Optiplex 9010 Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) option disappears after selecting from BIOS.

Q: Optiplex 9010 Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx) option disappears after selecting from BIOS.

Hi All,
Tried to find a similar issue in the forums first. Forgive me if I this is a repeat afterall.
I got an Optiplex 9010 I7-3770 SFF (VPro) used desktop recently to put into my cloud in the lab. Normally I simply check the cover again (AMT #1) and move on with the MBEx selection after F12 during boot. This one is not working as expected. Here is the sequence of events:
1. Power on the computer and F12 to get the boot options/list.
2. I can see the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extensions option there. I select and press ENTER.
3. Screen disappears, but comes back now "without" the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extensions option! At the top is states that "Note, some options have been removed as they are no longer valid.".
I have not seen this before. IF it is disabled, why show it...
But in any case, the question I have is, how can I get this option to work so I can provision this box using Intel AMT/MBEx settings. The machine is enabled for MBEx (AMT #1 on the inside chasis cover).
The BIOS revision for this box is A14. I may need to update it as well. Though I am going to wait for any responses before doing so.
Thank you all.

I have two Lenovo T470s that seem to have lost the ability to access any of the Intel vPro options following a bios update using the Lenovo update tool.  When going to the boot menu (F12) there is no Ctrl+P option any more. There is also no mention of Inter MBEX in the Bios menus. During the Lenovo boot screen, I can press Ctrl+P and it will say "launching ME configuration screen" and then it will go into Windows. Full Model Number 20HGS4DJ00CPU i7-6700UBIOS Version N1WET49W (1.28) 7/4/2018

I have a ProBook 450 G3 running Windows 10. I am planning on updating the BIOS to N78 Ver. 01.15 Rev.A (from Ver. 01.12). I noticed the following statement on the BIOS download page: "HP strongly recommends updating the Management Engine firmware to version 11.0.18.1002 to prevent BIOS/Management Engine firmware corruption issues.". How can I determine the version of the IME firmware on my system? The latest version of the IME firmware for download is 11.0.0.1202 ... should I just go ahead and download and install that before the BIOS update? Thanks in advance,Mike

A:BIOS Update / Intel Management Engine Firmware

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. To answer your question about Intel ME... Perhaps in the Control Panel > Programs and features. When you find it there click on it and it should show a versionorif you search for it in C:\Program files or C:\Program files (x86) and search inside the folder, it should show the version somewhere. You may also see if this tool will work on W10 > https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19009     But considering you already have experience with BIOS things , I am wondering why do you want to do it again... General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for the "noble cause" of updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong. Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible.

Hey everyone,
I recently purchased two second hand Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF PCs for my grandparents with the intention of upgrading the memory in them from 4GB to 8GB and swapping out the 250GB HDD with an Intel 535 Series 250GB SSD so they both had a fairly fast/cheap PC.

When they arrived I booted them both up and they worked fine so I added the extra memory and they still plotted along fine but when I swapped out the HDDs from SSDs. Neither of the computers recognised them in the BIOS for some reason which I think was really strange. Though if I plug the HDD back in it works fine. Has anyone came across a problem like this? Here is a list of the things I have tried so far.

·       Updating the BIOS to the latest version (A22)
·       Reset CMOS (removing battery and RTC reset jumper switch)
·       Using a different SATA Port
·       Using a different SATA Cable
·       Using a different SATA Power connector
·        Verified the SSDs in another working PC.

Hi there,
Recently I got a Dell Optiplex 9010 AIO running BIOS revision A05. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, and flashed the latest BIOS (version A19) from within Windows. System rebooted, it flashed the BIOS, but had an error just like this one.
In the end it said "BIOS Update Successful, Rebooting" but after rebooting, the Dell Logo/POST screen has never come up again. The fans turn on, the power light is solid white, but there's no video output on either the internal screen or a VGA-connected monitor. I've tried opening it up, removing the CMOS battery, using the CMOS clear jumper, when disconnected from power of course, to no avail.
Any ideas or have I just made myself a 23" paperweight? Thanks in advance.

