No display on ThinkPad T500

Q: No display on ThinkPad T500

I have an old ThinkPad T500 that I was planning to give to my younger brother so he can do school work. Running Windows Vista Ultimate. A few months back, the internal display was acting intermittently, meaning it would not display anything (dark screen) but if you connected an external monitor, it would work fine. After a second or third reboot, the internal display would come on. This morning I turned it on and the monitor had parallel color lines in various patterns. I can hear the laptop running and booting up. After a couple of minutes, I plugged in an external monitor - nothing. I rebooted the machine and the same color pattern was displaying on the internal display. This time, the external monitor came on and booted up in 800 x 600 mode. When I went into Device Manager > Display it shows "Standard VGA Adapter". I recall that this laptop comes with switchable graphics between the Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (256 MB). Is the video card bad or is it just the actual display?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It could be both, difficult to say without having the actual ThinkPad at hand.

I don't remember by heart the BIOS settings in the T500, but please try going to the BIOS (press F1 right after turning on the laptop) and go to "Config" and "Display", select only the integrated graph, save and reboot. Keep us posted how it goes...

Hopefully that would fix the screen problems...

I have a T500 that I've used for a couple of years and it does well enough for me but I thought about using the slot occupied by my Gobi 2000 WAN card to install a M.2 SSD drive for additional storage.  Specificially, I chose a Samsung 850 EVO.   Windows 7 will not recognize it as anything other than a "Bluetooth Peripheral Device" and cannot locate drivers for it.  Samsung Magician will not recognize it, either, and I do not see anything in the BIOS that would allow me to activate the device.  At any rate, my O/S reads the device but cannot load drivers for it. Am I correct in concluding that I cannot use a M.2 storage device in this particular model? Thanks!

About three weeks ago I bought a Thinkpad T500. It used to run Windows Vista, but I got rid of that and added Linux Mint. When I first bought the computer it would not turn on if it was unplugged, but I figured I just needed to buy a new battery. New battery came in and it actually registers it and says it is charging, but the problem is it is stuck at 53% and I can not unplug it without it turning off. I tried looking up a solution; I unplugged and removed the battery then held on to the power button for a minute and powered it on again, but that did not work: stilled only turned on while plugged in. There was another solution that involved turing it on with the power cord and not the battery then removing the drivers for the power cord and restarting the computer, which should have it reinstall all the battery drivers, but I could not do that because I got rid of Windows Vista and I could not replicate the process in Linux Mint(I am new to Linux. Here is the video I was trying to follow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx62t6qZ34U). I did try to look for the drivers for this solutions, but the "driver manager" on Linux does not pop anything up. I am not even entirely sure if this solution will fix my problem. Not entirely sure what to do next. Any suggestions will help.

I have two identical (except for user-added programs and files) ThinkPad T61s. One stopped working, so I pulled the hard drive from it and seated it into the second one. It booted right up, no problems whatsoever. I've interchanged the hard drives multiple times with no issues but feel it's only a matter of time before the constant switching damages one of the drives or the working laptop. I decided to purchase another ThinkPad to prevent that and found a T500 minus the hard drive. Given I could swap hard drives in and out on the T61, I stupidly assumed if I seated one of the T61 hard drives into the T500, it too would boot with no problem and I'd have two working ThinkPads once again. Unfortunately during the boot, the BSCD made an appearance. I ran System Repair but it could not fix the issue. I removed that drive and seated the second T61 hard drive into the T500 and the same thing happened.

The T61 and T500 are very close to identical, but I'm guessing that they use very different drivers. Hence the BSOD. I don't want to format the T61 drive, but prefer to be able to boot from the T61 hard drive with all the files and settings on it intact.

I thought perhaps I could download and install the T500 drivers onto the T61 hard drive, then try booting the T500 again. Or maybe download the drivers to a flash drive and install them through SETUP (F2 or F12) without the hard drive, then reseating the T61 hard drive and attempt booting from it again.

