System Tray icons on vertical taskbar.

Q: System Tray icons on vertical taskbar.

This is one of those things that could be worded in so many ways, there may be a solution out there but I have no idea what phrasing may have been used in such a case. Basically, I recently switched to using a vertical taskbar on the left side, more workable area on widescreen monitors. I love it so far, except for the change in system tray behavior. They're doubled up, which is fine, but if I have an odd number of icons it disturbs my general arrangement. This is hugely annoying for me as I frequently use the system tray to open multiple applications I always have open in the background, such as IRC or AIM. Easiest to explain using animage.

Is it possible to have the tray like it is in the second one? Or if there is a way to have a single line of icons, that is also an acceptable solution.

Preferred Solution: System Tray icons on vertical taskbar.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is actually for a friend and I tried everything I could think of but nothing works. She recently installed WindowBlinds and as she was installing Avast it apparently happened (if this helps)

What happened is the icons in the System Tray, and the Quick Launch icons because the Start menu, and even the icons inside the Start menu have enlarged. They are probably 1.5x the size of the original and are also blurry. The time in the bottom right now includes the date also.

I thought her taskbar was moved up a notch, but it's as low as it can go. So thats not the problem. If you right-click the taskbar when it is unlocked and go to View, you can change the icons from large to small. It's on small. So something else happened.

Any clue what could've happened?

Hi...just recently when i started my computer up..and after windows loaded...there was just my background...all my icons & task bar & system tray were gone. The only way i could turn my computer off was manually....than i waited a bit..and when i started it again..windows did a disk check..than when it loaded again..all my icons & other stuff were back. But when i restart it or turn it off & than turn it on next day...its same thing again..just a background...so it looks like the only way my icons come back is when windows does a disk check.
Whats causing my computer to do this? I've had problems with trojan horse virus's recently...dont know if its related. I hope somebody out there can help me solve this problem.

Anyone know how to change it to default?

Quickest way would probably be to just use system restore.
If you can't access the start menu, you can ctl alt del and use the run feature in the task manager. (file -> run)

ok a simple issue I hope
In my taskbar sytem tray icons will be enclosed in this bubble thing with the arrow on it it collects icons to save space. (sorry no idea what its called)
options in notification area are set to show all icons, but it persists to put icons in that bubble..it is not the balloon notification I'm talking about.
I would like simply that it does not hide icons in this bubble.
thanks in advance Vagablonde

Well that`s what ticking the box is supposed to do.

You`ve done that and yet all your icons still do not appear ?

Another way would be to check to show each and every icon and notification.

As you can see the attached picture, in vertical taskbar you can't see icons in 2 columns, even if you pull the taskbar to middle of screen

more explain: if your icons in horizontal taskbar were full and you make the taskbar bigger you can see that icons goes in 2 rows, but vertical taskbar didn't work like that. (stupid windows )

sorry if i not explaied very well, my english is not very good.

have you any idea?

Welcome to Seven Forums . Sorry, it is somewhat unclear to me by your pictures what you have/want. If you mean icons of items pinned to the taskbar, then I believe they do grow to fill the space. It is possible to change their width to a certain extent

Soooooooooooooo, I have designated these as different even though they both go at the bottom of the screen.
The ones on the left seem to be known as icons in the "Taskbar" but the ones on the right when installed usually say they they can be put in the "Tray". What makes them different (at least on my both my Vista and 7 OS's) is that the ones on the left, in the Taskbar, are large and the ones on the right, in the Tray, are small.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo,
Is there anyway to make them all the same uniform pixel size?

(I dun't care about Vista anymore, Lucy)

thanks for the help.

A:Taskbar / Task Tray icons

If using small icons is ok with you, you can set that in taskbar properties.
Then they should all be the same size - small icons.
Right click on the Taskbar and click Properties.

Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons

If you want large icons in the Notification Area I don't think you can do that.
Here is an old SF Thread about this:

If you're adventurous you can play with customizations and see if you can find something you prefer:

Good evening!

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for me to post this, but I had a couple quibbles with dual monitor support on both Win10 and Win10 Insider preview. There was the nice addition in Windows Insider Preview of having a clock on both your monitors (whereas that wasn't the case in Win10) but not having the option to have the tray icons on both monitors is KILLING me. I am a gamer, and generally use my second monitor for generic stuff, i.e., Steam friends/chat, web browsing, and launching games or other things from the tray, using my second monitor, while I am in a game. Now, my problem arises because I have to set my second monitor as the main monitor. That makes games launch on that monitor by default, and I use DualMonitorTools to do things like lock my cursor to one screen, switch windows quickly from one screen to another, etc. Those functions may be rolled into Win10 by default, but when I was using 7/8/8.1, I needed to use third party software to be able to launch what I needed on my main monitor while still having access to my tray icons and taskbar. The games I play, I launch on the smaller, second monitor (which is my "primary monitor" in Windows settings) and then use DMT to flip them to my REAL primary monitor. This doesn't work with all games, not to mention it is pretty clunky - when it should be easy.

