Q: Cannot Save Excel file for others to view on Network

Hi
I am using Exel 2010 - when I save my workbook on the server for the rest of the team to look at, my changes do not show up in their version. However, when I pull up the workbook on my system - all my changes are there. Also, I cannot see their changes eventhough we are all using the "same" workbook name.....

Help please.

Hi i have 2 problems.

After i reformatted my computer, i cant seem to view source on sites anymore. the notepad doesnt pop up at all. Its not that the site is protected because it doesn't work on any site that i tried on. Does anyone know why its like this and how i can get it working again.

I cant seem to save any pictures as .JPEG files or any other extention's except .BMP . Even the "save as type" only has BMP. Does anyone know
how to save it as jpeg by not typing "****.jpeg"

It's driving me nuts!! Every time I save a file with the Windows File Save dialog, it opens in large icons view. Anyone know how to get it to remember details view? It's a real pita to keep changing it. I notice this especially when downloading in Firefox. First it only opens in compressed view. Then you hit browse tab. For a while after that it opens the full window, but the view is large icons. You change to details. Next time it's back at icon view!!! ARRRRRRghhhhh!!!!!

While there is no way to have these small dialog type boxes to have their folder view settings remembered, you can try resetting all folder view setting using the download in METHOD TWO to see if it may be able to at least reset it to details view.

Hi

With my folders I usually change the view options to "Details", and order either "alphabetically" or by "date modified" but when I restart these settings are not saved and I have to do it again. Not the end of the world but is it something I can help or is it not?

How can I view a PDF file and an Excel file on the screen at the same same time? Every time I open a PDF file, everything shuts down, excel for the PDF. Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.

We have a shared file on the network that several people access at work. We are having a major problem that is causing some concern. No one is able to save the file after they make changes. The message is "Your changes could not be saved to 'name of file' but were saved to a temporary document named 'name of temp file'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name."

We have checked the rights and permissions and everyone that is working on it, has the proper permissions.

You guys have bailed me out before and I am hoping you can do so this time. I recently changed jobs and am registered as a new user - glad to be back. Thanks all!

I am working on a save functionality. I want to save one/or two tabs while having more in the workbook.

I used this code: But it saves all of them

Files and worksheets are fundamentally different, yet intrinsically tied - I don't think you can do this.
I believe you could export the worksheets you want to save to a new workbook, however, and save that as a new file.

In Excel 2010, I opened a Read-only file, made a lot of changes, and tried to File-Save As.

Nothing happens.

A web-search I got some info, maybe the MS Office update tool was recently installed? Not in my case.

go to explorer, the read-only file and check off Read-only in Properties. Can't, its not saved to anything, and Excel gives a message the file is read-only, please save under a new file name.

I tried File Save As, but nothing happens, no dialog box to input a new file name.

BTW, this is a large excel file, around 27 MB.

Offhand, wondering if the Save As dialog box is opening behind the Excel program window. Maybe reducing the size of the excel window, then trying save as again? (it may be visible if that is happening) Also a possibility is to just try Save. That should produce a message and also offer the opportunity to Save As. Any additional info you can acquire will be helpful for resolving this.

Hello,

There are several users in our department where saving Excel files (2 - 5MB in size) are saving very slowly. This is a problem that has been going on for multiple days and users have tried restarting the computer to no avail. If they save the document locally, it's fine but not over the network. I've pinged the destination and it completes in a reasonable amount of time. Only Excel seems to be doing this. No other programs are having problems. Any advice on where to go from here?

Hi there

I received an Excel file that was saved as Excel 2000 in my email from a friend of mine. The file is 495 KB. I can open the file but I get a message that reads "Save not complete. File rename failed. Retry??" the message has two buttons - "Retry" and "Cancel". When I press "Retry" I get the same message. If I click on "Cancel", I get no mesage. I then save the file but I get another message that says "Document not saved". I have tried changing the file name but nothing works. By the way, the file has macros. Any ideas on how to save the file??

I can't send it to you due to the snsitivity of the data and the high KB.

Hi Mario,
You mention the file is saved as Excel 2000, what is your version of Excel?
Have you tried the many Save As options?
If you just need the data you coud save it as a non-macro embeded workbook (2007 and newer) with extension xlsx.
Have you saved the attachment before opening it?
Is the location a network drive of local drive?
If you can open it you could copy every sheet to a new workbook and then try and save this new workbook
Is the VBA project password protected or can you open it, then you can also export all the vab modules to import them once you suceed with a macro-less workbook.

