Preferred Solution: how does x230 power option with battery charge threshold affect performance when plugged in?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not sure where I'd submit a bug report, has anyone else experienced the following? I have my charging thresholds set to 80% in Lenovo Companion for my T470. However, it seem like half the time it will end up charging one or both batteries to 100%. What seems to happen is it charges to 80%, and it might sit there for a little while, and then a battery creeps to 81%, at which point it then gets charged to 100%. I'm assuming the code behind the threshold portion of the program is saying if charge == threshold rather than if charge >= threshold to determine when to cut the charging off.

My machine type: 20BS.  I?ve downloaded and installed the latest Lenovo Power Management Driver, n20ku12w_x64.exe, for my machine, but the "Battery Charge Threshold? function is not there.  What happened to the "Battery Charge Threshold" function that used to be part of the Lenovo Vantage, Power Settings?  The battery icon on the Task Bar shows shows 100% charge along with the power plug symbol, which I assume means that the battery is being charged.

My P51 battery is set to start charging when below 80% and stop charging at 95%.  (Lenovo Companion> Hardware Settings> Power> Battery Charge Threshold> Start Charging When Below 80%> Stop Charging at 95%).  I have my P51 plugged in all the time.  The battery always stays at 95% charged, it never reduces down to below 80% and then automatically recharges back up to 95%.  Obviously the P51 will run the battery down when unplugged and then when plugged back in it will recharge back up to 95% capacity and stay there. My older T530 had the same settings as my new P51 does but it honors the charging perameters  set by the T530's Lenovo Companion's Charging Threshold....The battery charge gradually reduces to below 80% and then it automatically recharges back up to 95%...Thus "exercising the battery".                       My question is two fold...1.  Why doesn't the P51 perform the same way that the T530 does using the same Charging Thresholds?2.  Isn't it beneficial for a Lithium Battery to vary it's charge vs. staying charged always at the same level? Curious...Altoid666

A:P51 Battery Charge Threshold

My guess is that the power management works the same.  Probably, the T530's cells are slowly losing charge over time and when it gets below 80% it charges.  The new battery cells probably lose charge also, but MUCH more slowly.  When it gets below 80%, it will charge.  If you want to vary the charge level, unplug it for a few minutes, occasionally.  I think Lithium cells degrade over time, but I think the degredation speed has more to do with ambient temperature and number of recharge cycles.

I've been troubleshooting slightly higher than expected power usage on my P70. Yesterday, the Lenovo Settings app Battery Charge Threshold displayed a slider that I could adjust.To-day, it does not. There was both a "Runtime Application Reconfiguration" for the Lenovo Power Manager to-day and Lenovo System Interface Driver install/reconfiguration mentioned in the Reliability Monitor. I'm looking at a battery that's sitting at 75% (not charging)- when it should be charging to 80%.Any ideas? I'd like to have a charging threshold.

Hi,  I have an X1 yoga gen 2 since a bit more than a year, I like this laptop but to be honest there are a few annoying quirks. Pen not working properly since day one, keys marking the screen, disappointing battery, but that not why I am posting today, since the last 6 months, when then pushed the vantage software the battery threshold setting are not really saved, it works for a day or two and then revert back to off, charging the battery to 100%. I read it happen for other people after reaching 0% battery but that is never my case as I rarely go under 20%  Any help would be appreciated. I am now out of warranty, so I would like to keep the battery healthy?

Hi there, I just got my new Thinkpad X1 Tablet (gen3) and got some problem when using Battery Charge Threshold in the Lenovo Vantage app. I have set the Threshold to stop charging at 80% and start charging again at 75%. It works at first, for a few days I guess, and suddenly during the lunch time today, I locked the X1 Tablet (battery level 78%), going out for lunch, then I come back and the battery level is 100%. I then opened the Lenovo Vantage app to check, and Battery Charge Threshold is disabled. I have no idea completely, why this settings was messed up, I didn't open the Lenovo Vantage app and the setting was cleared. Can anyone help? Hi. I'm having issues with my battery threshold option. I want the battery to stop charging when it reaches 80%. However, it will never keep the setting on forever. I randomly find out that it charges the battery to 100% instead of stopping at 80%. This is most likely to happen when my Thinkpad P50 is turned off and is charging. Although, it is not every time that it simply charges to 100% instead. Can someone help me figure out why on earth it keeps turning the battery threshold option completely off? I want to have the option on permanently so that my battery will live longer. Best regards,Jesper

My X230 powers down when I try to operate it with a battery connected.  I've tried replacing the battery, but it continues to power down even with the replacement.  I tried changing the power management settings to not shut down while plugged in if the battery gets critically low, but that didn't fix the problem either.  It doesn't shut down when I run it on just AC power without a battery plugged in.  This would be fine, but I need to run a BIOS update to fix a different issue I'm having, and I can't do that until I have a full battery connected that isn't going to cause it to shut down during the update.

