Various problems, not sure which is the real one

Q: Various problems, not sure which is the real one

My Toshiba-Vista laptop got a HiJack virus...running Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware got rid of it.
However, on boot, it would throw "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working".
I tried to update patches from Microsoft, but that erred out with Code 80072EFE. Doing some research on that, I found to run TDSSKILLER and COMBOFIX. Trying to install TDSSKILLER erred out after 80% installed. COMBOFIX threw a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" error, dumped and crashed.
I can run in safe mode ok, but COMBOFIX still throws the DRIVER error.
Both Malwarebytes and AntiSuperSpyware run clean.
I suspect all is from a virus, but I have no idea where to start.
I have attached a HiJackThis log. It is under this in the Vista forum. Please help.

I also entered this under Vista forum...not sure where it belonged.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Now that your log is properly posted, here, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the logs you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Removal Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

sounds like your video card is having issues. I would make sure your card is not overheating for one, and make sure your case/video card is not covered with dust.

HWMonitor should provide you with some information on the temperature. Other things to look at is updating your video card drivers.

I go to my backup computer this morning to find out I basically can't do anything on it. I can't get to any network connections. When I try to open Internet Explorer, it just flashes on then off right away. I can't even copy and paste a file from one directory to another. I tried to do a system restore, but when I go there, it tells me that System Restore cannot protect your computer. Please shut down and try again. Which I did, but that didn't seem to work either. Same message after rebooting. So I'm stuck. The computer worked fine last night, and I noticed when I shut down that it installed some windows updates. Since then, nothing works. A:Real Big problems

Not that anyone was in any real big hurry to help out, but I figured out my problem. I guess some type of Trojan got onto my computer and renamed my svchost.exe file to svchost.exe.bak, meaning I couldn't run anything that used that file, which is pretty much everything on the computer. Check this if you're having the same kind of problems that I eluded to.

Basically what I did was took the svchost file from a different computer and loaded it onto the infected computer and everything was fine. It's located in C:\Windows\system32. I know I could have just renamed the .bak version, but who knows what else the virus did to the file. I didn't really want to take a chance with it.

Hi, let me start by saying I'm new to this so if I've posted in the wrong thread... sorry, I figure my computer uses XP so post in the XP help section? Second of all, it's become fairly apparent that I have little to no idea about anything to do with computers. So here's the problem: A week ago whilst enjoying an episode of the uni on my computer it blue screened. It's happened before so I wasn't too worried until I tried to boot it up again, no dice. It opened to this screen that it opens to every other time the computer starts, the express gate screen. It's an ASUS motherboard... I think. And you can either not move your mouse and let it get into the bios then eventually into xp OR you can click one of a few buttons that either take you to skype, the express gate internet browser bios set up.. blah blah blah. Anyways, I let it boot as usual but it got to the bios then didn't go any further. I plugged in a different monitor and it did the same thing, only this time I could see a blinking white underscore, it doens't move past this point. I went into the BIOS set up and... well, didn't do anything because I have no idea what any of it means. Then I plugged in a DVI to HDMI cable and plugged the computer into a HDMI socket on my monitor, it skipped the express gate screen and went right to the bios scree, then went to the very first opening screen like it had reset itself, then went to the bios screen, then to the white underscore thing again. So my question is what in the hel... Read more

A:Real problems booting...

when you got to the BIOS screen did the hard drive show? Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their diagnostic program, and burn to disk as a .ISO. Use that to boot the problem pc and run the diagnostic. You could also try if you have the xp disk going to recovery console and running chkdsk /r

Is the a way to fix it?

What is a good program for removing Real Player and programs such as this?

greetings:

I've been experiencing a rather odd problem with my real player recently. My player crashes every time I to load a .rm or ram. file from a web site. The normal troubleshooting hasn't worked. Failed attempts of removing all "Real" releated programs and reinstalling them have been quite frustrating. Does anyone have advice on how to alleviate the problem. Possibly a setting in the registry that is causing windows to automatically shut down real when launched. I can write back with the general fault code if that would be of any assistance.

Hi,

I had XP Pro running on my machine (for about a year), but recently decided to re-install as there were some problems i couldn't fix etc etc.
I put in the XP Pro disk (when in windows) and it said it was going to restart my machine in order to install windows. It did restart and install windows (although a little too quickly for my piece of mind - perhaps not a full install?), but now i have apparently TWO versions of Pro on my machine.
Ok, so i thought i'd simply format my HDD and re-install, only i can't. I have no DOS and whenever the install tries to format the drive i want it to it says it can't because there are temporary files needed or something.

