Lenovo W530. Won't start, power and charging lights always off.

Q: Lenovo W530. Won't start, power and charging lights always off.

Currently have a Lenovo W530 that won't turn on. Right before the laptop "died" I was doing work and it was plugged in and then it suddenly just turned off. When I plug the laptop in the charging indicator light does not turn on (nor do any lights). Here is what I've attempted:Removed the battery and unplug from power and hold the power button for a minute to dissipate any charge that may remain. Then I just plug in the charger and try to turn the laptop back onPurchased a new battery chargerIn both cases nothing has changed, it seems like the laptop is just dead. My next attempt would be to replace the CMOS battery but I feel like I should be getting some sort of response from the charge being plugged in, regardless whether or not it needs a new CMOS battery. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo W530. Won't start, power and charging lights always off.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello: Just received a beautiful W530 Laptop - love the T and W versions of this machines. However, with such a large power requirement, want to make sure that I will be able to run and charge the W530 on United Airlines, American Airlines, etc., using the supplied 170 W Power supply...  Please confirm your experience that this will work. Otherwise, using this laptop on long haul flights will not work.

Hey Community, I'm in dire need for help, my lenovo Y50-70 has been working fine for the past 3 years now and JUST after the warrenty is up, my battery becomes funky. I noticed that whenever I load up a game, the charger becomes unrecognized and instead of regular led lights, i get one blinking white light and one blinking orange light. When I remove the AC adapter and plug it back in, it'll recognize the charger and ocasionally it'll take some time to recognize it. It stops charging when the LED lights begin to blink. I've tried to1. "remove the static" or drain the battery by unplugging the AC adapter2. holding down the power button for 30 seconds (I didnt remove the battery because it's not a removable battery, Should I?).3. Changed the power settings to high performance and no conservation of power.4. I bought a new adapter and it's still happening, I have no idea what to do. Intially prior of buying a new adapter it drained and I couldnt figure out a way to get it to charge. With the new adapter I was able to charge it till full, but when I have it on, it does the same thing.  Please help me community, you kind souls. Best,Richard

Hello,

I have one of the newer model Dell Inspirion laptops. How do I turn off the light that accompanies the power button and the charge light on the front. I'm able to turn off my backlit keyboard, but these two other lights are quite bright and annoying when I'm trying to play movies in a dark room.

A:Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

Hi DELLUSER16486,
What is the exact system model?
The power led and the leds on front are also used as diagnostic indicators. If there is any hardware issue on the machine, these leds help isolate the source of the issue. Hence, there is no way to disable the leds from turning on, as they would be connected to a cable soldered to the motherboard.
Download the service manual / specifications for a better understanding of the machine - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download it from the Manual section.
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

A:Lenovo W530 to P50 power tip adapter?

I believe there is no such thing.  The laptop's power circuitry identifies the power supply by checking the resistance between the signal pin (center) and ground.  First, none of the adapters available pass through the signal pin.  Even if you could find an adapter that passes it through, it wouldn't work.  The round tip on the W530 uses 1500 ohms for a 170-watt adapter.  The slim tip (rectangular) tip for the P50 uses 1900 ohms.

Hi all Having major issues you with my Yoga 910. It was working normally one day, then the next day when I powered it on and tried to use it, it would sort of freeze on a specific webpage (my online banking site, nothing sketchy). I would have no track pad movement, no keys worked, power buttons wouldn't do anything, but the screen stayed on and wasn't frozen- the cursor in a text field would continue to flash. I held the power button for ~20 seconds to reset, and tried again. Repeated this 3X total. Then, upon booting up again using the one key reset button next to the power button I tried to restore to a previous point. After clicking through the menus, it attempted to restore and restard. However, at this point, it would no longer boot up in to windows. It would say applying automatic repairs, then diagnosing problems, then a smalm black command prompt box flashes for just a moment. It then takes me to a blue screen saying it didn't boot up properly, restart or go do advanced options. I then tried reset functions, both keep files and full factory reset, but after only a second it says system couldn't reset and offers to shut down. I tried this several times, as well as running start up repair, and recovering to several previous points. Now when I try to recover to a previous point, it says "you must enable system protection on this drive." I tried every option offered in all of the advanced troubleshooting menus to no avail, so I powered off and went to... Read more