Help please..I have Dell Optiplex 5100 and 5133...latest Phoenix Bios version A20...I have new Xerox Docuprint M750 that will not work with ECP printer port. I do not have option in Bios to either make it ECP or change it from ECP. Only options are PS/2 and AT. In Dell documentation it says will support EPP and ECP via drivers. I have tried to change driver for port in Device manager to regular port (both by changing and also by deleting in safe mode and reinstalling it..) but nothing works. Win 95 keeps finding it and reinstalling as ECP. I looked at board (printer board is embedded on the board - not a separate card) and see no obvious jumpers or anything. Dell support has been ignoring me and Xerox support just says talk to your PC vendor. I'm ready to send printer back but like it because it has individual color ink cartridges... Does anyone have any ideas...I'm stumped. Pleas help - I'm not afraid to go into registry or whatever but don't know where to go from here. THANKS

I'm having cursor response issues in a CAD program I'm using (~10sec delay from mouse movement to cursor movement).
Intel have a driver update for the HD 2500 video card (15.33.45.4653), but Dell isn't providing it (their latest is 10.18.10.4425, which is installed).
If I try to run the Intel update, I get an error message "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer."
Since Dell seems to no longer be supporting the Intel HD 2500 video card, how can I update this driver?

Relying on the information on the Lenovo website listing "Ubuntu" and "Redhat certified" under "Operating Systems", I chose a Lenovo P52. Hello,
Does anyone know when Dell will put out the BIOS FIX for this machine? They already did for the 7050 and the 7440aio and similar models back in June/First Week but not the 7040s running 6th gen same processors?
According to the news, for 6th gen it should already be available from the oems, and for now, disable the hyper-threading in the bios but that makes it WORSE running at 0.87 etc. Needs updated for the 7040s.
Thanks!

Hello, I have recently purchased Precision 3510 laptops with the intention of using them for research on Intel's new Software Guard Extensions (SGX). These laptops come with the required CPUs that support these new CPU instructions and (we thought) the required BIOS support as well.
In the BIOS for the laptops, there is an option for enabling SGX, but when enabled we are not able to install any of the official Intel SDKs on Windows OR Linux. Additionally, we ran an SGX test program that would dynamically detect the SGX features using CPUID and Machine Specific Registers (MSRs). It successfully detected the SGX hardware support (i.e. the SGX instructions are physically on the CPU chip), but it showed that the BIOS flags controlling the startup of SGX were not enabled (possible SGX specific MSRs have not been set). The specific CPU flag that needs to be set is described here: https://github.com/ayeks/SGX-hardware . Here is a quote from that page that describes what is needed for SGX to work, "The CPU and the motherboard BIOS must support SGX. SGX is turned off by default and must enabled via MSR.IA32_Feature_Control.SGX_Enable. Only the BIOS can make changes to the IA32_Feature_Control".
For reference, we are using the latest BIOS version for our model - version A07. Also, the CPU we have is the Intel Core i5 - 6300HQ CPU @ 2.3GHz.
I hope we can resolve this issue in a timely manner as we are not able to use these laptops for their intended purpose... Read more

Hello,
i own a vostro 3560 Notebook, i7, 8GB, 32GB msata and i replaced the HD by a Samsung 850 Pro SSD / 256Gb. Both ssds have been formated - i did not want to use the Intel rapid storage / start technology. The problem now is the following:
When i install Win 7 / 64 bit, this  only works in the "Intel rapid storage" mode (bios-option). If i try it with ata or ahci, the instalation hangs up after the first reboot at that point, the four windows- colours come together. There appears no bluescreen - the system only stopps.
I tried to renew the bios or changed it to version 13 and then back to V17 - but no sucess.
After i installed win 7 in this mode, I tried the regestry trick with the 0 instead of the 3 to load the ahci driver. I renewed the ahci-Driver manualy , and after that, i played with the ata driver in the same way. There always is the same result: the system freezes while booting when the colours come together. Now with  a blue-screen ;-).
The system only works, when in bios the irs-Option (instead ahci) is set.

