ASUS ROG GL553V - Laptop shut down (thinks it is hot?!)

Q: ASUS ROG GL553V - Laptop shut down (thinks it is hot?!)

Hi All

(Windows 10)

Bit of a conundrum on my hands. My laptop ASUS ROG GL553V is powering off instantly and consistently within 10 - 30 seconds of being powered on. Some small amount of background:
Less than a year old (so could return for warranty);
Had an issue with the ASUS ROG Gaming Center spinning the fans up to 100% when gaming and causing the laptop to shut down automatically. This was rectified by uninstalling said software entirely. No issues for 2-3 months since;
The shut down doesn't occur when something particular happens, it is seemingly 'time based' (like it's overheating and if you see here: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthre...-Overheating-Throttling&highlight=speed+crash this is super common).

Instead, the laptop (cold as anything, no heat whatsoever) will shut down in bios, starting windows, logging in and sometimes I get 5-10 seconds of desktop time.

Putting it in the fridge netted me a small extension of time, but very very little. Just enough to see that the UEFI reports the CPU as 105c. HWM (briefly open) says the CPU is at a comfortable ~40.

Now obviously the CPU isn't 105c as I would absolutely be able to feel that melting a hole in the laptop, and HWM knows it's not. The UEFI is somehow detecting the CPU as 105c, and triggering a shut down. Now to me, the obvious solution was to update the UEFI via pen drive but I won't have enough time! And insofar as I understand, a halfway updated UEFI is a quick way to acquire an expensive brick.

Now as mentioned if I put it in the fridge I can get some small amount of time (god knows why this works) to do stuff in UEFI or super quick on desktop. Would anyone have a suggestion as to what I might do to stop the laptop from believing it is achieving nuclear fusion?

Thanks for any advice or help, and even answers to the nature of 'return it under warranty' would be fine.

Cheers

Chris

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. My keyboard stopped working out of the blue, and whenever I open the laptop it goes into tablet mode. Switching to laptop mode does not fix the keyboard issue. Any help?

A:Lenovo Yoga C930: Laptop switches modes randomly, sometimes thinks it's shut and just goes black!

Problem seems to have fixed itself, but I'm still worried. It's like something is making the laptop confused. Sometimes it doesn't know if it's in tablet mode, laptop mode, or closed. There's been times where the screen just shuts off, and I need to close and open the laptop again to get it to work. In fact, it was this that caused the issue in the first place. Is there anything that might be causing this system confusion?

This problem only started today.

When on the internet and I click on any link it opens in a new tab. So I'm ending up with lots of tabs open and I'm getting a bit .

When I open Word I get a dialogue box saying :
Word has detected that you are holding down the CTRL key. Do you want to start Word in safe mode.

Now, when I am in Word I can type Z, for eg, and I do get the letter Z and not the CTRL Z shortcut action of undo. The really annoying aspect of this problem in Word is that I cannot easily click on anything I've typed in order to edit it - rather than getting the cursor blinking at that one point I'll get a whole line or word highlighted, then have to click again (which works sometimes) or use the arrow keys to get the cursor somewhere thereabouts. This is making me because I do a bit of writing.

I run MSE anti-virus and just ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free) and it didn't detect any threats.

Hoping someone can help and many thanks in advance.

A:laptop thinks I'm holding down the control key

I tried turning the laptop off and on (again) and this time it seems to have cleared the problem, at least for now. Sorry for putting anyone out and wasting their time.

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio Vgn-s38gp Laptop that I have recently performed a recovery on to reset the system. Prior to starting this process all functions such as the inbuilt mouse, wireless etc all were working fine. Now the laptop has the software for all the functions but when I enter into device manager it is registered as a pc. It thinks that there is a usb connecting the keyboard to the system and that it doesn't have the facilities to use the wireless internet.

Is there any way to change my system back to registering as a laptop? I have had this problem in the past (many years ago when we did a system recovery then) but can't remember how we got around this.

Please help!

My laptop has in the last 24 hours become convinced it's end-Aug 2815 and keeps altering the time and date to tell me so. I can change it back, and it "sticks" with the correct time for a short while (but less than an hour) then changes itself back to 2815 again. I've checked for malware and viruses and not found anything, but the problem persists. Any ideas, anyone?

Hello, I just registered here in hopes that you could help me, I own an alienware area 51 m7700 (never buy one, they SUCK)

it has given me problems left and right,, it comes with media center 2005, it crashed whenever I was watching video etc... so I finaly decided to purchase a separate windows XP profesional disk, formated my pc and installed it.

