Scanning individual files and drives in Norton 360,

Q: Scanning individual files and drives in Norton 360,

I just installed Norton 360 and to my surprise it does not appear possible to select an individual drive or file for scanning. From what I can tell you can you must scan all drives installed on the computer. Does anyone else know if there is a way to select individual drives or files?

Preferred Solution: Scanning individual files and drives in Norton 360,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Scanning individual files and drives in Norton 360,

I'm using norton AV corp 10. When I run a full system scan, it reports a very low number of files as having being scanned and the scan is way too quick for the number of drives and files I have (15 mins) compared with other PCs I run the software on. Also when I go and tell it to scan a particular folder (as apposed to doing a full scan) where I know there are viruses, it will find the viruses, but the full scan won't report them. The options are set to scan all files, and I have no exceptions set up. So I don't know why it's behaving like this.

A:Norton AV not scanning all files / folders

Is it that the full system scan completes in a normal manner and gives the status or if just will go away once its done from your screen ?

I have already disabled indexing in "Services".

"indexing" is still checked in the "properties" section of all individual drive partitions. Is it necessary or advisable to uncheck "indexing" in these areas?

thx

A:Disable indexing on individual drives

I'd right click and do it manually. When you stop index services on say for example the c drive it only stops the service on that drive.

When you disabled index services you will see it says "local computer"
So therefore it's only stopping the service for that drive.

Hello,

I have computer with four SATA drives that were previously set up with a RAID 10 configuration. The computer has a solid state drive as Drive C. Whoever installed the solid state drive rendered the RAID virtual drive unusable. I wonder if the BIOS will not support a RAID array with a solid state drive(?).

Nevertheless, I need to use the SATA drives for additonal data storage, but have not been able to change the BIOS to make them available. I was successful in clearing the RAID configuration, but the drives are still not accessible as individual drives.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:iNeed help clearing RAID config to allow use of individual drives.

Most likely, these drives are attached to a hardware RAID controller. When you start the computer, right after POST, it will quickly ask if you want to boot into the RAID control panel, maybe by pressing CTRL+S or some other key combo before booting into Windows. Once you are in the RAID control panel, you can make adjustments to the RAID array, you can break it to make all the drives available, or reset it as RAID 10 again.

Hiya all.

At work I have setup a usb hard drive on the router and have mapped the drive on our users windows 10 pc's.

I am creating two folders on the drive. One for general use and one for sensitive files.

If it is possible I would like to password protect the folder with the sensitive files so that only authorised users can access it by entering a password.

Please can you help?

Many thanks in advance.

I tested to scan one file with Norton, a pdf file. However when the scanning was done, the result said that Norton had scaned a total of 3 files? I tried scanning another pdf and then it said it scanned 2 files.
How could that be that it scanned multiple files when a pdf are just one 1 file?

A:Scanning one pdf in Norton?

Its normal...I just scanned a few using another AV product I was having it show 2 on some 6 on another 36 on one.
I am not sure why,,but would guess it would be how the file was assembled

Not sure if I should post here or in Software (Other), O/Ss ...

I have Norton AntiVirus 2002, running Windows XP Home. There are 5 User Accounts, all Administrator status. Only User 4 has a password on his account.

When I run a full scan from my desktop, NAV will not scan files under c:\documents and settings\user3 or user 4. NB- I also can't access files in these folders from my desktop (Explorer).

I contacted Norton about this once, it was "because the accounts are passworded". That was the case then but is not the answer now because User 3 is no longer passworded. So it must be something else to do with permissions.

Any advice would be appreciated as it's a pain having to scan 3 TIMES every time new defs come out.

Apologies for being dense, TIA,
Andy

Not just a bump ...

Phoned Norton ; 2002 is no longer supported, even if it was they'd charge me for advice. Found nothing helpful on their k-base, in the prog help, in the downloaded pdf manual.

Noticed something weird about my folder structure (Explorer) tho'.

Under MyComp, I have a: + c: + q: (CD/DVD) drives, then Control Panel, then a Shared Docs folder, then MyDocs folders for the 3 users I CAN scan from my desktop. These 3 folders are also present (kind of replicated) under C:\Documents and Settings, but MyDocs for the 2 users I CAN'T scan from my desktop only exist under C:\Documents and Settings.