So, i can't get into windows, i can't use the install CD to format and i can't use DOS.

Suggestions?

Matt.

p.s. i have tried booting from CD, it says its invalid or something.

Hi there,

This morning I started having some real problems with my PC, usually I try to keep it real clean and it seems to have worked up til now.. I keep getting the blue memory dump screen with the comp restarting, then on reboot saying recovered from serious error.

I tried doing a virus scan on trend micro, but it keeps rebooting before its done, which is a pain. My computer is also taking a long time to boot so I wondered if it was something that could be indentified from my startup processes in HJT, so I'll post a log. I have booted into safe mode and both ad aware and S+D come up clean, used CCleaner, ermm.. yeh thats about all I've done so far. If someone could look at this for me I'd appreciate it. gonna stop witing now before my computer resatarts >.< lol

There is nothing malicious showing in the log so let's dig deeper.

First, the obvious. Check to make sure all cables and connections are not loose.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop.
Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Reboot and post the scan log from Panda please.

I'm having several problems with real player and Nero 7.

1. With some of my Real Player RAM files I'm being told I need a plugin for the file, I don't know where I get ones to go with the specific file types- does anyone know?

2. If I insert a blank CD-R disc it says the disc is full! I know for a fact that there is nothing on the disc but I am being told otherwise- why? It is a trial version of nero 7 by the way.

3. Nero tells me it cannot cache the files before it burns them, why not? They are prefectly normal files?

4. When I cue several files up on to be burnt to a disc on real player it says "Will not fit on disc". I don't understand, it's a blank disc and I've checked and double checked that there's enough room. There's only a few files anyway and I'm burning them onto a data cd.

If anyone can help me with any of the above it would be hugely appreciated!

A:I'm having some big problems with Real Player/Nero 7- please help!!!

1) Real Player automatically download plugin to play the files

2) Are u sure ur puttin tat bland cd in cd-writer or dvd writer

3) dunno abt it

4) Are u tryin to burn an audio cd. If that's the case that cd can occupy only max of 22 songs(it depends on how much long are ur songs not their size)

Just did a clean install of Vista 32bit.

All working OK ... one app I use requires that I have Real Player installed.(NCH Switch for .RA conversion to MP3)

I installed lastest ver of Real Player .. and the app that required it worked OK.

However if I for example play a CD ... if I select Real Player to play it back ... sound is OK, but if I select WMP there is no audio.
The issue I have is that all other apps that give audio out (incl Vista OS sounds) do not work.

I tried working through many options ... but as soon as I de-installed Real Player all apps (and OS sounds) all OK again.

I have to have Real Player installed or Switch will not work

Hi all,

I run windows 2000, and have recently started to have password boxes pop up nearly every time I visit a web page. The addresses the boxes display lead me to believe they are ads of some kind:
------------------------
www.burstnet.com
ads.msn.com
global.msads.net
www.fastclick.net
...to name but a few.
-------------------------
The first one by the way, appears everytime I visit a page here! I'm pretty sure this is all being caused by the fact that I ran AdAware about a week ago, and deleted ALL the components it found! Obviously it got rid of something that most websites use to link into their ads, but i've no idea what! What on earth can I do to stop these boxes appearing? None of my friends can give me a clue, so you could be my last port of call before I formatt and start again.

Thanks for any help,

Tom.

I manually update 'Windows Update'. When I went to the site yesterday it just refused to work ... all that would load on the page was ...

"Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website?

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing it to run."
I also had a Manage Add-ons icon just above the taskbar with a red circle and line through it which I've never seen before.

If I leave the page up long enough it eventually changes to this ...

Hi Everyone,

I run Windows 98 on a desktop using Netscape 4.75 and I.E 5.0. I currently have had Real Player 7.0 for about 2 years with no problems. I don't know if it's a bad computer day for me or what but here is the situation.

I went to a site that uses a utility called Yahoo Media Helper, this little do-hickey checks the media players on your system and asks your Internet Connection Speed. (I have Windows Media Player 6.1, but also Real Player 7.0) I think real player is better sound quality so it asked which player I wanted to use and I clicked on Real Player 7.0.

