Only able to open one browser window at a time..cntrl-n opens page in same window

Q: Only able to open one browser window at a time..cntrl-n opens page in same window

I used to be able to hit cntrl-n and open multiple windows, but now, it opens in the same window. I was pretty sure there was an option in internet tools to change this setting, but cannot find it. Can someone please help me?

I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Only able to open one browser window at a time..cntrl-n opens page in same window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,
I've been searching a lot, trying to find a solution to this problem, but no solution.
The problem is that, when I open a folder, explorer will allways open a new window, and I end up with lots of windows, which becomes really annoying.
Also, nothing happens when I change folders options to "open each folder in the same window". I checked it, unckecked it, checked it, restarted the computer, stopped the explorer process at the task manager, nothing worked.

This is really annoying. Please help.

i couldnt think of how to describe it for the title easily and I am about to go home to maybe tomorrow I will work it out.

My Vista box is currently demonstrating curious behaviour. When I open IE7 I select a favorite and it opens a new window with that favorite in it. If I do a search with my default provider in the original window, the search results appear in a new tab in the second window.

The second window does not display this behaviour. It works normally with my standard settings - open favorites in the current tab.

Again, favorites chosen in the first window continue to appear in the second window. Search results too.

Running IE7 in safe mode stops this behaviour but I have not installed any new software and I have removed all my temporary internet files/addon settings etc.

Any ideas would be great. Funny old game eh

Whenever I open a new browser window and on the odd occasion when I'm surfing (usually when I move to another site) I get it too.
The pop is just advertising, including ebay.com.au, 888.com, other online gambling and dating services.

Have run four different anti-spyware programs in safe mode with system restore disabled:
- adaware
- Spyware doctor
- XoftspySE
- AVG anti-spyware

Cleaned whatever it found.
With respect to antivirus, installed and cleaned HDD with:
- Norton AV
- McAfee AV
- NOD32 AV

While it did reduce the number of pop ups i was getting before hand, there is evidently a virus or spyware/malware that they all are missing.

HJT attached. ANy help appreciated.

Whenever I start up the computer and turn on Mozilla, after a few minutes IE opens a window saying that it is unable to open the window "Favorit". It doesn't conect to the internet, even though it should be able to. This happened before and after I installed IE 8. I've run Symantec Virus Scan with 0 results. I've posted this before, but nobody has been able to fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Using Internet Explorer 7.0 - I use a website that has links that open up into a new window, and a Quicktime video comes up... I'm using a lap top that I've had for almost a year, but haven't used online much... anyway, when I click on the link, a new window opens, and the video begins to play.... but the original window also changes to the video, so they are BOTH playing, at the same time. How can I change it so that the new window opens and plays the video, but the original window stays on the page where the original link was selected?
Additional Details
I've been going to the site using both Firefox and IE7 on THIS computer with no problem, but the problem is with the OTHER laptop... The site is lynda.com - but for the above reason, I don't think it's a problem with their site. Where, on IE7, can I find "preferences"? Is there such a thing?

Since I have to use IE as well as FF I want IE to perform as much like FF as possible. I've set most things to do what I want but when I only have my Home Page open I want a search page to open in a new tab. It doesn't, it takes over my Home Page. Yet links from the search page will open in new tabs. I want to keep my Home Page as it is and open any new pages in a separate tab. The only way I've found to do this is by opening a blank tab first.
Can anyone explain how to do this please?

I downloaded "Smart Popup Killer" and every since then everytime I click a link that has to open in a new window or a popup comes up, my internet freezes. I've tried deleting the program, still didn't fix it. Is there some kind of corruption in a file somewhere? Can someone please help me out?!

A:Internet Freezes when I click a page that opens in a new window

I'm not familiar with the program, but usually a program will have an 'uninstall' file which is reached through the AddRemove Programs in Control Panel. If you just delete a program, some files are left in your system.

Try to install the program again; then go through proper avenue to uninstall (not delete). If nothing is shown in AddRemove Programs, look in the Popup file for a file labeled 'unwise' or 'uninstall'

Hello,

I am running Windows XP on a machine at home and was previously using IE. I started getting frequent (about 3-5 an hour) pop-up browsers...usually a :blank page. I ran Spy-Bot and Adware and found several issues which were corrected.

I installed Mozilla and set as the default browser in hopes this would end the problem. No luck. I'm still getting the pop-up browsers from IE in Mozilla.

