Preferred Solution: HI! Newbie here :p

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all

I'm not very good with computers, I can type, print use the internet.

But I recently have bought a new pc and I want to transfer some of the files from my old computer hard drive to my new computer

My old computer broke, something to do with the fan according to the man at the shop, but I was wondering if there is something that can allow me to link the hard drive on my old pc so I can access all the files that were saved on it?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks for your time and patience!

Heya, I'm a newcomer to this forum and wondered if anyone could help me with a slight problem that I am having with my internet at the moment

At the moment our house has 2 computers, my Dad's downstairs and mine in my room. About 2 or 3 months ago my Dad managed to connect my computer to the internet without using a router and just using wireless cards seeing as both of the computers run on XP, and this means that I can get online only when his computer is on, but thats cool with me.

The thing is that my internet speeds are really erratic. For example about 3 hours ago I was downloading at just over 1.5MB, but now I have plummeted to around 16kps. When I dowload things, my connection sometimes jumps from as low as about 3kps ( this is the lowest that I have seen it go) to almost 7 MB ( the highest that I have seen it go)
When his computer gets turned on, it tells us that we are connected at 7.6Mb but the internet has been going at less than 1 Mb.

My Dad has offered that I cant get any higher than 54Mps which is the speed of the cards, and that our Norton Anti Viurs Protection will cut the speeds a lot because its a really good firewall, ( my Dads opinion, I dont really know much about that sort of thing)
The reason he gave for not using a router was that it would mess with his settings on his computer and he also manages a website for his work which he says would get screwed up.

Seeing as I am new to stuff about the internet I dont know what to make of his sugg... Read more

Hi,

As long as you back up your system in the (quite unlikely) event of a failure you should have no issues install Windows 7. As to what to download have a look at this thread - http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-c...ndows-7-a.html - to see if it helps your decision.

Hope this helps

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so. Your full of worms and trojan virus's!!

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be but make sure)

I am not sure exactly what you are describing here. Booting into Safe Mode will disable any graphics drivers and make the screen harder to read, but should be functional.

Hello all,

I've got my first new PC in years and it came with Vista Home Premium which of course has WMC built in to it.

Tonight I managed to run a S-Video cable from my box to the TV, and created a "new monitor" for the TV. I have it setup where they are configured independently of each other (dual view). I can move items back and forth if I desire but I have kept my 23inch LCD as my primary monitor of course.

My question comes in relation to Media Center. When I open it, it opens on my TV, which is fine I guess. But when that happens I then cannot move my mouse back to my LCD.

Ideally I would like to start some music, or maybe a DVD then get back to working on my PC. Is this possible?

Thanks
David

Help Needed!

I had used a couple of anti Virus programs (Ad Ware, AVG & Spysweeper) after XP started to run slowly. They had detected that I have Trojans (winlogonhook, zero, Nanaco-Gen & Nubile-Gen) including malware and adware and quarantined them (SpySweeper).

I have tried various diffrent things such as booting in safe mode, launching SpySeeper via Task Manager and turning off restore points. I have even used a program called Avast! to scan drives before boot. When ever this scan takes place, I am able to boot normally but systems still runs extremely slow so, I am not confident these viruses are gone.

This means I have to go back into Safe mode and start the process again...I've been doing this for 3 days...I now can not even get to the log on screen when booting normally. I rdead about Hijack this and uploading my log so here you go...

Please download FixWareout from one of these mirrors:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Note: You must have an active Internet connection when running this fix, in order to download the Brute Force Uninstaller (BFU).

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Hi

I have have so many problems over the last few months, reformat and then a new c drive that i'm thinking of changing browsers.

I went From Windows Me to Windows 98 because of security issues and other things.

From what i read we will be patching up for ever if it is left up to MS.

I'm told that Mozilla and Opera are very good with security.

Can you tell me what is involved in installing one of those browsers and can i do so over IE 6, i really don't know much about those kind of things.

I would appreciate opinions on which is the best browser.

Am i correct in saying that i will still need Windows for updates, how do i go about chopping and changing if i install a new browser?
I will be sooooooo confused.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

You can perform an upgrade. Simply boot into Vista x64 and run your DVD, when prompted, select 'Upgrade'.

Keep in mind that an upgrade is not as effective as a 'clean' install, but it should work.

Good luck.

