I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently finished cleaning my laptop of malware with help of someone in the Malware/etc forum, and shortly afterwards while trying to use Function + left and right arrow keys to change the volume of my laptop, I noticed that the volume only goes up or down by 2 at a time when the button combination is used, rather than beforehand when it used to go up or down by 10 at a time.

How can I fix this problem?

(If I'm in the wrong forum, please direct me to one where I might ask this question)

A:Volume function not working properly

I would try running the chkdsk /r command from the command prompt.

Hi, I have a Lenovo P40 Yoga running on Windows 10. I'm having issues with the fn volume keys not working. All the other fn keys work just fine, but the volume keys do not work. I have noticed that restarting my computer temporarily fixes the issue, but once I hit the "mute" key everything stops working again. If I do not use my "mute" key, the other two increase and decrease volume keys work perfectly fine. Muting my laptop using the volume slider in the Windows toolbar has the same effect.  Thank you

Hello, I have problems with volume function keys on used X250 I recently bought. The thing is that all function keys work just fine all the time, red backlight works on function keys including the mute key. After restart, I am able to control the volume (F1, F2, F3) until I open any random app that uses speakers (Spotify, Netflix or Youtube in Firefox, VLC player etc.). After that, volume keys stop working and I can control volume only on main panel.I searched through this forum and all similar problems were solved by updating drivers. I already updated BIOS, Audio and Keypad drivers, I installed HotKey Features Integration software, System Interface Foundation software, I also tried KeyTweak, nothing seems to be working for me. Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks in advance!

I have an Acer Aspire 1810TZ running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. There are function key combos to adjust the screen brightness (Fn-right and left arrow). This function seems to stop working after I hibernate and un-hibernate the computer. Other function key combos, such as volume adjustment, still work fine. And adjusting the screen brightness via the power control panel still works. Restarting Windows restores the brightness adjustment key function until I hibernate and un-hibernate again.

An annoying glitch in an otherwise great machine.

Try toggeling auto-adjust and trying again. Might not solve the hibernate thing, but may prevent a full reboot.

Hi everyone,I had the hard drive replaced recently in my G580 (Windows7) and everything is perfect except this one thing. I use the Volume: FN/down and FN/up a lot. It's very awkward that I can't see the volume setting any more. I know I can use the volume control in the tray but that is too slow to use in a live muic situation.btw the Fn/brightness also works but doesn't show the settings. Is this a setting that has gone awry that I can easily change?I've seen posts about the FN not working at all but nothing about it owrking but just not being visible. Thanks for any help.

Suddenly the function key coupled with arrow keys (volume shortcut) stopped working. This happened after some other screwy things began happening: suddenly a window would switch to desktop without me accidentally doing anything - and in gmail suddenly the compose window would disappear and a new compose window would show up. The switch in windows happens in Word primarily.

Help...

Thanks, as always.

Here's the deal - I have a quick shortcut to my C drive on the desktop, so that I can just double-click it and go straight to browsing my files. However, today, the search function decided to make itself the primary function. When I double-click it now, it opens a search window instead of the C: drive.

Can someone tell me how to make it so double-clicking it will, by default, use the "open" function instead of "search?" Thanks in advance!

hello. i've had a couple of hard drive related issues with my pc in the last 6 months or so which i thought may had been resolved, but i'm now thinking that the actual issue is still yet to be discovered and resolved.

initially, i was getting a disk read error when trying to reinstall windows. i thought i had solved the issue by replacing the hard drive, but then a couple of months later i was having more problems which i initially thought was software related, but turned out to be a faulty cable. see this thread for more details...

