Piriform - some files are locked; and new software announce

Q: Piriform - some files are locked; and new software announce

Piriform Defraggler.

On System drive C, some files are deeply locked and could NOT be defragmented and / or touched in any case.

What should I do?

...might be because of Steam or anti-virus (Steam locks something on machine to identify it).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and Welcome.

A Reminder....

As seen in Post #2 of our sticky topic 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS Read this Before Posting For Malware Removal Help'

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix

A:Has anyone used the Piriform CCleaner

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:• Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.• Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to... C Cleaner should not remove e-mails / contact anything like that. C Cleaner is a program used to removed temp files such as internet history, cache, etc. Its a great program and i highly recommend it. As far as the issue you are having, it may be related to a different issue. What e-mail do you have / are you referring too? AOL, g mail, yahoo, exchange? And do you have it set up on Outlook? CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool that removes unused, temporary and junk files from your system to include temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, etc. Use of the cleaning feature is recommended to delete such files in order to help speed up the scans performed by anti-malware scanning tools. Is anyone using this with win 8/8.1?

I used this program all the time with XP, I liked it better than standard windows defragmenter. I just downloaded it and had it analyze my drives - while windows defragment and optimize disks tells me my disks are 0% fragmented, Defraggler gives wildly different values - my SSD is 33% fragmented, and HDD is 19%.

Now, I know that SSDs don't really need to be defragmented, but I am surprised to find that my hard drive was fragmented that much. Are these values real? or is Piriform's software crap?

I haven't actually defragmented with this yet, I want to make sure it won't do more harm than good.

A:is Piriform's Defraggler ok to use with 8.1?

I have used it ones, but it didn't work at all. It made my HDD slower from 9% fragmented to 34% fragmented. (I fixed this issue with the BitDefender defragmenter)

What's in your computer? If you're like most of us, you can probably name the processor (Intel or AMD, Celeron or Pentium), maybe how much RAM it has, and maybe how big the hard drive is.
When you go to a computer store and see all the bright shiny PCs laid out next to each other, most will have tags or stickers indicating the:
Processor brand and model
Hard drive size and speed
Amount of memory (RAM)
Graphics card
Operating system
Two or three years later, when it comes time to upgrade your computer, that tag or sticker may be long gone. Speccy was designed as a free electronic "what's inside" sticker for your PC.

I contacted Piriform about adding the NTUninstall feature to CCleaner again.
Below is a copy of our emails.

If some more people would request this feature either in CCleaner or as a stand alone utility, maybe Piriform would provide it.

Your request (#78540) has been updated.
You can add a comment by replying to this email.

Megan Sparks, Jun 23 14:30:Hi David,
Thanks for getting back with me.
Including the cleaning option with a warning message to notify users of the potential hazards and/or a stand-alone feature/utility would be very useful so I'll also forward this to our team for further review and consideration.
We've had several other users request the same feature so its very possible that $NtUninstall will be re-included in the future.
Please don't hesitate to email me back if you have any questions or concerns.
Regards
Megan

David Bailey, Jun 23 13:43:Hello,
Thanks for responding.
You could include a strong message about the hazards of removing them.
Some computer users really don't know what they are doing.
Back when the option was available, I waited a couple of weeks after
updating to see if an update caused problems or not before removing the
NTuninstalls.
It freed up some space.
A thought--- Maybe a stand alone utility ?

Next, click Advanced, then uncheck "Enable Active Monitoring".

Before I go further, I would like to know if the freeware version is supposed to be able to recover lost files. The Piriform website doesn't answer this.

Thanks in advance.

A:Freeware Recuva (from Piriform)

Hi GeoS, The answer to your question is yes. Recuva functions only one way and should be able to recover files unless they are too degraded. The sole difference between the free version and the paid version is the paid version provides you with technical support from Piriform. They do have a forum there where you can also ask questions about problems you might be having with any of their software products. Although, I use all of Piriform's products, I can't really explain why you are getting the error message you stated, unless there is perhaps a corrupted file within the Recuva program itself. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable here will be able to answer that question for you.

While uninstalling some (what I believed to be) unnecessary programs, I noticed upon a restart that I had lost the NVIDIA audio control center icon from among my startup program icons on the taskbar. Not really knowing what I was doing, I inadvertently and carelessly installed an NVIDIA driver that turned out to be apparently a video driver because my display resolution deteriorated considerably.

In an attempt to correct that error I did a system restore, but that didn't work, so I tried to reset my screen resolution via the control panel/display/settings. I started by selecting the max resolution and planned on working backwards to get the optimum setting, but after I hit the apply button I got a blank screen except for a small window in the center of the screen which had a top line saying, Self Diagnostics. The middle line of text said, "Nonsupport mode, and the last line reads, "Check signal cable".

