I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there. Got a laptop with Windows 7 to which I want to hook up (regularly) an extra (USB) keyboard.
Would it use up a noticeable amount of power and RAM?
Thank you for your thoughts on that.

A:extra keyboard

No, keyboards use very little resources and power.

I got an adapter for a keyboard that is a PS/2 port so it would work in the USB. I found the keyboard in my dad's closet and thought it would be a good idea becasuse it has extra quick-click buttons on the side, like copy-paste, internet buttons, and music controls. I put it in the adapter, and it works, but the quick-click buttons do not. He never got any software with it and I don't know if it needed any.

It's a Gateway KB -0401.

I have a serial number on it if you need that too.

Can someone tell me how to get the quick click buttons working?

Try Medions site for keyboard drivers drivers. I would have tried to find it but the site wants to know your S/N. There is also a product support section worth checking out. It kinda sounds like something was removed via HJT when it shouldn't have.

Any Help would be much appreciated.

Oh yeah, the pc is running Windows xp Pro and it is a microsoft natural keyboard if that makes any difference. I have managed to do it using a program (Keystroke Converter) but I want to be able to do it more permanently as I cant afford to pay for this program.

Hello everyone. I'm wondering about something thats been bugging me for a bit? What are the extra keys on the keyboard for, or more to the point how does one configure them. The KB I use right now only has three extra keys, a sun, a moon, and another(?) I think for power, or stand bye?? But my sisters KB has mega, hers is a MSN 'netboard'. Is there somewhere I can learn how to utilize the extra keys. When I press any of them now they don't do anything?? Help is appreciated, but this is not a pressing,(pretty punny eh), matter, so please help those who really have a problem first! This is just something I have always wanted to know?? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one?? So Thanks again, Graiskye PS just to be clear I have done a pretty good search of archives before posting question, something I encourage ALL posters to do, saves redundant posts, and you will ALWAYS learn something. I browse the posts all the time just reading the titles and checking threads that interest? Peace, Grai.

The Sunday NY Times Week in Review (Jan 4, 2015) had an article about someone?s mother having to pay Bitcoin ransom in a ransom malware encryption attack.

At home, what should I do to prevent a ransom encryption attack, in addition to Avast AV (on my home Win 7 Pro 64-bit and my home XP Pro SP3) or Windows Defender (on my home Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit)?

One of the readers asked whether there?s an app that prevents encryption of a disk or partition unless there?s confirmation at the keyboard (like a UAC prompt). Sounds like a good idea - is there any way for me to add this?

(PS and FYI ? I have Windows Defender on my 8.1 because Avast 2015 uses up the entire capacity for hardware-assisted virtualization, which I intend to play with later. Similarly, on my 7, I still have Avast 2015 but I have turned off its ?Enable hardware-assisted virtualization? for the same reason. Finally, on my XP, I have Avast 2015 and have left ON its ?Enable hardware-assisted virtualization? because, on XP, there?s no interference with HAV. But probably not relevant to my question.)

A:Extra help to block ransomware (no disk encryption unless keyboard OK)

i have 3 t410 laptops one with no screen and the power button went bad on the keyboard that is currently on it. i had gotten it to boot up a time or 2 by touching the 2 end contacts-one on each side- together but now there is no response from that. my plan for this pc is to sit on a docking station connected to a 50" flat screen to use netflix and the kodi app. will be running mint on a ssd so basically i want to use it as a firestick with 8gb of ram. i have wireless key boards, ect. so my plan was to just solder a wire to each pin and just touch them together to boot up as this will stay on 24/7. eventually i will replace the keyboard when i find another deal on ebay for another t410 for parts. i have not been able to find anything designating which pins connect to what. any help will be much appreciated!

Hello to everyone

As i'm new to this forum, as welcome note i have problem to present.

Before few months i bought 2 USB extension cables for my mouse and keyboard.
They are about meter and half long, and in that time i did not have any problems with them, until last night.
In one moment i unplugged keyboard from USB extension cable and after that after i plugged it again, the keyboard did not work, not any kind of message or sound after you plug in something to usb port. So i tried plugging in mouse in same extension cable and mouse worked, but after switching keyboard to another ext.cable it did not work again.
Only way for keyboard to work is to plug it in directly to PC.
I tried uninstalling USB drivers so let windows install them automatically, but same nothing happen, only mouse is working ... :S its weird, don't know what to do as booth extension cables are obviously working. Tested with mouse. Keyboard is working as i said before i tested it plugging in directly. Never seen this kind of problem.