I had to install driver by driver manualy as windows didn't recognize anything by itself and I mean everything even the network adaptor. I had to use my mom's laptop to download a driver for my computer in order to go online.

Now finaly everything seems to be alright, I dont have media center anymore but this seems to be better.

Anyway, this is the MAIN problem I now have.... this new windows I installed is treating my laptop as a desktop.. no battery meter, no automatic shutdown (i have to press the power button after i click shutdown in windows) etc...

on top of this, I cannot for my life configure my card reader, this alienware pc has a 7-1 (or something like that) internal card reader but windows xp is recognizing it as a printer lpt port or something and alienware has no drivers for this because they say windows should recognize it by itself which is BS cos my windows isnt recognizing it.

to top everything off I was trying to make a partition with partition magic and partitiong magic says operation halted , too many errors... I dont know why.

A:Windows thinks my laptop is a desktop!

ok
go
Start / Control panel / aperance and themes / change the computers theme / scren saver / power options / power schemes then select portable/laptop.
then go to advance tab on the top and select deisplay batery meter on task bar.

Hope that helped.

Hi, my laptop running 8.1 (came with 8 from factory, updated when 8.1 came out) was updated a couple of days ago, through an official prompt. Since the restart, I am getting a Touch Keyboard icon on the taskbar, Office apps have a touch mode and the pointer keeps disappearing. It never did this before the update. My laptop is NOT touchscreen, it is a series 5 Samsung, I don't mind the new icons to be honest, but can't stand the pointer disappearing and having to reboot every time. Any ideas as to why it happened and how I can fix it/avoid it in the future? TYIA

A:Laptop thinks it's touch screen after update

If you go to the bottom left of your screen, right click, then click on system, does it say that there is pen and touch support?

Also go to Device Manager, and check to see if there are any Pen and Touch devices installed.

If you can, post a screen shot of your device manager, Your system Window, and your desktop, that will help me, and others to find out the problem to this issue.

Its strange if Windows has loaded drivers for a device that isn't present, or installed the wrong drivers for a device on your system.

Try using Sysinternals Autoruns.

You can download the Sysinternals Suite, or just the Autoruns utility.

Having a long-standing issue with Windows 10, on my X1 Carbon 5th gen. When I use the find my device service, it NEVER shows my laptop where it actually is. Until recently it showed the location in GB, now it's in BC, Canada. This laptop has not been to either of those places. In chrome if I then click the "Locate me" button, it does show my correct location. My guess is that's Chrome reporting the location. Also certain windows services like Weather and Maps also report the wrong location.  Under the Control Panel > Region & Language, it's all set correctly. 'Date & time' is correct. As a sanity check, under 'Location', I've set a 'Default location' about 5 KM away from where I actually am. The idea being that I want to know when Windows is reporting that location, my real location (GPS, IP geolocation, etc) and when it's reporting my laptop has gone on vacation without me.  Any ideas?

I'm helping someone fix a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop that has a 1124x768 screen. The image on the screen stretches past the right edge of the screen by maybe 2 inches and past the bottom edge by about 1/2 inch. I checked the resolution and it's set at 1124x768. However, I checked the hardware settings on the monitor and Windows reports it as a 1280x800 screen, which explains why the image appears stretched off the edge. Windows is trying to stretch the image to fill pixels that don't exist. Is there a way to force Windows to recognize the screen as the correct resolution, or is this a hardware problem?

OK here's a quick breakdown of what happened.

My friend and I both bought refurbished Gateway laptops from tigerdirect.com that had Windows Vista preloaded. When SP1 came along, I did a manual download on my laptop, then copied the install file to my friend's laptop and updated that as well. A while after, he began getting a message telling him that the computer's copy of Vista was a pirated copy. I took his laptop, backed up his documents in safe mode, and ran a factory restore. I then did the SP1 update the right way through Windows Update, and it locked out even worse than before, not even allowing access to safe mode. On top of this, the serial number on the bottom of his laptop that has the Vista License number on it tore off partially. The serial number is still intact.

I've sent an email to Gateway about this, I have the date of purchase, a copy of the invoice from tigerdirect, and he has his credit card number used to purchase the laptop originally. Is there anything I can do to save this computer without buying a new OS for him? If it comes to that I may just try to find a copy of XP Pro since Vista is not that great, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I have an email into Gateway about this, but haven't heard back yet, and they want to charge $60.00/ hour for phone support.

