I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

I have problem with my Ideapad U510. Taken to a shop. It could be a fan problem or could be a hard drive problem or both. My U510 has 24GB SSD + 1 TB HD (I think it is WD). The OS was Win8 which I upgraded to Win8.1 within days I received the laptop.Have 2 questions:Q1/  Can the hard drive swap out and replaced by a new drive? In other word, will the existence of the 24GB SSD posed a problem in this swapping?Q2/ The HD is 1TB. Googling the spec for U510, there is an old pdf from Lenovo saying this laptop support 500GB, 750GB to 1TB HD. If the original drive is the source of problem and I have to replace it, does anyone know whether I can replace the original 1TB drive with a 2TB drive?  Also, the original HD spins at 5400rpm, can U510 accepts HD with spinning speed of 7200rpm? Thanks in advance.Sorcerer

I have the 10.6" little red 100s Ideapad with Win 10. It comes with a 32GB eMMC SSD and I thought that would be sufficient, as it is a 2nd system for me. I have a 'workhorse' Dell laptop that I use at work and home and I bought this to take to class and travelling, etc. I really thought I could get away with the smaller drive. I put a large micro SD card in and keept many of my files in the cloud, but I am still running out of space. I would like to replace the SSD with a larger one, like 120 GB, nothing too huge. Can it be removed from this system easily? What is the size of the drive, the specs, what can I buy to match it? or is it even possible? Thanks

A:100S-11IBY Laptop (ideapad) Hard Drive Replacement

Good day and welcome to the community.
Looking at the hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_100s_11_iby_hmm_201509.pdf there is no place to install any kind of SSD. The 32GB of eMMC (embedded MultiMedia Card) storage is soldered to the system board. There appear to also be 64GB variants of the system board, so that's the maximum.
Hope this helps to clarify.

Recently my computer has been occasionally freezing while I've been browsing online. It doesn't actually get to the point of BSOD but programs will stop working and I eventually won't be able to close or open anything, including task manager.

I tried running CHKDSK to see if that could fix things, (it has crashed since then unfortuantely), doing so somehow filled up my hard drive. I went from having around 700 GB free to only having a couple hundred MBs free. I tried this two more times.

I've attached the dump log as requested as well as the three logs of the CHKDSK that I found in event viewer.

I'm replacing the screen on my Y580 and I was wondering which LCDs I can use. I used the part number N156HGE-LA1 to search for new screens, but I found out that screen model is used in other laptops besides Y580 (such as HPs). That made me doubt whether it would work in my laptop or not. So then I tried another number from the screen: 209945U That one seems to be exclusive to the Y580. I found that screen for sale, but it's more expensive. Will the N156HGE-LA1 screen work for me even though Amazon is saying it's for a different laptop, or will I have to use the 209945U screen instead?  Also, is there a certain brand someone could direct me to which makes this screen and you know is good quality? Thanks so much. - Brian

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Greetings! While I do understand that on Y580 there is no hardware button available for the thermal management software, I do not understand why this software is not included in the drivers. To use it, should I install the energy management drivers for another Y model? Is that recommended at all, or are there risks? Please advise on how I can enable thermal management safely for my IdeaPad Y580. If that cannot be done, please give instructions on setting up SpeedFan or some other fan control software. Thank you. Best regards,S

Does anyone actually know if the "Dust Removal" in the energy management program actually works to remove dust from the laptop? I'm a bit reluctant to open up and dissect my laptop to check for any dust accumulation at this point, since everything has been running fine. This question came to mind since I saw that the filter at the bottom of my laptop was kinda caked in fine dust - wondered if the same was inside my laptop. I got the laptop in December 2012.

A:Dust removal in Ideapad Y580

hi marshchen,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
That application can only minimized collection of dust in the Exhaust system of your Laptop.
Since the process of the vents is to get air fom the outside to pass through the heatsink . Dust collection cannot really be avoided.
One symptom of a fan and vent dust is that when the vents blow very hot and minimal air and the laptop is heating up more than usual.
A yearly cleaning would be ok.
You can refer to the Maintenance Manual of this model on how to open the cover and get to the heat sink.
You might also want to refresh and apply new Thermal paste to the Heat sink.
Just be careful on the plastic parts and also wear an anti static starp. If you're not comfortable doing this, You can opt to have a repair center do this.
Best Regards

Hey everyone, I have a question regarding my Ideapad Y580 and a strange sound error I have been experiencing over the past few months. Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Centeri7 3630QM8GB RAMGTX660M500GB Samsung EVO 840 Ok here's the sound issue.  After using a program such as Minecraft, VLC, Nightingale, the sound will completely cut out.  When checking volumes, sound will not register.  Oftentimes, the sound control panel will say the device is busy. Things I've tried so far:1) Disabled Realtek Digital Output2) Installed latest driver3) Checked current processes for remnants of programs using the sound card.. nothing. Sometimes when I have one of the programs open, for example playing minecraft, when I start a video in VLC, there will be no sound.  The only sound comes from the game. The only thing that really restores the audio is a full restart of the system.  Logging out and back in will not restore the sound.Has anyone experienced this issue?  Is there a way to fix this problem?  Thanks guys!

A:Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out

One suggestion..... have you tried uninstalling the audio driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy of the driver.  If the previous driver installation was faulty, installing the latest driver may have not corrected the problem.

My original HD is going bad so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD. I've read more forums and watched more videos then I would have liked and I still can't find anything that can walk me through this. I want my mSATA to be configured like my original HD with a C: and D: partition and it to be able to run one button recovery and everything else that the original HD was able to do. Then I want the replacement disk HD to be just for storage. My computer did not come with an mSATA originally. It does have Intel Rapid Storage Technology but I can not find RapidTool.exe which some of the forums say is needed.

If your old HD is still operating, you should be able to clone it using the steps shown below.   Be warned that you must clone the whole drive, including all the hidden partitions, and can only resize the Windows Partition or the OKR recovery will not work, so the new m.2 SSD must be large enough to hold the entire contents of all the partitions of your existing HD drive.    Use Windows Drive Manager to view the sizes of the other parititons on your HD> If you need to make room, back up all your data and then delete from the current OS drive partition before cloning. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/install-m2-ssd-lenovo-t440s Read this thread as well, it points out some important rules that must be followed when cloning so thaat OKR will work afterwards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Enable-onekey-recovery-after-HDD-to-SSD-cloning... Hope that helps, and good luck

Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... A:Ideapad Y580 Black screen with cursor

Hi cablecons,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
We would need to isolate the the stage where it causes the issue.
Making the BIOS appear onscreen is a good sign that the sytemboard is functional and we can continue on possible issue with the harddrive or software/drivers.
Here is the hardware manual for parts removal guide.
To start, unplug the charger and remove the battery. Press and hold down the power button (12 seconds) to drain flea power. Connect the AC charger and press the One key recovery button (item6 page 71) and check how it goes.

This supposes to power on the laptop and shows Novo menu.
If same black screen then disconnect the charger and remove the harddrive, press the power button down for 12 seconds. and turn on using the same One key recovery button.
Update us how it goes.

Hi, I have an IdeaPad Y580 with Windows 10 Pro. The battery is 10.8V, 72Wh, 6700mAh / 11.1V 6200 mAh. The battery indicator in Windows was showing something like "65% not charging" the whole time. I went to Lenovo's "Energy Management" tool and started "Battery Gauge Reset".The software said this will completely charge and discharge the battery and I should not use the laprop in the meantime, so I left it running the whole day. When I came back the machine was hanging: screen was dark, the keyboard did not respond. The power button was lit up, but did not react on normal push. I pushed it longer for a forced shutdown and voila. The laptop is now dead. It does not start. When I press the power button, the battery indicator LED blinks 3 times in orange and stops. The only way to start the laptop is to remove the battery, unplug the power supply from mains and shorten the mains lead to discharge any capacitors. Moreover, decided to measure the voltage coming out of the power supply with the battery in the laptop - the connecting leads i used went really hot within seconds and the voltage dropped from 19.5 to under 18.5V. I am not sure what is going on, but either the charging circuit or the battery is overloading the power supply. Any help?

Is it possible to buy a New Hard drive that fits my Laptop. Would this make my Laptop boot up and start or do I need to fork out and get another?

If so how do I get a Hard Drive that I know will (fit in my laptop) with my Laptop.

Really need some help here!

After sending in my new 750 GB Western Digital Black Edition hard drive due to my partitions getting completely screwed multiple times. I received a brand new replacement 1 TB Western Digital Black Edition hard drive yesterday. Everything was working fine until I turned on my desktop on today and received the message "operating system not found". This is the same problem I got with my older hard drive. I tried everything, including creating a new partition using the command prompt on my old hard drive and I still had the same problem. I haven't tried anything yet with my new hard drive and I'm wondering what is causing my hard drives to do this? Any ideas of what could be causing this and fixes would be immensely appreciated. Thank you for your time.

-Not posting this from my desktop.
-Both drives are OEM and I do not have any discs with to run a diagnostics or repairs.
-I can not start up Windows in anyway.
-I still have my Windows 7 64 bit disc.
-My computer does not recognize my hard drive due to the partition being corrupted.

I seriously do not understand why I can not find an answer to this question. I need to clone my drive because it is failing. The oem drive is connected and only answered to it's own motherboard. Got it. My drive is failing. I need a new drive installed. I want the whole drive coppied/cloned so I can just slap the new drive in it and have it fire up with it's own original oem purchased licensed copy of windows. Why is this so hard to find an answer too?
I also do not understand why there are so many partitions. Been building computers for years and working on them. Why would you need more than the oem partition and a backup area for idiots plus the main drive? Seriously?
Anyways, don't me to be a jerk. It's jut frustrating that I can not get an answer.

A:Hard drive replacement

Whether you can clone the drive or not depends upon how it's failing.  If there are bad clusters on the drive, most cloning utilities will fail -- you can try a chkdsk /r, which will attempt to recover data from the bad clusters and move it to good ones, and then try the cloning.
Newer systems with UEFI support use a GPT drive structure -- yes, there are multiple system partitions that are required for the UEFI setup to function - and there are recovery partitions on the drive as well.
The bottom line is that the answers you seek depend on the system model, how it's set up, whether the drive is secured with bitlocker, etc., and on how it's failing.

