XP wont load/Computer wont start

Q: XP wont load/Computer wont start

Nothing will load on my Compaq Presario 700 notebook. It wont even turn on in safe mode.
When I go to turn it on it sounds like the hard drive attempts to spin. I don't hear the fans, but all the lights come on. The battery is fairly new and everything is plugged in properly.
All this began when I was running Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and it locked up forcing me to shut down.
Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have run Malwarebytes anti-malware and it has identified 0 threats. I have adware antivirus but it won't run. Any help would be appreciated thank you!

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

A:Computer Wont Load up frozen start up screen RAM problem

Hi sorry you seem to have a poor impression of techs lets hope we can help you and possibly change that, 2 things come to mind, the slot is bad ie damaged in some way or the ram is,when you tested the ram in the slot did you try only 1 stick, try 1 of the others in it if it works ok then it is the ram that is the problem,if not then it is the slot, you can run with 1 less stick of ram, also check that the ram all matches as this would throw up a similar problem

When I start up my pc, I get a screen that says, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change may have caused this, ….etc."
Then I am offered with a bunch of options to either:

1) Start in Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt
4) Start Windows Normally
5) Last Known Good Configuration

None of them work, the safe mode ones, show a bunch of lines of code as per normal when starting up safe mode, then it freezes and stops and eventually goes back to the screen mentioned above. Same for 4 and 5, windows blue loading bar screen comes up, then the screen turns black and nothing. After a few mins my computer restarts again and goes back to the screen mentioned above.

Prior to my computer not being able to restart/load windows. I had some pop up vundu trojans i was trying to remove. Did some research after about 5 hours finally removed it. A couple days after i started receiving "generic host process error" Something to do with explorer.exe program. So i ctrl + alt + del and explorer.exe was taking up 100 cpu usage. At this point i tried to minimize task manager and my computer froze up. I waited about an hour came back and still nothing so i manually turned off my computer and turned back on. And now it will not restart. I have no idea where my windows xp disks are or even if i have them. I found what appears to be the solution to my explorer.exe pr... Read more

Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. Now with internet issue, it works in safe mode with connection, but not in my normal screen. WHY IS THIS DOING THIS?

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

my computer wont boot and still it wont display.
i already changed a video card and stil it wont.
it have no beep at all and it will not display.

what should i do?

A:guys my computer wont start and wont have a display

does it beep any. if not this will indicate more major problems. (unless you dont have beep speaker installed) a mother board is programed with a set of beep to play if there is a problem like such as three beeps if the ram is not working, 1 long beep if the vid card is not working etc etc. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR BEEPs WILL BE. if you are not getting these then you need to find out why. see if you have a speaker inside your case. if you do and all of your fans spin but still no action from you pc then you may have a larger problem such as mother board or processor.

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

Tried this last week with a 333fsb pc chips board. Didnt work figured the board was broke, bought a new one for my friend cuz i felt so bad we couldnt get his computer to boot. Its the biostar m7ncd (not pro) it has up to a 400fsb (www.biostar.com.tw) Anyway here is what we are using.

1gb stick of 333 2700 DDR ram (house brand) also tried swapping it with my old stick of 512 ddr ram that I got at best buy still didnt work.

geforce ti 4800se (albatron)
samsung 100gb hard drive
mitsumi 54x cd burner
biostar m7ncd
athlon xp 2700+ with volcano 8 heatsink/fan

tested all of those parts minus the processor in my motherboard and they all worked fine.

loaded windows xp professional sp1 on his hard drive in MY computer hoping it would boot on his... no such luck. It says "safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good config, start windows normally" after any of those are selected it takes a second then it goes back to the geforce card bios screen (restarts)

I set the FSB to 166 and the bios shows it now as a 2700+ and the ram it says is ddr 333 which it is, however it only displays it as one gig of ram if I disable quick boot, then it either says its 2gigs or half a gig. Every once in a blue moon on a start I get a cmos checksum error however the ram works in my m7vig biostar but it runs as 266 ddr ram cuz of the 266fsb max on that board.

anyways I even tried formatting the drive then trying to load windows on it on his computer and as soo... Read more

Please try using this to repair the broken registry entry that may be causing this.Download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HERE if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

A:Disc Wont Load On Start Up

For booting the Windows CD, it may be that you need to change bios settings in order to get a boot. Shut your system down and power on, during POST (Power On Self Test - this is the bit before the Windows splash screen), press F2 lots, and the setup menu should load. If not, try the Delete key, then some other combination of mashing the function keys to get the right one.

