Cannot open folders in Start Menu by doubleclicking or rightclick-> Open or Explore

Q: Cannot open folders in Start Menu by doubleclicking or rightclick-> Open or Explore

I can't double-click folders in the Start menu to open them. Rightclicking and choosing
Open or Explore doesn't work either. When I release the Rightclick on Open or Explore
or Explore all users nothing happens. Normally explorer would open up and I would
have access to my start menu folders.

I still get the context menu with the choices, I just cannot get a response when
selecting to explore a particular folder. Other than that, regular items in the Start
menu work just fine and I can start programs as normal. Other context menu commands
like delete, rename, sort by name and properties work fine.

I think that there is something corrupt in the registry where the shell for the context
menu or the start menu folders is kept (I am not sure though).

I don't think this is a spyware/malware or virus problem as the PC is regularly scanned with SuperAntiSpyware and Avira Antivir. Resident protections that I have enabled are Avira Antivir and Comodo BOClean.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP3, automatic updates enabled (this problem has happened even before I have installed SP3). I am using an administrator account.

Preferred Solution: Cannot open folders in Start Menu by doubleclicking or rightclick-> Open or Explore

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello & welcome to TSF ,

are you able to use the run fuction ?

if you are then do this

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

Have a new laptop with XP media centre addition on it. I like my folders to open in explore view and not search view. I have applied settings to all folders from tools, folders option and I have tried the registry fix from your tweak guide, but to no avail. Everytime I restart the Pc it has gone back to 'search' on double clicking a folder. I have to right click and chose 'explore'.
This is driving me mad. Please help?

A:Getting Folders To Open In 'explore' Not 'search' View

First I'd try a free, online scan here: http://safety.live.com/ In addition to scanning for malware, it'll clean your registry and a bunch of other stuff. Then presuming that you've set all the settings correctly (I generally try each suggested fix a couple of times - that way I'm sure that I didn't miss type/click something) - I'd suggest that you try running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog. Here's a mini-guide on it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/Once that's done, try resetting the settings and see if they'll "stick" for you then.

Hi.

Im new to this forum, so please feel free to comment on anything in my post.

As stated in my title, a new problem has occured today. To clarify what could be the problem, I will write what I have done today, with my pc.

I just started working with setting up mail client on my NAS server, and was working with portforwarding of my router.

At the same time, I updated my windows 7 (autoupdate) and after a reboot, the problem occured.
I can boubleclick on folders on my desktop, but when I enter the "folder surfing" (old pathfinder) I can't doubleclick, I get the following error

(in Danish)
"Denne fil har ikke tilknyttet program, der kan udf?re handlingen. Installer et program, eller hvis et program allerede er installeret, skal du oprette en tilknytning i Standardprogrammer i Kontrolpanel"

(translated by me to english)
"This file has no program associated with it that can perform the action. Install a program, or if a program is already installed, you must create an association in Default Programs in Controlpanel"

I have been to the Controlpanel to look at the options, but nowhere could I find the option to change the program needed for doubleclicking on folders.
All other files still react normally when I doubleclick on the files - only folders are the problem.

"Rightclick -> open" still works, so I am able to open the folders, but not by doubleclicking, which is realy annoying.

Any help would be apric... Read more

Hi to all whoever can help me

I have a weird problem due to opening some folders through right-click context menu from Start Menu. For example, if I try to open Startup folder from the start menu via "Right Click >> Open or Open All Users or Explore or Explore All Users", the folder window where it should pop-up, it's not happening.

What it did to my computer after I choose one of the command, it refreshed my desktop and restart my explorer.exe process.

I ask my friend who use Win7 as well but he does not have this problem. I know this is not some kind of major problem that makes my comp not running properly, but it just makes me curious why I have the problem.

Cheers.

Upgrades have been known to cause issues with certain registry setting etc. Also, some more info on your system specs would be ideal (just click User CP at the top of the page then click User Specs).

Can someone please help me?

First of all I have a compac laptop running win98

A few days ago all of the shortcut files icons change into a generic windows icon and the .lnk extension appeared and the shortcuts would not work. I tried scanreg /fix and scanreg /restore and the problem didn't go away. Finally I used fixlnk and the problem went away and everything seemed great.