Hey!

I've been looking up some motherboards, so I can make my own computer and all, but I'm having some trouble with it. Could you guys give me some advice? What would you say was the best motherboard I could get now? Is their some specific thing I need to look for, say, if I want to put a lot of games like Sims on their? Do only some motherboards have DVD hookup? Is their anything else I need to know? How much memory would you suggest I have attached to my board?

I have looked around and I've heard these are good (but then again I could be way wrong ). Can you give me your opinion or point me in the right direction of some really good ones?

Hello! I've just finished setting up a new desktop PC with windows 7.

Please move me/this, if it's in the wrong place.

I love it! Everything has gone well, I installed 7 pro and added my existing XP profession-related programs (no need for XP mode).
My last desktop did 7 years sterling service on XP (with only 1 clean install, 3 years in).

I am really pleased my old hardware works so well and can only breathe a huge sigh of relief that I didn't need to install XP to save my old apps.

Only two issues have come up.

1) the Nvidia (Asus Geforce 210 HDMI) control panel often fails to respond (swapping from monitor to TV), surprising it's windows 7 cert?

2) I attempted to install ubuntu (on a partition) and it failed, but lost 30gb of drive space. Windows can't find it, nor can a third party partition manager?

3) Dos anyone wish to comment on my cheap (free) add-ons?

Avast!
ccleaner.
inSSider (to help with wifi).
auslogics disk defrag.

I have gone with these after using AVG/Iobit/inSSider/windows!! on my Vista laptop.

That's it.

I love it, congrats to Microsoft for making it far more pleasurable than Vista, and just as a final goodbye.....(to XP), thanks for the service!

Welcome to TSF.

We will need a HijackThis log from you. But before you do that, get the newer version of Ad-aware at:

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Hi there. I just came accross this site in search for a solution to my problems on my computer. I use antivirus and spybot and try my best to keep all spyware away from my computer. But I can't get rid of this one no matter how many times I run spybot/antivirus.

What is happening is, whenever I double click Internet Explorer and open a new browser window, it goes to "about:blank" and shows a bunch of ads. I can then type in wherever I want to go in internet explorer and it works, so I have no problem with my connection, it is some type of adware that is setting my homepage. If I reset my homepage to say, www.google.ca, it will work only once sending me to that site, then reset itself to the weird site. Like I said, I ran spybot many times and antivirus manytimes.

Everytime I run spybot, it comes up with "DSO Exploit" so I did a search for it in google and came across "HijackThis" and these forums. I have ran this program to try and figure out my problem

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me fix this problem. I don't know what to do.

PS: Here is a listing of the HijackThis log:

Hi and Welcome
It may help you if you print out or copy this page for easy reference.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order as listed. Please Keep your browser closed when you are carrying out the fixes. Please do not run HJT on the desktop or a temp folder. Its best run in a dedicated folder of its own.

Make sure to run CWShreader, Adaware and Spybot (check for updates) for a preliminary cleanup first. Some files below may not be present after running the above programs

After that...
Download and run DELDOMAINS
then double click to open the DelDomains.inf .To execute the file: right-click and Select 'Install' from the Menu.

Then....
Run hjt in safe mode... HOW TO RUN SAFE MODE and have "Hijack This" fix all the following items in the list below by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting "fix checked".Please post a new log when finished.

With the EXE files that have been selected go into HijackThis/Config/Misc/Tools/ and open process manager. Select the EXE files (if they are there) and click Kill process before deleting.

Have your system set to show hidden files and folders.. HOW TO SHOW FILES. When done download Cleanup to clean out your tempory files.

Files highlighted in BLACK in the log will need to be removed from your hard drive.

Hi All,
Firstly I gotta intro myself Berne is the name good to be accepted at this forum.
Not sure if this is the right board, I am trying to get assistance with signing into my Windows Live Hotmail Account? Indeed I suspect a possible hijack of my password, trying to even reset my password just leads me into a cul de sac?

Windows Help ''contact us'' is a big issue, as they cannot reply to me as I, cannot sign into my account to view their replies?

This is very irregular, I appreciate any good advice this board may provide direct or referral perfect.