How your Bios is laid out, depends on your motherboard, but the aim is to enable CD Boot, (usually simbolised with a tick against it), and prioritise it above Hard Drive. This will be on the main screen, or in a seperate boot menu, the commands for editing selections appear along the bottom.
I was looking around for something similar to your error and found

After that everything runs fine until we log off then we go thru the same thing again.

My os is windows xp pro SP3 updated, as a matter it all began after the updated (30 updates from microsoft).
i use norton corporate edition 10, microsoft antispyware, spysweeper daily (and the PC is really clean). if i need to give u anymore info please let me know what info and maybe how to find that info as well please.
Other thing I open regedit and in:

At the value is shell=explorer.exe.

Try doing this, Open windows explorer > click tools > Folder options > view tab > uncheck the box next to launch folder windows in a seperate process and then restart. Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

Our family computer is randomly having trouble connecting to the internet when loading some web pages or web pages wont load. I occasionally have the same problem with my laptop but never at the same time. Which leads me to believe it is not likely my router. Would that be correct? My wife plays alot of games from Yahoo Games. Could that be a source of some of the problems?

I have some of the tools I believe will be needed to clean the system loaded to my desktop ready to go. I need some direction to be sure I don't go out of order and cause a bigger problem.

I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

Last week windows xp had a popup error stating that I had "worm.win32.netsky" and "trogan spm/lx". I used norton tools to remove the "worm.win32.netsky". After that, I used the norton emergency disk to boot in safemode to do a full system scan. The scan found nothing. Since then windows xp will not start up. I get the load screen to select the user. Once I select any user it says "loading user settings" and then right after "saving user settings" and stays at the user select screen. What should I do?

Reset IE to its defaults. To do this perform the following:

Go to Control Panel

I have a windows 7 notebook that won't load into windows or load safe mode successfully its ends with a black screen and hangs forever. System restore wont even fix it. What command can I use to troubleshoot this other than reinstalling windows. Thanks

A:windows 7 wont start up or load safe mode successfully

If you have an install disk and can access Setup (possibly tapping F2 as you switch on) to change the Boot order to CD/DVD before the HDD, then insert the disk - Save and Exit, it will then reboot up with it and you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

Select the Repair option and then Startup Repair in the Recovery Environment.

It will give you the option to select a restore point which you can opt for or pass on that and let it complete the Startup Repair.

If it reports that it was unable to repair, then you could give the restore point a try.

I had this problem just yesterday and found the solution (i dont know if its the same cause for the problem in all reports but its the same symptoms as mine for sure, i have XP tou)

here is a closed thread about it that didnt reach a solution, i hope mine works for most ppl that had this problem (i hated it lol)

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/615994-web-browser-does-not-work-2.html

Anyway the thing is i downloaded FileAssassin in someone else's laptop and tried to kill the only process in my task bar that I didnt recognize (after looking for it it, before erasing it, it was one of nod32's dll) earler in the week my nod32 installation froze mid way tru, I didnt mind it but when i noticed earlier today that i had ekrn in my taskbar i tried uninstalling it but i couldnt (before i thought it didnt install so i didnt bother again with nod because i was busy), thats when i downloaded FileAssassin.

FileAssassin couldnt kill it by normal means so instead i set it with FA to erase it upon reboot/reset, all the esset files that i couldnt delete normally, i think it amounted to 4dlls in my C Esset folder and my C Windows Prefetch folder

they all had EKRN in the file name so they were easy to spot using windows's search function.

After that all my browser functions were restored. ekrn is nod's firewall afaik, but it still surprises me that it started running even tou my install froze at midpoint.

Help,

having to use the works computer to post this. My home pc is failing to startup.

Before it had gotten this bad, I had experienced crashes and reboots whilst it was working. They became more frequent and now the computer wont start at all. The power comes on, the fans all whirr, but the computer doesnt even get to the point where it displays the introductory bios screen.

Any advice?

Computer is a little old now. Intel 2600k inside.

Hi there, am staying @ my parent's and looking after their house whilst theyre abroad. Yesterday I decided to have a little play on my dads computer which runs on windows xp, I installed the sims duluxe edition and the sims living it up and played on them for about 10mins. Everything was fine, shut down the computer etc. Today I went to turn it on and windows will not even load. The start-up screens come up and it says there was a power-failure could not start properly perhaps due to software/hardware changes. However it wont even start in safe mode, none of the options work the computer just reboots itself and goes back to the same screen. I think there was a power cut last night but am pretty sure its something to do with the game I installed. Please help, my dads going to kill me is I cant sort it out!