Hey everyone. Just to give some back story on the T500 I received from a computer repair friend of mine. It came with WinXP installed on it (although is licensed for Win7Pro OA). ABout 6 months ago I installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on it as to get away from using WinXP since it is no longer supported by Microsoft. It was only after doing some physical maintenance on it that I had noticed the Win7Pro sticker on the bottom on the laptop. Problem is, about 4 months into using Ubuntu, I wanted to go back to WinXP and upgrade to Win7Pro, as I have the valid license for it. I successfully restored WinXP from local backup on the hard drive and everything seemed fine. Until one day I turned on the laptop and my WiFi adapter module stopped working. I did some basic troubleshooting from reinstalling drivers to some advanced CLI commands. None worked and I couldn't consult Microsoft obviously. I found what I could from everyone else online only to be stuck with a non-working adapter. However, that is only a little bit of the problem. Recently, I attempted to boot the laptop and when I did, it got so far before giving me an error saying this, "NTLDR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" and it does this over and over no matter what I try to do. I have attempted to insert a flash drive with a fresh Ubuntu ISO on it and boot from that, but what I am thinking is that somehow, somewhere that the HDD has encountered an error whilist rewriting WinXP files during a bootup or some... The magnesium rollcage on the left side of the display has broke when I tried closing the laptop. The hinge got somehow stuck, and I coulnd't close the lid, so I tried to apply a tiny bit of force. Unfortunately, being a very fragile and soft material, magnesium (along with the plastic part that holds the bottom left screw) broke. I have managed to get the left hinge moving again, but now the display is being held by only right hinge, which isn't enough to support a 15 inch screen. Oh and closing it is a pain. Lenovo say that they can't fix it for some odd reason, even though it's still on the warranty. (probably because they can't understand what i'm trying to explain). Though I didn't open it yet, I can conclude from looking at it that I'm going to need a new rollcage, new outer LCD shell (that black top lid), and a new set of hinges. I can replace it myself, fully understanding it'd void my warranty, as long as I get my laptop working again. I need it for work. Where can I get a new rollcage, outer shell and a pair of hinges? Thank you. This is a Thinkpad T500-2082 which still has 243 days of warranty.

I'm running a lenovo T500 thinkpad, and it's relatively new - that is, I bought it last winter - but recently, I've been having what seems to be a hardware problem. Or, at least, that's what the guys over in the Virus and Malware removal section are telling me:

Because from time to time, my laptop has decided it's just going to go ahead and shut itself down. Completely. No lights, no nothing - pressing the power button doesn't do anything. I almost always have it plugged into a socket, and that light won't show either - I've found that taking the battery out of the laptop and letting it sit for a little before putting the battery back in usually gets the laptop to work again.

It's only happened recently, but it's happened twice in the past week - which is a little more than bothersome, since the antivirus I have runs a full scan when it happens.

I've noticed that my laptop gets a little hot - not too hot that I can't touch it - but as far as I know, I've never had a problem with overheating or anything similar, which leaves me in the dark about this entire thing.

I'm really hoping that this doesn't turn out to be a hardware problem; I should still be on warranty, but I'm a little - okay, that's a lie, I'm pretty damn - scared to try and open up my laptop and fiddle with anything.

Hope this is enough information for someone out there to give me some sort've idea of wha... Read more

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

I've done a lot of research on this and am still stumped.   My trusty T500 started to do random shutdowns a few weeks back.  Sometimes it would restart with no issue, sometimes I would need to briefly remove the CMOS battery to get it to restart.  Now it will only "try" to start, showing the power on, the "Z" light and the bluetooth  indicator light but no Thinkpad splash screen or POST.   I can hear the disk start to spin then.... nothing.   I have ordered a new CMOS battery and have tried the remedies such as removing RAM, CMOS, etc with no change.   The computer was working quite will before this situation.  I have seen suggestions that I have a bad poly-fuse and that would make some sense if it was resetting, in partial failure or failed. Has anyone experienced this and what did you do to resolve? Thanks,Dave

What video card does your system have?   If you have the Intel Graphics Media Adapter(GMA) 4500MHD adapter, Intel is not releasing a Windows 10 driver, but you can sometimes install the Windows 7 driver in compatibility mode, and it will work in Windows 10. First go here on Intel's website and download the Intel Graphics Media Driver for Windows 7/Vista (make sure it is of the same 64-bit type as your Windows 10) and save it to your desktop, or somewhere else that will be easy to find. Right-click the downloaded driver file, and then click Properties.Click the Compatibility tab.Click Change Settings for All Users.Click the box next to Run this Program in Compatibility Mode for:Using the drop-down menu select the Operating System that matches the Operating System of the driver downloaded (e.g. Windows 7)Touch or click Apply, then click OK.Click OK againRight-click the downloaded driver file, then select Run as Administrator Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics for Previous Generation Intel® Processorshttps://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81503/Intel-HD-Graphics-for-Previous-Generation-Intel-Proce... Good Luck, PS   If still having issues, see the post below. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_devices/gma-drivers-or-windo...