Hey there everybody, great site, looks like you help alot of people out. I'm hoping that someone might be able to do the same for me. This is my girlfriends computer, and I'm getting yelled at to try and make it work better. The computer is about 2 yrs old, Dell Dimension C521 running windows XP. We have RoadRunner service from Time Warner, and we also are running a wireless network since there was no way to wire it to the upstairs. I've noticed some significant slow down, and some other wierd things lately. Specifically, the network seems to stop working intermitantly. If I right click on the wireless network tray icon, and do a "repair", the network works fine and pages load quickly (for a short time anyways). My prefferred network (my wireless RoadRunner network- known as "f8ff") is set to be the top of the preffered networks. However, upon restarting sometimes the computer tries to hook me up through an unknown linksys network. I also just noticed that the unknown linksys network mysteriously reaperared even after I removed it from my preffered wireless networks (thinking that by eliminating it as an option it would no longer try and select that network). I have also thought that (begining recently) sometime I click on something, whether its a link, or a file or picture to open, and I'll be waiting for it to open, and then I'll have to click it again to get it to open (whereas these items usually opened with one click). I have ... Read more

Hi guys,
Yesterday I was struck by a fairly nasty piece of Malware, which led to the reformatting of my hard drive (I'm using Win XP). I reinstalled Windows, and I'm back to the very basics. I have no sound, and no option to connect to wireless.

Right now I'm downloading the Windows Update, but I'm wondering in the mean time if anyone could tell me what to do next. I'm pretty computer-illiterate, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

What is drive F? another drive or a partition on the same drive?

You did not delete the partitions and start over when you installed . . that is the easiest way out of the mess.

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

Hi, welcome to SevenForums.

A good place to find general information is Wikipedia, and it shouldn't take too long for you to load up, as it is mostly just text on this page.

A virtual private network, is as good as any description for it. In many ways it is the same as a closed wired ethernet network - like a company's intranet. In the instance of an intranet, a VPN would be one method of extending that intranet - for example if the company is spread across two geographically different sites, they could set up a site-to-site VPN so that employees at both sites have access to the internal network.

It can also be used for roaming remote network access, much like if you were to log in to your company's intranet from home.

For what application are you interested in VPNs?

I would use the support forum either here, I just joined so can't really give you a thumbs up or down, or the support forum for your OS or the mfrs support forum. I have found that pretty much everyone is willing to help if they have an answer anywhere I have asked. also be clear about your question, especially in your heading as that is what people search through, I know I will look at a more specific titles full ?? before a random one especially when I'm looking for a specific question or answer. always give the specs relative to the info you need, I.e. don't ask why your printer isn't working wirelessly without telling your pc's model, serial number, your OS and whether it's 32,or 64 bits, and the type of printer you are using,. also include info about any troubleshooting, if that's the case, you have already tried,. with all this info already in front of them you are more likely to get a complete and helpful and TIMELY answer as the respondent doesn't have to message you for the info and wait for you to get back to them in which they might lose interest ofr get busy on someone else's ???. hope this was helpful, if you have any other ?? feel free I'm not that computer savvy, that's why I'm here but I do ok. have a nice day!

Hello,

I'm a first time poster and come to you with a problem.

I have an older ABIT KG7-RAID motherboard with 2 drives set up as RAID-0. It is my old "Gamer" that has been now been regulated for my website and just general computing. Window XP Professional is the OS.

I found my external hard drive, on the floor, one evening and plugged it into the above computers USB port to see if it was still working. It began clicking like the old zip drives and all of a sudden my computer went to the blue screen of death (BSOD). The computer would continue to the BSOD each and every time I would restart it. It will not boot in Safe Mode either as it hangs up at AMDAGP.sys.

In an attempt to get it to boot, I removed all the cards except the video card. It still won't boot in Safe Mode, but now it will boot normally to windows. However it no longer recognizes my CD-Rom and won't recognize any USB items plugged in. I had to use a PS2 mouse and keyboard to have any input. Plugging in anything into the motherboard's USB ports causes a BSOD. When I plugged in a separate PCI USB board in, and plug a USB device into it, I get a BSOD. Had to remove this board to keep the computer running. When I plugged in my sound card the computer will boot but will at some point in time go to the BSOD. Have removed it to keep the machine running.

My dilemma is getting the info off the drives to put on a different drive in a different computer. No USB to transfer to another ... Read more

A:Newbie needs some help

Well, there are a number of choices to transfer the data without the USBs, depending on what's still working.