A couple of days later the problem returned and I tried scanreg /fix and scanreg /restore again, but they didn't work. I tried fixlnk again and when I rebooted the shortcuts worked, but then the start menu would not open and i could not open any files on the desktop (my computer, recycle bin,...etc.). Also the fonts on the desktop changed and when I tried to change them in the desktop properties menu I only had a few fonts. sometimes when I reboot I can access the start menu, but I have to right click and select open. my quick launch icons don't appear when i boot up, but i can make them appear and they are the only way I can access anything. I am going to try copying the fonts from another computer because it make some things hard to read.

If anyone can please help that would be great.

Thanks

I noticed Napster running in there. You're running a risk right there when it comes to malware. I also saw a couple of programs in there which look suspicious to me.

Although I can't assist in HJT logs or malware removal, I must recommend that you have it moved to the Security forum.

In the top-right corner of your message is a red triangle with an exclamation mark: Report Post to Moderators. Ask them politely if they can move your post to the Security forum. You'll more likely (and more quickly) get a response.

This is a very trivial question I realize but yesterday when I hovered my mouse cursor over the Windows 7 Start orb, I could have sworn that the start menu automatically opened up without clicking on it. Maybe I'm just losing my mind, but I could have sworn it did. The reason I'm curious about this is because right now it's not appearing when I hover my mouse cursor over the orb. Does anyone know the default on this? I did some research and even thought I saw something about a setting for the Start Orb...(off, hover and on), though I don't know where that would be.

Last night, I activated McAfee on my new T450s.  This morning, when I turned on my PC, I found that it took a long time to log in (30-40 seconds vs. the typcal 5-10) and afterward, the strart menu would not open.  I'm still having this problem. It also seems that executing some commands takes ages!  win-E to open Explorer takes 30-40 seconds, and clicking on the Action Center icon in the task bar doesn't do anything--though it says there are notifications.  Alternatively, right-clicking it and selecting "Open Action Center" doesn't do anything either. I've tried running a sfc /scannow and various other powershell commands I've found (and tried restarting after each), but have had no luck.  I also did a full re-install of Windows using the Media Creation Tool, and still no luck. Other than wiping everything and reinstalling Windows (and all my SW from scratch), I'm not sure what else I can do, but would love suggestions before I take that last and final step.

Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. A:Unable to open ANYTHING in my start menu

Can't think of anything to help your current situation, perhaps someone else can. Here's a word of advice though. Look into Acronis TrueImage to prevent this happening again for you. System Restore is good, but what you really need is something that can restore your system in case of a disaster such as you are experiencing or such as a hard drive crash.

True Image can totally back up your computer, creating a complete image in any of the following places: Second hard drive, CD-R media, DVD media, (you need to be sure you have compatible CD/DVD burner and packet writing software such as Nero InCD or others) even (I understand) such devices as USB external drives. It can even create a hidden partition on a second hard drive invisible to other users. A good size for a second hard drive would be at least 80 GB if you didn't have a lot of large media files.

I have used this software to completely restore my system several times after mishaps. It's pretty easy to use once you get used to it with an intuitive interface.

Norton Ghost is another program that will do the same thing, however I have no experience with it.

Just a suggestion
Marty

First of all. when I start up my computer, the first thing I notice is that I can not click on the start menu to open it. I even tried right clicking, and it's like my right clicking is disabled. I can't right click on anything as a matter of fact, and it's extremely frustrating. No programs are clickable on my desk top, and I keep getting this never ending loading circle on everything my mouse hovers over. The only reason I was able to get on Firefox is because my Windows Live Messenger starts automatically, and I had a friend link me here for tech support. My computer was working fine last night and was running great. I am honestly not sure what happened, and somehow my firewall and antivirus protection got turned off recently. The thing that is really frustrating is I cannot run any scans or turn my virus protection back on, because I cannot open it. I even tried ctrl + alt + delete to open Windows Task Manager, and it opens, but when I try doing anything in the task manager, the annoying never ending loading circle appears again.. I will leave my computer on for hours and eventually I just shut it off. Any help is greatly appreciated. I use Vista btw.

Hi! im unable to open my documents from the start menu nor can i open my computer i get the following error message (This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel) plz help thx in advance :)

A:Can't open my documents from start menu

Hi

You can look at this site of dougknox
I think you are looking for the LNK (and maybe try CPL and EXE) fixes.
Just download them, unzip them, run them and when asked if you want to import it into the registry say yes.