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/977869-fatal-error-when-trying-install.html

since i have resolved that issue, an issue i was having before it was resolved, which involved the drag & drop function not working, is still occurring. i thought this was very strange as i presumed that once i did a fresh windows install, the issue would have disappeared, but this is not the case. this is making me think that the original issue may not have been with a faulty cable, but a more deep rooted issue.

another issue, which has appeared only recently, is that the software for my sound card (creative e-mu 1616) has seemed to have completely disappeared from the hard drive even though i haven't deleted it. i have no idea how that has happened and i can't really get my head around it!

any help would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, newbie here, I'm experiencing a weird problem with Win 7..for the last 2 days I am unable to search within folders. When I use the search box in the top right hand corner to search, windows returns search results saying "no items found". This was working perfectly fine just a few days ago, where the files I searched for would be found and highlighted. Also, when I go to the "my documents" folder (or any folder for that matter), and open subfolders, it displays the folders as empty even though the preview (when I hover the mouse over the folder) says there are files inside, and I know for a fact there are files there! Sometimes only a few files are displayed, other times the folder appears empty.

I havent changed any settings or options on my computer. This is a really annoying problem, and the standard response from Dell is "reinstall the OS". I have a lot of documents and music and even though they have been backed up, it is just a pain to go through the whole process again. Any ideas what could be happening and how to fix this before I reinstall the whole thing?

Thanks!

A:Weird problem - cannot find files, search function not working

Open and elevated command prompt (right click command prompt and run as admin) and type SFC /SCANNOW. See if it finds any problems. BTW, SFC is System File Checker.

I would also test the hard drive to make sure it working properly. You can use HD Tune, Seatools, or the hard drive diagnostics tool made by your hard drive manufacturer.

Try running SFC.  From the Search charm type CMD, then right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator.  From the command prompt type sfc /scannow.  If that doesn't fix it, download, install, and get Malwarebytes up to date, then do a scan with it.

Good luck.

I am pretty well versed with upgrades from Windows and HP. I purchased and registered this new HP Envy Notebook HP - m7-n109dx a month ago.  After either Windows or HP updates the Function keys for Dim, Brightness and Volume had stopped working.  After this began I rolled back and resinstalled video and keyboard drivers one at a time and rebooted the system.  Nothing is working. We need somone to give us a patch to download to fix this universal problem. I scoured this forum and many others but because this computer is a 2016 computer there are not many expert suggestions from HP or power users to resolve this problem. On the other hand, I see complaints in many forums about the problem, hence the description as being a universal problems. Is it a Windows Updates for W10 that is the culprit?  Is the newest BIOS update from HP that is the problem?  I do know my machine worked great for two weeks until updates from HP and Windows began pouring in. Could we please  have an expert reslove this without speculation?  I have done all that any expert would do to resove the problem. No, I am not going to reset the system either. Thank you in advance to whomever the hero will be with the right answer.

I've had this problem for years now both on an older HP laptop running XP with SP2 and now on an Acer 4670 laptop running XP & SP2 as well and it's now drivimg me mad. You can adjust the volume, of say, Media Player by holding down the function key (Fn) and pressing the up and down arrows (normally bottom right of keyboard) which will then display a green display at the bottom of the screen. Same thing happens on the Acer when you switch on either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi using the hardwired buttons on the front you get the green message saying either "Disabled" or "Enabled". But this display deactivates and reactivates itself at random (currently it's off) If I go into Sounds and Audio Devices and play around with the controls it sometimes comes back on. It's now beginning to really P*** me off. Anybody got any ideas? Thank-you, thank-you and thank-you once more. . . .

Just recently, my Windows 8.1 desktop seems to have developed two issues. Not completely sure they are related, but upon doing some research on the internet, it seems that they may be.

First issue I noticed is that I cannot open any of my pictures using the photo app. Normally I open images with Windows Photo Viewer, which still works, but occasionally, I open them using the "open with" function with the photo app (Photo) for quck editing, like cropping, etc. Today, when I tried to open anything in the app, the app comes up, thinks for a second, then goes black and minimizes itself to the tray at the bottom of the screen. If I click on that, it simply goes through the same process. No error messages, just no image and it won't stay up on the screen. So in googling this problem, some mention the Windows Search indexing may not be picking up the photos. I go to the "start" screen as I normally do and simply start typing services.msc to bring up that services window, but nothing happens, and instead of getting a list of search choices as normal, the screen just freezes for a minute. I then clicked on the little magnifying icon to bring up the search box, and again, nothing happens and the screen freezes for a minute.

