Q: Using the SSD built in my Ideapad Y500

Do I just install important applications on my D drive instead of C drive?Or there is more to it? Thank you in advance,Elad.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,  I tried to power up laptop. It would not power up. just white blinking light. I tried most recommendations i found online, like unplug power adapter, batter, hit button 10 seconds, 15 seconds 30 seconds, remove ram nothgint works.  I removed back cover. unplugged i guess the power port. then blinking light went away, I thought maybe it's stuck in sleep mode. It was defintily dead. plugged back in power port. The blinking light came back. the fan spans. just computer does not boot up. What are the odds both batter and power adapter both dead.  thanks for your help,

I'm looking around to sell my laptop but I'm not sure what price to sell it at. Best buy would buy it at $150, which doesn't seem accurate at all. Others are selling it around $700 on Amazon.Com, which seems like too much for a used laptop? Any help please would be appreciated.

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

In a nutshell, I noticed that my laptop screen would randomly start turning off for no reason while the laptop was still running. The "fix" for this would be to open the laptop up farther. Eventually, only the most wide-open orientation would allow the screen to display, and even that has ceased to work consistently. So I have read other posts about display issues that are common, so I will try to be as specific as I can. THIS IS NOT:  A software issue, as best I can tell. My screen does not show lines or strange patterns, it just goes black. And I don't mean the display goes  blank, it actually turns off. No light. A screen issue, I don't think. The screen displays perfectly well for short periods, and then just cuts off. It seems to be effected by the position of the display (e.g. How open the laptop is). I have to open the laptop as far as it will go for best effect, and even then, the screen will simply shut off after several minutes. Sometimes I can find a "sweet spot", and get the display to function for an hour or more, so long as I don't jostle the laptop more forcefully than using keystrokes. A GPU issue. I have hooked up the laptop, during period of screen blackness, to an external display. Everything shows up fine, which I understand would not happen if the GPU was having problems. MY MAIN QUESTION FOR THOSE SMARTER AND MORE SKILLED THAN I:Is the issue likely a loose screen cable, or something similar? Something that would cau... Read more

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. Any help on this unnatural whirring sound that starts after a while is really appreciated.

Please help. Trying to upgrade it from the Store but it is stuck at installing, it seems halfway through. Left it overnight (8 hours) but still at the same place. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

I have a lenovo ideapad y500 with a 1366x768 screen, and I am looking to pop open the screen, and replace the panel with a 1920x1080 screen. Assuming that I purchase another 15.6 inch screen (size of the original screen), is this possible? A model of the y500 is sold with a 1080p display, and the graphics card in my model is more than capable of outputting such a resolution. I was just wondering if there is a chance that the connections between my laptop and new screen would not match as I do not know if there is some sort of standard port with screens. Thanks!

A:Screen upgrade lenovo ideapad y500

You would need to find out the exact model of the 1080p screen was that was sold with that model and order the same one or compatible replacement model. Laptop screens are not universally interchangeable and you can't just buy any screen and connect it.

So, long story short. I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and now it seems like the only thing that will get my laptop up and running normally again is a recovery disc from Lenovo. I just got off the phone with customer service and they informed me that recovery discs can not be ordered in USB form.  This is where my main issue is. My Lenovo Ideapad Y500 laptop did not come with a CD-ROM Drive. With that being said, I do not want to spend $69 on a recovery disc that will require me to purchase an external CD-ROM drive that potentially won't even work... When I asked customer support if I could return and get a refund for the disc if it will not boot through an external CD-ROM drive, they said no. Has anyone been able to run a recovery disc from an external cd-rom drive successfully? Any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end with this thing...

Since a few weeks, the keys I and K sometimes randomly stop working. I first noticed it four weeks ago. At first I only had this problem when entering my password (I have Windows 8.1), I would try to enter my password and then notice that my "I" didn't want to work anymore. Pressing the button for a long time made it work again. When my laptop was fully booted I wouldn't notice any problem with the keys, not even a little. But slowly over time, there was no way I could make my I work when I was entering my password and then I also noticed my K didn't want to work either. It started happening randomly when I was on the internet or writing on Wordpad: my I and K would stop working. First after a bit of pressing on both keys at the same time it started working and so I ignored it, but now sometimes i'm waiting and pressing the buttons for ten minutes long before they work properly again. For 3 minutes they work, only to stop working right afterwards again. ^, *, -, and . stop working too, but those are only minor problems. I can work without punctuation, but I can't work without my K and I. I don't think there's a problem with the keys itself, I assume if it's something with the actual keyboard then my K and I would stop working seperately at different times, and not all together at the same time? They don't feel stiff either, and I also never eat at my laptop so it's definitely not bread crumbs or anything under them if there is. I  tried something that I re... Read more

A:Y500 Ideapad, some keyboard keys stop working

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

I suspect that the USB will work without problems,  That the problem you are having is with the keyboard itself.  Since the problem is random, but slowly getting worse and centers around the K and L keys could be a good indication of a keyboard defect.   Is your system still under warranty ?