As a test, I did a file search for a Word doc I created yesterday. I can see it twice ; once under

My Computer (?\?) Andy's Documents\CWU

, once again under

C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\My Documents\CWU.

Search found it twice but reported the path as

C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\My Documents\CWU.

This makes me think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong in how I've set up the file structure/am saving files. Any suggestions?

TIA,
Andy

XP Home and NIS 2004.
Occasionally I see an NIS popup from the system tray area . It says something like "An application has requested a virus scan of {jumbled up letters & numbers}." Then it disappears right away. I don't think I'm doing anything in particular to cause it, just looking at web sites. It happens so fast I can't really see it or read it. The popup appears in the same manner as when it scans an OE6 email or gets the live Virus Definition updates - silently rises up from the system tray. It does not appear on the middle of the screen -it's not an "Alert" - nothing seems wrong, really. It just happened now, and before this, it's happened maybe three times.

Does anyone know what I'm talking abut?
What is it scanning and why? Is it alright?

I have Norton 360 on a Windows 8.1 64bit OS.

Every so often when a file opens a little box in the bottom right corner shows Norton is analyzing it and it comes up safe and goes away or dangerous and asks me to do something.

Sometimes the file named "applebmdavlocalize.dll" is scanned over and over again. It actually just stopped now as I was typing this. But I was waiting for a good 5 minutes or so and it normally doesn't take more than 10 seconds when it does a quick scan like this.

I have googled to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing but didn't find anything. Could my Norton be broken?

A:Norton is scanning the same file over and over...

I think you misspelled the name of the file and it should be applebmdavlocalized.dll (with a "d' after localize). From what I've been able to find it's related to Apple's iCloud. I assume you're using this?

It could be related to iCloud synching bookmarks on IE so you could try unchecking that function.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

MpEvMsg.dll.mui
MsMpRes.dll.mui
MpAsDesc.dll.mui

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. Any advice is appreciated.

A:Where can I get specific individual .dll files?

You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

If you don't have one you can download one here,

Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

I recently bought Star Wars the Original Radio Drama on audiobook. I want to copy/rip this into mp3 files so I can listen to them on my phone and/or mp3 player. I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I didn't notice this until I was on the third disc. Now I have multiple versions with the same title and haven't been able to tell them apart other than deleting them.

I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

Is it possible to assign individual files to a library? So far, I have only found a way to put a folder in a library and when I do that the entire file list for that folder appears in the library.

Thank you.

A:Individual Files in Libraries

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

Hi people.

Recently my brother downloaded some nasty software with even nastier bundled crap (yeah, I know, it's always the "brother", I know, clich? ).

Windows Defender stopped some trojans and a subsequent scan found 4 of them.
I also manually removed some crap from the windows uninstaller app (some creepy chinese stuff) and made further scans with Defender and Malwarebytes. Also checked with Hijack This.

So far, it appears all clean, boot included.

However I had a USB stick and a hard drive connected while this happened and I would like to be reasonably sure that there's no crap on it.
I have sensible stuff and various software backup on it and I cannot simply format them.

The drives work fine and have no odd behaviour or files, however my suspicion was raised by the fact that on both of them there were hidden files put on "show" setting. It was nothing harmful, just USB drive software but since I could not remember if it was I that had set hidden files on "Show", it raised my suspicions. It could have been me while going on "crap hunt" before, but cannot really remember.

Could you suggest me a malware scanner (preferably free) specifically made to sanitize usb drives?

A:Scanning USB drives for malware

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Go here and click 'Run ESET Online Scanner'.If you are not using Internet Explorer, double-click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to install it, then click 'Run'.
Turn off the real-time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Here's how
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
If using Internet Explorer, allow the ActiveX control to install when asked.
Once the components have downloaded, tick the option Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications
Click on Advanced Settings
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked.
Ensure these options are ticked:Scan Archives
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology

Next to 'Current scan targets: Operating memory, Local drives', click the Change... button.
Tick all the boxes that correspond to your external/inserted drives.
Click Start
Wait for the scan to finish.
When the scan is done, if it shows a screen that says "Threats found!", click "List of found threats", and then click "Export to text file..."
Save that text file to your desktop, and then copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

However, little mischievous people may go into this if I am not on my computer and be a pain. Therefore, I want a way of protecting it from opening up in it's main application.