When Excel saves my workbook file, it changes the NTFS ownership of the file to the user account that is using Excel. I need it to allow the data to be changed within the workbook, but not change the file's ownership. Any ideas?

Hi I set up a second User account for a friend so an office associate can sign in to access a spreadsheet on his PC.

From the Admin's account I shared to the new account with Read/Write privileges. I didn't see any higher sharing permissions but really didn't poke around much.

So I get a call from him today that associate is able to edit the spreadsheet but not save it to her account, gets an error. I'm waiting for the text of the error to google.

I'm hoping Office experts will know what else needs to be done. Did I miss an extra sharing permission?

The error message in detail will give us more to go with but within Excel itself it is possible to 'protect' the worksheets and/or the workbook. Have you discounted that as being the problem? Cheers.

It is possible that someone else was accessing the Excel spreadsheet at the same time as you. By the sounds of it, they connected to it before you.

You just have to be sure that nobody else is accessing the file when you connect to it.

I lost a few hours of work due to:
Suddenly unable to save a file in Excel. No warnings etc. Blissfully working (and saving) along but when I boot up again later I found the file 'not saved' but a random number file eg; BDF45000 in directory. Opens up in Excel but with only some data.

I did:
Run repair, Office 2003 Proff. (No change)
Check for 'read only' (Not the problem)
Use Reg Mechanic, cleaned up and defragged... (No change)
Save under different name. (No change)

I use AVG... could it be that a third party app interferes with a 'proper save'?.. or AVG interference whilst excel tries to save? I am a bit paranoid at this stage... not trusting the pc. Ideas?

All of a sudden, I get a sharing violation when I try to save an xls file in excel, even if I have not changed the file. I changed the default save type to xls from xlsx, and still have the issue. When I save the file as an xlsx, all is fine. It is almost as it Excel now does not enjoy munching on xls files. Any ideas??

I've got a small Excel file I've tried to save to a diskette, but, after the one time out of many tries it finally did write it, it won't read when I try to look at it, gives me an error message, So, I saved it to a CD-RW, everything went okay, I can read it, but now when I want to update it, it says "Cannot save the file xxxxxx. The file exists and is marked read only. Save the file with another file name or another location." And a couple of times it told me I did not have rights to access this file. I'm the only one on this computer, and I'm listed as the administrator, so I don't understand that either.

All I want to do is overwrite the file to update it every now and then. But I can't. I've always been able to do this on a diskette, but can't even do that now. Is it not possible to do this on a CD-RW? I don't want to write a new file every couple of days. The diskette would be fine if I could get it to work. Can anybody give me some advice?

I'm just using what came on XP Home to burn disc's and always have, because I don't do any music coping and this has always worked fine up until now. Just did a reformat of my computer about three weeks ago, but I can't see why that would be a problem, I put it back just as it was to begin with.

If you leave the disc open, you can overwrite files as long as the disc is a -RW disc and not a standard -R disc. Honestly I've had bad experiences with -RW and leaving discs open. That was ages ago and CD-Rs are so cheap now. O've been told that OfficeXP doesn't like floppy discs. I have no proof of this. I haven't used a floppy in quite some time either.

I have been to Miscrosoft site and followed their hotfix instructions, still happens, but intermittently. Has anyone had this before?

I have 2 comps that have this prob, both running xp sp2, I can open files (word and excel 2000 and microsoft works 4.5) from the network no prob. I can also save the files to the network drive.
The prob happens when i try to save as to the network drive, I recive the error
(THE FOLDER IN NOT ACCESABLE, THE FOLDER MAY BE LOCATED ON AN UNAVAILABLE VOLUME OR PROTECTED WITH A PASSWORD)

I can save the file to my hard drive.
I have no password on the file and the network drive is accesable.

I have unistalled and reinstalled the office (did not help).

All other programs have no problems with save as on the network.

my system: vista 64 Ultimate, Office 2007, all updates, no viruses, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, C2D
Problem: I used to have office 2003. At some time word could not save anymore. so I switched to office 2007 thinking it is related to vista. when I start word 2007 I get the error message "could not create work file. check the environment variable". At first it wouldn't save either, but I fixed that by deleting the normal.dot It seems to work besides the annoying message. The other problem may be related: Excel can not save at all and crashes while trying and says: "MS Excel cannot open or save any documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space... to make memorey free...". all other Office applications seem to work well (haven't tried too much).
I googled and tried all the registry tricks (that's how I found the fix with deleting the normal.dot). I suspect at some time I changed something and can't remember what. but word 2003 worked at some time. I have reinstalled Office multiple times (deleted registry entries etc.) Nada. My links to the temp folders in environment variables should be correct. I had meddled with those at some point.
I searched the forum, haven't found anything. Sorry in case I overlooked something here.