Any ideas ... and sorry for my english ;-)

Joachim

I updated from A19 to A22 and even back down to A19 on my OptiPlex 755...  Now it skips lines when I try to change settings in BIOS or when I boot to a DOS USB drive it double types letters.  Never happened before until after this update.  I ran into this a few years ago and I know its a simple fix, but I can't seem to remember what I did.  It does not happen in Windows 7.  I've swapped the keyboard, etc.

Hello

some friends of mine informed me of this article on extremetech.com that informs us about intel patches major flaws in intel management engine.
Intel has acknowledged and patched a new suite of security problems affecting its Intel Management Engine. This subsystem controls many low-level capabilities of the SoC, and can be used for features like remote access and Intel’s Trusted Execution Engine. The company has released a list of 10 vulnerabilities across multiple products that are addressed by recent driver updates. Potentially affected systems include:

6th, 7th & 8th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v5 & v6 Product Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor W Family
Intel® Atom® C3000 Processor Family
Apollo Lake Intel® Atom Processor E3900 series
Apollo Lake Intel® Pentium™

That’s Intel’s entire product line dating back to the introduction of Skylake. According to Intel, attackers could impersonate the Intel Management Engine, Server Platform Services, and/or the Trusted Execution Engine, load and execute arbitrary code without the user or OS being aware of it, and destabilize or crash a system altogether.
Intel has released a detection tool so you can check to see if your system is affected by these issues. Updates will have to be issued by firmware vendors, however, so even ... Read more

Hey @cgruchy11,  Thank you for joining in the HP Support Forums and asking for help with the BIOS Update on your HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab137ca that you are stuck on.  Did you manage to get the BIOS Update to finish?  Is it the BIOS Startup menu that you are trying to have not come up when you start the Notebook? The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is responsible for setting up devices used by your system so that those devices can send and receive data. Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?
Andy

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to try manually installing the driver as follows. Go to the device manager and click on the problem IMEI device. Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file (assuming you ran sp63661). That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp63661. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way.

I ran Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Successful:

CPU - Tick
RAM - Tick
Hard Drive Soace - Tick
Windows Aero - Tick

Update required:

Intel ® Management Engine Interface: "Action Required" - Update required to make this device compatible with Windows 7. Go online for the latest driver from the manufactures website.

Now, how on earth do I know what driver I need to download for the device???

It also tells me I need to do a custom installation and then reinstall applications, does this mean "Clean Install"? I want to do CLEAN anyway.

A:Intel (R) Management Engine Interface

My two cents on this is:Do a clean install. There are so many potential and unforseen issues that you could run into if you "upgrade" to Win 7, no matter what OS you jump up from. Back up all of your data, personal stuff and important information and start from scratch.Get the drivers first that you know you will need for Win 7 before you get to the install. Especially drivers for you Network Interface Card (NIC).That's just my thoughts on the matter. Best of luck.

Hi,
I have DELL Inspiron 15R 5520 laptop with processor Intel i5-3210M and the system is working pretty well but i have some questions about Intel Management Engine Interface.
1- Is this component important or necessary for my system ?
2- If i disable IME Interface in Device Manager, could this harm my system or cause a negative impact on my laptop's performance ?
Please clear things up for me and Merry Christmas everyone.

A:Intel Management Engine Interface

You can disable it without any performance or functionality compromises you?d likely care about, but if you?re thinking about doing that for security reasons, that won?t be effective. The Intel ME is essentially a co-processor that runs underneath the OS, and the drivers just allow things like pop-up notifications within Windows for things going on in Intel ME and I think a configuration interface ? but exploitable vulnerabilities remain exploitable because they run underneath the OS. For example, if your system was ordered with the vPro Advanced Features option, it has a full-blown VNC interface at the hardware level that allows you to remotely control the system even while it?s shut down. However, that option is typically not ordered, and even when it is, that VNC functionality (called Intel AMT KVM) is not enabled by default.