I don't really need it to be sophisticated, it is not to prevent hackers etc, it is merely to stop people having instant access to it from my desktop.

I doubt there is any built-in feature of windows, therefore what third-party applications can do this?

A:Password protect individual files

just create your own account and keep them in your documents folder. nobody will have access as long as they do not have admin privileges. or keep them on a flash drive. I would strongly urge you not to password protect individual files because you could forget the password and lose access to the files. this forum is full of locked threads because of users wanting help with forgotten passwords when they were trying to protect files.

When trying to configure W7 backup I can drill down to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but the only thing that's shown in the Outlook checkbox window is "Accounts."

The .pst is not in Accounts, it's in the root of the Outlook folder.

2. How do I set it up so that Norton will inform me there was a missed scan. Because right now it inly informs me after a month of no scanning.

The drive on my MacBook failed recently and I really need to get my data back. I am hesitant to take my hard drive in for repair/recovery for fear that, somehow, the techs will be able to see the individual files in a dmg file I keep on my laptop. They will be extracting data by taking my drive apart (to bypass bad sectors?), rather than by just using software. What do Dmg files look like from a tech's perspective? Can they see file names? Preview images? Or, will they simply see a dmg file? Thanks for your time!

Windows XP Pro SP3
I have 4 WD external HDD's purchased between 2004 and 2008. On these harddrives are various files, including but not limited to the following:
+backups for my primary hd
+tv shows
+movies
+program installers
+personal movie collection used for editting
I have found that certain files cause windows explorer to crash - be they movies, tv shows, installer files, files on backup, etc. - when highlighted and cause Dr. Watson to go bonkers. There seems to be no connection: files with similar sources, extensions, sizes, use dates, names, pathnames, etc. seem to work fine. In all there are just over 20,000 files, of which maybe 30 cause this problem. It is possible in transfers they were just simply improperly transferred (causing pieces of the file to be lost forever), but there is a file I KNOW that happened to and Dr. Watson never went bonkers and Explorer never crashed when I selected it; it was an .avi of "Beetlejuice" whose transfer was terminated before completion, and all it does when selected is simply not play in WMP. Any ideas?

Have you tried "Taking ownership of a drive in XP Pro"

I can't get rid of CyberDefender or MyIdentityDefender. I don't like it because it severely limits the information that comes up on the web to choose from. I've tried to remove it with Control Panel Add or Remove programs. It kind of flashes real quick and then just stays there. Some blogs recommended using certain free (or so they said were free but were not) downloads of spyware removers. The problem with these is that I am at risk of having it remove something my job downloaded, some software that works with microsoft word and then I can't work (at home). I had to do Go Back To an Earlier date on the computer to undo this. I need to know what the specific files are I need to remove and how to find them in the computer. Sorry this question was so wordy. I'm new at this.

A:Need to remove CyberDefender or MyIdentityDefender by its individual files only.

I work with autistic children and i have a bunch of VBscripts set up to say things through the speakers like "I want juice". I was wonder it it was possible to associate a photo with these files so when they are viewed as thumbnails you would see a picture of a Juice box. Other scripts would be "I want cookie" or "I want Toy".

Below is an example of the script i have in a notepad with .vbs extension:

Dim Message, sapi
message="I Want Juice"
Set sapi=Createobject("sapi.spvoice")

A:Is it possible to assign photos as Icons to individual files?

Hi Daysaved, welcome to TSF.

You need to re-size the photo to about 20x20 pixels, or any standard icon resolution.
Save the file as .ico

You can now right click your file, go to 'Properties'. Under the 'shortcut' tab click 'Change Icon'. Browse to your newly created .ico file and select it.

This should work for all types of files.

HI  I did a one-click backup of my Yoga 3 pro machine when I did a fresh load. It worked like a charm and was convenient. I now, however, need to get some individual files from that backup but cannot find how to do so.  I have checked several forums but have not come right. Please, can you offer some assistance?