You should make a system restore point before doing this by going to
Start -> Run -> type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
When System Restore is open choose Create a Restore Point -> Next -> Enter a Description and click Create.

Hi, everyone. So this issue just started happening today. I am currently on the anniversary build and when I search for a program in the start menu and try to open it, it won't open. Things like run, Chrome, etc. all won't open. Basic windows apps such as the calculator seem to open just fine along with "check for updates" etc. I've tried sfc /scannow with no luck, running a malware scan, and everything is fine. For some reason my desktop notifications have also stopped working as well. I tried restarting my computer, but this hasn't worked either.

I tried booting into clean boot and safe mode as well, but it is still broken. When I created a new user account to test if it was working, I could use the start menu just fine and I was receiving notifications. On my main account it is still broken. I noticed that another person was having almost the same issue in this thread Programs Won't Open in Seach/Start Menu - Windows 10 Forums However, a restart doesn't work for me and it doesn't seem to happen on a timed interval. Is this a known issue with the current update? Thanks for the help in advance.

A:Can't open programs from the start menu

Okay, well something weird just happened. Right after I posted this thread, I saw a flood of recently added items going through my start menu. I started opening programs that I couldn't run from the start menu before and all of a sudden everything was working fine again. Even the notifications started working properly as well. This is a very odd bug and it seemed to fix itself without a system restart. Hopefully this isn't a reoccurring issue. It would be nice if someone could report if this is a known issue though.

I have Windows 7 -

When I try to open a folder in opens on the task bar but not no window opens.
Any suggestions?

A:Folders open in on start bar but no window appears.

Hello Dave, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The folder window (Windows Explorer) may be offscreen. You might see if you may be able to use the tutorial below to get it back onscreen to the desktop if that it the case.

Hope this helps,

Last night around 2am (4/5/08) my Vista decided to install a few updates and reboot itself. Upon booting back up, I was severely dismayed to discover that my start menu refuses to open, and at least one other (seemingly random, and non-Windows) file had been deleted.

The start menu issue seems to be the most pressing problem, anybody have any ideas?

I attempted a system restore, which was successful, restoring back to 4/3/08, but the issue persists. It very well may have been a corrupted update file, but I'm not sure of how I would verify that or remedy it.

A:Start menu refuses to open, other various issues...

I've also noticed that, although I can explore the start menu through a simple right-click, none of my programs are showing up under the "programs" folder. I have the standard Accessories, Administrative Tools, Maintenance, and Startup, but none of the other options I would otherwise be expecting.

I just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.

I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.

I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.

A:How do I get start menu to open on secondary monitor?

Hello bs2100, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have the Show Start on the display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key box checked. With that box checked, when your press the , your Start screen should open on the same display it was last closed on.

Hope this helps,

My daughter handed me the computer this morning saying, "sorry mom, I just tried to jailbreak my iPod". Ugh!

when I click start menu, nothing happens..doesnot open. All but 3 of my dsk top icons are gone. (Malwarbytes, Firefox, and the trash can). Tried malwarebytes but it doesn't finish scanning. Firefox gives me this message " Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system". When I right click the computer screen I just get a small rectangle box with some arrows.
If I try to ctrl alt delete I just get a blue screen. It seems like all words have disappeared from my computer.
I have screen shots of these things because they are hard to explain but I don't know how or if I can post pictures here.

Please help.

Hi,

I used to be able to go to Start, My Favorites; click on something; and it would open into a new window. Then, a moron from eBay told me to change a bunch of things, and I can't remember what the idiot made me change (because I thought the brainless idiot knew what he was doing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

It crashes and I receive the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error.
It started ever since I upgraded my antivirus (Bitdefender). So I reverted back to the older version, and I still keep receiving the same error and it's just annoying!
Can anyone pinpoint the problem and tell me what I should do? I've tried discussing this with Microsoft and a couple other forum sites, and so far, no one has been able to help me.

Ran into a small problem after upgrading to the Anniversary Update. The update fixed a lot of my problems after I did a clean install so that was very good. I just have one small issue but after that's fixed I should be perfect.