Please could somebody help me with my probelm. I took my hard drive out of my Dell Inspiron 530s as it was full and took ages to load so wanted to buy a new one, of course not making any backup ha. Once i buy a new harddrive, what software would i need to buy to make my PC run as normal again. I was running with Windows Vista before, so what Software package do i require as the only ones that i seem to find are upgrades of which is no use as im starting from scratch as such. Do i need to make a boot disk first?

The hard drive failed on the laptop. I'd like to replace the drive and found the replacement part in the HP PartSurfer, although, it appears to be out of stock. My question is:  If I purchase the official replacement part, will the operating system come with it? Or will I have to purchase a new OS for the computer?

A:replacement hard drive

HI. Not the hard disk comes without system, you can do a dump that if you are not an advanced user it will be difficult, you install the hard disk and request the recovery disks of your system and equipment, this would be simpler or animated I leave a Link where he explains how to achieve a migration without reinstalling the system, all this if your previous disk is in good condition.  http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

I have to buy a new hard drive for my desk top. The one that was in it was a Seagate Barracuda 3.5" 7200.12 1TB ST31000524AS. I broke the plastic on it where the power or data cord plugs in, so it won't work now.

I want to replace it with a 2 Seagate Hard drives, a 1TB & a 2TB so I can back up on one. My motherboard is a MSI A75MA-G55 & I know it will accommodate more than one hard drive, possibly more than 2, I'm just not sure how to install them in sequence. Would I be better off to buy a 2TB hard drive & and external drive for backups?

How important is the rest of the info on the hard drive, such as Site Code, Firmware, etc. I want to make sure that I get the right replacements that are compatible.

Also, I hope to be able to install Windows 7 & I have an ISO file that I put on a flash drive. Not sure how to install Win 7 on a new hard drive b/c I have no idea how it will find the other info on my computer.

Older data regarding my PC (current updates not showing, etc.) can be found here: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Q...2IIVHBanlZexZN

How important are the #'s on a hard drive when buying 2, possible a 2TB & a 1TB, or maybe 3 to put my operating system on a separate hard drive.

I don't see how a clean installation on Windows 7 will find all the items in my device manager....can't see how this works with a new install. So, after installing new hard drives (1-3) &/or an external drive for backups, I don't know ... Read more

A:Hard Drive Replacement for PC

You would be better off getting one HDD to put in your computer and an external one for your backups (actually two external HDDs for backups would be much better since even a backup HDD can fail without warning but only one is better than none). The external HDDs should be connected to your computer only when updating the backups; they should not be permanently connected.

Using an internal HDD for backups is a bad idea because the same thing that can cause data to be lost on the main drive can also take out the data on an internal backup drive.

If you can swing it, I prefer using the Western Digital (WD) Blacks for internal drives. WD has a better reputation than Seagate for drive reliability and customer service. I've had only six Seagates; two died within a year and a third, a SSHD, was a disappointment performancewise. Of the 23 WD drives I've had, only two have failed; one other one arrived DOA (which could have been caused by rough handling in shipment), which the vendor promptly replaced and now is humming away in my machine happy as a kitten under a leaky cow.

If you are going to run your OS and programs on a HDD, I wouldn't get a third one; you can just put them on a partition on your one internal HDD separate from a data partition. The only way I would recommend a separate drive for the OS and programs is if you were going to upgrade to an SSD. An SSD will give you lightning fast boot times and program access and is an upgrade that will give you more bang for y... Read more

See if you have any rubber feet on the base of that laptop. Remove the feet, and find your screws (most likely).

I want to replace the SATA HDD in my Dell Dimension 4700 with a larger SATA drive, but I don't want to start from scratch because I only have the Dell restoration WinXP Prof CD, not the retail version. Is there a way I can "clone" the present drive? What hardware and software would I need? I once did this with Maxtor IDE drives, using Maxblast. But I think that only works with Maxtor drives. I haven't yet bought the HDD, so I don't know what brand I'll be dealing with. Also, there's only 1 SATA connector inside the computer, so I guess one of the drives will have to connect via USB. Any help here will be appreciated. Thank you.

Attach the new one to your system, then run some software like Norton Ghost to copy the old drive to the new one. Remove old drive after.

This morning I received a warning that HARD DRIVE FAILURE IMMINENT.  I want to replace the drive ASAP.I currently have a 3TB 7200RPM SATA 6G 3.5 hard driveI also have 16GB disc cache SSD.Is this cache part of the hard drive?I have been looking at Seagate SSHD 4TB (64M cache) as the replacement.

A:Hard Drive replacement

The SUPPORT PAGE for that model indicates that a 4TB drive is an option, so it seems resonable that you can replace the failing 3TB with a 4TB.  Since the 16GB is being used for a cache, it might be prudent to clone the failing drive to the new one, and do it outsie of the computer.  IMHO, to avoid problems, clone the drive with the Seagate cloning software using a different computer and USB to SATA adapters.http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/acronis_true_image_seagate_edition_software_(discwizard).htm...