Hi

I have a problem with the driver for Intel Management Engine Interface on my Windows 7 64 bit PC. I have been trying to sort this with HP Support but after following all their advice without solving the problem they now suggest a re-install of Windows 7.

What I would like to know is in simple terms, what does the Intel Management Engine Interface do? Is it essential? What are the likely effects of this problem?

My PC seems to be running just fine apart from the error message for the Intel Management Engine Interface. Should I bite the bullet and do a complete re-install or should I just ignore it?

All advice gratefully received.

Hello
What is the MEBx BIOS hotkey combination on a Dell Optiplex 7040? The option is enabled in bios but when I try the standard combination ctrl+p it doesnt work.
I have tried on different machines.
Thank you
Soeren

A:What is the MEBx hotkey on a Optiplex 7040

Ctrl-P only works when the post screen is displaying "Intel® MEBX: <CTRL-P>"  if you don't see that prompt, your bios is either lacking the configuration, or it is not enabled. if you don't have options related to the AMT/ME, look for an updated bios, and contact the manufacturer.  NEWER Versions use CTRL I or CTRL M or another key.
MEBx Password Reset for Skylake desktop systems such as the OptiPlex 7040
Skylake systems which have previously gone through set up and configuration using MEBx will not revert by selecting full un-provision in BIOS settings.
Older system versions of OptiPlex systems which used Legacy settings could undergo a reset by selection of settings in BIOS under the MEBx interface.
Skylake systems are unable to use BIOS options to reset the system settings in case of lock out. In order to restore MEBx to default settings (See Figure 1.), a CMOS reset using the RTCRST jumper pins on the motherboard must be completed.
Figure 1. - MEBx BIOS Menu
Use the RTCRST Reset Jumper .
MEBx Password Reset is completed using the Real Time Clock Reset (RTCRST) Jumper pins on the motherboard to Clear Previous Configurations
Turn the system off and disconnect all cables and connected devices from the system
Remove the system cover
Locate the 2-pin password (PSWD) jumper on the system board
Remove the 2-pin jumper plug
Locate the 2-pin RTCRST jumper on the system board (usually located near the CMOS battery on desktop systems, ... Read more

On my P50, when I check for updates with Lenovo Companion, it always tries to install Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware, and it downloads, says it failed when the little black command prompt opens, reboots, and then the update history said it was installed, yet Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware keeps popping up as an update.  What is this update supposed to do? Why is it failing? Everything else on this computer is up to date.

Hi there,I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L412. I installed Windows 10 from scratch, no other programs or tools besides Windows 10 are installed. (The issue I'm having also occurs when I tried the same with Win 7)When I turn off the PC by Windows> Shut down, the system shuts off and the screen becomes dark, but the PC stays on and stops reacting, the only way to turn it off is by pushing the physical button on the PC and then the PC will power off but will automatically start again and I need to push the button again to power it off and only then it will stay off.The PC will start without issues.I found posts that this behaviour could be caused by the Intel Management Engine Interface, which funny enough, has an yellow admiration symbol in Device Management. It also gives a message which says that the device can not be started (Code 10).The driver 6.0.0.1179 seems to be the correct one, though. After deleting it will be reinstalled by Windows so I can not get rid of it. Lenovo also states that this is the correct driver.I tried ideas like disconnecting battery and CMOS battery, downgrading BIOS from 1.39 to 1.35 but nothing helped.I also tried the Intel Driver Update Utility. It suggested installing a file Intel Chipset Device Software, but that installation failed with 'unknown error'So I'm running out of ideas and any suggestion and any help is very much appreciated!Thinkpad L412Intel Core i3 CPU M370 @ 2.40GHzWindows 10 Pro x64 (Creators Update)Intel Managemen... When I run the "Update" app on "Lenovo Companion" it tells me I need this and then appears to go through the whole installation process followed by a reboot. But then when I run the "Update" app again it tells me I still need to install it, as if it never happened. I went to the Lenovo support page to try to install it from there but I have the same problem, in that after rebooting and running the "Update" feature it tells me I still need to install it. Any ideas? Thanks.
