T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

Q: T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode. How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

Hello, I have a brand new T480s with Core I7 / 24 GB Ram / SSD. After resuming from sleep, I get a black screen for 30 - 40 seconds till I get the login screen. Also, restarting takes so long sometimes (around 4 - 5 mins). Any solution, I don't think this should be expected from a laptop with these specs.

I cannot tell the difference between these very well. When I build them out with i7.8550/WPro/16G/FHD/nvme512G/fingerprint/backlit keyboard they all are within $100 of each other. It looks like the Carbon may(?) have a better standard screen, or at least a brighter one? (I only need FHD non-touch.)   Are the keyboards all the same?  Is one better / larger? Is there any underlying speed difference in the motherboard?  I can't tell why I would want one over the other.  Is one of them quieter?  More durable?  Capable of supporting two drives?Help!

A:X1 Carbon / T480s / T480--help me choose!!

Also in the mix is the P1--which somehow works with my employee discount to be *cheaper* than the equivalently specc'ed x1 Carbon, and is therefore in the same mix of "which to buy?"Of course the P1 would have an unused HD slot which is not a bad thing, and also a graphics card. So maybe I should go that route...?

Im going to get the i5 with the wqhd display. I'll add 16GB memory and a large SSD after buying.Mainly doing IT related stuff: programming, VMs, Linux, etcI've done an exhausting amount of reading on pros and cons on the throttling and cooling of both models. If I buy the T480s I won't get the MX150 since the T480s comes with two heat pipes with or without it.If I buy the T480 I feel like I need to get the MX150(but I dont really want to), because that's the only way to get the two heat pipes. I'm just trying to get the best results from the i5.I want to dualboot linux so I'm thinking its best to not get the MX150. Both options cost about the same. I don't want to deal with major throttling issues or a painful Linux experience. This is mainly about the cooling tbh.I almost prefer the T480 for the sata 2.5", more battery, and expandable to 32GB ram.BUT i dont want the MX150 so im concerned about throttling the i5 with only one heat pipe.So since the T480 comes with two pipes I'd imagine it would be better cooling? But then im sacrificng the upgradability. I've tried to find results on the i5 in the t480 without the MX150. Not sure if heat is an issue, but I've seen a lot about throttling issues.Thoughts?

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

Windows Update is pushing an Intel graphics driver for T480 and T480s that is broken on Windows 10 Pro 1803 OEM. The recommended update on the Lenovo Support site is also broken. After Windows Update has installed this driver, the screen goes black and I have a blinking cursor. The only thing that works is to turn the laptop off and on again but then after initializing windows I'm supposed to be getting the login screen but instead I get a completely backlit black screen that doesn't respond to anything - no cursor, no blinking, nothing. The workaround is topower off and on 3 times in order to go into safe modeuninstall the graphics card driver in Device Manager and check the box to delete the driver fileschange from Yes (recommended) to No (your device might not work as expected) in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Installation Settings->Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices.I've experienced this on 2 T480s and 1 T480 in the last 30 hours, so I know it's a general issue. I can reproduce the issue with a brand new laptop fresh out of the box, not domain-joined. The driver that works is from March 2018. Any drivers after this date seem to produce the above issue. The issue doesn't seem to exist on Windows 10 Pro 1709.

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

Hi,I have tried to install windows 10 enterprise 2016 LTSB, on two T480s and both have the and issue now with a black laptop display when I close the lid open the display again ("when I close the lid" is set to sleep). The windows installation is from the iso on a usb. And just after the Windows installation I have the issue. and it is still there after full windows update and lenovo update. When I got the 2. laptop it worked with the orginal image (start the pc for the first time and let it finish), but after re-installation I got the issue. I have tried a few things without luck (turn of fast startup, disable secure boot, monitor profile update) but i cant make it work. If I attach an external monitor I get a dispaly on this external monitor (via hdmi), and I can see one Generic PNP Monitor (the external monitor), it seems like that the internal display is disconnected if choose show hidden devices in the device manager, and can't be enabled (i have also tried to rescan for new hardware without any luck). When I reboot  the display is back again. I dont have this issue on the t470 model with the same approach. What do I miss, some driver/windows setting or ? Thanks in advanceregardsMartin