Help appreciated

A:Extension cable / keyboard problem !

When you unplugged the usb cable (key board), was the PC powered on? Sometimes doing so can cause such issues as you are experiencing. Generally a reboot will set things wright.

What does it look like in the device manager, are there any yellow triangles?

Have you tried using different usb ports with the extension cable?

Hello all,

I have been having a seriously frustrating time trying to fix icons displaying in my games folder way too small. Every icon is a custom x256 by x256 icon, and I have seen them all work properly at one point. However, for some reason these icons now appear in their 32x by 32x bit forms, as seen in the attached image.

I have tried everything, including rebuilding and refreshing the icon cache, editing the registry value to x4068 size, only refreshing or rebuilding then restarting, moving the icon files, moving the game shortcuts, so on. All of these shortcuts are offline .exe files, and these icons have taken me a long time to build.

I'm sick and tired of trying to solve it myself, so I've come here for help. The only thing that has worked so far was a Microsoft support file, which fixed the problem until I switched my account to my brothers so he could play, where his icons were broken and when I logged back in so were mine. I haven't been able to find the support file since. I'm very tired of trying to fix this computer, with some V9.com malware stuck in there and rooted so I cannot remove it, broken Windows Photo Viewer that won't even launch, general messes. Do you guys have any clue how I can fix my icons?

A:Some Extra Large Icons appear Extra Small

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
We might look into this malware issue first,
Post all scan results for review,
Repeat for all users,
Review Jacee?s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
Instant Savings App
Screen shot of the download button to use for Adwcleaner
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,
Select the drive to scan usually C,
If your really infected check the box to scan for Rootkits = this scan option will take several hours to complete,
Never use your machine while scans are running for best results,
This one is the longest up to 4 hours, the others are only about 45 minutes,

You will likely be better served in the security section for this issue,

i tried to rewire my backlit keyboard by splicing the cord and connecting a regular usb cable. the color coded wires were different. the keyboard had 1 yellow, 1 red, one green and one white, while the usb cable has 1 black, 1 red, 1 green and 1 white. i connected all of the colorcoded to its color and was left with a yellow from the keyboard, and 1 black from the usb cord. Can anyone tell me how to splice these cords together? I know it is possible, because I know someone who did it. I just cannot get ahold of them. thank you for any help!

A:was trying to rewire backlit keyboard to usb cable new puppy chewed up!

Hello and welcome to TSG!!

If you have the old USB end, and a meter, you can trace the wires to the connector pins. Alternatively, you can do some surgery on the old connector to trace the wire color to pin, but that doesn't help with the new cable. Try to find someone with a meter or some sort of continuity checker.

Hi All,

This is not the first time this has happened, where having opened the laptop to tablet mode, a cable appears to have come loose. This means that the laptop no longer recognises that the laptop is back to laptop mode, so it doesn't reactivate the keyboard. Lenovo last time fixed this saying it was a fault with the assembly, but it has happened again, this time out of the 12 month warranty, and 3 months since it last happened. I really expected better quality of manufacture and the repair seems to have been very poor. This is my work laptop and the only computer I got, and any time spent without it is crippling to my work. I am currently using an external keyboard, which means working on the move is very inconvenient. I have a YOGA 51014ISK Is there a way for me to ask Lenovo to fix their repair mistake? I seem unable to find a proper way to contact/complain regarding this. I am not happy that I have to pay for repairs again for the exact same issue so quickly after the last "fix".  Otherwise, is there a repair guide I can follow to fix this myself? I didn't see one, and I'll need to reconnect the keyboard wire inside. Thanks for your time.

Sorry to hear about the troubles.  The following link gives details on the basic diagnostics.
The code 2000-0411 means a possible failed hard drive.
I suggest reseating the hard drive.  Disconnecting the drive and reconnecting it. Here is a link from the service manual on removing hard drives.
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
Once reseated and try diagnostics again.  If it gives the same error you will need to replace the drive.

A week ago, my computer suddenly could not connect to the internet. I was using a cable directly connected to the cable modem.