I have just built up a bunch of systems using the ASUS M2NBP-VM mother board. Randomly, the systems get into a mode where they shut down 3 seconds after being powered up. While in that mode, the problem is consistent with the power down occurring over and over each time the unit is restarted.

I have tried replacing power supplies, CPU, memory, and removing all other devices including hard drives. I have even tried other brands of power supplies to no avail.

All of a sudden, they start working again, and then they are fine. I have over 50 units that have experienced this problem. I would really appreciate any suggestions on a solution.

My Asus K55A has been shutting down randomly. I do nothing really intensive on my laptop, just Word and Chrome. I have attached my admin events for reference. This has happened before and lead to a BSOD so I had the OS reinstalled and the only thing I have added to the basic system is Word. I have not updated to 8.1 so I am not sure if that really matters. I really need this laptop running correctly, I am taking the bar in July and cannot risk it randomly shutting down. Any help would be appreciated!
I usually am just on Chrome with a few tabs open or with Chrome and Word open. It just shuts down quickly and without warning and stays off until I turn it back on. Sometimes when I turn it back on it takes a while to load icons etc. Let me know if there is any other information that could help!

My mom has an Asus 1005PE. Today they told me of an issue they were having where the netbook wouldn't shut down. I checked it out and when you'd shut down windows, it would boot directly into the Asus ExpressGate. From here you could either boot back into windows or try to shut down again which resulted in another reboot back to ExpressGate. I ended up pulling the battery. Now the computer won't turn on at all. I get no lights turning on or anything.

I'm thinking it could have been a hardware problem all along. Could pulling the battery have screwed things up even more so that now it won't even turn on?

I feel terrible cause now my mom will be without a computer unless I can fix it. I think we're out of luck now since it won't even turn on I can't think of what I can do.

Until today, the wife's laptop had been connecting flawlessly to the wireless router and also showing multiple SSIDs of our neighbors. Then this morning, nothing. Did some fiddling and enabling/disabling the wireless adapter and then it worked for a short time. Now nothing again. It just says "no connections available" on the tray icon. At one point I was able to see our SSID, but without being able to connect to it. I'm not an expert, but this seems like a hardware issue, although I hope not.

Background: (1) the laptop connects to the internet with a wired connection (I'm using that connection right now); (2) my macbook, printer, and apple tv all connect fine to the wireless network; (3) the laptop shows "no connections available" but the macbook still shows several of the neighbors' SSIDs.

For these reasons, I conclude it must be a problem with the wireless adapter or wireless settings--hopefully not broken hardware--rather than a problem with the router.

I have searched the internet and sevenforums and tried several things for the last couple hours:

(1) restarting the router (multiple times)
(2) restarting the computer (multiple times)
(3) running the troubleshooting on windows
(4) turning off and on the wireless with the physical switch on the keyboard
(5) restarting the WLAN configuration service
(6) turing off IPv6 (I've now turned it back on)

I tried to do a system restore, but somehow that turned off. (There seems to be some problems wit... Read more

I have an HP Probook 4540S.

I don't use it that often and when I put it away, I make sure the battery is at 100%.

Today, I went to use it, and it would not power on.

I plugged in the A/C adapter and it powered up and showed the battery at 0%.

I called HP and they said that is normal and if I'm not going to use it for more than a week, to remove the battery.

I went to the HP forum, and they said just the opposite- The Mod said it has to be a software problem or a crappy battery.

Which is correct and would removing the battery when not using it be okay?

Thanks,

Paul

A:Laptop battery draining when laptop is shut down

Batteries do lose a certain percentage while being shutoff, usually 2-3% but it can be higher. The battery could be completely normal or it could be going bad. Typically this is from heat or poor charging habits (don't worry, everyone does it).

I have an old asus u45jc-a1 laptop. It has lot of problems like constant beeping and when connected to a monitor, it would many times monitor go to sleep. I tested this with several monitors and this happens with each monitor so i know its my laptop.

Anyways, i went and bought a new sager laptop mainly b/c i wanted a fast quad core laptop. I got the laptop and it is pretty nice. I didn't transfer anything from my old laptop to the new laptop. The only thing that i did however was i have a usb drive that i plugged into the new sager laptop b/c i have some documents there that i need to put it on my sager laptop. I never did this as i all i did was just plug the usb flash drive into the new laptop thus i dont have any files saved into my new laptop. Thus no documents, just a flash drive.

