taskbar buttons gone

Q: taskbar buttons gone

Hi everyone,
Sorry to disturb with a petty and stupid problem like this one. Don't know how exactly I managed to do it , but my the buttons for running applications are gone from my taskbar. Can only switch between programs via ALT+TAB, which is not always convenient.
I have start button, quick launch tab, language tab and notification tray in my taskbar all working properly, but the actual buttons for running programs are not displayed. Also the dividing border is missing between the quick launch tab and the area where the buttons for running applications normaly appear (little 'engraved' dots line in Windows XP theme). And the taskbar itself looks like there is another one under it (two edges on top). However, draging it around the screen does not help.
Could you please suggest how to restore the default appearance of the taskbar.
Thank you very much,

Denis

Preferred Solution: taskbar buttons gone

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi arthurk and welcome

Have you also 'locked' the taskbar option? Rightclick on the taskbar and see if there is a tick next to this item. If not, Rightclick again and choose Properties and see if there is a tick next to Taskbar and Group Similar Taskbar Buttons.

So i used IOBit Advanced System Care 5 to tweak some settings and apparently I messed something up lol I have reset them to default but it still does the same I have restarted several times, I haven't tried a system restore yet as that sometimes can cause problems beyond what it's worth, but I am willing to do it if it will help!

As you can see from the picture, when I have a single window open the button in the taskbar is stretched to fill the entire taskbar, if I open 2 they each take up 50% of the task bar and so on. I would like to return to normal sized buttons but I have no idea how to go about that!

Thanks in advanced if anyone can help, and PS I hope this isn't a repeat question I used the search function but the only threads I could seem to find were about stretching the taskbar across multiple monitors which is not what this is abut. so sorry for that if this is a common question

A:Buttons on Taskbar stretch to fill entire Taskbar

Welcome aboard, Charles Darwin Nice name

Advanced System Care 5 makes such a mess is reported earlier, too . First what I am to say you that windows 7 does not need any advanced system care at all . All these programs are not enough able to care windows 7 system. The inbuilt disk cleanup utility and CCleaner is enough for the OS.

Now let us discuss about the fix. If some registry backups are made by Advanced System Care 5 , restore those backups first.

If not fixed yet, follow SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker .

Another idea to fix it may be by applying the System Restore to an earlier date than occurrence of that mess.

If still not fixed, try Taskbar - Change Icon Button Width Size .

At the last point, you can always perform a Repair Install , when no other fixes are working.

Please post back with results

Hi all

I'm having a problem with my taskbar buttons. They attempt to display the full directory they represent. For example, three of them display "C:\Documents and...." becasue they attempt to display the full directory. It's a new computer and I don't remember my old XP installation doing this. It makes negotiating between windows difficult because it is difficult to see which folder is being represented.

Is it posible to change it so that only the specific folder name is displayed?

Hey guys,

Loving windows 7 so far. The only gripe I have is I'd like to find a way to use buttons and not labels on the taskbar without combining - for example, if I'm using multiple firefox browsers, it collapses into the same icon. I'd prefer to have different icons for each different browser to eliminate the extra mouse click or hover time required.

Does anybody know if this is possible yet?

Cheers,

Jonny

Mysteriously enough I am having the same trouble

I have done all the obvious
- restarted
- create and tried another profile/log on (the problem isnt happening there)
- searched the MS Knowledge base
- Browsed the MS Newsgroups which led me to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm where I tried #240 and http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm#util - fixes - restore task bar to default setting
- I started in Safe Mode (problem still exists) and swapped to a different user still in safe mode (problem does not occur)

If I close the "Quick Launch Bar" (and dont have any other of the taskbar toolbars active) - I dont have a taskbar/start bar

In the Taskbar properties Keep the taskbar... and Group similar... are on/checked

Any suggestions? While this isnt disabling, its pretty annoying

Why is it that some Taskbar buttons combine and some don't? Currently, I have FireFox, IE, Safari, Outlook and Windows Explorer pinned to my Taskbar. When I start Firefox, Outlook or Windows Explorer, the windows group to the program icon on the Taskbar. If I launch IE or Safari, the windows don't group to the program icons but rather open a new button to the right of my 5 program icons. I have a funny feeling that it wasn't always that way. Does anyone know why?? PS. I'm on Ultimate 64bit

A:Some Taskbar buttons not combining

I've noticed this over the past several weeks as well.  For me, it dealt more with programs updating and newer versions changing the pinned programs' shortcuts.  Here's the simple steps I've taken to remedy this (though I'm not aware if this will work between updates):
Open program that isn't combining properly, so it shows uncombined in taskbar.
Unpin original link from taskbar.
Pin newly-opened program from an opened, uncombined program-- do NOT pin from Start Menu or other shortcut.
This happened with Google Chrome, AIM, and iTunes.  All 3 have been updated recently, so that may be the culprit.  Since I've unpinned and re-pinned, everything seems to work as it should.  Appears to be an issue with shortcut handling and the combined buttons.  Just pin from the opened program itself and all is well.

