Broadband Speed Tests

Q: Broadband Speed Tests

speedtest.net - I have pinged about 10 servers tonight, half in France and half in Ireland & UK. Every French server is pathetically slow in download and pings (28ms) and uploads are in the region of 4-5 everywhere, I am supposed to be on 11. Best was Virgin Media Croydon with 125MB (I am on 120MB at present) and 12ms ping (I used to get 7ms) with slow upload again!

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

I really would not put too much weight against what speed test results show. If you want to check what your Upstream & Downstream are. Run Shaper Probe.

Many of us (me included) are concerned about how "fast" our ISP (Internet Service Provider) is. Here are five different speed test sites in the US to help you answer that question. To get an accurate assesment of yours run tests several times at different times of the day and on different days.
If your ISP sold you a package with a download speed of, say, 25Mbs and your result is only 14Mbs, that's normal. ISP's advertise the maximum speed their network is capable of during a very light load. More users online and the speed drops far off the adveritsed rate.
In my experience with a wired router the available speed is divided by the number of connections to it which are active, I have no wireless so have no experience with that.

   Tip
For best results clear your browser cache, cookies, temp files, etc. before a test.
The farther you are from the test server, the lower your results.

Speedtest.net This one has a map and lets you choose worldwide servers to test with.

Wide Open West

Audit My PC

c|NET Cnet may go wordwide I don't know, it has options to check where you are, work, home, etc. and I got widely varying results with each.

SpeakEasy This is what my ISP (Comcast) uses when they are here for a service call, I thought it was because it always gave the best result, but not true after I checked on the other sites.

Good day to all. I am using AT&T(sbcglobal) dsl. My plan is for the speed of 1mb and under. Now, I realize I am not going to get 1mb, the speed will be under. But the tests I am running are showing speeds around or under 1/4 of a mb. All these tests were run one right after another, at 5 different times of the day, from 8am to 11pm for 3 consecutive days. I have 2 computers running XP that I ran the tests on, and there are no problems with either computer, other than the internet speed. Here are the results.

Speedtest.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

Speakeasy.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

McAfee Internet connection speedometer: 200kbps

CNet Bandwidth Meter: line speed 224kbps

Now, when I run my ISPs speed test AT&T Speedtest, the test shows my speed is: download: 1.58mbps / upload: 0.31mbps. I don`t understand the large difference in speeds I am getting from independent speed tests, and the speedtest from my ISP. Now if I am to believe my ISPs speedtest, they are going to try to tell me I am receiving more download speed than I am paying for. I find that very hard to believe.

Since this is the first time I have looked into this, I am kind of in the dark about how much speed is expected exactly, but 0.24 seems on the low side to me. I know I will have to contact my ISP to look indepth into this problem, and that is why I came here first. I don`t want to sound like a complete idiot when I contact them. Hopefully someone can look at my speed... Read more

I am not too clever when it comes to all these numbers on the laptop. But I was downloading a UK program and it's taking forever. I am downloading thru Megaupload via Firefox. I did a speed test and this is what it says. (By the way I am with Cox Cable),

DL = 13.36Mb/s
UL = 1.86Mb/s
Ping = 101ms

Is this okay? I DLd yesterday and it only took about 7 mins for a 30 min show ??? It's saying that this one is gonna be nearly 3 hours!

With the exception of ping, they are nearly the same as what I have. Ping is a measure of time it take to get a response from a server. You could try a different server for different response times. However there are numerous reasons for fluctuation ping results, which could simply be a bad day.

Hello,
Since I have installed W 7 my speed test results from DSL Reports are 1.5 Mbs. With XP they were just under 3 Mbs. I have tweaked 7 for high performance and low visual. My wife's Samsung laptop started exhibiting problems when she tried to upload attachments to web-based email. I eventually ran a speed test (on several different sites) and found that while the download portion of the test was great, the upload portion always failed. It actually seems to run but slows down and eventually times out. Several other devices using the same wireless router work fine. I've tried several things:
- Rebooted the router
- Taken down the firewall (Windows)
- Completely removed the virus software (AVG)
- Ran virus and malware checks
- Rebooted in safe mode with networking

All have no effect except rebooting in safe mode. Then, the upload works like a champ! So, it seems to me something is running that is blocking the upload. I've even went into MSCONFIG and systematically disabled services to see if any of them were the problem, again to no effect.