Recently i noticed that while using this new sager laptop, im having the same beeps just like my old asus laptop. This doesn't make sense at all b/c this laptop is brand new and i can't imagine it having problems like this early on. Also the beeps sound just the same like the asus laptops so i wonder if theres any coincidence to this. I had asked people in forums if i were to transfer documents from my asus laptop to this new sager laptop whether its documents or files, would there be any chance the new laptop would get corrupt files and then it might have similar problems like my asus laptop such as the beeping and connecting to a monitor and it randomly turning off. I was told... Read more

A:New Sager Laptop Beeps Just like Old Asus Laptop

Im thinking the advertisments on my sager laptop im seeing could be because im logged into my ebay acct ... however im not logged into the ebay account on my asus laptop. Thus when im checking ebay items on asus laptop im not logged in. But why does that item show up when im on my sager laptop sometimes such as that same item on ebay?

Welcome to TSG!
Have you set both power savers to Never?

There will be one for while you are plugged into the mains, as well as one for when on Battery.

my laptop will not shut down with this windows8 now when I close the lid.

A:laptop shut down

This is also happening om my desktop. I also get a 'winlog.exe' error at shutdown. The OS shuts down but my computer hardware keeps running [fans, disks, etc.] I'm getting rid of Windows 8 RP before it ruins my entire PC. II also now have no faith in Microsoft getting this utter nonsense fixed before release. I'll be Window 8 a miss when it comes out. It's a piece of junk.

Hello guys!I've got a problem with my Asus laptop. When I try to shut it down, after a while only the display turns off, while the laptop stays on forever (I can hear the sound of it working and the light which shows the state of the computer is green). It looks as if it were asked to sleep, except that I can't turn it on; all I can do is keep the power button pressed so I turn it off forcedly. This also happened 2 months ago and there's something common between the 2 situations. This error occured right after I performed a clean with CCleaner. I've just uninstalled CCleaner but the problem won't disappear. If you could help me,I'd me very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Were you using the registry cleaner in CCleaner?

Please download MiniToolBox to your desktop.

Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select Run as Administrator.

You will see an image like the one below.

Click on the following checkboxes only:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, then copy it and paste it in your topic.

I understand that doing the hard shutdown was your only option, but if there were applications still running files could be damaged.  Please do the following to make sure you don't have an corrupted files.

Please run System File Checker

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Start orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, it will look similar to the image below.

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notic... Read more

Hi I have a laptop and just two nights ago I was unable to shut it down. It says shutting down but when I got up the next morning it was still shutting down. I also can not get my task manager working I press ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task manager but nothing happens.

It is a Dell Studio 17 running windows 7. I have been pulling out the battery to turn it off and I know that cant be good but its the only thing I can think of.

When it starts up it gives me an error about a corrupt file for PDANET. I have started it in Safe mode and it shuts down fine.

My anti virus is the latest Norton Internet security.

Thanks
John.

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 5613 with Vista.

I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a couple of weeks. It started when I tried to download the latest Windows updates, they downloaded ok but when the install started the laptop hung. I have re-tried this a number of times but always with the same result. I haven't been able to switch off my laptop normally since and I have to force stop it instead.

I tried running my anti-virus and malware scans but they caused it to hang as well. I switched to safe mode and managed to run the scans successfully but nothing untoward was found.

At the moment, I can use the internet and email without any problem but the laptop hangs whenever I try to download anything or open the control panel.

I had some over heating issues recently which caused random shut downs but I gave it a good clean and haven't had any reccurance of the problem since.

Any ideas?

I have an Acer laptop running XP SP-2
This evening I was having a minor problem with a game so I closed it and then went to "Start" > Turn Off Computer then in the dialog box clicked "Restart".
It got as far as the blue screen that says windows is shutting down the nothing happens. I have pused the on/off switch, done "ctrl+ald+delete" Nothing.
I have also closed the screen and when I open it 5 or 10 minutes later still at the same point in the shut down process.
What would happen if I remove the battery from the unit and remove the AC power??

A:Laptop won't shut down

When you hit "ctrl+ald+delete" were any processes running that you could stop?

You have anti-virus software running on that computer?

Guess you're left with no other choice but to remove the battery. Sometimes a simple restart is all that it takes. You could also try a reset to last known config or system restore to an earlier point in time. Then you should upgrade to SP3.