Here's the problem.......I'm frozen with that screen and can't escape from it. I tried both normal and safe mode restarts, but both resulted with this same screen (after the display showed the Windows logo and loading process indicator that it normally does). I then borrowed another monitor from a neighbor and got essentially the same result except that the message this time said, "Analog (signal) input....."Cannot display this mode."[SIZE].......analog signal?....where did that come from and how do you change it?

My first question... Read more

A:Display screen locked out by software issue

Is the text oversized due to vision issues?

In the Safe Mode screen, try both the "Use Last Known Good Configuation" and "Enable VGA Mode". If that fails, boot to some kind of Windows disk (it doesn't have to be XP, and enter Recovery Console so that you can run the following:

"chkdsk c: /r"

which will run an exhaustive check of the hard drive. It might take 20 minutes to 4 hours, depending.

Is the video card onboard, or add-on?
Post specs of the power supply (make, model & rated wattage output).
Can you boot to BIOS and view the monitor normally (white text on blue/black background)? Enter BIOS by tapping either the "del" or "F8" key immediately after power-on. (The key may vary depending on the computer.)

So I have the MyBook essential ver 2.0, and it came with WD SmartWare and the option to lock the drive with a password.

I set the password a few times but it seemed buggy and never worked.

I reboot the drive now, and suddenly it's locked, and it's asking for my password. I think "okay no biggie" and type in my password.

It's the wrong one.

I try more combinations. None of them work. The only way I can use my external hard drive again is to wipe it and all the data on it. That is not an option since I already have files on it that I don't want to lose.

I do not know why this suddenly happened and I'm coming here even though I already know my chances are slim to none I'll be able to fix this easily.

Western Digital says that if you "forget" (In my case the password software was screwy so it probably set my password wrong) Western Digital cannot retrieve your password and you must wipe your drive to use it.

Does anybody know if it's possible to crack the password somehow, someway?

This is not to be mean spirited, but we can not confirm that the password was not set by someone else and the person(s) requesting assistance is indeed the owner of the System/Drive that is password protected. I want to wipe off the hard drive assuming that will wipe of the security system that has locked up my hard drive. HOW do i do that? I'd like to wipe the HD and reuse it and then properly install the security software.
I read about dban but that would mean I could "see" the prompts and the wizard. All I can see is the page that asks for my password.

Although this vista 32bit system has been running with no issues, I have been notified of a single hidden file after an avira scan, which is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DbgagD\1

Its properties cannot be changed, and its key itself cannot be viewed, edited or deleted with my admin account, running regedit "as administrator". I dont know what the entry is used for and if it is safe. When I click on its "1" property, I get "an error is preventing this key being opened:the system cannot find the file specified". I have malwarebytes, spywareblaster and trend micro installed, along with my main comodo firewall, and avira antivirus. They do not conflict. With an updated malwarebytes, and kaspersky tdsskiller, I have had no suspicious files listed after a scan (the latter on its default settings). Only avira shows the registry key as hidden. This is now my second attempt at the Gmer rootkit scanner. The first time it gave me a blue screen with "kxldipoc.sys - page fault in nonpaged area". Perhaps this was due to Defogger not disabling the cd emulation properly-is that likely?

I have browsed the net and found DbgagD listed in the registry on other machines (often with their own virus related issues-not always a good sign), showing as [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DbgagD\1*] with content similar to "value"="?\06\01\1b\065&#... Read more

Hi and There is no information as to the source of that entry. We can however make it visible for you.Lets try Combofix. Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Hello

Firstly thank you for this great forum, to everyone who is actively involved - thank you.

Operating system windows 7 64bit

Having spent best part of 2 days tyring to sort this out.

I was hit by the West Yorkshire Police Virus,- Ransomware 2 days ago on 14 May 2012. My monitor kept switching on and off, I then switched it off as it was froze completely

Since then
1. My system restore points have been deleted, so can not go back.
2. Keep getting error messages that say access may be limited although I have Administrator accounts. Can not access My Computer or Cpanel or anything at all on few of my windows user accounts, Some user accounts I can access these files and folders. Although they work fine in Safe mode for the same user account.
3. All my bookmarks and faviroutes have been deleted.
4. Every single file on my computer and harddrives have been locked for example
locked-535437.jpg.bzil.

I have tried the following so far:
1. Ran combo-fix
2. Ran Malwarebytes
3. Ran AVG
4. Ran Kaspersky windows unlocker from disk. The Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker utility to fight ransom malware
5. Ran TDSSKiller.exe
6. Ran SuperAntiSpyware Portable Scanner
7. Ran Prevx
They all detected alot of Malware Viruses and claimed to have deleted and cleaned them, which maybe the case. However no matter what I have tried I can not open any of my files whatsoever. Ther... Read more

NOTE: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed.
There shouldn't be any scheduled antivirus scans running while the scan is being performed.
Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double click on the DDS icon and allow it to run.A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.Notepad will open with the results.Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.

Hey, I'm new here as you can see
But I've got a problem which has been irritating me for a the past few days.