I'm pretty much out of ideas... Anyone help?

There is a "Performance Monitor" application built into Windows, that you can access through Administrative tools in the Control Panel. This can generate all sorts of reports and diagnostics on almost every part of your machine. It is a very powerful tool once you understand how to use it.

Hello all,
I have had various speed tests run on my Toshiba L875 with 4 gigs of Ram and a 640 GB hard drive. The speed tests are usually in the 75/35 range but even with Verizon FIOS they have been slow (upload speed has been). Speedtest.net won't even hardly register (getting like 40 over 3 to 5 for the download). I ran Malwarebytes last night and there were no infections but the system still is slow according to FIOS' speed test. I'm at a loss and need an option to figure out why this is occurring. Thanks for all you guys do.

PS: Will run another Malwarebytes scan now.

Hi:I know the answer to this will be simple,but I'll ask it anyway.
I have a desktop running xp sp2 using cox cable internet.I am very happy with the performance.
Just for info,I ran a speed test using Speakeasy and the result was about 12 mbps download.
Taking Johnwills advice from another thread,I did the same test using DSL reports.The result was 16mbps download.Both test sites are in LA.
I am just curious as to the difference and which one is closer to the true download speed.
Thanks for any info you can suggest.

Hi guys:Well my download speed has been up and down like a toilet seat for the past week.Today both speed tests show download at 12mbps.When it slows,it is around 7-8 mbps,which is still ok but is noticeable to me.
I have sent an email to my ISP(Cox) asking if they have had problems in our area.
But my question now is,and I know I am probably being paranoid,but I am just wondering if someone could be stealing my bandwidth.I am using WPA encryption.Is there a simple way that I could check it when my speed is down.I am using a Linksys wrt54g.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

I've been having this problem for 3 days now. I have a 5Mbps downstream 768kbps upstream dsl connection and noticed that webpages were opening noticeably slower and streaming video took ages to load. All speed tests I run show that I get around 300-400 kbps downstream even though my upstream is normal at around 600 kbps.
I know it is not my computer or browser since I've tried the tests on other computers in my house. I contacted my isp and they tested my phone line and said it was ok. They even changed the modem but it didn't help. I tried to connect using my isp's modem with router functionality and also as a bridge with my own router but I get the same results. The problem started happening overnight without any changes to any configuration in my home computers or the network. Today I noticed that I get much higher speeds (almost full bandwidth) when downloading torrents but as I said videos take forever to load and all speedtests show a very low downstream speed.
Anybody know what could be causing this? I suspect that it is a problem with my isp (perhaps with port 80?) but they say that everything shows up as normal on their side.

A:Torrents fast speed tests slow

DSL has issues with speed. I use to have 1.5mbps, then 3mbps and 5mbps. I even bypass the way DSL works in the home. You can do the same but take some time to do. Most you can get out of that is a much stronger signal. You tap into the main phone line that comes in like through a basement before it hits the phone. I use CAT5e with a phone jack box ran that to another phone jack box with a modular connector. That connector would use ultra phone line cable based on Cat 5e but for phone data. That would go to your DSL modem. It worked well. Now that I am cable modem I'll never go back to DSL.

Ok, to set the stage...I've been chatting with users who maintain that Windows 7 (just like Vista) is a bloated resource hog of an OS which needs to have numerous services disabled to attain performance levels equivalent to Windows XP SP2. The crux of the argument is typically on how Prefetch works and the caching of applications to RAM, thus not leaving large amounts of RAM free for the system and in generally just chewing up resources which are better left alone.

For this test, I performed the same steps on the same hardware. (In fact, I used the same exact machine). Here are the specs
* Asus P5QL Pro mobo
* Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 at 3.00Ghz
* 4GB Corsair DDR2-800 RAM
* 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue hard drive
* Samsung 22X DVD Burner
* EVGA Nvidia 8600GT 256MB video cards
* Intel 10/100/1000 NIC's

In each instance, the machine was using the defaults as they come out of the box. Meaning that things like UAC, System Restore Points, Indexing, PreFetch and the like all remained on.