Hello. As the title says, my Ideapad Y500 is starting to have some issues. A week ago it refused to shut down. Screen would turn off but not the laptop, which would remain kind of dormant. Following some advice online I uninstalled Express Cache form the Control Panel. Now the system turns off, but I have a new problem, this time booting up.Whenever I boot up the laptop it goes to the Lenovo splash screen, then black, then resets to the splash screen and stays there forever. If I shut it down manually and then boot it up again, it goes to Windows as it should, but the whole process takes from 2 to 10 minutes. If I try to restart the system, same thing happens.  If I keep doing this I fear one day it will just die on me.Added to this, I've been getting intermitent failures of the Intel RST software, which sometimes just won't work at all. Other times it's fine. I read somewhere I should update the drivers but I don't know where to find them or if hey may harm my pc even more.I'm running Windows 8.1 (64 bits). So far, besides uninstallid Express Cache, I have run chkdsk on both disks on my system and they appear to be fine (or at least nothing comes up when running the scan). Beyond this, I have no clue how to proceed. I'm not a especially tech savvy person, so any help you guys might give me will be greatly appreciated it. Also, if you can explain it as clear and simply as possible, it would be that much better. Thanks a lot!

Hello Lenovo Community,I currently have a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad. I personally love the processing power of my laptop and have found it to satisfy most of my needs. The problem I seem to be having is with the quality of the keyboard. After about a month after purchase, one of my keys (the F key) seemed to have fallen off. I noticed after examining it that the plastic that holds the keys on simply snapped off (about 5mm of cheap plastic to hold the keys on). I sent it in and have recieved a whole new keyboard within a week. 3 weeks later and my S key has broken again. I do have warranty on it but it is a pain to sendit in EVERY 3 weeks to get a single key fixed. I was wondering if this was simply my bad luck or poor Lenovo keyboard design. I am considering returning my computer or scrapping it to get a new one with better quality. Someone let me know if it's just me that is experience this or if Lenovo has serious issues with their key design.Sincerely,Angry Lenovo Customer.

I've been using this laptop for a few years now, and while it has its fair share of small problems (track pad not working, keyboard coming loose and sometimes not working, speakers slowly dying, start ups where the screen doesn't turn on.) Despite those issues I always found a way to either fix or at least work around the problems until today.I was just watching YouTube videos when the laptop without any warning shut off instantly, even though it was plugged in, and mostly charged. After that none of the power lights would go on at all, not even the charging one. I tried unplugging it, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30 second, and every combination of those steps I could think of. Is there any hope of saving this laptop, or is it bricked?

Hello, I have ideapad y500 and  I've noticed that when ever I shut it off and power it back on the battery has drained. Its about 12% per night .. I have noticed that when  i shut it down -> unplug the power cable then i remove and again attach the battery leave it for 12hours and there weren't any battery drain. So it only appears when i just unplug the power cable and leave it. I have read some topics(some ppl have the same problem) but i haven't find any solution. Is there any solution to solve this problem?? Bios version is the latest one.. I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

I have an Ideadpad Y500 (Model 20193) running Windows 8.1. It has the original/factory 15gb mSATA SSD and ~1tb conventional SATA HDD. The two drives (SSD and HDD) are managed by Intel Rapid Storage, a sort of software RAID management utility. Although Windows Disk Management (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) sees the two drives as separate devices (see below), they are in a RAID, so to normal Windows, they just look like a single HDD. I want to remove the SSD from the RAID. It is throwing frequent errors. My Windows Event Viewer (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) is full of hundreds thousands of warnings about problems with the SSD. It is nearing end of life. A few times a day the computer will reboot -- but only when running Windows. When I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Linux) it will run for a year without rebooting. I suspect that the Ubuntu installation is bypassing the Intel Rapid Storage software RAID and just directly using the ~1tb SATA HDD (ignoring the 15gb SSD).  I can access the Intel Rapid Storage management program in Windows, but it doesn't give me the option to break apart the RAID; to remove the SSD from the RAID. Supposedly there's a way to access it during POST by pressing ctrl-I, but that doesn't work for me. I can't figure out how to access the Intel Rapid Storage management via BIOS and that's the only place where I could (in theory) break apart the RAID and remove the SSD from the equation.  I realize, of course,... Hi! I recently bought an Ideapad 510. I purchased a studio microphone and plugged it in the 3.5mm jack. At first the recording software didn't detect any mic, so i troubleshooted and the result came like "Enabled the mic" something.. Then the software detected the mic but it was the inbuilt mic. So i went in the Conexant smart audio control panel and chose the Microphone option for the 3.5mm jack. Now the software detects my microphone along with the inbuilt mic. When i speak i can hear two voices, one from the inbuilt and from the studio mic. I tried going to the Recording devices settings, but there's only one mic detected, only the default Conexant Smart audio thing is visible. If i disable it, then my studio mic also gets disabled along with the inbuilt mic. Is there any way to disable JUST the inbuilt mic? - That recording level peak from the picture was from touching my Studio mic, so its definitely detected.