Edit: I have the swap file size on "automatic", despite 8 GB of RAM. I only have one account (administrator)

When I try to save a file to a folder I have in MS Excel 2010 I don't see all the that are really in that folder. Only the last 10 or so are there. My boss is trying to save an excell document into his Project Folder but when he hits save as only certain documents show up and none of them are the Folders that are definately created and can be accessed when you go to Windows Explorer. Is there a way to change this?

About a week ago, I started having issues saving excel spreadsheets. If I try to save them, I get the message that file is currently in use, try again later. I can rename the file and save it, but when I open the new file again and try to save that, I get the same message again. No one else is using the files and I have done the following to try and resolve this:
- deleted my profile on my primary Windows XP SP3 PC
- went to a Windows 7 PC with the same results.
- Ran Process Explorer to see which service has the file in use and got the message non-existent process

This only appears to be happening in Excel 2007, Word and PowerPoint are fine and no other users are reporting this issue. Has anyone else seen this happen?

I'm trying to figure out how to make it so that a very long checklist, which includes checkboxes and text boxes, can be transferred to excel. (I'm working with the Microsoft Office 2007 suite.) I've been reading about how you're supposed to enable the "Save Data as Delimited Text File" in the advanced part section of the 'Tools' Options tab, and then save it as a text file to import into excel, but when I do that it doesn't save any information, just two zeros. I've been looking at other forum questions and messing around with how the forms are protected or not, but I can't get it to actually save any of what's entered in to the forms when I save it as a text file. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Hello all. Not a regular user of Excel; but do need help in creating something that would be useful to me and a few others at work. I suppose the best way of explaining what I'm after is by giving an example.

I have a directory C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson
In Cape Nelson are a number of folders named alpha beta charlie delta echo and foxtrot and so on.

I would like to have an excel template in "Cape Nelson" with a macro that when activated names the file as whatever folder name might be in say cell A1 and whatever ever date might be in cell B1. Eg charlie_15-mar-2013.xls
This then is saved in the relevant folder. So in the end I would end up with
C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson\charlie\charlie_15-mar-2013.xls

Also the macro script would ensure that the macro was disabled in the saved file.

Hoping this is achievable and look forward to replies.

I have a spreadsheet that is used by a number of users and has a macro built into it to collect updates from several other sheets. I want to add to the macro so that once it has been updated and saved the macro then saves another version of the sheet in a seperate folder with the date and time it was saved as part of the file name.

Excel 2010 SUM Formula updates, save file and reopen - values revert to old yet SUM totals are new

Hi guys
We have a very strange problem, our user opened his .xls document (97-2003 format) yesterday and updated several values, copied formula and updated (eg monthly/weekly totals). The worksheet includes many small SUM's spanning a couple of cells with sub-totals. He then saved his work and shut down as usual.
When opening the .xls document this morning, to continue his work, he noticed some of the values had changed (we assume to the previous ones) yet the totals where still the updated 'saved' values. Changing any values causes Excel to recalculate the totals (which then become correct, yet old totals)
Yesterday I updated the computer from a Windows XP (SP3), Office XP (SP3) to a Windows 7 (32bit, SP1), Office 2010 (SP1).
We've advised him to change document types to the new .xlsx format and to doublecheck everything.

Any ideas to the actual cause? Thanks

Hi,
When saving a file using "Save as" (From Office, for example), I can see in the target folder only the files matching the selected type. Is there an option to see all file types immediately, regardless of the selected file type? This would be very helpful, especially when looking for files with similar names and in order to get a quicker overview of the contents of the folder.

I have a computer actng as a file server. One of Its hard drives is shared at the root, and it is a mapped drive on another computer.

I am running Adobe Premier Pro on the second computer, and saving to the mapped network drive. If I save the file (CTRL+S), I get an error that reads:

Could Not open the project file with write access. The file may be locked or you may not have permission to wriite to this location. Select 'Save As' from the file menu to save the project to a new location.

If I choose 'Save as", I can save the file using a different name, but only once, If I choose "Save" I get the error again.

It seems that "Save As" is the only way to save the file.

The "Allow uses to change my files" option is checked in the sharing and security properties box.