I am not sure if I explained my issues well enough but in summary, how about an option to have dual splash areas for tray icons?

You might try rebuilding your icon cache.

Im a first time poster and I hope I have selected the correct category in this forum.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, pre-installed on a new laptop ive purchased in the last month. I had it set to automatically download and apply all updates.

Within the last couple of weeks, at some point suddenly my desktop icons stopped appearing and I noticed there are no system tray icons, ie volume, network, Power.

Ive searched these forums and found instructions on how to access the "Turn System Icons On Or Off" and the only option I can change is for 'Clock'. The remaining options Volume, Network, Power, Action Center are all greyed out.

I cant understand why I dont have 'permission' to do this and I wonder if it is connected to me not seeing anything on my desktop in so far as icons.

Also, I noticed I cannot 'right-click' my desktop space, which normally would have allowed me to access display options.

In searching these forums I found some references to Administrator permissions, but my User management area says I am an administrator.

Does anyone have any feedback for something I can check/fix?

Steve

Hey Guys,

I'm not too sure if this may be possible. I've done a bit of "googling" but the key words always bring up "how to move the taskbar" but that is not what I want....

Basically my monitor has developed a small leak down on the bottom right, nothing major, it can wait until I've saved up to get a nice new one. For now though I can't see my tray notification and more importantly the clock. Is there anyway to move the sytem tray (including the clock) further towards thw middle so that I can see it?

XP has been around for years so I would have thought someone would have come up with a way!

Thanks

A:Move the system tray NOT the taskbar

It's built into the program to always be on the right of the taskbar when horizontal (top or bottom) and the bottom of the taskbar when vertical (left or right side).

What I'd like is for a program that normally appears in the system tray to show in the taskbar at all times it is running so i can easily see it and use the exit functions etc.
Specifically for Steam - (X) minimizes to system tray and hides activity in the task bar. I don't mind if this results in 2 icons showing (1 for an active window and 1 for the process) I know you can do the same from system tray for this particular program, but I just don't have the habit to look there for anything other than system background applications.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 and am comfortable tinkering with registry and system files if needed.

So the questions are:
1/ Can a system tray icon be permanently moved to the taskbar applications area?
2/ If not, can a background process be assigned a taskbar icon when active?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Bear with my details, as I fear this is not a common problem- I can't find it on Google. I have been recently (not sure what caused it) having troubles with the taskbar and system tray in windows XP Pro. Some time after a fresh reboot (seems not to occur directly after a reboot), my windows on the taskbar don't respond correctly to my mouse clicks. That is to say that for instance right now, if I click on a different internet explorer window (on the taskbar), that window doesn't come up in front of this window as in normally would. Instead the taskbar section of that window changes from its regular blue colour to the dark orange colour as it would if something in that window had changed in the background (for example when you get a message on a MSN messenger window that is running in the background).
Alt-tabbing brings up the window no problems and if I click the desired 'task' 3 times it comes up -(once to turn colour, twice to minimize it, and the third time it pops up in the foreground). This is quite ANNOYING.

The second issue is with the system tray. Often times, (with any application it seeems) when I right-click the sys. tray icon the resulting menu stays there even after I click off of it- in the background or in other applications. The only way to get rid of it is to select one of the menu options. This is also very annoying.

I doubt it is any virus or spyware, as I stay updated with those software.

Hi there everyone.

I seem to be having a problem with a 2 troublesome programs.

Advanced System Care Free 3.3.4 and Orbit Downloader 2.8.13 which are both the latest versions respectively.

I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.

1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.

2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.

Any suggestions?

Hello Oreo,

Double check to see if the notification icon may be set as hidden somehow.

You might see if placing a shortcut for the program in the Start Menu Start Up folder may allow it to run at startup for you instead.

Hello hello2007.
Is there an option in the software itself to disable the icon ?. Check under tools/options/preferences to see if it can be disabled.
As this is an anti-logger piece of software, it may be designed into the software to keep an icon in the system tray.
A lot of security software does this, to ensure that you know it is running.
Not much help i know, but at least you know its running.

Could the program icons in the bottom tool bar be the cause of a slow start-up ?

There is quite a few and most are large programs.

If they are the cause can I just delete them ?

Some use msconfig but I don't. Start>Run>type in msconfig>Ok/Startup tab
----------
First right click on the icons in the system tray(or double left click to open)and try to access the "settings", "preferences" or "options" of each of the applications that you don't want to start when the computer boots up. There should be an option labeled "Start upon Windows Startup". Make sure that option is unchecked.
If there is no option, download and install
CodeStuff Starter to manage your startup programs
Launch the program and uncheck any program that you don't want to load/run at startup.
If you later change your mind, replace the checkmark.
It's very easy to search within the program too!
Right click on an entry>Search Internet>search engines & some sites below.

