uninstall it.

When I look on the C drive, non of the files have modification dates that sync the Windows updates. Other than the Control Panel, I don't know where they are on my machine.

If anyone knows how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :-)

For the record, just in case anyone is concerned....
I have wiped my drive before and re-installed Windows. I have the software to wipe a drive and Windows installation discs.

Hey people, here's my problem:

(In Windows XP) I connect my digital camera up to my pc via the usb cable. Under 'my computer' the camera is listed under 'scanners and cameras' (and works okay, I can download the pictures okay).
This is all fine, but the problem is, I want use run some file recovery software on my flashcard, but the software won't see my camera unless it's listed as a lettered drive ( eg f: )

Is there anyway of configuring windows to make my camera appear as a drive in the 'removable storage' section? Alternatively, does anyone know of any file recovery software that will work in these circumstances? (I've tried more than 6 know with the same problem).

Surely someone else must have hit this problem before but I have searched in vain to find anything about it on the internet...
Thanks for any help!

A:recognise camera as removable storage device? (windows xp)

Welcome to TSG.

Most cameras show as a removable disk and others as a camera, but only when the camera is connected and some have to be turned on.

Some older model cameras evidently donít show up that way. I donít think there is a way to correct it if it isnít showing with the camera connected and on.

I just checked and the camera I have hooked up doesnít show in Scanners and Cameras but is showing as a removable disk in Windows Explorer. Maybe they do one or the other but not both.

Other than buy a card reader I see no way to run the software on the card if it isnít showing as a drive. Iíve never read of a way to force it to show as a drive if it is one that doesnít.

I'm unfamiliar with the updates in Server 2008 - but most Vista SP2 systems have more than 250 updates after SP2. Check Windows Update to ensure that you have all available updated.

I suspect a hardware issue, but am going to ask someone else to have a look at this topic before I recommend anything specific.

One of these is a DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION (c4)

Here's a list of the drivers that showed in the last 2 memory dumps (both are from Jan 2012). Please note those that are highlighted in RED:

- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please either update the older drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.

port on my desktop. The stick or camera appear in Windows Explorer under Control Panel/Portable Media Device. Since installing SP2, however, when I attempt to access their files, nothing shows up, and when I attempt to move or copy files to them, a STOP symbol is displayed. Other USB devices work normally, and both the memory stick and camera work normally on my laptop and appear as removable disks, as they did on my previous desktop.

Following advice so far: fully updated system (including drivers), virus and spyware checked, disabled suspicious-looking services--which has not resulted in any other problem. What next?

I have a file server at home with a Quad core, 4gb ram, and a 3tb of storage. It is running Ubuntu Desktop and sharing video files primarily. From my school I have access to a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2. Other than the server I have 2 Windows 7 desktops, 1 Windows 7 laptop and 1 Windows Vista laptop.

I am interested in moving to a Windows setup as I am done with the ?Ubuntu? experiment. WHS looks like what I need, but I have a free copy of WS 2008 and I would miss the $50 for WHS. My goals can be described best as:

Need to Haves:
? File/media server (local network)
? Dedicated game server for various games for friends.
? Print server

Nice to Haves:
? Music/Video Streaming over the internet
? Automatic backup server
? File server over the internet
? Ability to manager other PC?s from the server

My ability as an admin:
? No experience
? Willing to learn and put forth initial effort to get setup
? Don?t have time to really spend more than 1 day moving from Ubuntu to the new setup.
? Don?t want to be stuck constantly screwing with things to get it right or keep it running.

What is going to be best option for my situation?

A:Help choose: Windows Home Server 2011 vs. Windows Server 2008 R2

Honestly, I use both in their proper settings, and unless you have a domain at home with multiple users, Windows Server 2008 R2 is overkill...and would require much more tweaking and add-in apps to do what you want. Given your write-up, WHS 2011 is the way to go. It does much of what you want out of the box, and is designed for people who don't want to become server admins (or at least not be forced to).

I just set up a Server 2008 machine, which was accidentally given the wrong domain name. Its picked up the correct domain IP, but it won't let me change the domain name, stating that the Certification Authority Service is running. I don't see that in my list of services. A web search for solutions doesn't turn up equivalent problems.

As it was querying me for the server name and domain during setup, it told me they would not be changeable. I'm hoping that despite that message, I can change them without wiping it out and starting over.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Server 2008 change domain trouble

Is it an SBS 2008 server? This is the only type I know that sets up a CA on install. Normal 2008 you have to install the CA and configure yourself later?
It depends how far you are down the installation as to whether it is worth changing the domain name. Basically if you have only just installed it there isn't a lot needed to change the domain AND if it is not an SBS server.
If you have done a lot of config then you will have to reverse most of that. if it is an SBS = NO CHANCE! Just re-install it...or keep the domain name.

So I have a client who just got 10 new windows 10 machines and added them to the windows 2008R2 domain. By default, Edge is the set browser and I know I can manually go into the profile and set the preferred browser but the problem is multiple users connect to each machine (this is in a DR office) the nurses move around and log into their profiles on each machine. So they would have to do this on each machine for each user which they don't want to do.

Is there a way to enforce the browser for all windows 10 machines via GPA to use IE11 that comes with windows 10?

My idea was to either domain wide on windows 10 machines use IE11 or if not possible created a GPA based on OS and set the default browser.

Or worst case figures out a way to remove Edge from the machines.

Does anyone happen to know a way or ran into this issue previously?