Hi.  I need some help with my lenovo g50-30 laptop.  The issue was, that  on the power socket a + and a gnd wire broke off, so it would not charge the battery.  I took the laptop appart and resoldered the broken wires back in place, and now the laptop is dead. No led lights no nothing.  When i was taking it appart, neither the power cord, nor the battery was connected. I checked voltage with a multimeter, and the power socket is now ok, because 20v do come to the motherboard.  Also i checked continuity on the ribbon cable, from the power button, all seams fine.   Any suggestions what might be wrong, or what i have done wrong? Thanks

Here's a bit of a longshot, but I'm hoping that it can be salvaged. A year ago our Z50-70 decided that it would shut itself down and not turn back on again. It's been sat in a drawer ever since, until yesterday when I decided to give it a look. Our son has a Z50-75, so I tried his charger - nothing. I then tried his battery and it turned on. The laptop boots in to Windows and works 'as normal' except the sound does not work. When connecting the charger it shows as 'charging' and the LED light comes on, however, it is not charging. Remove the battery and the laptop will not turn on at all. I have tried all the steps previously mentioned about reinstalling/removing battery drivers. I have downloaded and installed the battery management app. I'm in the process of updating Windows 10 with all new updates to see if that does anything, but I'm at a loss.  I have tested the power connector (to the motherboard) and all is working fine on there. Any ideas?

My lenovo b50-70 is a bit old I have it from 2011 and it used to work perfectly initially. However it recently stopped working so I took it to a laptop service center where they changed the motherboard and the plastic exterior. Now the video card doesn't work anymore and the power button often starts blinking and this process also stops the battery from charging. I basically need a code that can deal with the errors of the video card and the power management errors. All drivers are up-to-date in this case some of them as back as 2006.

Most people prefer batteries to charge to somewhere in the 90's and to start charging somewhat lower.  (I set it to 75%.)  This kind of setting makes the battery last longer.  Limits can be set using Lenovo Vantage.

Problem: W530 not charging with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 1. My W530's battery charges when not plugged into my Mini Dock Plus Series 3. 2. When the W530 is attached to the dock at first the Windows power icon shows that the W530 is connected to the power brick, and shows that it is charging. Charging lasts for about 15 seconds.  Then it stops charging (but continues to show that it is connected to the power brick) and runs from the battery, I can watch the % charge constantly lower. 3. I have updated the BIOS and Drivers from the Lenovo site, this made no difference. 4. I carefully cleaned the contacts on the W530 and dock, this made no difference. 5. None of the pins on the W530 or dock appear to be damaged, I closely examined them with a magnifying lens. Does anyone have any suggestions and/or ideas to resolve tis problem? Thanks, Bob

Hi all. I would like to ask you about the battery discharging process while having thresholds applied. I have them set to 50/90 with the 9-cell battery. On Ubuntu, once the upper threshold has been reached the battery stays at that threshold forever, provided AC is plugged in. The other scenario is that if the charge is within the range specified by these thresholds (so [50,90]) and I plug it in, it does not charge it (which is good) but it does not discharge it either (is that good too?). Now, my question is - should it be working like that or should it stop charging the battery and let it reach the lower threshold, after which it would charge it up to the upper threshold, which would essentially be a kind of hysteresis loop? Which would be better for extending the battery's lifespan? Thanks,Przemek

