Disc cleanup slow

Q: Disc cleanup slow

Disc cleanup is slow calculating lately (Windows XP Home Edition) even when it turns out there is little to cleanup. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Disc cleanup slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Disc cleanup slow

Hello Julie Frances

Is it hanging at "Compress Old Files"?
If so, try this fix
Go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.
"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Line 48 right hand side
Just click on the words "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" NOT the underscored word "Undo"

You could try using CCleaner but do not use the registry cleaner. Just clean out all the temp/old files

You can try Ccleaner, it is in the down load section.  You will have to check the boxes that remove them, you should take note of at least the last ten events.

It will not work at all, it just freezes up saying compress old files.I tried checking for volume errors, but it did nothing. It just seizes up. If anyone has any suggestions at all, I would like to hear them.

A:Disc Cleanup will not run

I had this problem before and used the following which resolved the issue.

1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches

3. Right click "Compress Old Files" folder and select "Export" and save.
4. Then delete all entries in the "Compress Old Files" folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup
7. Import previous exported keys (by doubleclicking on exported .reg file)

I have a Compac Presario 2100 laptop. I have been using my disc cleanup for quite awhile. It helps my computer to run faster. This morning, I went to use it, i was able to get it to delete all that I wanted it to except webclient/publisher temporary files. How can I get it to delete, whats on it? I hope that you can understand this. Like I said in my introductory post, I am a novice. So I hope that I explained it all right. Thank you and have a great day.

A:Disc Cleanup

I have done some research about this on some search engines, and what seems to be the case is that some portion of these (+/-32Kb) cannot be deleted. It was suggested somewhere that the 32Kb is a "place holder."In the grand scheme of things, 32Kb is probably not very important.Perhaps some other expert can come up with a definitive answer.Regards,John

I can't get the disc cleanup to complete its program after I click on it.

The window started, and showed 4 green bars but never completed and did not show any stats of what it was doing.

Also, I can't seem to find the temporary internet files when I get into find files or folders.

I'm running win xp, and in the program of scheduled cleanups I have disc cleanup and defrag where they should run weekly, but never do.

Any help as to troubleshooting these and getting them to work automatically would be appreciated.

What's the difference between Piriform's CCleaner and my computer's disc cleanup?

A:CCleaner vs. disc cleanup

Disk Clean up

Remove temporary Internet files.
Remove downloaded program files. For example, ActiveX controls and Java applets that are downloaded from the Internet.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
Remove Windows temporary files.
Remove optional Windows components that you are not using.
Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

- Temporary File Cache
- URL History
- Cookies
- Hidden Index.dat files
- Last download file location
-Recycle Bin
-Windows Temporary files
-Windows Log files
-Recent Documents (on the Start Menu)
-Run history (on the Start Menu)
-Windows XP Search Assistant history
-Windows XP old Prefetch data
-Windows memory dumps after crashes
-Chkdsk file fragments

Why not run both?

I am fully aware there is a way to run disc clean up from cmd line in windows 7.  My question is, is there a way to do it without the end-user knowing?  The goal is to run it and clean up files while the client continues to work without having to interrupt them.  We can run a cmd line without the client seeing, so ideally we could get disc clean up to run entirely in cmd line.  Is there any way of accomplishing this?

A:Running Disc Cleanup from cmd

I tried this, although not invisible, no input from enduser is needed.
[You may have to upfront explain what/why cleanmgr runs to enduser.]

There's more han one way to skin this cat.

1. System Restore Function. Reset the system to status at an earlier date...pre file deletions.

2. System File Checker (SFC). May replace the missing files?

3. Perform a Repair Install.

Google any of these options for additional information.

I am having problems with my scheduled task on Server 2003. It is a disc cleanup, and it is supposed to run everyday at 2 AM in the morning. The task was running fine until I added more tasks, but at different days at different times.

Here is some information:

Run: C:\WINDOWS.1\system32\cleanmgr.exe /d D: /sagerun:50
Start in: C:\WINDOWS.1\system32
Run as: HOTELMARIO\SilverdaleA (password set)

Task will stop after 10 minutes if something fails. Under security I have:

Administrator (HOTELMARIO\Administrator)
Administrators (HOTELMARIO\Administrators)
Keith Black ([email protected])

Everybody has "full" control. SilverdaleA is a under the Administrator group. Why do you think that Disc Cleanup has failed to start, and failed to delete temp files as well as recycling bin items?

Please, somebody help! Thank you!

Hi, someone in my house is doing a constant disc cleanup which makes me wonder what they are hiding. Also the history on internet explorer is wiped out all the time too. In disc cleanup I know I can look through the files and see what has been looked at previously. but with the cleaning it all the time I can no longer see as its all wiped out. Is there anyway to undo a disc cleanup?
Any help will be so very appreciated.

A:Can I Undo A Disc Cleanup?

Look in your recycle bin and see if anything is in there.

If you have kids, you may want to install a keylogger which puts its data in a protected folder. Then you can see where they were and what they did.

I don't know how serious this is, but I would like to find out.

Yesterday I decided to do the Disc Cleanup on my hard drive on my Laptop and while it was running I got this message:

"Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.
Insert your now."
^I'm guessing its asking to insert a windows installation CD, which didn't come with the computer, but it doesn't say what to insert.
There were 3 buttons "Retry", "More Information", and "Cancel". When I pressed the Retry I got "The CD you provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the into your CD-Drive." "More Information" gave me "Possible reasons for the problem: -You have inserted the wrong CD. -The CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning."
Since I don't have that CD, my only option was to press Cancel. Which told me: "You chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows Stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions?" So I pressed "Yes."

So my question is: Is this a big deal? Things seem to be working fine. Is there anything else I need to do?

Typically due to a bad driver, or faulty or incompatible hardware or software.
Have you installed anything "new"?
Is there a file name referenced with the error. e.g. nv4_disp.dll
You should update all drivers (from the oem web sites not windows update).
Also check your event viewer for additional info.

Then I used "Disk Cleanup" to remove the SP1 installation files and other temporary files.
After a few restarts, I got some USB problems. Peripherals started to work at USB 1 speed. Here's how the USB section of the Device Manager looks:

I restored the system partition a few times and I can say pretty confidently that using Disk Cleanup is the cause. Although I'm not sure if the problem is caused by removing SP1 files or some other temporary files.

Motherboard is an Asrock ALiveNF6G-VSTA. I'm also using a USB hub, but the problem (slower speed) happens on _all_ USB ports, both on the hub and directly on the motheboard.

When I get a new cumulative update I notice a lot of unnecessary files on C:\ so I run disc cleanup.
I do so before I create an image in case I have to recover the image in the future without all these unnecessary files which take forever to cleanup.
When the disc is cleaned up from windows updates I then create the image.
Why does this disc cleanup take so long and would you suggest a different approach to creating a clean image.

A:Disc cleanup in xp no longer works

This is a common problem. It is caused by a corrupt temp file. Cleaning all temp files manually will solve the problem. To run DC without cleaning temp files, go to Start > Run and type:

Navigate to:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Volumecaches\Compressoldfiles

Export the key and delete it. Run Disk Cleanup, then return the key. Some people say the key need not be returned. Get Windows Updates you may be missing, particularly the one related to catalog database corruption.

This problem disappeared on my computer, seemingly as a result of updates.