1st way - Have you checked the ethernet jack? Does it still work? By using a crossover cable (a special ethernet cable that allows for direct connecting a PC to another PC), you could do a direct transfer of data that way.

2nd way - If this computer is on a home network, transfers can be done using the Windows Network Wizard, and activating the Shared Files/Printers functions.

3rd way - Remove the hard drives from the aflicted machine and install into the new computer as a second HD - instant transfer of data that way (but not programs, as they would need to be reinstalled on that computer's boot HD).

4th way - Remove the HD and install into an external HD case (NOT THE ONE THAT FELL - It killed your other motherboard) and simply plug it into the USB of the new machine.

hi, welcome to TSG.

I don't see anything in your log apart from two anti virus programmes which could be the cause of the crashes freezes etc!
Get rid of one, either Norton or AVG and keep the other one as they will conflict with each other and make your computer unstable.

open ewido and turn off its security guard until we are finished as it can interfere with the fixes!

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):

Assuming this message is appearing in Windows, can you please provide a screenshot of the pop-ups you're referring to?

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Have you made any recent software or hardware changes, and now you're experiencing this issue?

Hello -- My first post. Any assistance in solving this would be appreciated. And I apologize if this problem has appeared already and I was unable to find it while examining the site.Started a few weeks ago. While surfing using IE6, I suddenly get unwanted Pop-up adds (not many) and mainly pops that want me to identify the name of a US actor (such as Will Smith, or a very youg Michael Jackson, etc). The title of the Pop Ups are always "NULL". Computer is not running slow. The only line from HijackThis that looks suspicious to me is:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [memo rect] C:\DOCUME~1\George\APPLIC~1\OKAYPL~1\DefyPileUser.exeIn addition, I found a directory that means nothing to me on my C: drive in two separate locations (shown exactly as they appear on WinExplorer):C:\Program Files\OKAY PLAN PEAK {no files sappear in this directory}C:\Documents and Settings\SurferParis\Application Data\OKAY PLAN PEAK {this contains 3 files named Aceonedog.exe, cbzqvzha.exe, and DefyPileUser.exe}Below is the output from HijackThis.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 11:50:24 AM, on 18/02/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16414)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evx... Yesterday, I installed Windows 7 on my computer (I was previously running Vista). Windows Update informed me that I had 39 to load. I said ok and pressed the button. However, when it got to 89% loaded it froze! I've tried installing the updates again but nothing happens. Any help here would be appreciated.

Hi all,

I recently purchased a computer with a legal copy of XPpro installed, but it has some issues & no installation disk was included. I have a second copy of XPpro installed on another computer with the disk. I downloaded Magical Jellybean & retrieved the codes from the new computer.

Question is:

Can I use the disk I have to reload XP onto the new computer & use the installation code retrieved via Jellybean to have a legal copy on both computers?

Thanks, Butch.

A:I'm a newbie & need some help

Hi,

As long as you have a valid licence key for each computer there should be no problem in using the the same installation disc.

However if the installation disc is an OEM version supplied with the old computer then it may not work if the newer system is from a different manufacturer.

I keep seeing HJT mentioned in forums such as this, so I decided to create a log. I need help with my puter...but don't really know whats wrong or where to even begin fixing the problem...if I knew what the problem was. Let me explain.
I run my virus scan daily. Yesterday it showed 2 virus and cleaned one but not the other. When it wouldn't clean/delete/quarantine - I got online with McAfee and they walked me through cleaning it. It took several phone calls and all but we finally got it cleaned. I just would follow their step by step directions.
So..thinking it was all clean - I then rebooted. When I did - and then tried to sign back online - I have been unable to do so. Modem would not initialize, etc.
Now I get on tech support with AOL to figure out what the problem is now. They give me 4 or 5 things to try/do.
Finally they tell me to remove AOL and reload it.
I did that today and in the middle of that process my "Low Virtual Memory" error came up and from then on it's basically a frozen computer, can't do anything but turn off at the wall.
I have now rebooted in 'safe mode' but don't have a clue what to do now? I don't know what to fix or repair or look for. I'm at a loss now.
Any one got any suggestions? I have a major paper on my computer that I need printed by in the morning and can't get anything to open. And then I need to send it via email and can't get online. So i'm just in a big ole bind.
Thanks for your time