Since then, I've tried:

1) Added a WiFi router connected to the cable modem. Tried using the WiFi card built in to the computer. It connects but reports "limited access", and there is no connection to the internet, and I can't access the router itself.

2) Bought a new Ethernet card, installed the drivers that came with it. I've tried it connected through the WiFi router's hard ports and directly to the modem. Hard resets (power cycling off 2 minutes) on the modem each time and still no connection.

3) In device manager, both Ethernet cards show as "working normally" with no errors. So does the WiFi card.

4) ipconfig shows only "tunneling" devices with media disconnected.

5) I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the on-baord Ethernet, the WiFi card, and the new Ethernet card.

After reading some other posts, I captured the output from ipconfig and several netsh commands. I've attached them to this post. The files starting with netsh are basically the command entered with underscores replacing the spaces from the commands used to generate them.

Recently I had to test my cable modem by directly plugging the output cable of the modem to a computer. The problem is that I have 3 computers: One desktop and two laptops. All three computers are running Windows 7, 64 bit and service pack 1. The three computer models are: (1) Dell Vostro, (2) Levovo Ideacentre and (3) Sony Vaio. All computers are less than a year old. When I cpnnect the cable modem RJ45 cable to the Vostro the browser works great. However, when I connect the same cable into either the Ideacentre or the Vaio the browser does not see the signal. Therefore a signal is coming out of the modem (as demonstrated by the Vostro) but I can't figure out why the other two computers don't see the signal? I checked the computer configurations in the command mode but that did not help much. Any ideas?

I have set at home a network.

i have a Linksys router N

2 linksys access points

and several wireless and wired connections

here is my issue:

my NEW access point is using a 15m ethernet cable connection from router, the message i get on my laptop is when i search wireless networks: netweork with no or limited connectivity !

when i change cables and use a shorter one (1.5m) the connection works pefectly !!!

is it a cable problem ? cable too long or cable damaged?

i dont believe it is a setting problem since with the same setting it is working and not working depending on the cable i use.

A:Access point - Wireless issues (cable or not cable?)

The cables are mis-wired. There should be NO difference between the operation of a short cable and cables up to 100 meters long.

Since last night, my LAN connection has been giving me the error "Network cable unplugged." I have tried swapping the cable with another, swapping the ports on the router, restarting the router, power cycling the router, turning off the router and my computer and then turning them back on, and nothing has worked.

My computer has two network connections: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and a Hamachi network, which the computer is using (but not getting Internet on, of course) - I assume because it isn't giving a network cable unplugged error. This is the network controller that comes on my Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P motherboard, and it has the latest driver from the manufacturer's site (7.6.820.2009). In the device manager, it says that the device is working properly. There is a green light under the ethernet cable on the router, but not where it attaches to the motherboard (I can't remember if there was one before or not, though).

The Realtek Diagnostics Tool says the following:
IP Address
Connection NAme: Local Area Network
Link Status: Disconnected

It has a tab for Cable diagnostics, which says the following (Pair/Length/Status):

1-2 0 Normal
3-6 115 Normal
4-5 0 Normal
7-8 191 Short

When I run diagnostics, Register, Mac Loopback, PHY Loopback, IRQ, and FIFO all pass.

Here is what ipconfig/all says:

Primary Dns Suffix . . . . :
Node type . . . . .: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled . . . . . : No

Have you tried a different network cable? Your diags here say you have a short on 7-8.

I have a cable modem attached to a network (router, cascaded to other routers - different vendors routers but it works / to attach 10 computers). The PCs use a lot of data/bandwith part of the day and works well, generally, but the cable modem sometimes has outages and its important we get network working again. We have no IT support. So thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

I also have a DSL line/router that is not attached to anything (except it provides wireless).

Question: Can I just swing the cable from the cable modem over to the DSL router and expect internet to work?

I tried it one day and it worked, but we had very limited usage.

I tried it another time when the cable modem/internet failed - and it didn't seem to work. The usage was much higher so I don't know if the amount of data or the required "handshake" would take longer. or what...can you advise. This is just vanilla internet connection. No VPN or such. The applications can be shut down and reopened. But we would rather not have to reboot the PCs.

Second question would be: if I have both DSL and Cable Modem sitting next to each other - can I attach both so they can both be used and provide back up.