Whenever I go to a site that uses Real Audio, I get the following error message:

"Currently, Autoupdate has no plug in to play your selection." I clicked on "more information", scrolled down to my player and it suggested that I install these little plug-in components (Only about 650 kbs...no big deal) anyway, I did that and I still get the same message about the plug in issue. I tried just opening Real Player also, and going to one of the "pre-set radio stations that they give you." Sometimes I get the message about the "Autoupdate has no plug in to play your selection" but just now I get "Connection to server could not be established, you may be exeriencing network problems" I don't know if this is a server issue or a Real Player issue.

On more thing, if I click on "Help" in Real Player 7.0, and then "contents", the help... Read more

The powersupply is an enermax 350w (might be 400w, it is pretty new). The system is running Windows XP professional and is fully patched, with Norton Antivirus 2002 running on it, behind a firewall on my network.

My problem is that everything runs fine for a while, maybe its over 2 months since my last reinstall, but now its hopeless to use. Late one night, I got the BSOD and when i rebooted, it couldnt find my hard disk. This continued until i turned the power off on the front of the case, after this the hard disk was found and windows rebooted.

Now tho, the pc is slow. its as if something else is taking up the cpu cycles. ive looked in taskmanager and nothing is there apart from svchosts and the usual suspects. I went into lots of tweak sites and turned off lots of services, and have improved the boot time from over 1.5 mins to less than a minute, but when i do stuff (like using my browser or opening "my computer", the pc freezes and disks alot, before getting where it was going.

during games, the screen may freeze as the pc disks to find stuff too.

Hello all

Well a weekend of jooy. To explain the problm I have a Linsys wireless router which has been working faultlessly until this weekend and now I am in a position where only one machine can connect at a time as this throws the rest out. No security on the router (temp measure to test connectivity) and all drivers are correct and up-to-date. There has been no problem at all, so rather that run through things that have happened, I just wondered if I am doing something really stupid. Machines are running XP Home, XP Professional (SP2) and Vista Ultimate (I know, I know, but it has had no problems for literally months).

Please help or I may throw the router out of the window

I tried working on the functioning one and switch user to the other and that is when it went blank. (black screen and nothing)

A:one of the screen names is having real problems

Do NOT switch user, but Log Out, then log in to the other account.
There seems to a problem with copying the data from the hard drive to the new user account.

WMP 11 and Real Player won't play sound with the DVD playback on my friends computer.

I've done tons of troubleshooting and reboots.

I've adjusted the sound drivers, and even redownloaded it direct from the manufacturer.

It only happens when I play DVD's.

CD's play fine. The system sounds play perfectly, so I know its a problem with the two programs.

I'm at my wits end on this...

btw... the computer is a Dell Inspiron 9300, runs Windows XP 2000 Professional, Intel Centrino Processor

When I tried to play a video stream earlier, I got an error message about a missing file in my Temp Internet files. An attempt at playing an audio stream got the same response. I tried to uninstall Real Player, but for some reason that didn't work, as I got an error message about missing an uninstaller component. When I tried to reinstall it, that wouldn't work either, as when it had to uninstall Real Player, the aforemention uninstaller component error occured. I tried redownloading the latest version of Real Player, but the same error occured, and when it did install, my attempts to play streams cause AOL to crash, and it won't play regular RP files at all.

What has happened, and what can I do to fix this ?

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right place:

Lenovo t400
Vista 32 OS

A day ago I started getting browser redirects to happili.com

I ran malwarebytes, which found the (apparent) Trojan and needed to reboot to remove it, however on reboot I recall there was an issue and the browser redirects continued.

Malwarebytes could no longer find anything though, and neither could Spybot S&D, or TDSSKiller.

I searched around and found a suggestion to try panda securities free remover for that (pretty sure it was Panda Anti-Rootkit). I ran it and it requested a reboot - said something about a library or dll file perhaps? I don't remember exactly.

Now however when I try to boot after I login at the vista users login screen I get a blue screen that says it is shutting down to protect my system. It will then continue doing this unless I try to go to safe mode -- then i am forced to go directly to lenovo's thinkvantage rescue and recovery.

I am afraid to try anything else without further advice. I'd like to not have to restore my system if possible but can't even boot to safe mode.

If someone can help me out of this jam I'd be forever greatful.

Edit: the more I Google around about this the more I think the Panda Anti-Rootkit caused the issue (maybe because not compatible with system?)

Any help very much appreciated.

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 with SATA. 2 x HDD. 1 Samsung 160Gb and one Seagate 200Gb.