I also have no problems with this configuration using other programs such as word.

Any help is appreciated.

Well, where to put this strange problem? XP, Office or Network Forum. All three seem to be involved somehow.

What gives?

I have a few large Excel files on
a) a share on a Win XP SP2 desktop
b) a share on a WIn Vista desktop
c) a share on a Ubuntu 6.06 desktop

When i mean large, i mean ~75Mb

When i work on my laptop (Win Xp SP2, 1Gb Ram, 1,86 GHz), i can access all shares just fine. But when i right click such a large Excel file on the XP or Vista computer and click 'Properties', my laptop becomes unresponsive for about a minute. Then, at last, the properties are shown. In the Taskmanager, on the LAN tab, it shows that my LAN connection is swamped at 70% for a whole minute. Sniffing the network traffic learns that the entire contents of the file is being transferred through the network to my laptop!
Just to see the properties...

However, when i right click the same file on a Ubuntu share, the properties come up instantly.

When i right click other large files on the XP/Vista shares (like *.iso of *.avi files), bingo, properties pop up instantly.

When i right click the large Excel files on the Xp/Vista share from a Win 2003 server (without office installed), voila, properties show up instantly.


So why is the whole Excel file transferred by just right clicking it for properties?

I've a P4 machine having enough memory and disk space at local system as well as on the remote shared host. When I'm going to save a doc file (Office 2003), its giving the below attached error message. Pls suggest.... Any help will be appreciated.

Do you have the right permissions on that drive? I assume that it is another computer that your trying to save it on. Have you tried like it suggested another drive to narrow down the problem?

I setup a home network with 2 computers.
With 2nd computer I can open the files from Main Computer, but when I have to save them it will not allow me to save on the main computer.

So I have to save on the 2nd computer's hard drive. What do I need to fix in order to be able to save the files in the main computer where the original files are????

Using Office 2007, I can save files, Word/Excel, on my laptop. But I can not save to the network server. When I try to save to the server, a file is created with no information in it, and I received an error message that "file was not saved". I can paste and copy the file to the server. Had a local IT guy look at it and was unable to fix the problem. Don't know what to do next. Any thoughts?

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." I have looking at my network shield in Avast! Pro. I've noticed that whenever I open save file prompt I see http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ spike.
It does not indicate infection and just goes on, is this stuff normal?

Malwarebytes doesn't see anything wrong. I generally get a http://192.168.1.1:5678/igd.xml spike precedes the 127... spike

Avast boot scan also finds nothing
Typing http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ into Run gets "Bad Request - Invalid Hostname

HTTP Error 400. The request hostname is invalid."
Can anyone else on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit try this for themselves?

Open a save file prompt and look at your network shield at the same time and see if that connection or a similar connection shows up.

I don't seem to have any weird issues otherwise.

I have a problem in saving an excel file on to another pc in the network, which has windows xp. But before I used in both pc?s windows xp & that time there were no problem saving on to the other pc.
Now I use windows 7 32bit (Service pack1) in my pc & other pc on network is windows xp. Im doing some thing on Microsoft Excel 2007 (password protected file) in windows7 pc & when I saving to windows xp pc, most of the time saving bar displayed & say document not saved. But that time some TMP file will be saved in windows xp pc.
Im opening the excel file from network windows xp pc & im doing the amendments from windows7 pc & saving back to winxp pc.
Original file is at winxp pc. Im opening it from win7 pc.
I have changed the below settings also in the win7 pc. But only some times this problem occurs. Some times I can save smoothly.
I wanted to know why this problem comes only some times.
I must say when I using in both pc?s winxp OS nothing happened.
I changed the settings in win7 pc as below,
*Network discovery ? off
*Enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption
Please give me a help how to solve this saving issue.

First of all, you're going to want Network Discovery turned on if you're sharing files on the network.

Is this only one file, only on excel, or is this a random problem saving ANY files on the network.

Please make sure each computer has full permissions over the file you are trying to edit.

I had some issues with Excel working over a Network share and i would have to wait for like 2 - 3 minutes for the file to become usable. has anyone else had this issue?

Received a few MS Excel files from an outside vendor as e-mail attachment. I am able to save the attachement to My Doc or desktop and then open or open them directly from Outlook 2003 or 2007.

But when I tried to save the doc with or without making changes, the spreadsheet just sits there and saying Saving at the bottom. I waited several miniutes to be saved, but it just sits there. It does not taking any extra resources. On Application event viewer, it just displayes application hang error.