Test 1: Install the Operating Systems. This was from the first push of the power button until I had a desktop with no hourglass
Windows XP SP2: 19:19
Windows 7 Ultimate: 14:12

Test 2: Amount of time installing drivers after OS was up to eliminate all exclamation points in Device Manager
Windows XP SP2: 9:27 (video, chipset, 2 lan drivers, audio, ATK)

The last couple of hours my "upload speed" has been going haywire. My tested speed at Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test it shows 0.8Mbps which is what I usually have. Task Manager shows I'm using 0Kbps, unless I'm saying something in mumble, which is the only program actually running. My friend that I'm talking to responds 5-6 seconds after I say something and he always responds with "I think you are lagging, all I can hear is robot noises" and I'm constantly getting disconnected from mumble. My Ethernet Status shows that I'm sending 1/10 of my received packages (13,960,000 sent, 149,128,000 over 30 minutes) so I'm not actually uploading anything.
My download is fine, I can browse websites just as before but as soon as something needs to be uploaded I just disconnect or it takes ****ing forever.
I have reset my router, 4 times. I have restarted my PC, more times than I can count on my fingers. Other PC's on the same network works fine. I have terminated all processes that windows doesn't need to run and mumble.

Hello, i am new here to seven forums, not sure if this is the right thread i should be asking in, but never know till i try. Anyhow, I am playing a game called Aion, and my Ping in that game is around 70~100Ms.

When i did a speed test to where the server was roughly located it said my ping was 14Ms - http://speedtest.net/result/1871105926.png

I use Verizon fios, 25/25 speed plan, a MI424WR Router, that was provided, and a wired connection.

*Also i do not have any FPS Lag, i am getting 50-60 frames.
*And i have leatrix latency fix installed, version 3.00

Could anyone please shed some light on my issue here? Would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

A:Ping mismatch between speed tests and actual in-game.

Hi Condiments and welcome to W7 Forums

Lots of factors come into play when it comes to Ping times. Firstly, remember that the value that you get at any particular time is what it is AT THAT TIME, i.e. Ping is a dynamic variable. Secondly, it depends on the load at both the destination server and any intermediate servers in the path between you and it - in other words, the more players connected the greater the load. Thirdly, your time of day and how many others are sharing your line (the contention ratio). Unfortunately, most of these are beyond your control (except, perhaps, the time of day that you choose to play). You could try logging out of the game and logging back in again, to see if by doing that you get any improvement (possible, if a different route between you and the game server is established).

I unplugged the Cat-5 cable from my DSL modem, connected a USB cable to the usb port on the modem, & restarted. My connection was back to normal for a few days, until my wife had some issue & she restarted the computer. After that, I'm back to maddening slowness!

Also, when I do a search on Google, I get redirected when I click on any results to "results.google.com". I also cannot download ANYTHING from Microsoft -- when I try it says "not available on this server"

This has all the makings of a virus, but it's not showing up on anything. I visted Pc Pitstop & paid $30 for Optimizer 3, which did nothing. I just completed a 2+ hour scan in safe mode with Avast, which again turned up nothing. All DSL performance scans turn up normal.

I called Verizon & they used gotoassist to check out my computer. They said my connection is actually quicker than what I am paying for, but you wouldn't know that after counting to 10 slowly before seeing any websites -- including this one.

I downloaded & ran Combofix at the recommendation of someone on another forum, but I... Read more

Hello - recently web browsing using Firefox (v29.0) has become very slow/choppy/laggy.

I've performed speed tests with my ISP and I am consitently at 10mpbs down and 3mps up, which are the expected rates.

This appears to be specifically an issue with web browsing with Firefox.

I used Avast 2014 (free) as my antivirus and all weekly scans find no viruses.  I've also scanne my computer using Malwarebytes (lates version) and nothing has been found.

I'm a bit puzzle by this as not much has changed on this computer in the past few months.  I'm not sure if this could be a virus/spyware/malware issue or just poor firefox performance more recent revisions of the browser.

Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, i am running tiscali 100mbps through a 3com router and wireless adaptor (56Mbps) but on both machines i only seem to get about 30-40Mbps (at once not together) is there any way i can check what the limit truly is? and any programs available to tweak the performance?