At start up of my win xp laptop I get a "window" open and then close. The window is very small, but if I hover over the place it appears on startup with my mouse it appears somewhere else, so I am unable to click on the window. Its difficult to tell but I would say my boot time has increased and that it is running slower. This is noticeable on the speed of my php programming environment. The debugger is getting painfully slow at times.

I have attempted to track down the problem with several programs: Malwarebytes, Super Anti Sptware, aswMBR, and others, this last one appears to have highlighted a .sys file that changes its name every time I run the program after a reboot. Its a variation of sp??.sys were ? is the variable letter; in the example from the log below it's spgf.sys.

Recently, I discovered that when connected to the internet via Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, the following phenomenon plagues my computer.

Upon visiting an internet site, as you know, a window pane on the task bar encapsulates or describes the site. (For example, as I write this, the task bar's window pane below reads "BleepingComput".)

Each time I connect to a site-- any site-- and linger there, a second pane sporadically and spontaneously appears and then quickly disappears. It's difficult to detect because no new window accompanies the window pane and because it disappears so quickly. Furthermore, this phantom second pane doesn't contain any text. Although it's approximately the same size as the ordinary window pane, only a small white square, approximately a third of the pane's size, identifies it.

The secondary pane suggests some trojan's partially thwarted effort to establish a full, complete connection to a site and to open the accompanying window. Alternatively, it suggests some spyware recording my internet history.

I attach the requisite logs below. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

While surfing web sites, I often will select from lists (for example on cars.com, I can pick several different types of cars to look for). To do this, I USED to use the CTRL key to pick and choose several items from a list by holding down CTRL and clicking on the selection.

HOWEVER, now, my computer has decided that holding down CTRL and left-clicking the mouse opens up a brand-new browser window and does not select anything from the list.

Anyone else having this issue? It is driving me crazy.

Hi.. I really hope someone can help me with this annoying problem!

On a webpage, I have a link coded like this: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>

Just your normal standard link to open up your mail client (in my case it is Windows Mail).

In windows XP & IE6, clicking on a link like this would work properly.

However now that I am on Vista & IE7, when I click on this kind of "mailto" link, although it does open up my default mail client... it also opens up another browser window, which displays an error: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with a URL of: "mailto:[email protected]"

If I try clicking on the same link in a Firefox browser.. there is no problem.

It appears that IE7 and mailto don't want to play nicely together! (While I was researching this problem, I read somewhere that it might have to do with "trusted sites".. but not sure!)

Can someone give me a solution to stop the additional IE7 browser window being created? Most of the time it sits on top of the eMail window, so you are unsure of where the eMail went.. which can be very confusing.. in addition to not being able to find the original window you were viewing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
SunnyOz

A:IE7 & mailto links & new browser window opens with error

Hello SunnyOz, and welcome to Vista Forums.

That is strange. I'm not sure why IE7 would try to open it as well when Windows Mail had opened with it as it should.

Double check to make sure that Internet Explorer and Windows Mail are set as the default program with all of their associations set to them as well to see if there may be something not set with them.

Do you have problems with any other mailto links opening like this? If not, then it may be a problem with that link from that website.

Hello,
I am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window.

Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things.

Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.

Now I have no clue what to do! If anyone can help I would appreciate it! either a way to disable kaspersky so i can try a restore or another idea for getting my mouse to work as i really do not want to reformat..

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Seven Forums! inlalaland

First when not able to run the System Restore feature while in Windows the fast alternative is simply booting up from the 7 dvd if you have one and going into the repair tools where the options for using the feature is there along with restoring a full system image backup. You simply use a restore point while booted live from disk.

If you don't have a 7 dvd to boot from the option to burn a repair cd is found in the Control Panel>Backup & Restore section or available at Neosmart Technologies. Windows 7 Repair and Recovery CD Download | The NeoSmart Files

There you would still need to see the disk image burned to a blank cd-r first in order to boot from the new cd. The other tool besides the System File Checker you can try would be the Disk Check tool you can schedule to run from a command prompt since you likely wouldn't be able to right click on the C drive icon to bring up properties>Tools and click on the Check now button under Error checking.

Typing "chkdsk /r" and pressing enter should see a message asking to schedule it for the next startup you answer with a Y for yes or N for no. This can help with any errors on the drive to help to some extent getting Windows to run normally. If the problems however are too severe the option to see a Repair Install or performing a full Clean Install (last resort) would have to be considered.