A:Any way to force IE11 as default browser via domain GP? Server 2008

Check with Microsoft before attempting to remove Edge, you might end up with in-valid/un-authentic Windows. If memory serves me, I think the IT people had to develop a PUSH technology, a forced net-station download and a forced Top/Down maintenance, in order to enforce certain defaults.

I run Win XP Home SP2 on a Acer laptop. I have a number of USB storage devices - a digital music player which has a 40GB HDD which shows as a removable USB drive in Windows, several flash drives, an external full size HDD (250GB, Western digital).

My laptop has 1 internal HDD partitioned to C: and D: The DVD-RW is E:

Recently when I plugged in my music player to transfer some songs, it wasn't recognised in Windows Explorer/My Computer. The green "safe removal" icon appeared in the system tray, but no drive icon in Explorer.

I checked Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management and the drive appeared there with the correct next available lette (F: ) It said "healthy" but when I right-clicked to try and open it I got the error message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer".

I have got around the problem by assigning another drive letter, but I have also found that other devices that are assigned F: (as the first "free" letter) by the system when plugged into the USB port (like another USB key) don't work in a similar way, until I manually reassign them a different letter.

What is wrong with F: ?? Is there anything I can do to let it work?

Or do I just need to use the other letters and thank my lucky stars there is a way round it!!

A:Solved: F: drive letter not working (suddenly) for removable storage

OK a long time after the original post, but ... better late than never:

There is a registry key that had been created called NoViewOn Drive in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

It restricts access to drives based on the binary value (1=A: drive, 4=C:, 32=F: etc)

I deleted this key , rebooted and now it works!

Ok -

Hoping someone can help out with this. I had a perfectly running Windows Server 2008 with 5 laptops, 8 Windows 7 Domain Users. Only problem was the the Server 2008 Enterprise was an upgrade from 2003, which left a lot of artifacts on the server. Since this was a home install, I figured good time to wipe the server and have a 'clean' 2008 *R2* install. I had several backups on an external 1TB drive so I was set. Also good opportunity to learn more about the new Windows Backup from a recovery standpoint.

Ran install from DVD, wiped drive, resetup the entire server.... GREAT! Only had a few accounts/groups, so reset them up manually, then restored all my GPOs, users/shared files and folders and profiles (\\SERVERNAME\PROFILES$)... Again, so far GREAT.

Now to the clients - Several Windows 7 laptops... not so great - all had each of the users' roaming profiles loaded so thought I could just login and everything would be working, no? I mean I had the same server name, IP, file structure, etc., etc. NO! Had to rejoin all the PCs to the Domain - Ok, no biggy for 8 PCs.

So onto the current problem... On any laptop, any domain user, Windows 7 logs in (Preparing Desktop...), then immediately logs out - back to the user/password screen... any Laptop, any User - same deal. If I create a new user profile, i.e. blow away both the <<username>> and <<username.V2>> folders on the server and let the OS recreate, everything is fine. Well, I don't want to bl... Read more

A:Windows 7 Logon with Immediate Logoff (2008 AD Domain)

An ideal place to try Process Monitor and it's logging feature.
The log can become huge - so be careful!

First run it normally to see if it logs anything of note in the short time between logon and logoff.
If that doesn't work we'll have to find the instructions to have it run on boot.

It's free here: Process Monitor

Hi

I have just installed my 1st PC with windows 7 on my network which has a 2008 datacentre server as a Domain controller. When I try to add the PC onto the domain I get the error message:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "***":
An attempt to resolve the DNS name of the domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach the DNS server that can resolve the DNS names in the target domain.

My DNS server is a Billion router that is also the DHCP server the domain controller does not handle these to roles. What is happening why can I not add this to the domain. The only other PC's on the domain are using XP SP3 which with same settings have no issues.

Anyone else having these sort of issues? Please help!

Cheers

I recently purchased a new Windows 8.1 computer for use in our organization.  The default logon option for the device is for a Microsoft Account (the default username field prompt is for an e-mail address, rather than for a username.)  However,
I would prefer that the default logon option be for a Windows domain account logon, so that users don't have to click the "Sign-in options" link and select "Local or domain account password" each time they need to log onto the computer.
I have learned that setting the "Interactive logon:  Do not display last user name"
policy (located under Computer Configuration / Policies / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options) to
Disabled allows the domain logon option to be retained across sessions.  However, I would prefer to keep this option set to Enabled so that the previous user name is not displayed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how the default logon option can be forced to a domain logon, while still suppressing the display of the last username?

A:Windows 8.1 Group Policy to Force Domain Logon as Default?

Hi Arowitv,
According to your description, we can use the following policy to check the result.
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options:
Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts
Click this option, and select" Users can't add or log on with Microsoft account"
Note: Selecting this option might make it impossible for an existing administrator on this computer to log on and manage the system.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon :Assign default domain for logon
Set the option to Enabled, and add the Default Logon domain.
Hope this helps.

I'm the IT for our company and I've ran into an issue. Recently upgraded from 2003 to 2008 and I'm moving everyone to it. The older model PC's I can pull off and put back on easily and run the .bat script and they are good to go. However the newer PC's in the office are getting an error when I go to put them back on the domain.

Everyone in the office needs to be ready by monday, (today is Friday) So Its urgent I figure this out so they can get to work monday.

Here is the error I get.

Huge Thanks in advance for anyone that can help, this looks like something I should be able to figure out but I just can't I've tried all I can.