I want to reinstall XP home SP2 from the Samsung and reinstall to my Seagate and then once fully up and running on the seagate transfer the files across and format the Samsung. Should be easy enough.

I can't install XP on the Seagate 200Gb hard disk. It wont see it when booting from the installation disk of XP home with the Samsung disconnected for safety. Tried F6 with latest drivers from Gigabyte and flashed the bios to the latest issue.

XP home meanwhile on the samsung can see seagate hard disk from within windows and the bios recognises them both.

So whats up ????? I've tried both Seagate tools run numerous tests and all working fine - Just windows can't see it when I try to install XP SP2

Its taken two weeks of evenings to get this far!

and i've used r kill and rouge killer anyway none of them helped me,I mean i found Trojans, and all kinds of critters hidden deep in the windows registry,I believe its a .dll it has to be oh and I also used Invisible Stealth Mode key logger Removal tool,by Strong Hold Security, but Everytime I used it,it installed a B.S program in my window's x86 folder under the folder Skill brains
I mean I could delete it and use the software and a different program would be under that folder,I read a txt that was in that folder,it had so much Evil Commands for the Virus to Do it was awful .anyway Running a Acer inspire I think Windws 7 x86
not that that matters, just I see people acting like that's a big deal, also sorry about the bad grammer holding son while he sleeps
anyway thank you for your time

Hi,

First, I'm not sure if this kind of discussion is allowed here, so, I'm not sure if I have the right to ask this but if this topic was to be closed, I would like to be informed about where is the right place to post this.

But I wanted to question what are the real threats presented to XP so people "MUST" upgrade as I see many people say. They say it's an obsolete OS (although many applications and plugins still install just fine) and incredibly unsecure.

So, let's say that the user it's not a total beginner on computers (would happily click on the "get your prize" ads and read fake bank emails and get scared) nor a total expert (works with security in an IT sector of a company and already seen enough to be scared of security holes).
It's just a guy who knows how to keep an antivirus updated and to enter only known major sites (facebook, outlook.com, google websites, netflix, amazon, etc.) and not to download software from blogs, and rarely reads email, using social networks to communicate instead.

What kind of threat is this user really exposed to? Like, in detail, what security hole it is and what does it do to the PC, that should urge this user so much to upgrade and get away from XP, a known extremely stable OS?

Really makes me curious to see people recomend so passionately to upgrade just because of the EOL of the OS.

First, thanks for all the good work you guys are doing.

Sept4 early morning, I was browsing through a Tumblr account, clicked a pic and was redirected to a tab which I couldn't close. Back button on my browser wouldn't work either. Had to Ctrl+alt+del to close my browser.

I ran a scan with AVG immediately after and got the ff. results:

A:IRP Hooks detected by AVG Free - false positives, or real problems?

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.    Scan with aswMBRPlease download aswMBR ( 4.5MB ) to your desktop.Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, and click Run.There will be a short delay before the next dialog box comes up. Good Thursday Evening Forum Members, I am totally new here, so, if I make some mistakes please forgive me. Here is my problem: I am using Xara Web Designer Premium 7 to develop a real estate website for my dear wife. I am running an ASUS CM 5671 computer and Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bits).

On one of my website pages I want to place a free "mortgage loan calculator widget offered on many mortgage & real estate websites. When I attempt to copy the code for the widget, it does not work even thought the window opens up that shows "copy". Other instances of the "copy/paste" process where I copy text from a webpage or technical artical is not a problem. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have been coping and pasting stuff for a few years now and wondered why what I am doing does not work now. Thank you all for any assistance you feel kind enough to offer me.

A:Problems with Copy & Pasting Real Estate Widgets on various websites

Hello again forum team members, I noticed that "Microsoft Word (2007)" has a "clipboard". I thought that Windows 7 Home Premium did not offer a "clipboard" as such. With this find, I've tried to copy and then paste the "widget" code onto the Microsoft Word's clipboard. I then copy the code from there and paste it onto my webpage. However, all I see is the actual text of the code and not the real estate "widget". Yes, it's a little frustrating, but I've got to move forward because this is an important element that needs to be added to my website.

So, to make a long story short, when I copy the code of the widget from the real estate website, I must then paste it onto the Microsoft Word's "clipboard". I then copy if from the clipboard to paste the code on my webpage. However, only the code text shows and not the image of the widget. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for all assistance. Bob