Identify and disable start-up programs from running.

I had to do system restore because my Firefox updated itself to a latest weirdest version ever with all bunch of plug-ins and bookmarks disappearing. After system restore, some icons on my system tray disappeared, including my Comodo firewall and my batterie's power management software. Now I know the processes are running. How do I get icons back to the tray? Thank you.

I just found this while browsing internet. Can someone tell me if this is legit? http://winhlp.com/node/16#comment-2246

My Win 7 64 bit computer currently shows 2 identical icons in the lower right system tray for the weekly microsoft/windows updates that are available. Previously, whenever an update was availabe an icon would show. This week there are 2 identical icons. My updater is set to notify me when updates are available but not to download or install them. I have downloaded and installed all the critical updates this week. The icons currently still being displayed only relate to optional updates that I do not want to install currently.

Why are there 2 icons? And, how do I eliminate one without installing the optional updates?

A:Two Identical System Tray Icons

Hello poolmon

This is usually just caused by the system tray icons messing up which happens from time to time. This should solve your issue - Notification Area Icons - Reset

I set "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar", but the icons have spaces only.

How can I solve this problem?

Try placing the arrow over the icon you want on the taskbar....Then right click.

In my context menu I see "Pin to taskbar" seventh item down, yours may differ....Click on that.

So I want to hide an icon that is showing in my system tray. It's not really necessary to be there, and there is no option to not show it there. This is for a launch manager on a laptop. I've gone to customize and changed it to "hide icons and notifications" for this particular program, but it still shows.... is there a way to get rid of this?

A:Hiding Icons In system tray

Is it for a bluetooth, wifi or what special function on what computer model? Did you hit Apply(if available) after changing on customize notification? Try using Mike Lin's StartupCPL and download the Standalone EXE Version (34 kb) and look for launch manager after launching certain application. Uncheck launch manager, Apply.

Hi,
I have windows XP Pro and every time I start my computer my systray icons are missing as of about a couple of days ago. The “Hide inactive Icons \ Customize” Options are Grayed Out in the taskbar properties page. I can’t even minimize winamp without re-opening it even though it is running in the Task Manager. I think I may have been playing with services.msc and I also have sp1 installed. how do i restore it bk? thx..

Hi all,

Im trying to change the system tray icons in windows 7 home premium but it doesnt work. I tried it with a program called PS Tray Factory and it crashed my explorer.exe. Seems like its not compatible to windows 7 yet.

Anyone know of another way to change them?

A:Changing system tray icons.

You can take ownership (Take Ownership Shortcut ) of the appropriate dll files that generates the system Trey icons, and then back them up (for restoration of the originals , if needed) and replace them with the modified ones.

For example, SndVolSSO.dll for system trey sound icon, ActionCenter.dll for action center icon ,etc. they are situated in C:\Windows\System32

In deviantart.com, you may have a lot of nice system trey icons

Hello

I wonder if anyone has come across this problem.

I recently installed a small UPnP program (TwonkyMedia) which I use to stream music to a player.

After the installation, most of the icons in the system tray just disappeared! These include icons like Google Calendar Sync and volume control icon, the icon used to eject the USB drive, for example. Most of the icons that disappeared are of programs in the Start Up folder.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Although no icons, most of the programs seem to work fine. Google Calender Sync, for example, still works silently.

Thanks.

Thanaset

Welcome to Seven Forums JOY6679. Do you run any cleaning or registry programs? Some can and will reset the icons. If you set them the way you like and restart, are they changed right away, or only after the PC is shut off and then restarted?

I've noticed a lot lately that the icon for my backup software is not appearing. It will appear if I click on the software. I have it set to alway be shown and it isn't showing itself.
My computer is about 1 & 1/2 years old.
I should mention that I have a Win 7 HP laptop computer.

A:Not all system tray icons are appearing

Welcome to TSF,

Go to Start (Windows Orb) > Run, if run isn't enabled go to Search and type msconfig.exe
then click on the Startup tab, look for the back-up software and click on the Check box if there isn't one already then restart you laptop.

Hello:

In Win7, I have two icons for "Speakers" (21 % in my case) and "Network Internet Access". How can I get rid of the doubles?

thanks,

Hans L

A:Double icons in system tray

Download and install CCleaner (free app).
Once installed, open Ccleaner and look at the left hand side, scroll to the botton and check 'Tray notification cache' and then click the big Run Cleaner button at the bottom right side.
Now, in task manager, end explorer.exe. Then, under task manager, click File and click New Task(Run). In the box, type explorer.exe and press Enter.