I have a HP 2000- 2d19wm series laptop. It has 8 gb of ram, 250 gb hard drive, running Windows 7 Home Premium Service pack 1. AMD E300 1.30 Ghz processor.
The problem is that it is not detecting or connecting to wifi networks around it.
The battery on this thing is dead. It would indicate over a long period of timie (weeks) , connected but not charging and go down in percent slowly from xx percent till it ended up totally empty to the point where it said, "no battery is detected". Laptop powers and and does all other functions but wifi indicator has a red X through it. Won't pick up ANY networks even after restarts and even a couple of system restores back to dates when wifi WAS working. I used my Android smartphone and it fully detects and connects to the networks in that area so it is the laptop that's "blind" and "insensitive", not the networks. Also, maybe a causal connection but it never had this problem till the battery was totally dead (it is now plugged and starts up directly like a desktop). Could the dead battery be the cause of the wifi not working or am I three bases off to outfield here? Thanks!

I have an XPS 9550 6th Gen running Windows 10 (Just over 1 year, out of warranty).
The issue is when the charge plug is plugged in and hovering over the battery icon it says that battery is charging.  However the battery is not charging but discharging until the laptop switches off.  The only way for the battery to charge again is to deplete the battery until the laptop is unresponsive when the power button is pushed to switch lap top on.  Once there is no residual power in the battery it will start charging again to 100% after which the cycle repeats, discharge.
Things I have tried.
Latest Bios update - no change
Another A/C charger - worked ok for a few days
Replaced battery - no change
Bios settings - reset to default (info related to battery and A/C charge reports all good)
F12 - Dell diagnostics, reports all good
When Battery is disconnected the laptop works normally
The laptop charge socket seems tight and secure
I have searched the internet exhaustively but have not found this same issue reported.  The only feasible way I can use the laptop is to disconnect the battery.
Can anyone suggest anything?
I would also like to disable the battery instead of having to open it up to disconnect, is this possible?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
Andrew

Hi.

I am shopping for a good gaming laptop and would like to know if there are any disadvantages to having a G-Sync display on a laptop? Does it have any significant impact on battery life of the laptop? Does having G-Sync display on a laptop mean that the integrated GPU is completely disabled and so all apps including non-graphics intensive ones run on the discrete GPU?
Also, would using a UHD 4K display in combination with G-Sync affect battery life?

My battery all of a sudden won't charge. The computer works with remaining battery (when AC is not plugged in). The computer works with the battery removed when plugged in. But if battery is in and the computer is plugged into the outlet, it does not charge the battery, nor does it recognize that it is plugged in. It only tries to run on the remaining battery. WHen the battery is in and the computer is using the AC adapter, I get a blinking white light next to the plug for the AC adapter. I have two separate batteries, and it is doing the same thing on both batteries. I have tried deleting the  Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and the Microsoft AC Adapter in the Device Manager section. It didn't fix my problem. I also used HP Support Assistant's HP Battery Check diagnostic tool. It says my "battery is functioning correctly, but the AC adapter is not attached. To completely test your battery, please attache the AC Adapter." The strange thing is, my AC adapter is plugged in, but the computer thinks it is not attached. So it is not recognizing my AC adapter when the battery is in. But does recognize and use the AC adapter when the battery is removed.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a fix? Thank you!

I checked temp and thats fine (35 C). I am really wondering what it could be, the power supply is enough (420W) but it isnt like a great brand, still though I dont think that should make it be this bad....

A poor output or failing power supply will cause the computer to shut down or crash, but not to "go slow"

Do vista power settings on laptops affect just the screen brightness and when it turns off, or does it effect performance itself, such as the processor speed? If they do affect processor speed, by approximately how much (i.e. a percentage).

I'm running a dell xps 1330 with 2gb ram and 2.2 Ghz processor.

Thanks as always,

A:Does changing power settings actually affect performance?

On computers that have processors with SpeedStep (Intel) or Cool'n'Quiet (AMD) it will clock down the CPU when not under load. It can also power down hard drives, etc. It will not slow a computer down in regards to performance.

Edit- You want max battery on your laptop though and having the higher power setting over performance will keep your laptop cooler as well.

I have tried to adjust the battery charging thresholds for my L720 using Power Manager 8. The idea is to preserve the battery by charging only between 46% and 50%. The system accepts these settings and shows them when the pointer hovers over the power manager in the toolbar, but forgets them every time the computer goes into standby or hibernation. This makes the settings pointless. I am running Windows 10 and believe that both Windows and the power manager are the latest versions available.

I have now noticed that the battery charging thresholds disappear even while the computer is being used, not just when it goes into standby or hibernation.

