Windows Exploerer Properties, Attributes Question

Q: Windows Exploerer Properties, Attributes Question

After copying folders, containing files and documents, from W98 or W2000 to XP, via Windows Explorer, I sometimes find these files have picked up the "Read-Only" attribute.

This causes editing problems. So in Windows Explorer I right click and select "Properties" on a folder (some of these folders have sub-folders, and hundreds of files, documents with various extensions in them). The box next to "Read-Only" is usually grayed with a check mark in it (meaning some files are not read-only).

I uncheck the "Read-Only" box and hit apply. I'm then given a choice between un-Read-Onlying just this folder or Un-Read-Onlying the folder and sub-folders. I always select the sub-folder option. A progress bar appears and it looks like the attribute is being changed to uncheck "Read-Only" from all the files in the folder and sub-folders.

But not so. I go to edit a file or document and too many times I get the "Read-Only" message. Why doesn't XP deliver on unchecking "Read-Only"?

Preferred Solution: Windows Exploerer Properties, Attributes Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I'm looking for an answer to a question that is bothering me for a while.
What are the minimum access rights/permissions that should be granted to a user so that he can compress a file using right-click/Properties/General/Advanced/Compress contents to save disk space?

1. Read
2. Write
3. Modify
4. Full control.

Thank You in advance.

A:Question about Windows 7 advanced file attributes

Hello Deceb, and welcome to Sevenforums!

I have a limited user account that I am using currently, and it has full control of word/publisher files without ever having changed permissions. I can compress contents to save disk space as well. I would think the ability would automatically be granted to you, but if not, then perhaps full control is the option you want.

I would recommend against compressing files, however, unless you are desperate for disk space. It will take a slightly longer time to open files if you compress them.

Hey all!

I just wonder, is there a way to actually change all four (4) file attributes from the file properties dialog of a file?

This was possible with Windows 95! Imagine that! Windows 95!...

But it's not possible with Windows 98!
It's not possible with Windows Me (Mistake Edition, *cough*)!
It's not possible with Windows 2000!
It's not possible with Windows XP!
It's not possible with Windows Vista!
And it's not possible with Windows 7!

Why would you want to use the attrib command to change file attributes? Because that's the only thing I know of that allows setting all four attributes. The four attributes being the Read-only, Hidden, Archive, and System.

Is there by any chance a way to add these attribute options to the file properties dialog?...

A:How do you change file attributes from the file properties dialog?

You can see on samples below how the file properties dialog may look like on different Windows versions.

Windows 95
Source: http://www.web-friend.com/help/win9x/95help8.html

Windows 98
Source: http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21302
Windows XP

Windows Vista
Source: http://www.nicholasoverstreet.com/2010/03/windows-7-annoyance-file-properties/

Windows 7
Source: http://www.nicholasoverstreet.com/2010/03/windows-7-annoyance-file-properties/

The dialog may look the same in Windows Vista and Windows 7, but they behave a little bit differently. As you can see from the lower most image, the the time stamps are displayed as "X hours ago" instead of actual time it was created, modified or accessed. It will display time normally as with all previous Windows versions only after 24 hours have passed. I don't like this, but as far as I know it's the only change they have done to the file properties dialog in Windows 7.

Not all images are missing, just some. I have tried changing the "view", also the check next to show images in "Advanced" tab of Internet Options IS checked. I have re-installed Macromedia and Java. I have tried turning off Ad Blocking on my Norton. Please help, this is very confusing.

So this has been happening for a couple of days now and i haven't been able to fix it.

A few things i've tried;

Reinstalled GPU drivers (Nvidia GeForce 332.21 Driver)
Restored windows to a previous point (about a month ago, which i'm sure was before this problem)
Run virus scan (online, and on my computer).

I have collected some things (and attached) the WER file from the crash which i found in the event viewer, and this, which was just text in the viewer which didn't seem to have a file.

In XP SP3, I want to change the Windows Explorer shorcut target by adding some attributes. I have been able to do so in the past but now XP is not allowing it.
I want to change the default target so it reads : %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:/ but Windows says the addition of the attributes makes the target unacceptable.

Is there a setting or a switch that is preventing the change? Is this related to XP SP3 as opposed to SP2? I've made the change in XP SP2 in the past.

Hi. I'm on Windows XP Home.

I would like to prevent an installer from deleting files that it puts in a particular folder. Is this possible? The installer encounters an error at the end of the process and deletes everything. It was suggested to me that if I could find a way to "keep" the files, I would be able to get things working.

Any ideas?

A:Folder Properties question.

If the installer choses to delete all the files after the error then there is no way to keep them. Unless you know how to re-write the installer exe file but i wouldnt suggest that.

A:Right click/properties question

The only thing that I've seen, if you copy the file, the copy will get a new created date. The same when downloading from your camera. Move the files(not a good idea) and the date the photo was taken is the Created Date. Copy them and you get today's date.

Have you copied or edited the photos?

Do you have any add-ons enabled for Internet Explorer? Try going to Tools--> Manage Add-ons--> Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Try disabling all of them at first, and see if the error goes away. If you get no errors, start re-enabling each one of them one by one. Use Internet Explorer during the interval closing and opening it several times. If you get errors after enabling a particular add-on, it probably is the reason for the crash(es).