Lets start from the beginning..this is the kids pc and it wouldn'r boot W2K stating something was missing (I can't remember what this was as I started trying to get this machine going over a month ago)...long story..erased the HD and was going to reload W2K. Would boot up far enough to say it couldnt read drive A. Went into BIOS and changed it to boot to CD only....starts to load and shuts down - then it won't power off.----> Sometimes it will power off to reboot and sometimes not. Once I actually got it to start booting windows to have it stop 1/3 of the way in. So I thought HD...they had a crappy 6.8 gb in there anyway. Replaced HD today added memory and I am still having the same problems. I am thinking power supply, motherboard or processor. Where do I start without feeding excessive money into this project and pulling all my hair out?

my sisters computer is infested with viruses so i downloaded malwarebytes and mse and updated them, i changed her computer setting to safe mode and rebooted and was planning on trying to rid some of the viruses. now the computer lists all the drivers it's loading and freezes after it gets to drivers\CLASSPNP.sys
it sat there for about 10 minutes so i restarted it and it gave me the option to start windows normally, or in safe mode. if i choose the latter, i get the same problem as above. if i choose to start it normally, it lists all the drivers like before, gets to classpnp.sys, then goes to a black screen saying the computer is loading in safe mode with minmal services. then it goes to a black screen and just sits there. All i did really was change from normal startup to safe mode now i cant load windows or something. Anyone have an idea?

Have you tried booting into Last Known Good Configuration ?

-1. Turn on your computer

-2. Keep pressing the F8 key while it boots up to get the Boot Menu (Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, etc will be listed in it)

-3. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

See if that helps resolve your problem...

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Hello,

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks,
adub2b23

I got a new p4 3 gig with hyperthreading pc. For a while it was working like a charm, on overdrive. But only after a week of use, I started to have problems. While playing very visually demanding games (Battlefield 1942, Medal Of Honor) I would keep gettin those dreaded blue screen of death thingies. I would get one of 3 errors. One said, "IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_TO_OR_LESS_THAN" another said, "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" although im not quite sure about the NONPAGED part, i know it said non something. And the other one I think I only got once and cant remember exactly what it was, it had something to do with IRQ.

Now on all of them it said it was shutting down my pc to avoid hardware damage. Which it did, I had about 3 seconds to read the screen before my pc shut down. After a while, It got so bad that I would get an error while just browsing the internet with explorer. I tried taking out my vid card and using the on-board video, didnt work. I dont remember if xp stopped starting or not, but I decided I should format my hd to fix the problem. I only have the xp upgrade cd so I had to install win98 first. Win 98 installed fine, except that on the first startup after installation my pc resarted itself and I got the "failed startup, choose an option" thing, I chose normal start up and it worked fine. So then I tried to install xp again. I got to the part where it restarts to install xp from the files copied from cd. During that installtion phase, It said... Read more

Hey Everyone.

My dads computer has just stopped working for some reason. I can normally figure out why it doesnt work, but this time I cant..

So this is what i've done.

I've started up my dads computer, it goes to the black screen with "Safe mode" "Safe mode with networking" etc etc. I clicked the bottom one (Load micrsoft xp normally blah blah blah)

It gets to the start up screen, then it just restarts itself. I thought, huh. Lets try Last Known Config, but it restarts itself like I stated earlier. I then tried booting it in safe mode, and safe mode command prompt. It still doesnt work, but what I did notice, a blue screen with some writing pops up just before it restarts, but you can read it because it restarts after like a less than a second.
My dads computer is a Windows XP pro by the way.
Thanks everyone who helps me.

oh, btw. I can take a video of what happens if you guys want, if you cant figure it out. Thanks again.
Edit: sorry if this has been asked before.

I use an HP a720n and lately I've been having some problems.

A few days ago it started to make the noise that it makes when shutting down (maybe the hard drive stops spinning). It would do that several times and basicly freeze up. The mouse will still move but programs can't be opened.
Now it won't even boot up. An error message appears that says file windows/system32/config/system can't be loaded.

I run 2 250 gig Western Digital Hardrives and do a lot of video editing, but the external drives have there own power supply. A few months ago I installed an extra 512 stick of Kingston Ram, and it ran fine for months before it started recently acting up.

I ran an antivirus program on it and came up with nothing.

Could my hardrive have crapped out ?
PSU maybe?

All help is appreciated. Thanks.