The only problem I'm having now is when I search for programs like Control Panel, it shows up but when I go and click on it, it won't open. When I hover over it, it turns gray (like it should) but besides that, nothing happens.

Recent items seems to work and so does web portion of it.

What's also weird is some programs like Steam allows you to right click on that and go to a certain game (its like a shortcut). That works but left clicking it doesn't.
The start menu is pretty much the same story. In the list of programs that were installed, I can't open any of them. If I click on Calculator a small thin bar appears below it that's filled partially. Other then that, nothing else happens.

I was looking around the forums and I saw that some people created new user accounts to see if was happening to just one account. I was unable to create an account in control panel (clicking on Add a new user... in CP didn't work) so I opened up Run and ran netplwiz which allowed me to access the account page and add a new user in. I added a new user with Admin privileges.

I switched over to the new account and everything was working there. Searches were working, programs could be selected from the search area and in the start menu list, everything was pre... Read more

Hi,
I am using Windows Vista Ultimate x86 on a Dell Optiplex PC. I have a strange request here, but I hope there is a way to fix it. I do remember when Vista was coming out, I was hearing that the Start menu will have a feature that displays recently opened programs. When I ended up getting Vista though, I noticed that in the Start menu, there was a list of everyday apps already in there before I opened anything, but when I do open apps though, the orientation changes. But I myself happen to like the orientation it comes with, so, ever since I got Vista, I have been going crazy attempting to keep the Start menu in that orientation, and it has just become a habit. But is there any way to make it stay the way it is? I have heard that if you open Taskbar properties, then click Start menu, and uncheck show a list of recently opened apps, it would do what I wanted. But no, when I did it, it just removed them all! I had to open them all back in the right order to get them back! So what I am saying is that I don't want it to rearrange anything as I open apps, and just keep the same orientation. So basically, I just want this feature disabled, and make it just a convenient list of everyday apps. Is there any regedit, group policy editor, or any trick for this? Please help! I have been driven nuts over the past few years since I got Vista!

A:Start menu rearranging after I open other apps. No!

I don't have Vista but this works for 7 so I am assuming it works for Vista too. Right click each of your above programs and select Pin to Start Menu. Left click and drag to arrange them in the order of your preference. After arranging the the programs right click in the recent menu list and select Properties. Under the Start Menu tab uncheck the box next to Store and display recently opened programs if you only want to see your pinned programs.

Vista end of life arrived in April of this year and Security Updates are no longer offered by Microsoft. I would advise against doing any banking or internet purchases on the computer. There is a BC thread showing how to use Windows Server updates for Vista but this is not supported by Microsoft.

I know that this it very minor, but it's just an annoyance to me. A while back, I think before I was using IE8, I would click on the e-mail link (set to WLM) from Vista's start menu and it would just open up a new tab if an IE window was already open. But now it just opens in a new window regardless if an IE window is already open or not. I'm using Windows Vista 64-bit with IE8 and IE7Pro as an add-on. Here is the start menu e-mail link code from the registry if it helps:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Hotmail\shell\open\command:
%systemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\hmmapi.dll",OpenInboxHandler

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Few days ago i notice that I cant open any folder on my computer. Pressing twice on any folder was opening search option, and when i found there what i wanted to open a window appeard ,choose the program you want to use to open this file.
on the internet I found something like that

If you double-click a drive or folder, Search Companion may start and the drive or folder may not open. 'Search' will be the top most in the right-click context menu for a folder or drive. This usually happens after adding/modifying the File Folder or Drive entries via the Folder Options File Types dialog, as an attempt to add additional context menu items such as Command Prompt here, Print Directory for folders or drives.Quick fix

Click Start, Run and type this command:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

I did that and all folders from deskop open noe properly, but when i clik on my document, my picture, my recent documents, my music, my computer, control panel from start menu message appears

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I did a system restore and for a few minutes everything worked right, and everything started again. so again i did this Click Start, Run and type this command:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

but still cant open folders from menu start.

can anyone help solve me this problem? is there anything wrong with compputer or maybe i have a virus?

leyla76, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it or right click it and choose "merge" and answer yes to the import prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

Note: If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the reg file fix onto a CD, thumb drive, or floppy and transfer the file to the problem computer.

After that .reg file is merged into the registry successfully restart your computer.