The problem is hard to describe.
When I try moving a file in my D: drive, it would become 'locked'. If the file is a picture, and I move it into another folder, I'd try opening it but it would say "No preivew available."

I made a photoshop project, then tried moving into a folder. I tried opening it after, but it said,

"Could not complete your request because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in Windows Explorer to unlock the file."

I don't quite get what that means.

Another thing, after I've move a file to another folder, I can't delete, move, or rename it. It says,

"Cannot delete [filename]: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I am quite sure that the file is not in use.

I don't know what to do about this, so I've come here for your help

Thanks in advance.

I am writing on behalf of my wife who has a W 8.1 laptop.
This is what I believe is the scenario.

On opening a picture that she had taken herself a message was received from AVG Security saying something to do with blocking. Picture opened OK but cannot be saved after changes were made. Message received:

Could not save as C: xxx because file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows Explorer to Unlock the File. There does not seem to be any way of doing this. There is Unlock button.

This applies to any file in her Pictures folder but Documents works OK.

Kind regards,
Fixby

I should have said 'There is NO Unlock button

I'v been here multiple times and you guys always help me when i need it but i have been searching for the solution for a while and still not success

when i built a new comp i hooked up my harddrives and had access to some files but not all and made due with what i had and would eventually come back to figure out why im locked out of my files.

Yes. i have gone to the take ownership thread and did that and it seemed like it did something but i still have the padlock over alot of folders and can access alot files if i try to play a video it says that there is an error and cant play (gives file path) and thats all.

if there is a .rar file it cant open due to no permissions (did take ownership on the .rar and nothing happend) its only on the one harddive and idk why the other one is fine

the thing is is that i have messed with the security settings a bit and say my video folder i can get in the folder and can get in some folders to see a video but others i can not and i do not know what the problem is

Try highlighting the application icon for Photo Elements without opening the
program. Then go to the file menu and down to Get Info. Double click Get Info
to open the information file about Photo Elements.

Under General (expanded) and just above Name & Extension there is a little
box named Locked. That box might be checked.

I do not know how it works from there as the lock box in my Photo Elements
info file is grayed out. Maybe you just have to uncheck the lock box but I
suspect it all has something to do with those permissions

Earlier today my friend was using my computer while I was at work. When I got home they told me that my computer did something weird and wouldn't boot up. I asked what happened and they said that they were in the middle of playing a game when the power went out and then came back on. When they turned the computer back on it would not boot all the way up to the XP login screen. I said alright, and sat down to see for myself.

When the computer boots up, the XP splash screen comes up and looks like it is loading, then, just before the login screen comes on, a blue screen comes up and says a Memory dump was performed and then it reboots. I rebooted 5 times and everytime it did the same thing and would not go to the boot screen. So I pulled out another HDD that I had and installed windows XP on it. Once that was all done I put that into the computer and it booted up fine. So I put my now non-log-in-able HDD as a slave and booted up again with the fresh HDD. Everything is fine, and after I got logged in the second HDD showed up under my computer. I opened it and I can see everything that was on the drive before.

Heres the thing though. I had my account password protected and my entire folder under Document and Settings made private. My question is, Is there ANY way possible for me to go in and somehow open that folder so I can get my stuff out of it? I have 4 years of stuff in there, and although I do back it up, my last backup was a month ago and I have added a lot of cur... Read more

Ok, this is a nightmare.

I do a lot of photoshop graphics for work. I open a file in photoshop and edit...then save....WRONG!! It says I cannot save because it is locked. ALL MY FILES ARE LOCKED?

How do I correct this insanity?

A:All my files are locked? AHH!!

Im sorry, I do not know much about photoshop, but I think if you use system restore prior to the point that you had the problem, you may be able to use it again. If that does not work, possibly a system image roll back may be of help. Let us know what happens.

So heres the story,
while doing this...
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...es-156750.html
I wanted to test the stability of my drive so I cut my music folder, (168G) and pasted it within the same drive, one level up. Now the issue I had previous to this didn't do any real harm to the file so I figured it couldn't hurt to try this 'caus its an easy fix right?
Well, I see that I enter the folder so I think nothing of it and attempt to reboot regular. From safe mode it says that I "cannot disturb the operation while windows is handling a file", paraphrasing at best. I wait to try again and no problem. Once back in Windows, I double check that folder and there is only one folder in it...a fraction of the collection.
So I system restore and there they are, all back in place, yay! I go through yesterday's procedure and refix my original issue and call it a night. What a fulfilling day. my machine is running great and its time to relax...
So I wake this morning go through my afternoon and fell like listening to some music but winamp can't access the files, any of them. It references them one to the next but none play...Microsoft player says: ..."cannot access the file. It may be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.
Ok...so I just dealt with the similar issue where I had to restore file permissions but this isn't as easy as just going into safe mode to unlock them. Why did... Read more