I have a Surface RT. IT uses I.E.
Now since Microsoft discontinues I.E. what the HELL are we all supposed to use? RT users are just stuck in a limbo like place and only gets what MS deems worthy. You cant install normal apps due to ARM architecture and are limited to use only those apps
supplied in the Microsoft Store. i tried that UCBrowser crap but it is a FAKE app (this is in the Microsoft Store) that uses (calls) I.E so basically it's the same browser.
Since we all are not supposed to use I.E any longer (discontinued) what the hell are we supposed to use?

Filtering for files in Windows Explorer was introduced in Windows Vista but is gone from Windows 7. Now we are supposed to use Windows Search box to build a query and use it instead of filtering. My question is how to search or filter by files attributes. Say I want to see only Hidden files in my folder or exclude files marked as archived.
I've checked the following two guides. There are quite a lot of properties we can filter by. But attributes are not among them.

Advanced Query Syntax;
Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax.

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) and File Attributes

Someone mentioned below that there's a popup displaying the attributes list but didn't spell out what those values were, so I'm going to go the extra step just in case that list isn't populating for you and so future web searches can actually show the values:
attributes:16    is D
attributes:32    is A
attributes:33    is RA
attributes:34    is HA
I'm sure there are others, but that popup seems to only give you the attributes that are present among the files that are in the dir you're searching so this list is incomplete.  It would be nice if it was provided on the web somewhere - a good place
would've been among those syntax links above.

I am having a similar issue. My laptop was working fine one day then the next it wasnt. I tried to do a windows restore but it only lets me go back to when I upgraded to SP1 a little more than a week ago. It wont let me log into websites (facebook, gmail, myspace, etc.) but I can get to their main pages. Its not a network problem because my roommates laptop can get into these sites. I was able to download SP2, which is what I'm currently on, but I cant download updated Java. My windows update doesnt connect either. Hi -
As it probably says on the little box in the corner I'm pretty much of a beginner. I can follow instructions, though. As I was looking to resolve a problem which I posted some time yesterday (if I get no responses I'll post it tomorrow again - or point new people to it) I may have stumbled across a bigger problem. I was reading about Process Explorer and gave it a try. Sure enough, the 2nd entry that it came up with was Hardware Interrupt. I have no other information except that it was on the second line under System Idle Process. It showed nothing else under any columns. I know I need to get rid of it. Can someone help? Please keep in mind that you have to give me relatively simple direction. Computer isn't even my second language.

So the other day my pc screen went totally blank with no icons or start menu. The only thing that appeared was the wallpaper. Earlier Avira alerted to a couple of possible threats but I thought they were false positives. Though I was fairly certain I had some sort of bug because I was getting popups for different electronics sites. I tried to run some antispayware but was not having luck. Superantispyware would not run at all. I would get an error message sating access denied. I tried to run Malwarebytes and it appeared to be working then something happened... I minimized it or something and it went poof. So I had no icons or start menu after that.

I tried restarting multiple times but no luck. The same thing happened in safe mode except the screen was black instead of having wallpaper. I could only get access to cmd prompts and task manager.

After I realized I could open and run programs using the task manager I managed to run system restore and after system restore ran it said it was unable to restore anything and no changes were made to the pc however I did have my desktop back. So I used the pc for about a day when suddenly around 9 or 10pm everything went blank again. I managed to run Malwarebytes during this time and it did seem to find several files (not just cookies) and I removed them and allowed the pc to restart as it requested.

Then I tried to restore it again but for some reason I couldn't get it to work the same way I did before. So I just tinkered with... Read more

I have a folder of home videos that I back up to a USB key with Syncback. The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder. But here's the thing; If I right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties', it tells me I have 564 files in 85 folders, taking 2.67Gb.

However, if I open the folder and search for *.* to show all the files, then select all, right-click, 'Properties', it tells me I have 2224 files in 249 folders taking 6.41Gb. Still, at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says 649 items selected.

This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key.

Treesize also shows 2.67Gb for both folders.

In fact as far as I can figure, what with everything else on the same USB key, there wouldn't even be room for a 6Gb folder.

I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see.

Can anyone please explain this anomaly? I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out!

In the Floppy Disk Drive, R.click folder to go to properties-General, there are three options in the 'Attributes' Section at the bottom of the window. Those options are 'Read Only', 'Archive' and 'Hidden Archive'. I lost a file using the Hidden Archive and cannot find it anywhere. Can some one tell me if I can get back the lost file, and what the Archive option is for.

Go to Windows Explorer. From the menu, hit View-Options (or folder options if Win98). Select the View tab and make sure you have "show all files" selected, and no "hide..." options selected. Hit OK, the View-Refresh. You should see your file, dimmed. Select it and change its attribute.

Firstly...what are Attributes..as in the jpg below...also even though I regularly ' clean up ' and use spybot, adaware, scan disc defrag and all else imaginable, there are things in the list that go back to 99....even after a few reformats...are these safe to delete.

AND...' sorry about this ' I only know how to attach one jpg to a post..next question in post below....

Hi All,

I'm having trouble trying to find a solution to this problem. I have WSB and from what I understand the black text that I want to change cannot be done using WSB.
So what I would like to know is whether there are other methods I could use to change the black text? Could this be done by editing the shellstyle.dll? Or could I HEX edit some some other file to achieve what I want?
