PC running very slow, locks up, crashes

Q: PC running very slow, locks up, crashes

Dell 8250
Intel 3.06 GHz
1 Gb RAM
Windows XP SP3
NVidia GeForce 7600 GT
I do have a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall disk

Over the last few weeks, my PC has been having fits running slow, locking up, 1 BSOD (KERNEL.STACK_INPAGE_ERROR), stuttering sound, windows getting locked, mouse pausing and freezing, etc. It frequently requires hard boots as it won't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This happens in safe mode as well.

The CPU usage is often stuck at 100%, even with no applications running. I can't see any pattern to it. It can run fine for a few hours, then suddenly get stutter and lock up.

The only thing has changed recently is that a week or two before this started happening, the CMOS battery was giving error messages on reboots, so I replaced it. I have not been able to see anything wrong in the BIOS settings. Device Manager gives no errors.

I haven't seen any signs of malware, but just in case, I have attached the normal logs. I run ZoneAlarm Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. Virus scans have been negative. I also ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, but it found nothing other than harmless cookies.

I have cleaned/vacuumed out the system (which I do regularly anyway). I removed and reseated all the cards and memory. I checked that all the fans were working.

I have run CleanUp! (also a normal thing on my routine maintenance). The disk is not fragmented. I removed what programs and autoruns I was sure about.

I ran Chkdsk and it fixed some file errors (possibly due to the crashes), but did not mention any physical errors. Western Digital utility also reports no problems with the HD.

I also ran Windows File Protection.

I'm about ready to give up, but this site has been so helpful in the past, I thought it worth a try to ask again for help. Thanks in advance!

Kevin

Preferred Solution: PC running very slow, locks up, crashes

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: PC running very slow, locks up, crashes

Bump.

I think I put this in the wrong forum since it's looking more and more like a hard drive failure. I get several BSODs a day now, and the PC sometimes takes several attempts to reboot.

My computer, a HP Pavilionzv6000 laptop with Win XP, runs slower that it used to. I don't know how many programs are running that don't need to be running. I may have a virus because every time the AVG program runs, it finds a virus. Sometimes it can't fix the problem so I put it in the vault. I have the Zone Alarm firewall set on High. Also, often the computer just locks up and ai have to disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery to reboot it when no keystroke functions.

Please help!

The CPU usage is 100% and the computer is extremely slow and subject to frequent crashes or lock-ups. Sometimes when switching between users, it will re-start and after re-booting, a message telling me that Windows has recovered from a serious shut down. Hi, I'm Richard. Suddenly, my computer has been running really slow, especially Google Chrome, with Shockwave/Flash always crashing. I've been using VIPRE antivirus for about a year and had done fine until now. I used Control Panel to get rid of alot of stuff, including Bonjour. I read through many forums looking for clues. I ran SuperAntispyware and MalwareBytes (which froze), and also downloaded Hitman Pro (haven't run yet). I tried GMER, and it warned of a rootkit, so here I am posting and asking for your advice. Sorry about the double post. First I tried to post using Google Chrome. When I clicked to submit the post, I got a blank page. I checked first to see if it had posted anyway, and got "page not found," so I figured there had been an error and the post had been lost. That's why I tried again using a different browser (Internet Explorer). I'm very sorry. Thanks for your understanding.

The trend micro housecall scan crashes my computer right after the scan before its sorted anything out! I'm stuck what to do! Hopefully some of you guys can help me? I'll post my hijackthis log.

This is where it started... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/224624/computer-running-slow-some-redirects-and-explorer-crashes/Anyway, my computer is still running really slow and I've tried using McAfee, Ad-Aware, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a me... Suddenly the standby mode stopped working on my z61t.It does not matter if I close the lid or choose the standby option from the shutdown menu. What happens is, the standby starts, saving things to disk. and as the moon icon is about the lit (it is on for a very short while then it turn black. Battery icon is lit, and power icon is lit. All others are black. All buttons are dead. I can not turn on the pc again from  the power button. To recover I have to take out battery and power. cable. Then when I put the battery and cable back, I am able to start the PC. It then starts from cold (cold boot). I wonder if there is some way to make more investigastion? Is there any tests or logs I can find?I first thought the battery was bad so I thought I try to recalibrate it. The recalibration went fine. But still I am not able to enter standby without the pc locking. When the pc is locked it is actually totally turned off. No disk activity nor fan. Kind regards,Michael BJÍRCK

Your log shows that you're using IObit Advanced SystemCare 4, so it's very possible that its use has damaged the Windows operating system and broken some of your programs.

If you've been using any other cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type programs, that increases the risk even more of that occurring.

These programs do nothing to improve speed and performance nor perform "miracle cures".

Hoping someone will be able to help me here. I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook that's been locking up and crashing anytime I open programs. I have tried various anti virus programs and even restore points but nothing seems to resolve this. Have had this problem for 2 years now. I do play Mafia Wars frequently, but can only play that in "safe mode" which seems to be the only mode I can use without it crashing.

I was referred to you guys from another user. Thanks.

A:Toshiba WinVista 32bit locks up; slow startup & slow process

Is your Toshiba running the same OS as shipped with it?

Have you thought about trying to update the drivers?

Toshiba = https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/pubLogin.jsp (No login needed for drivers, only the forums)

What is the model?

I would backup anything you would hate to lose just in case before doing anything.

I would also suggest running a hard drive diagnostic and a memory test.

This Seagate test should work on your hard drive.

I've got a problem with my PC locking up during heavy network activity. And I know this the cause because it only happens when I play multiplayer games or when I'm download via P2P. It started when I got my new wireless adapter(TP Link TL-WN723N) and when it does crash I can do anything except reset(keyboard doesn't respond).Sometimes it even shuts down the computer without any warning. I've tried updating the drivers but I'm using the latest ones.
Can anyone help me out?