I have two Lenovo Y40-70 computers that I purchased within a couple weeks of each other.  They came with Windows 8.1 but I upgraded to Windows 10. A few months ago, I noticed that my computer battery meter was reading 100% for an hour.  I continued to work unplugged until the battery died while still reading 100%.  I recharged and the battery again read 100% for more than a couple hours, then died.  So the battery lifetime is as good as always, but the reading is not right.  When I reboot, it still reads 100%. Strangely, the second system, whcih I had not used for a while, was OK, but a few days later, it started doing the same thing (though it was reading 87%, the charge when the computer last worked right.  I suscpect that this happened after a critical update, which the second system went through later. Recently, I downloaded from the Lenovo website the newer power management software on both computers, and it did not help. Then I noticed the Battery recall so downloaded the "Lenovo Battery Utility 2015" to see if my system was afffected by the problem.  When I run the utility, I get the mssage "No Battery Detect."  So it would appear that there may be an issue with the software detecting the batter. Since I can't know the state of the battery (it appears to not want to recharge until it's empty, I gues because it thinks it's 100% charged), I cannot count on this computer when it's not plugged in. Now I ... I'm currently getting extremely low power on the downstream ( -1.6 dBmV) but I have a pretty good SNR (39.1 dB). The main problem I have with my computer is that streaming video gets constant buffering at times and sometimes downloads degrade over time (start out fast then get slower sometimes down to almost nothing). I have went wired, wireless, with router and without yet the same thing happens. I swapped modems with my sister who lives on the same street and has the same service and it doesnt affect anything either.

Here are her modem signals compared to mine:

Hers

SNR 33.2dB

Upstream
Power Lvl 54.5dBmV

Mine
Downstream
SNR 39.0 dB
Power Lvl-2.0 dBmV
Upstream

here is my speed and ping test results:

With results like that it looks like everything is fine, I cant put my finger on the problem. Could it be soemthing outside at the pole?

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."

Shockingly none worked that I found.

Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.

A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.

To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)

Worked with an off brand battery also.

Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.

Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.

Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

Hi,

I have a Lenovo Z50-70 running Windows 8.1. The laptop is relatively new, bought in Jan. 2015.

Some time ago, the original battery suddenly started to have a problem where it would say 45% available, plugged in, not charging. No matter what fixes I tried (after looking through a lot of articles, posts, comments, etc.), nothing made the battery start charging again. It always stays at 45%. Also the battery light/indicator on the front of the laptop is always blinking white.

So I got a new battery, put it in hoping that it would work and charge up to 100%, but the new battery is having exactly the same problem as the original old one! It will only charge up to 45%, then it says plugged in not charging. The battery light is again always blinking white.

What do I do? How can this be fixed? What's going on?

Appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

check the warranty is still active, as thats one route you could take with a relatively new laptop.

also, try uninstalling the energy management and restart the system and check for the issue. also try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI from the device manager and restart the system and check for the issue. for more info on this action see this thread in the link:

In the last few days I will have my laptop on with it plugged into the AC Adapter which is going straight to a wall outlet, after a couple of hours, my laptop turns off.  On closer inspection, I realsie that the battery is not charging.  I have to shut down my laptop and let if charge for a few hours, and then work on it.  But it won't charge while I am working with it plugged into the outlet.  I have read up about Windows 10 being a possibility of be the cause, so I do a battery uninstall, and rebooted the laptop, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.  What I am missing here? Thanks in Advance

I have an IdeaPad 500.  The A/C charger is "plugged in" and the icon says it is "charging" but there is no charge to the battery, which is now at 53% (it was 55% yesterday).   I have gone to the forum and done what they suggest (e.g. turned off the Conservation Mode).  Unlike most questions on the forum, my system says "charging" rather than "not charging".  And because it is an IdeaPad, I cannot remove the battery (at least not without opening up the case).  I am a bit worried this is a hardware/battery failure -- but I hope this forum might give me a software fix

Thanks in advance

Hello all, I made a post regarding the performance/failing of one of my hard drives

The conclusion we came to has unfortunately not resolved my problem and I am beginning to think my Power Supply may be the culprit

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before I go into details here is my current Hardware:

Q6600 @ 3.0GHZ
GIGABYTE EP45-DS3R
6GB PC2 6400 800mhz (2x 2gb/2x 1gb)
Nvidia GTX 275 896mb (requires 2x 6 pin power adapters)
Asus Xonar 7.1 soundcard (requires floppy power adapters)
Windows 7 x64
Jeantech 1000W PSU (modular PSU. 4 PCI-E nodes and 8 nodes for other devices...)
++
500gb HDD (operating system)
1tb HDD (data)
1tb HDD (data)
2tb HDD (data - added recently)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My original problem (in brief)

Upon accessing certain files in one of my 1TB drives, I hear a distictive "click/lockup/halt" sound and then the entire system crashes (first the drive will become inaccessible, then windows explorer will crash, followed by the mouse and eventually a BSOD after a minute)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought a new 2TB a month ago to replace what then I thought was a failing 1TB drive. Since, the problems have become "random" and happen across all four drives (1tb, 1tb, 500gb, 2tb)

I am now considering my PSU the cul... Read more

A:Faulty power supply affect hard drive/computer performance?

a 1000Watt shouldn't have any problem coping with the components that you have, i would recommend that u borrow a power supply from a friend and try it out on your computer, maybe the power supply is old and is not supplying proper voltages on all the rails....
