Solved: Explorer crashes and restarts desktop

Q: Solved: Explorer crashes and restarts desktop

Explorer intermittently crashes for some reason and it gets annoying. This is not Windows Internet Explorer, it is Windows Explorer. I'll be copying or moving files typically, or dbl click on a movie or picture file to launch it. It pops up a dialog saying explorer needs to be restarted. When I clik on it it restarts the desktop. What could be causing this?

Preferred Solution: Solved: Explorer crashes and restarts desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

After boot up, my desktop loads and then immediately the icons and start menu blink off and on about 3or4 times. Then they go off and never come back. I can brink up task mananger and try to run explorer.exe, but it trys to start and then goes back off. I have run Adaware and Bitdefender and cleaned much of the bad stuff out, but I'm still infected and the desktop still doesn't work. I originally had AVG antivirus, but at some point it quit working and wouldn't start up again, so i downloaded Bitdefender. Any help is most appreciated.

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

I'm usually doing normal day to day things when it crashes: surfing the web and/or opening a folder...
No idea why this is happening.

Suggest you try Teamviewer.  You can connect to it via a web browser.  Maybe it's the software that you're using on your home computer... just a guess.  From what I've read about the web browser interface, you don't need to install TV at work, it's strictly browser from your work.
Good Luck.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

How long has this been going on? You may want to try a system restore.

You may also want to do a repair install.

Last night I removed some malware from my computer using Hitman Pro. When I turned on my computer this morning explorer starting crashing, restarting, and crashing again. Oddly, though, I noticed then when I have Firefox or IE8 open full screen or even a Folder in Explorer nothing happens and the computer functions as usual. However as soon as I minimize everything and am back at the Desktop it starts the crashing/restarting process over again. After a couple of restarts I found that the crash only occured once all of the icons on the Desktop (meaning the small thumbnails for video files and descriptive content thumbnails on folders) had appeared, and they took a couple of seconds to load. The computer works fine in Safe Mode.

I tired scanning with Malwarebytes and they turned up nothing.

I tired running sfc /scannow in normal and safe mode and that said it was unable to fix everything.

I also tried Little Registy Cleaner in normal and safe mode and that apparently got rid of some stuff, but is unable to fix an apparent issue with ehGLID.GLIDPlugInUDCR and ehGLID.GLIDPlugInUDCR.1, though for all I know that could be a totally unrelated problem.

Anyone have any ideas? I figure maybe the Malware had attached itself to something and took an important part away when I removed it but I'm not sure.

A:Explorer Crashes Only When on Desktop

Grab Process Monitor. As soon as it loads, it's going to start capturing activity. When this happens, get Explorer to crash, then when it does once or twice click the magnifying glass (Capture) and save the file (doesn't matter what type), zip it up and send it over. Note that the log file can get very big very quickly, especially with the more programs you have running at the time. You may need to close programs and whatnot to lessen the amount of activity on your PC that it'll record.

Hey, I'm running Windows xp professional, and I recently upgraded the hardware in my computer. After this upgrade my computer would infrequently just restart, about once a week or so, but I left for a trip to vancouver for a week and when I got back and turned my computer on the problem started getting much worse. Now it happens about ten times a day, and I can't just leave it off because I don't have another computer and I need this one for classes. Also, when I try to play games it shuts down, or freezes about ten minutes after I start. I have run AVG, Spybot, and ad-aware, and the problem remains. This problem seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while I'm doing something, and sometimes it happens when the computer is doing nothing. Here are my specs.

Nvidia 790i Ultra SLI motherboard
Intel Core 2 duo 3.16 GHz
4 gigs ddr3 ram
Gforce 8800 GTS
Corsair hx1000w modular power supply

Any help would be appreciated, this problem is very annoying.

Have a Sony VIAO desktop PC (PCV-RS220) that got fried during bad thunderstorms so the Motherboard, Chip and Power supply were replaced. Everything on the system has been working great but now when you right click on the desktop as you would to get into the display settings, Explorer.exe crashes.

The error that is created in the Application logs is:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module hccutils.dll, version, fault address 0x0000a550.

This file is found in two (2) places on the hard drive - C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\Drivers\Video. Which leads me to believe that it's an old file that was in place from the old motherboards on-board video. I've tried un-installing the Intel Graphics entry through Add/Remove programs but the screen just blinks and remains the same. I've located the file in 2 locations in the Registry but it's under a Microsift Search Assistant path so I am uncertain if it's actually a video problem or not.

The new Motherboard is a Gigabyte 8S661FXMP-RZ and I am using the on-board SIS video.

Any ideas? One thing that I have not tried yet is to put an actual video card in the system to see if that changes anything.