My wedding photographer put all of the pictures she took on four disks, two of them are importing correctly, but two of them show data on the disks, but no individual JPG files. I tried importing through windows live photo gallery and finding through my computer, I also tried the open folder to view files, everything says there are no picture files on this disk, even though we have viewed them using another computer.

A:CD shows data, but not individual picture files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Photographers own the rights to print the pictures .. And usually don't give you the readable Images that the camera took.
They probably have proprietary software to read the pictures ..
The discs you can't read are probably what you'd take to get them printed.
The images you can see .. Are low resolution copies that probably won't make good prints ..For previews only.

They don't want you to print them yourself or have anyone else do it ..They want to charge you.
What's the extension (file type) of the data files in the Disc that you can't view ???

In doing some searching for info about the current state of technology for CD / DVD burners/drives I was surprised to find it so difficult. I personally have used only a CD R/W drive, but recognize that DVD technology should be acquired also for my new computer. I am also given to understand that most DVD drives can read CDs, but even that needs to be confirmed with each unit.

Unless I'm mistaken, a single drive (even the so-called "combo" units) can only burn one type of disc, either CD or DVD, but not both. They appear to usually be able to read the other format, but not write it. Is that an accurate impression?

To make a long story as short as possible, what recommendations do you have for selecting a drive for a new computer that would permit me to use my existing collection of CDs ( and to both read and write on them), but also put me at the forefront of DVD technology and versatility and be able to both read and write DVDs? This is another way of admitting that I haven't figured out all the existing formats yet...sorry.

Again, in summary, is there any combo unit available that will read and write/burn both CDs and DVDs in most formats, or is it advisable to install one of each type of drive to get the most performance and versatility?

Hi,
When I go to google (this does not happen all the time about every 2 or 3 times) I run a search but when I click on a link it takes me to a random site and not to where the link said it would. I have run spybot and Anti-Malwear. But it has not fixed the problem. I tried to run Norton 2009 Anti Virus scan but it just hangs at the scanning common areas screen ( I left it running overnight and it went nowhere). Also windows malicious software removal tool found nothing. One website suggested cleaning out my cookies, that diid not work eather. Here is a copy of my hijackthis.log

I have Norton 2003. I noticed that the email scanning and auto protect weren't enabled. I've followed all the directions on the site for determining if norton is loading fully and it is not. I followed their directions on uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I still have the problem, so I've go to web for help. I see that your forum has been able to assist others with issues similar to this, so i thought that I'd give it a whirl and see what happens.

I recently installed Norton System Works 2003 in Windows 98. The installation was completed without any problem. When I open Norton Antivirus, I see an error in the Email Scanning Tab it is as follows . d="id_txt_navstats_email_license_expired" class="LineTextUrgent">Inactive
The Script Blocking and the Full System Scan Tabs are shown as " Refreshing".
What does the Error indicate ? I use Outlook Express regularly. Will it harm my system ? How do I solve the problem? I have already re installed the program twice but it shows the same error everytime.

A:Email scanning errors in Norton Antivirus 2003

When you re-installed the program, did you uninstall it first? I have done some research and it seems to indicate that a full uninstall, reboot, reinstall may fix the problem. Do you have any other Norton products because you should uninstall and reinstall those too? If you had an old version of SystemWorks or Antivirus, you may need to use a removal tool from Symantec.

This article will tell you how to uninstall NAV (go to bottom section and follow steps under NSW since you installed this as part of Norton System Works):

Hi,

When I run Norton Anti virus 2007 on 2 of my computers it will not complete a full scan. It will freeze at a point during the scan and then I have to cancel. I went to their website and ran full scan in safe mode and then ran it again in regular mode. Scan completed in Safe mode with 1 vrus found which it corrected. The site suggested now running a system scan again in regular mode; same problem. Went and unchecked that it checks compressed files, still the same problem It will not complete a full scan.

Please help.

Why is it when my Norton anti-virus 2001 program scans my files, it only goes to 33% and then stops? What I mean is that I'll see "Norton" on the bottom menu bar and it is scanning files, and if I put my cursor on it, I can see the percentage of how many files it has gone through. It always stops around 33%. Why would this be? How do I get a 100% scan?

Thanks for any help!!!