Recently got a new(used) W530 and have been putting it through its paces to ensure everything is functional before my return window is up.After battling through some issues I believe everything checks out and I just loaded Windows 10 and began configuring it for my setup. One thing that I just can't get working right is the "rapid charging" and Always On USB configuration. Here is my understanding to frame the issue (please correct me where I'm wrong):1) The W530 has a yellow USB port in the back that is supposed to be capable of "rapid charging"2) The W530 has the ability to be configured with "always on usb charging" if properly configured in the BIOS.So I've got the 2 settings in the BIOS enabled that should allow always on. Lenovo Vantage software also confirms this is enabled.And...things actually work. That is to say when my computer is in sleep, standby, or totally off.Additionally, when plugged into the yellow USB port my android phone shows as "rapid charge" on it's lock screen. The problem is when the computer is actually awake. The minute it leaves one of the standby/off modes the phone falls back to slow charging.I've played around with all the power management settings I could think of:- Disabled in devices "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"- In power plan disabled "selective suspend" on USB- In power plan disabled "link state power management"Nothing seems to make it charge faster when the computer is on.I'm concerned that the issue may be w... TL: DR;  I'm trying to figure out exactly how much battery run-time I should get on my W530 with a 9-cell battery AND how long such a battery should take to charge. I realize these are somewhat subjective, but what I'm finding is that Power Manager wavers between about 4-6 hours when the battery is at 100%.  This is with the laptop in "power savings mode" (battery optimization but not battery stretch).  This is also with limited or no use of the machine.  Basically jut moving the mouse around or typing in Notepad. If I start to do some basic work (like web browsing) then PM adjusts to the 2-3 hour mark. It also appears that it takes approximately 6 hours to charge the battery to full (with the laptop on in same state as above). Do these numbers seem relatively normal? 2-3 hours for web browsing and a 6 hour recharge time? Background info: I just bought this used W530.  It appears to be in great shape cosmetically and has passed all diagnostic tests I have run.  Basic specs: i7-384032 GB RAM256 SSDK2000 I purchased a "new" 9 cell battery off of Amazon, not Lenovo branded but supposedly a "70++" 94Wh (which is confirmed by the battery case itself). This battery is only reporting a "Full Charge Capacity" of 85.92Wh so it is clearly not exactly what was advertised.  For the price though an 86Wh battery is still pretty decent.  However, I have some concerns about how much power I'm getting and how... So I had my yoga 920 conk out on me at a VERY inopportune time, next month I go abroad to study. Yesterday I started my laptop and started some light browsing when it suddenly shut down. I tried starting it up again, when it came up with the dreaded blue screen saying 'failed to detect boot device' or something. Third boot try onwards, the laptop does not respond to charging, no lights come on, nothing, NADA. Worst part of it? This happened within 10 months of my purchase from USA. I have 54 days of my warranty remaining. I tried static discharges multiple times, no luck.Went to multiple service centers in Pune, India, but they refused to diagnose the issue saying that they do not service this model since it was not released in India. I'm ready to ship this laptop to the USA with my own expenses to have it fixed or replaced, but so far no customer service has been able to help me out.Any bright ideas/contacts?

There was no power charge light beside the power cord on the side of the laptop, however I came back 20 minutes later and there was a white charge light. I then powered it up and was on it for about 10 minutes before it crashed again. It is sitting on my desk now on charge. no lights on or anything and it won't turn on. Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

Unplug the system, disconnect the battery (remove the base cover to access it), and hold the power button for 30 sec.
Verify that the LED on the adapter or DC plug is ON before you continue.  If it's not, the adapter is bad and will need to be replaced.
Remove and reinstall both memory modules.
Power on on AC only with the battery disconnected.  If it will but won't with the battery in place, the battery is bad;  replace it.
If the system still won't power up, replace the mainboard.

My Lenovo G50-30 laptop has suddenly developed a funny problem.  When battery charger is introduced while laptop is on it says "plugged in but not charging" and battery keeps reducing, however battery charges when laptop is switched off. The problem has started happening from approx a 3-4 weeks back. My battery was under warranty and was replaced by Lenovo authorised center Jogeswari (West), Mumbai, India BUT still issue reamins the same.  Service center installed a software called OKO care which randomly allowed charging three times while laptop was ON. However this also did not permanently solve my problem and returned back to same issue hence un-installed software. Then had tried couple of other lenovo softwares (vantage, forgot name of anotehr one) but in vain.  Pls organise immediate help as I have exams starting September 19, 2019 and need laptop very badly for preparing and cant afford to switch off to recharge. Thank you in advance. FYI - There is no capping not to charge beyond 55-60% to safeguard battery. I have Windows 10 (64 bit OS), initial OS which came along with laptop was Windows 8.1 which automatically got upgraded to Windows 10. My laptop is always kept on auto update hence all latest updates are installed. I do not allow any unnecessary software installation.