Thank ya'll,

**Note** I can get into the Display settings by going through the Control Panel and can see that the Display on the Settings tab is correctly identifying the SIS Video. Also, under Device Manager, the SIS Video is all that appears under the Display Adapte... Read more

So, recently my pc had a booting problem, in which my laptop boots for 1 minute and I get BSODd. I did some research on the error and checked what might've caused this on bluescreen viewer, then I found out the cause was AVG. So I booted my laptop in safe mode and deleted AVG and every trace of it off my computer with revo uninstaller. I solved the booting problem, but now whenever I try to interact with my desktop - explorer doesn't respond and restarts itself every time, kind of forming and endless loop of constant crashing. When it restarts an error message pops up saying windows is unable to open steam and any other program whatsoever that isn't associated with microsoft. one time when I finally opened steam and tried to load up Borderlands 2 - surprise surprise, the loader didn't even pop up, even though a process of it was running. Also every error code has random numbers mashed in saying it's missing. It even crashes when I try to close those errors.

Thanks in advance.

As it says, if I open a folder and r/click any file (to send it to another disk), I get a message saying that Explorer has stopped working and then it is restarting. This happens every time I try this. It restarts OK every time but never tells me why it crashed.
When I go to do a System restore, it cannot complete the restore as it says a file cannot be accessed and that maybe an Anti-virus is running. I have disabled A/V and Firewall, both in Norton Internet Security which I only installed yesterday. All was working OK until later today, when I noticed that Windows 7 had installed 3 critical updates and I'm thinking that one or both are the cause?
These were KB973924 x 2 and KB972696.
Hope someone can help with this please!

A:Right click on file in desktop-Explorer crashes!

First open command promt (Start>all programs>accesories>command promt or Windows key+R and tpe CMD and hit enter)

Download CC Cleaner and remove Norton
CCleaner - Download

If that doesnt work.then type sfc/ scannow
This will try to repair windows files,i.e explorer.

If that says it found no problems,try a repair install to re-install missing or corrupted files of windows,this wont effect your data.

Hello everyone!

I'm loving the new Windows 10! But this problem is really bugging me.

Whenever I right-click a file anywhere on the Desktop, the File Explorer crashes briefly and then comes right back up. This does not happen anywhere else, only on the Desktop.

I tried going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers" with RegEdit and removing some of them, but to no avail.

Anything to point me in the right direction or any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

This problem came out of the blue. When I turn on my computer, it boots fine and then the login screen comes up in windows. I am able to login, but once I do nothing happens for about 30 seconds, and then I get an error that Explorer.exe has crashed. My desktop icons never load, and neither does the Start button or toolbar. It is a completely blank screen except for my desktop wallpaper. The only way I can run programs is though the taskmanager. If i try to run explorer.exe again, it crashes right away.

System restore has not worked. Explorer.exe still crashes in safe mode. Unfortunately, I don't have my windows xp disk to try to reinstall.

The only recent program I installed was a program called TVants, which I have since uninstalled. I really have no idea what else to do. Spybot S&D came up clean except for a few cookies.

I am running windows xp SP3. In case it may be of help, I have posted a HJT log below.

My computer crashes / restarts after the bios boot screen (I can still access the bios settings) basically after about 3 seconds after the bios splash screen the computer cuts out and then restarts, but it keeps going in a never ending cycle. of crashing and rebooting. I have tested all the components within the PC and have deduced that it is the hard drive, as all the other components are functional, and then i tested the hard drive on another computer the result was the same, wait about 4 seconds and force reboot.

If anyone can help me I am really needing help what should i do?? , should i copy the hole thing onto another hard drive and then reinstall windows?? or is there a way of recovering the files. THE COMPUTER IN QUESTION IS WINDOWS 7!

Since the old 182.06 driver I've been using on my Vista x64 Home Premium system didn't offer the "negative" saturation (digital vibrance) controls I needed to tone down the colors a bit on my new wide gamut monitor, I just tried updating them after being told that the option exists on never driver versions (and indeed it does, and I'm liking the effect very much).

I first tried updating through Windows update (which gave me a 191.something driver), but while it seemed to work fine, Windows Explorer (ie. the whole shell) would crash and restart every time I right clicked the desktop.
I uninstalled the driver (and unlike what I've seen on older Windows versions, after rebooting, Vista then promptly restored the old 182.06 driver my computer had shipped with - and which still didn't cause any crashing), downloaded 195.62 from the Nvidia site and ran the installer. The driver is now properly updated - and the digital vibrance controls working as they should - but I still can't right click the desktop without Explorer crashing and restarting.

I've been googling the issue a bit, and it seems like the problem is caused by "a bad context menu handler" (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers). I hate not having a working desktop right click menu - but I would also hate reverting to 182.06 and lose the saturation control - so I've just taken the chance and deleted the entry below from the registration database to get rid of the ...