Lenovo Facebook support sent me here to post the issue as they expect it to be a Firmware/Driver problem: There is a serious compatibility issue between the T480s and the iPhone8 - tested on various units of both devices, with various cables. All BIOS/FW/SW/Drivers on both devices were updated, issues remain before and after Updates: It is not possible to connect iPhone8 via USB to T480s - or only after several attempts or a reboot. On the right USB port connection goes on and off in seconds, on the left port charging connection remains stable, but no data connection is posible. We tested this with 4 different T480s, 6 different iPhone8 models and various different cables - therefore it is definitely a FW/Driver Issue on the Lenovo side - as the phones work with any other Notebook. If the phone however is attached to the right port while the Notebook is booting, iPhone8 asks for authorization (while T480s boots) and then everything works fine. Lenovo Facebook support says this clearly points out to a driver/firmware issue. Trying to plug in the USB port not all the way in but leave a 2-3mm space before the USB cable fully contacts the port (as suggested by Lenovo Facebook support) does not help. Sooo there we are - we tested and replicated this issue with several brand new T480s-machines (core i5-8350U) and a number of different iPhone8 with different cables. What solution does the Lenovo engineers propose? BestCarLazar

Hello all,

I would just like to start off by saying that this is my first post. So, thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

As the title suggests, I am having issues waking my computer. I have read through numerous threads with this same problem, but none of them seem to be having the same issues as I'm having.

Upon trying to wake my computer from sleep mode (forced sleep mode), it will either freeze and has to be reset or it has already reset itself and is sitting on the start up screen where it says something like, "Continue with previous Windows session," or "Reset and start a new Windows session."

If I choose "Continue with Previous Session" it says, "Loading Windows," but before it gets to the username welcome screen it freezes and has a blinking hyphen in the top left corner of the screen. When this happens I need to reset my computer yet again and choose the "Reset and start a new session" option.

Any ideas what might be happening? I have updated my drivers and checked my ram with Windows Memory Utility.

Oh, and just today I was testing Sleep Mode. I put the monitor to sleep but couldn't wake it back up either. I could hear the computer running but the display would not turn on. So yet again, I had to reset the computer. Not sure if this was a coincidence or if it is related (which I'm thinking it is).

Now just some FYI's:

There are two physical USB C sockets. 1. The "official" one, it's known to be Thunderbolt 3 capable, controlled by an Alpine Ridge LP so x2 PCIe lanes and 1 DisplayPort is available when in TB3 and also the USB C port is DisplayPort Alternate Mode capable.2. The "docking port" one, nothing is known about it except it's very unlikely to be TB3 capable. But what about DisplayPort Alternate Mode ?  In other words, if you bought two USB C to DisplayPort adapters could you run two 4K @ 60Hz monitors? To compare my TP25 (and so the T470 and very likely the T470s) can run DP from the USB C port and another from the Pro/Ultra dock but the T480s dock is different.

I installed a CLARO Halo XT sound card and a 5770 graphics card and a 3d monitor this evening. I had much trouble with the sound card until I moved it from PCI slot 3 to slot 2. Slot 1 seems to be in between the slots that the 5770 takes up. Anyway by putting it in slot 2, it works BUT
the underneath of it lies very very close to the 5770, and the length of it extends to the fan area also. Guess just wondering about ventilation.

Anyone know if any harm is likely to come running it this way ?

I also acquired some new Energy Take 5 speakers and a old Yamaha Receiver on ebay. I need to run out tomorrow and get some 16 gauge and pick up the 79 " "desk" from Ikea. CAnt wait to test the new setup out !

A:Will CLOSE proximity of cards hurt ?

PCI slots shouldn't matter. If it works in one but not the other there would appear to be a hardware problem with the slot or that the BIOS is not seeing it. Resetting the BIOS may help, If your motherboard has chipset drivers, reinstalling the chipset drivers may also help getting the PCI slot to work.

BTW, I'm using an HT Omega "Striker 7.1" sound card.