Hi all

Looking for some information. I'm replacing 3 pc's in the business I work for. We use custom software and have to remain on Windows xp to avoid issues with the database hooking correctly. We have used mostly Dell pc's to run our software, and from time to time need to reinstall Windows as needed. With the Dell systems, I wipe the partition and insert a disk, reinstall, add drivers plus our software, then I'm done. I'm considering building 3 new pc's maybe around the i5 level for workstations. I was curious if there was a way to build in the Windows XP serial number like Dell and other vendors do. Is this a specific type of main board ? A function in the bios ? I would love to be able to duplicate this, if it's possible.

Thank you

A:Windows install / vendor built vs homebrew / built in serial

You can not use the same serial number for a different computer. Its illegal. You'll need to buy a copy of Windows XP for each computer or buy a Set copy that will work on 3 different computers.

hi achen9291,

If your machine was configured to have a combo drive (1TB SATA HDD + 16GB mSATA SSD)  as listed in this pdf data sheet, then this is already a good setup. The sole purpose of the 16GB mSATA SSD is to improve system performance by caching data.

It's not recommended to change the 1TB SATA HDD to as much as a Samsung 830 2.5 SSD as you won't benefit from the 16Gb mSATA caching performance. if you decide to go this step though, you can remove the mSATA SSD (or just use it as an extra storage) and replace the 1TB HDD with the Samsung.830 2.5 SSD. The size of the ODD is 9.5mm (you will need to get a HDD caddy of same size to use the 1TB HDD).

See page 39 on how to replace the HDD and page 42 on how to replace the SSD on the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

For installing Windows 8 on the Samsung 2.5 SSD, you can opt to clean install to the SSD or you can try this software (or a similar app) to migrate the yuor OS and apps from your HDD to the 2.5 Samsung SSD.

Hope this helps.

Hello,  I have a Y500 and it has been running a bit slow recently and whenever I start up my computer it would take a good 10 - 15 to become responsive. Sometimes I would get an error message saying my ''SATA drive was disconnected'' but the computer would still be fully functioning. Sometimes my explorer.exe would crash and I would have to restart the laptop.  Now my bigger issue is when I try to start up the computer I get to the Lenovo screen with the small rotating circle and windows will not load. It will eventually say that it failed and then would restart and have a message on that Lenovo screen that says ''automatic repair in progress'' after a few minutes I would get to the blue screen where I have the different system repair options. I am never able to get it to boot into Windows any longer. The options I have tried are below.  System Restore - doesn't work System Image Recovery - doesn't work  I can access the command prompt and I can get it to load into the BIOS  I'm just not sure what to do from there.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

A:Y500 Won't Boot Up

hi chuckdz3,

Welcome to the Forums.

Based from your findings, it looks like you have a bad HDD.

Things that you can try:
1. On the command prompt, type chkdsk /r to scan the drive for errors and attempt to fix them. If successful, let the machine boot normally or perform another startup repair to see if Windows boots up.

2. If Windows still doesn't boot up, press the OneKey Recovery button and choose System Recovery to restore the unit to factory settings.

If none of the above method works, I recommend you contact lenovo (for service) or you can DIY and replace the HDD. To re-install the OS, you will need to create an installation media on another PC (see this guide). If you need to backup some files, you can do it on the command prompt (see this guide).

My laptop won't go to sleep on its own. I set the power saver options to 15 mins display off and 30 minutes go to sleep, but it just doesn't do that last step. I haven't been on my laptop often the past few days but I've been wondering why it's warm/hot when I don't use it for the entire day. I suspected it doesn't go to sleep so I changed the settings to 1 min each and after the first min, it'll turn off the display fine, but after another minute, it won't go to sleep. Anyone know what I can do?