A:How to enlarge the fonts of the taskbar buttons

try this from microsoft (Google search): Make the text on your screen larger or smaller

at the bottom of the tutorial I think it alters the DPI, so if the top bit alters it, try changing it back, and hopefully the text stays

There is another program for vision/hearing/etc impared that could potentially help you, even if you aren't any of those. It sometimes lets you alter things you otherwise could not, I just forget the name of it in windows 7, I'll have to get back to you on what I'm talking about.

Hi all

I have followed various guides on the internet to achieve this but it does not seem to work.

I have found I like my task bar to be big icons and always combine, no labels. I think this is pretty default. I used to use a 3 high non combine task bar in WinXP, but anyway.

But when have e.g. mulitple windows open, and I click the taskbar icon I want a Text list of my open windows, not the Thumbnails ..

If I open e.g. 11 windows, I get what I want. Please see pictures.

If you look at the thumbnail image you will see it is nearly impossible to tell actually which window is which, as they all look the same, and Windows helpfully cuts of the title of the window. :/

How ever if I open a couple more windows I get a nice text list that lets me choose exactly what I want.

How do I get a text list ALL THE TIME?
I have diabled Aero Peek in the taskbar property setting but I beleive this is just for Desktop only. I have rad that disabling it in Computer properties -- see attached screen shot should fix it, but I have done this, restarted and it's still showing me thumbnails.

How do I fix this ? Cheers all

When you mouse over a button on the taskbar in Windows 7, the button glows in the predominant color of the program's icon, with the glow being most intense where the cursor currently is. Then the cursor leaves the button, the glow goes away.

However, for me, when the cursor leaves a button and does not then enter another button, the glow stays on the previously hovered over button. This is not what is supposed to happen. Does anyone know what causes this or how to fix it?

Using the computer (Windows Vista) after my little sister I found that she had done something to the taskbar so that the buttons showing open windows appear on the right instead of on the left.
I cannot work out how this was done or how to change it back, and can't find anything about making the taskbar work from right to left in any help files.
It's not a terrible fault, but it's rather annoying as we aren't used to looking there for open things, and it automatically squashes the taskbar buttons up because it thinks it hasn't got much room.

Any idea how to make it go back to normal? Thank you.

A:Solved: Taskbar buttons gone all right-to-left

Never mind, happened upon the solution.

In case anyone else ever wants to know, the reason I couldn't move the tasbar buttons back was that the taskbar was locked. Unlocking the taskbar (right click inside taskbar and untick 'Lock the taskbar') allowed the handles for resizing each of the sections of the toolbar to be shown.

The section for active windows was really small and squashed up on the right; extending it back over towards the Quicklaunch tray on the right fixed the problem.

If this is your case, click repeatedly the icon in taskbar (maximize / minimize) to see if the window opens and disappears to the left or to the right when maximized. Follow the instructions in this post to bring it to your desktop: Windows disappearing to the side...

When I have several stacked IE windows open and minimized, I sometimes have to click the taskbar button several times before the preview tiles come up. Then when I click the tiles the window doesn't always maximise, and instead they just disappear.

Is there any anything I can do to change this, as it wasn't happening before?

You might see if turning off Animations in the taskbar in your visual effects settings may be able to help improve how fast the taskbar thumbnail previews open some.

Hi everyone, whenever I shut down and restart my computer (HP mini netbook) my task bar resets to the old windows task bar/windows and buttons. I would have to re-change it to the Windows XP in the theme section for it to go back to normal every time I sign in for it to go back to the original, is there any solution to this problem? is it a virus or malware that changes it back on purpose?? Never had this problem so hopefully someone can help me out, appreciate it and thanks in advance.

I keep 'losing' my quick-launch icons on the left-hand side of the task-bar. The icons first become inoperative, and shortly afterwards vanish altogether. Hovering the mouse pointer over the quick-launch corner does briefly produce the outline of buttons, and the "tip box", but nothing further. They do return if I re-boot, but are soon gone again. If I right-click-Open Folder, Win explorer opens the folder containing the links, and clicking on those links does work. Any ideas folks?

This problem has been present since MS pushed WinXP Pro SP3.