About 3 months ago my computer just started randomly locking when I was running 3d games. I wasn't having any problem in the world running 2d games so I was thinking maybe the GPU or video card memory was overheating. So I pulled a fan and heatsink off an old 386 processor I had and fixed it to the GPU and still the same problem.

Since then I've tried using a TNT2 and swapped out or replaced all hardware except for the motherboard and processor. Even tried changing the power supply. All drivers are up to date. I've tried 3 different BIOS revisions. I've tried using at least 5 versions of the Nvidia detonator drivers (I keep them archived in case of problems like this.) It locks up if there's sound being used or sound completely off and if the sound card isn't even in the computer. I'm running DX8.1 and nothing changed, software or hardware, when the problem occurred.

Video card is not overclocked. AGP aperture set in BIOS to 64 meg. I've defragged the HDD recently. Happens with any 3d game no matter how low the settings for the game are set.

Common games being played: CounterStrike, Monkey Island 3, WC3, Ultima Online (3d Client) Q3

System Specs:

Athlon 1.4Ghz
768 meg RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 32meg / TNT2 32meg (TNT2 for testing if it was the vid card)
34.6 Maxtor HDD
Asus A7V133 (not using the onboard RAID at the moment)

Hello:

I've got a problem with my Win XP system. A few days ago after a program conflict and system crash I had to reinstall my DSL utility program/drivers/modem etc...

The installation went well except that something seems to be running now in the background. I can log onto the Web, communicate and run all programs, but there is a regular tone annunciating (sounds like when a USB device connects) a bonging sound which occurs regularly.

Because I thought that there was some sort of conflict I clicked on "Add Hardware Wizard" and got the following message.

"Cannot run two device installations.
You can install only one device at a time, another device installation is underway, when it is finished you can try the Wizard again."

This seems to be the problem....the system apparently is hung up trying to install a device and never can complete that task.

Is there some simple way to stop this process? and in turn turn off the constant tone.

Thank you

Fred Gendler

A:Add Hardware Wizard locks up running in Win XP

Boot to safe mode and see if issue is still present. If the other device is not USB, then it should eventually install.

Also look in device manager and see if there are any bangs (? or !)

Hi,

Would it be a RAM or CPU issue causing an application lockup? When I run two online applications, one of them locks up. One uses 348 meg of memory [java Platform SE Binary] and the other uses 419 meg of memory [java].

The pc has 4gb of ram and 3 GHz cpu. Please advise.

A:Applications running java locks up.

A question about missing information, which version of JAVA are you running? You can go to java.com: Java + You and check if you have the latest. Also, what are the applications? Maybe someone else had the same problem.

Hey y'all
I have a problem with my PC. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and leave it idle for a while and then come back to it the whole thing will be locked up. I can move the mouse around but as soon as I click something it will lock up and the time will be locked to the time when it had locked up. The whole thing basically locks up causing the green vista loading mouse circle to replace the pointer. The only way to shut it off is to hold down the power button for about 5seconds. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I'm boggled by this.

Specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)
4Gb Ram

Try running GMER in safe mode. If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning.

Hi,

Recently IE8 keeps freezing up on my computer. When I go to processes in the task manager, I have multiple instances of "iexplore.exe" running. Most of the instances appear to be trying to connect to "a96-6-188-20.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com". The specific IP Address is: 96.6.188.20.

Is this a virus, malware, etc.? I tried running malwarebytes and that came up empty.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi All,
I setup the screensaver to run after 3 mins of idle.
On Power Management, Display will dim after 10mins, off the display after 15 mins and sleep to never.
What happen is, after 3mins the screensaver did not run but it locks the screen instead.
Can anyone explain or give an idea why it is happening?
Thanks,
Chouy

I have miserably slow performance and notice that the cursor flashes upon typing (as if some kind of keystroke capturing is going on). Spybot Search and Destroy seems to be corrupt and malwarebytes hangs (even the clock hangs). I have followed the instructions in the Prep Guide and run ccleaner. I can't run the cd emulation disabler because this is a corp issued laptop, and I don't have the admin password. Here is the DDS Log. I have saved and zipped the attach.txt in case you request it. I notice that it shows Spyware Doc + AV which I thought had become corrupt as well. McAfee VirusScan is installed by my company. hi,,,, am i lead to believe that you now think this is not a security issue hence you posted here, (if you do think its a security issue you need to post in the correct forum.) take a look in event viewer for more info related to the crashes,, also post back any info or error codes, also take a look in task manager to see if there are any processes that are using up all the CPU, post those back too, also look in device manager for any yellow triangles and red X's and lastly look in reliability monitor for info,,, click on any red X's in there and post back the info. hopefully its just a dodgy driver. to find all these just type in to search box in start menu.
good luck.

Hi all,

As for my problem, title speaks for itself. Has anyone encounter this from the antivirus 2009 family? If so, how/did you get around it? Id like to get the computer in question fixed, as that nasty side effect filters internet search (like this site, for example). Although, that last symptom there is circumventable by using one of the many proxy sites around.

On that system, my progress is:

Managed to install malwarebytes anti-malware, although this was originally hampered by the problem im asking about!

Program when run locks up at 2200k mem usage. (spybot does the same thing)

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). Plugging in the battery makes it work again. For the sake of prolonging my battery life I ususally run without it when safely docked at home.Anyone else experiencing this? I assume it's a bug?

A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

Hello,

For some reason my IE 10 on Windows 8 has become almost unusable.

It crashes & is really slow.

I did scans for viruses & stuff.None found.

So, I am using Chrome to post this & it works good.

I even restored to factory default (Full Install) & that didn't help.

Hence the change to using Chrome.

Just thought I would share this.