Earlier I thought it was a problem with Google Chrome browser, but it has affected the Firefox too. I have Bit defender installed but still something has got installed in my system.

The problem is:
Google chrome opens multiple tabs and closes few tabs and opens again multiple tabs automatically. The sites which are opened are links within the main site I was browsing. The same behavior is seen in Google Chrome and Firefox. I have not checked with IE yet. But its too much irritating to work with.

It seems to me like some browser hijack has taken place. I am posting my logs here. Kindly get through the same and find me a solution.

Thanks,
Abhilash.

I use the following html and javascript in an <A> onclick() handler to always open a new window.
<A onclick="OpenMyWin()" target="MyWin" href="(url to htm page)">My Win Link</A>
where the OpenMyWin() function uses window.open():
function OpenMyWin(){
var  myWin= open("", "MyWin", "width=990,height=350,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes" );
myWin.focus();
}
I tried using the url instead of "" for the open(), but then it always opens only in a tab.
I've tried the various IE Tabs options.
This works on some systems (Win7, WS2008R2), but on a new install of WS2008R2 and WS2012R2 it always brings up both when I click the anchor link.
The doctype for the page is <!DOCTYPE html>
What I want to happen is that the link opens in the window where about:blank is opening, (and with the content displayed and not blank), and not in the tab. Instead I'm getting a blank new window AND the content in a new Tab.
Is this a problem with IE or the html/javascript ?

Sometimes, unpredictably, when using the PC (Windows XP Pro, AMD Duron 700 MHz, 192 MB RAM) for a half hour or so, and working in an open window (could be IE6, Outlook Express, Word 2002, or any application) a dialog box will open *behind* (in back of) rather than in front of the currently open window. I don't mean a pop-up window, but a legitimate dialog box spawned by the current app. This situation makes it impossible to move, close, or otherwise work in the current window, which has lost focus to the dialog box behind it. Since I can't see the dialog box, I can't know what to do with it. The only thing I have found I can do at this point is to press the ESC key to close the dialog box, resize the open window to about 1/4 of the screen, and do the operation again. Then I can see the dialog box, drag it into full view, and complete the necessary operation. Rebooting solves the problem for a while, but then it starts again. No error messages ever appear.
If I were using Windows 98 or ME I would guess that I was running out of "handles" or resources, but this is Windows XP, which is not supposed to suffer from that kind of problem.
Can anybody help figure out what is causing this and what can be done to prevent it? Thanks!

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.

I have a feeling I may have done this to myself when I was trying to get rid of the spyware (or whatever it was) before I sucked it up and spent half my rent money on a new subscription to Norton...

When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.

I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions &... Read more

Try spybot s&d and adaware to make sure that you have no malware programs running. You can go to google and search for the programs.

You can also do a repair on ie 6 from control panel--> add/remove programs--> Select Microsoft IE and click remove, then select the repair tab.

I am running IE 6 with SP1 on a Win2000 machine.

When I am using the browser, it won't let me open more than one window at a time; if a new one opens then it closes the previous one. This is especially annoying when a pop-up window opens!!!

I have tried reinstalling IE, adding the latest Service Packs, removing IE6 and reverting to IE5 but nothing works.

I have also tried several pop-up stopper programs but they just add to the problem as they often don't let me open IE at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello! My question is probably really simple to answer, but I'm wondering how people have more than one window open at a time? For example, right now I have four sites that I'm tabbing back and fourth between, but isn't there a way to have the windows open, say side-by-side? Can't I be watching Twitter, for example, at the same time that I'm typing this message on Bleeping Computer without having to go to the top of the screen and click to go to the other page? When I use the minimize feature, it takes the whole page away until I click to maximize it again, so I can't figure it out. Thanks for the help, and happy Friday!!!Michele

A:more than one window open at a time?

What browser are you using? I know for a fact that both Google Chrome and Safari can pull their tabs into other windows. You can do it, and you just size it up, and place it in a square shape for 4 windows.

I'm pretty sure you can do that in Firefox.

Hi Everyone. I am not a techie, so please go easy on me. I am running IE 6 on Windows XP home edition. The problem is, when I try to open a new window in the browser, it closes the original window. This happens when I click a link that opens a new browser or even if I right click a link and ask that it opens in a new browser. I just closes the originally open browser. I have tried to disable pop-up blocking, but haven't had any joy. Any suggestions?

A:IE 6 won't open more than one window at a time