A:Tiscali 100Mbps +Router &wireless adaptor. Any speed tweaks or tests?

Which Tiscali service is this? I can only find 512kbps, 1mbps and 2mbps services on the Tiscali site.
You could try out the speed test facility on http://www.dslreports.com/stest. There's also tweaking tips/software on the same site.

Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading my DSL Broadband speed from the basic to the next level. My question is how much difference in performance will there be? What am to expect that will improve? What are the pros and cons on a faster broadband speed? Is broadband speed relative to modem speed?

Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks

A:Broadband Speed Vs Modem Speed

Broadband is normally MUCH faster than a dial-up modem. However, I think from your post that you already have broadband but want to upgrade to a more expense package. The difference in speed will be totally dependent on your internet service provider and what type of packages they offer.

I have Tiscali ASDL 512MBS

Over the last 2 days the speed had slowed well down

using the online speed checks I get the following:

Direction Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 466 Kbps (58.3 KB/sec) 503 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 111 Kbps (13.9 KB/sec) 119 Kbps (inc. overheads)

at one time the upstream was 33Kbs

I have a wireless router/modem and the problem occurs on all 3 networked PCs.
Is the problem with me or Tiscali?

It is driving me nuts! :knock:

It could be the server you were using is just real busy. Try a free online speed test. http://reviews.cnet.com/Bandwidth_meter/7004-7254_7-0.html

With cable, your download should be above 1500 KB.

A:broadband speed ??????

that 100 mbps is how fast you can transfer files from your pc to another pc on a network, not your internet speed. it will not change from upgrading internet services. you can test your internet speed by going to http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html and running there test. there are also other sites that will test your connection too. hope this helps

I am an unsophisticated user.  I have some questions regarding broadband speed.  I have AT&T DSL Elite Internet.  I found a link to an FCC site wherein you can test your broad band speed (link: http://www.broadband.gov/).  The results I got were as follows:

Download speed:  448 kbps
Upload speed:       231 kbps
Latency:                  42 ms
Jitter:                         2 ms

When I mouse over my internet icon in the system tray it says:

Local area connection
Speed:  100.0 Mbps
Status:  Connected

I went to the AT&T website and checked the various DSL options and they advertise as follows:

Pro internet:              Downstream speeds up to 3Mbps
Elite Internet:            Downstream speeds up to 6Mbps
Max Internet:             Downstream speeds up to 12Mbps
Max Plus Internet:     Downstream speeds up to 18Mbps
Max Turbo Internet:  Downstream speeds up to 24Mbps

Now for the questions:

1)  Can I assume the the connection speed of... Read more

I made the original post above, 2 days ago.  More than a little ironically, today I received a letter from AT&T, dated the same day (March 4) that states, "As part of our ongoing effort to provide you with the best possible internest exprerience, we regularly conduct quality checks to test the speed of your AT&T High Speed Internet service at your modem.  Our tests indicate that you are experiencing throughput speeds slower than the speed tier associated with your service plan."

As a result, they are lowering my monthly price.  This raises 2 questions:

1)  Is there any chance that AT&T monitors this website and is taking the above action as a result?
2)  What is throughput speed?  Is that the speed going into my modem from AT&T, or the speed that is going into my computer from the modem?  If the former, does that mean that no matter what plan I choose, with whatever modem, the internet speed I currently have is all I'll ever have with AT&T?

Thanks again.

HI

I have O2 Broadband premium with the O2 wireless box II on up to 20 meg. I would only ever get 2-4mb so I called them up and they said it was because I was using an telephone extension cable from the master socket in the livingroom up to my room and to change it to a broadband extension cable.

So I bought a RJ11 cable and I have done a few speed tests using various sites and show higher speeds from around 7mb to 12mb (depending when I test them) but whenever I download something it always downloads at the same speed around 150kbs to 250kbs? how is this when the speed test sites say I can get up to 12mbs?

I checked my uncles PC (stays across the road) and he is on talk talk and varies from 7mb to 12mb like myself and downloaded the same file from cnet and he was downloading at 1.5mbs - 2mbs where I was only 150kb to 200kb?? both are connected with ethernet cables.

why is there a big difference in speed?