So I manually went to Services and checked to make sure that the Search service is on, and it is, it is set to "automatic (delayed start)" I tried switching it to just the automatic start, but that did not make any difference. ... Read more

Hi...I have an Acer AO255 netbook...it functions well aside from a problem with some numbers (4,6,8,0) and some letters (p and a capital V) that do not work...also number 6 is constantly in a connected state (not physically depressed but typing away in any space available)...it`s not the leyboard itself that needs changing but something inside that I figure is somehow stuck and causing a constant connection of the number 6...the other letters and numbers that are not working are at times intermittently working but in the main not !

It is not the keyboard itself that is malfuntioning as the number 6 is merrily typing away even when the keyboard is disconnected...anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing this please ?

The Acer itself works fine...it`s just this key/number thing...I don`t use it now as I have other laptops to use but when I have used it,it`s easy enough to browse etc...but you can imagine the difficulty when needing to type ! ...I have a feeling a connection is stuck but don`t know what or where to look to check.

Thanks,

I'd bet the keyboard itself is defective.

My backlight function keys don't always work. More often than not, they don't work, they simply do nothing. Moreover, if I try to manually change a setting in the power options, it doesn't change anything. I contacted HP via the online chat support, but they were less than helpful. The chat support agent I talked to clearly didn't know what they were doing. They suggested I reinstall all the ACPI drivers, update BIOS and update my video card driver....My ACPI drivers are all reinstalled recently (and really only one of them should matter), the BIOS was updated a week ago and my video card drivers are up to date according to device manager. The worst part of my experience is yet to come. The technician doubted my information and didn't want to trust that I knew what I was talking about, because they wanted me to open up things like msinfo32 and check my BIOS was up-to-date. Is it too much that I know something (I'm currently in a CS major so I know what I'm doing). They finally suggested I reformat the laptop (I have an HP Envy 17). I don't want to reformat and I don't know what else exactly to do. This isn't the first time chat support has been unsatisfactory but I know the keys sometimes work, suggesting the keys aren't broken and the software isn't completely messed up either. I am sure I don't need to reformat so here I am asking for some help. Thanks.

A:Dim function keys not working

The online chat seems doing right by checking video driver, ACPI and BIOS.If one of those components was not right, the brightness control (fn+f7/f8) will not function properly. Since they dont know what you or other software have done, the easy way is to recommend you to do HP system recovery.HP system Recovery with factory installed feature will determine either you have software or hardware issue easily. If the recovery dont help then 100% you have hardware issue. My suggestion is to follow what HP support steps.

Hi,

Unfortunately today I have encountered a very strange problem. Everything works fine on my laptop except the Delete function. When I try to delete a file/folder I am prompted with the usual message asking whether I am sure that I want to delete and as soon as I press the ok nothing happens. I have tried to delete files/folder in various places and the same problem exists. I have tried to do this on an external pen drive/hard drive as well and the same problem exists. I would appreciate your help in this regard.

The search function in windows xp appears to be disabled. Clicking on the Search button in any window has no effect.

This might or might not be related to a second problem I'm experiencing. System Restore has been mysteriously turned off and I cannot turn it back on. Checking off the 'Turn off System Restore' checkbox and clicking on 'Apply' results in the following message: "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable one or more drives. Please restart your maching and try again." Restarting, of course, has no effect. Btw, the 'Status' section of the System Restore window indicates the following: "(C) Turned off. Not sure what that means.

I have run numerous spyware programs as well as AVG virus programs but the problem still persists.