Hello Forum.I have a Thinkpad T500 which I love though the screen isn't the brightest.I have installed a good SDD, and it runs Win 10 very satisfactory. The LCD monitor is a handsome 1680x1050, almost as good as my old T61p.In November something strange happened, possibly just when Windows did an update. The screen suddenly was reduced to about half-size and I had to reboot. After that, the best resolution I get is 1400x1050 even if the Monitor itself still is a 1680x1050.I updated of the windows driver, but this one is from 2006 and is obviously not the bad guy.  Driver Management concluded the process to install driver  tplcd.inf_amd64_cc45c1c6a7fd9bed\tplcd.inf for Device Instance ID  DISPLAY\LEN4053\1&8713BCA&0&UID0 with the following status: 0x0.In the boot panels I have not found any parameters that I could think of doing impact. This is not a crisis, but I miss the 1680x1050.Do anyone know what to do next?

After a couple months of flawless use, I'm having trouble with my display on this old model.

For a day or so, the display would go dark at random times, requiring a restart, after which it was fine for awhile.

Now it has gone out completely.

The funny thing is is that it's not "completely" out. I can still make out, but just barely, the display. It's too dark to read or navigate, but I can tell the desktop is there somewhere.

I've plugged an external monitor into it and it has worked fine.

I'm hoping it's a simple fix. The battery is very old and won't charge over 15%, and if that is the problem I'll be glad, but this is with it plugged into the ac adapter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hey everyone,
I recently ran into the issue that the backlight on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 for the display wont light up ( i took the LCD and shined a flashlight behind it to ensure that it was being digitized which it was). It worked fine one day until I turned on the laptop and the screen was black. I have reseated all the RAM, bought new cables for the display, a new inverter for the display, and even a new screen. I have unplugged the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and tried holding the power button for long amounts of time with the battery and power cord disconnected. Holding the power button down and restarting fixed my Thinkpad T410 when the same issue happened 3 times before, but it wont fix this issue. All of this never happened on the T410 for the 2 years I had Windows 7 on it but now both machines run Windows 10 Pro. I removed the hard drive from the W520 just in case it was a problem with the drive. Also I am testing the screen with the laptop display assembly disassembled. Please help, I am lost as to what I can do.

Also check with the Lenovo Settings Metro App and the "Enable dynamic brightness control" is off. The resolution is set to native resolution in the case of this unit 1920x1080. Any ideas???

Hello, I bought P50 last July with: Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHzNVIDIA Quadro M2000M3840x2160 non-touch Display When I was buying this laptop, I saw that a few people complaining the color of 1080P display was bad, therefore I chose the 4K display. But during this half year I found 4K hasn?t really had a compatible solution with all software, specially I have to use various types of apps. Then the 4K really becomes a burden to me since some apps looks very bad and I often have to switch resolutions for different apps. I just want to know if it?s possible to change my display to 1080P. I don?t care about the color that much, but more the compatibility. I?m still in warranty and want to change display by Lenovo?s after-sales service. Has anyone had similar experience changing it? Or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.Best,Chen

Hi I just bought a Thinkpad P70 with a 4K panel and have a rather annoying issue. If my Power Options are set to Turn the display off after i.e 10 minuttes, the display is obviously turned off after 10 minuttes. When I touch the mouse or press a key on the keyboard the display lights up a bit but nothing is displayed on the screen. The only way I can get the display up and running again is to press and hold the power button so the machine goes to sleep. I can then press the power button again and my login screen is displayed and everything works as expected. btw. I am runing Windows 10 x64 and the graphics drivers are the latest from Lenovo´s site. I am suspecting that the Intel HD P530 driver is to blame.Has anyone seen this issue and have a good idea on how to fix it?

Hey everyone,

All of a sudden, my display will flicker, and eventually turn off on my LCD panel. Every time i change the display modes (lcd, external monitor, or both) it comes back for a short time, but then flickers and shuts off. I know it is not a driver problem because the display works with an external monitor. SO, if anyone knows what i should do next.....PLZZZZ tell me, because I WANT MY LAPTOP BACK!!! lol...its like a desktop now.