How can I tell if my 1mb cable broadband is running at the right speed? I have gone onto different sites to get a speed check but I don't really understand the results. My oS is Windows XP Pro and my ISP is ntl. All I want to know is if it is running at the speed it is supposed to run at. I've just had an upgrade but it doesn't seem that much faster than the 300kbps I had before. Can someone please tell me how I can find out in language I can understand. The first test I did was at ADSL and the results were: Downstream actual speed 148 Kbps, Upstream Actual speed 28 Kbps. The second site was bandwidthplace.com and the results were: 532.5 kilobits per second. The third site was numion.com, which said Throughput 5580 Bps and Throughput 45 kbps. The last one was dslreports.com which gave me download speed of 951 kbps and upload speed of 42 kbps. I don't understand any of this. Please can someone help. Thanks in advance.

The way I gauged my download speed was to download something large from GigaNews. After a few minutes any "surge" settles down and you get a steady rate. Tests with small data tend to favor ISPs that give a short burst, boost, or spike. If the download is less than 100 MB or so, it's too short to get past the download spike.

Morning Guys, Maybe someone has ran across this and can help. I'm looking at a Insight Broad Band home network for a guy. 3 pc's on his router. He is paying for the 20.0 package, supposed to be 20 MB download. 2 of the pc's get about 18MB download, I figure this is about right with the modem (motorola surfboard sb 5100) and a (linksys wrt54g wireless router) all with current firmware. Insight say's everything is provisioned correctly. All pc's are wired with the longest run at about 100 ft. The middle run at 30 ft only get's about 10 MB download with several different speedtest. That pc is running XP Pro and all pc's have the same OS. All pc's are about the same, 2 to 2.5 gig processors. I have ran, hijackthis, spybot, adaware, super anti spyware, malwarebytes, combofix and his virus program along with online scanner Housecall. All came up clean. If not infected anywhere, where should I look for the speed loss. I changed cable ports on the router, changed nic card and cat 5 cable. I am at a loss on this, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

You should post this in the networking section here.

1. Are the network settings the same on all 3 computers? Especially DNS. Or are all 3 computers set up using DHCP?
2. Do you have anything else running at the same time as browsing? Especially updating software like antivirus/Adobe/Java/Apple or Quicktime/Windows updates? Try to stop it if you have.
3. Do you have any Firewall software running? You can temporarily disable it and see if it makes a difference.
4. Is the 3rd PC still slow when the other 2 are disconnected?
5. If you ping www.google.com do you get any timeouts?
6. Have you tried to use a different browser like Chrome or Firefox if you are using IE? You can also try resetting your browser or disabling any add-ons
7. Is the network cable of the 3rd PC running next to any power lines, fridges, heaters or anything that can cause electrical interference?
8. If you go into the properties of your network adapter and click on the advanced tab, is "Media Type" set to "auto Select"?

Please let us know.

Hi there seems to be so many 'Broadband speed' tests, which ones are the most accurate ? or are they very much the same?

Thx

A:Broadband Speed?

The test results can vary greatly, depending on which site you use, the location, and the time of day.

I'm fortunate to have a speed test site that my ISP provides locally, so the upload and download speeds are usually within 90% - 100% of what I pay for.

Hello & Happy New Year!

My ISP is BT & I am on the "Up To 8 Meg" package. When I use various Speed Test sites, they all show roughly the same figure of about 950 kbps for Downstream. However, when I complain to BT about this speed, they tell me to use their site: http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ & the results from the tests there confuse me.

Below are the last results I achieved & the Downstream figure is quite respectable!

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2016 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 928 kbps

I have kept screen-grabs of previous tests & the IP profile for my line, (whatever that is... BT cannot give me a straight answer!), has varied such as, 1000, 1500, 2000 & 2500. There was one time when my line profile was 3500 kbps which resulted in 448 kbps Upstrem, 4224 kbps Downstream & an actual throughput of 3240 kbps.

When I use BT's site to see "How Fast Can I Go", I have had different figures on different days - anything between 3Mb & 4.5Mb

I find it hard to argue with BT's Tech Support when referring to the results from their site as they show a reasonable Downstream figure. My question is, why do all the other test sites I use show a figure of about 950 kbps for Downstream when BT's site shows a figure about double all these others?

Any help o... Read more