My new T480s, with 16GB of ram and an Intel Core i7-8550U proccesser cannot turbo boost. I have seen from the intel website that this processer can indeed turbo boost to 4.00 GHZ, but I could not enable it. I installed the Turbo Boost Moniter and it says it is only 1.8GHZ. I have tried looking in the BIOS but I can't find it. Can anyone tell me why?

A:T480s Is said to be able to Turbo Boost, but it cannot.

What are running to acivate turbo boost?  This is a simplification, but turbo boost is a technology that allows a single demanding process to use more than one thread's cycles to act like the clock speed is faster. It is used when other threads are not being otherwise used.  Its use depends on the right kind of work being done.

Hi. My brand new T480s is giving me a rough time already. I bought it with the Fibocom L850-GL modem and inserted an AT&T sim. Today I wanted to upload 14 files totaling about 1.66gb over cellular as the upload speeds are much better in town than they are on the home internet. Also I have 48gb of data on the plan so let's ignore that. First question, why does it keep changing the network back to metered mode? Every time I turn cellular off and back on it's again marked as such. Even if the connection drops briefly and comes back on its own it is again metered. One drive refuses to upload on metered connections until I go into it and hit resume. If the connection drops briefly one drive pauses again as it is again metered. That's the first, and the less troublesome, issue believe it or not. The real problem I have is, once I do have one drive uploading, I can get speeds according to one drive of around 2.6 or 2.7mb/s. It'll do that for about 4 minutes or so, till it reaches around 80 to 100mb transfered, then the computer will just hickup and stop responding for a few seconds then come back, and now one drive is uploading at 0.0kb/s and my computer starts getting hot. Looking in task manager, I see that system is using 99 percent of the cpu, I'm talking about the system process and not speaking of some process running under the system account just to be extra clear. Btw I'm using a port of the windows 7 task manager, I don't like the wind... Read more

Hi there, When I looked at the Lenovo website where we can configure and purchase a notebook, I saw under T480s a discrete 2GB NVIDIA graphics card is included in models come with Intel 8350U and 8650U processors.  I looked at PRSEF and does not seem those models come with the NVIDIA card.   They look like they all come with Intel UHD 620 only. Would someone please kindly advise if this NVIDIA card available through config models online.   Thanks http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/i_pdf/ThinkPad.pdf

Hello, I was thinking about making a custom sticker to place on my T480s, and I wanted the background color of my sticker to approximate the body color of the laptop as closely as possible. I have been unable to find the actually RGB or CMYK color code for the signature Thinkpad "grey/back/carbon" color. Would anyone here happen to know what the color code in RGB or CMYK might be? Thanks,

I'am the happy owner of a new T480s, like I have been the happy owner on every model T4xxs since T431s. From the T480s it exchange the dock with a new "Lenovo ThinkPad Pro Docking Station", there not dock in buttom but in the side - and no problem there. My problem is the funktion of the dock, I do not now about is not working or it is a firmware problem. Connected to the Dock do I have a Philips 27" monitor with a resolution on 2560 x 1440, and this demand ether a displayport or a Dual-DVI - and I use a DisplayPort connection as I have done with the old Dock since the T440s... And I run with the Windows 10 enterprice solution where I expand the Screen (I see both the laptop and 27" Philips on DVI) My problem is when I startup, the 27" is 100% black, and I can see on the laptop screen, that it beleave there is conection to the primary 27" monitor - since mouse and login screen is there... Since I can login by Windows Hallo and face recornition by IR webcam, login is no problem... When it go into sleep it is the same problem. I then have to turn off power on the 27" monitor, then the programs go to the laptop as primary since the 27" is off. And then I can turn on the 27" again, and when this power up everything start to work... But it is verry irritating that it have to take -1 min on every statup to get the monitor work... I think it faster without a dock then... Is my Dock DOA, or do I nead to wait on a firmware update... HELP

Hi!We can?t wake them up ? tried on two devices. Updated BIOS and enabled WOL and studied doc?s, maybe not enough. We can do WOL once when AC is unplugged, but after shutdown from Windows (10, of course) ? it does not WOL anymore. Checked WX NIC settings, can?t sport anything missing or set wrongly, in our opinion. Any ideas?More thanks, Alar.