A:Lenovo G50-30 Battery charging issue - "plugged in but not charging"

That sounds suspiciously like the laptop is in Airport Mode, which if enabled will prevent it from charging when on, yet charge when off, just like you describe.  You can find out via a command promptRight click on start and select Command Prompt (Admin)  -or- Windows PowerShell (Admin)  depending on your system configuration. At the prompt type:  powercfg /getactivescheme    and press EnterIf it comes back with something similar to the image below showing (Airplane) as the active scheme,  then that is likely the culprit. Click on Image to expandIf you find that it is enabled, at the same command prompt window type:  control powercfg.cpl   and press Enter to open the Power control panel applet, and then check to see if Airplane Mode is set as your current power plan. As a last resort, you can also type:  powercfg ?restoredefaultschemes  to reset the Windows power schemes to their default settings.  Best of luck,

Hi Guys, I have had to change my battery, got a brand new DELL battery but I can't get it to charge...I'm running Windows 10 PRO. I have tried the fixes listed above but unfortunately NONE has solved my problem. Any suggestions?

A:XPS 12 9Q23 Power Charging Disabled / Plugged in, NOT CHARGING

Hi DAEMONROD.
Where have you purchased the battery from? Does the old battery charge fine when plugged in?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Test another power adapter and check. If the adapter fits in loose, then the dc port needs to be replaced. You would need this part.

The only way I can power on the laptop after a shutdown is to: remove the power adapter and battery, press the power button 10 times and then hold it for 10 seconds, reinstall just the battery and it fires right up. Does anybody know a solution for this? BIOS setting, CMOS battery, clone exorcism? Thanks for any info.

I have a LeNovo IdeaPad 100-15IBD, Model Name 80QQ, purchased Feb 2015. When I try to power it up, the power light comes on and the battery light comes on, but there's no fan and the screen is black. If I press and hold the power button for 10 seconds (with the lights on) the lights go off again, which I presume is doing a hard power down. I have tried removing the AC power and the battery (which involves taking the keyboard off first!), leaving it an hour, pressing and holding the power button several times for 20 seconds each, then plugging the battery and AC back in and powering up - but the symptoms are unchanged - power light, battery light, no fan, black screen. I have tried the "One Key Recovery" procedure using the Novo key - this produces the same symptoms as a normal power up - power light and battery light come on, but no screen and no fan. Any suggestions? I'm still in warranty so worst case I can send it off to get it fixed, but I'd rather find a way to fix it myself and not have to send it away.

I have a lenovo W530.   About 8 weeks ago it started having a problem that when I try to get it to sleep by just closing the lid, it doesn't.   The problem is not consistent, but it happening several times per week.   When I close the lid, it is usually because I'm packing my bags to go to another location.   The laptop remains powered on, the screen remains powered on, and then it gets SUPER hot.   Like can't touch the laptop with your hands without burning yourself hot. Since I couldn't figure out why sometimes it would sleep and sometimes it wouldn't, I thought maybe it wasn't "detecting" the lid close, so I decided to try to sleep it manually and THEN close the lid. Frequently, it just won't sleep.   I go to the start menu (Windows 7) and tell it to Sleep, and the screen goes black, but I continue to have the "Wireless activity" light lit solid and the "hard drive activity" light will flicker for a very long time.  It never sleeps.   Of course, at that point, I've also lost the ability to CANCEL the sleep and save my files and log out, etc.    Eventually, I either have to power off through holding the power button down until it "clicks". If I close the lid anyway, and put my laptop in my bag, it "superheats" and either the battery goes so low it hibernates, or it stays on, but when I open the lid again it has power-cycled and I have to enter my PGP Full Disk Encryption password to start up. Any sug...
