Big Problem Playing files on cds using Windows Media Player 10

Q: Big Problem Playing files on cds using Windows Media Player 10

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. What do I need to download to fix this problem?

The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. I try to play them and they play for 1 or 2 minutes pause at the end and then move to the next clip, and when I fast forward the clip I am able to see some more of what wasn't shown in the first 1 or 2 minutes but it won't finish playing the whole clip. Again, I am able to view all of the clips perfectly on my uncle's computer.

At first I thought that the problem was with the cd-rw's, but since they work fine on my uncle's computer I have to believe that it is a problem with the media player. I've tried playing them with Realplayer and a couple other media players, but I keep having the same problem. I think that the Windows Media Player needs something downloaded, but I don't no what to download. Both my laptop and destop run on Windows XP Service pack 2 and they both have Windows Media Player 10.

Someone please tell me what to do to fix these problems.
Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My new laptop got my old music files from my old laptop via third party computer on a stick and media player 12 will not play wma files.  The files that won't play are ones I had the cd for.  I have tried several things none of which fixed it
to include contacting Microsoft and letting them run the computer.  The sfc scan has been run twice, the media player has been uninstalled and installed something  like three times.  VLC and iTunes downloaded and files downloaded to iTunes have
not converted to mp3 as expected, perhaps it is something with that I am not doing.  Many people on this and I appreciate the efforts

Hello,

I have a memory card camcorder that records video as .ASF files (MPEG4 I think too) and until now have had no problem playing back the video files that I have recorded.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

Martin

A:Trouble playing ASF files and Windows Media Player

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

i have sent the info. to Microsoft, but there haven't been any fixes. I do have the latest updates for it, any solutions or what's the next step...perhaps a error number is what you need?

you can roll it back to wmp9 in add/remove-windows componets and delete the wmp10 install file. then redownload it. but you may have some conflict or it could be just a bad file. i like 9 better then 10 anyway.

Got a new computer at work (Dell Optiplex 760 w 3.25 GB RAM - running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3). When I try to play my music files (originally downloaded from purchased CD's on my old computer) on this new computer through Windows Media Player the sound is stuttering. Randomly. My IT dept. can't figure it out. I was running WMP v. 9 and today I updated to v. 11. It doesn't matter. Still stuttering. I have little Bose desktop speakers. When I go into the control panel on my computer and click on the "sounds and audio devices" icon it says SoundMax HD Audio. I'm assuming that's the sound card? The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to medi... Read more

I have windows media player 11, afaik the whole codec pack, and windows xp. Normally WMP works perfectly, except when i try and play videos in websites. The videos aways screen as just a plain green screen, with the audio working normally.

If i download the vieos however, they play fine in the WMP player itself.

Im pretty sure i have all the right codecs, but havent got a clue how to rectify this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so Im getting this problem with Windows Media Player. Ive never really bothered with this problem untill now (I use LimeWire to play music instead). But I want to start useing it, but I get that annoying message when I try and play a song.

I looked for a solution in the 'Web Help' option, but I didnt find a definate answer to my problem. It said that another program has changed the files or something. This had never happened before I got LimeWire, so Im thinking LimeWire has messed the files around, but because it wasnt a direct answer to my problem, I thought maybe its somthing else. I dont want to get rid of LimeWire, because thats what I use to download my music, and It may not fix the problem. :/

I hope thats all the information needed.

Hello.
A year ago, a random day, I suddenly started to face a problem with playing sound files:

This error message kept popping up when trying to play any type of sound file. (mp3, avi, m4a, you name it)
When trying it with another media player (VLC Media Player), no error appeared, but no sound either (just a blank screen and the play button doing nothing)
Playing video files (mp4, avi, flv, ...) did show the video, but no sound at all.
I tried numerous things like installing codec packs like K-Lite, with no positive results.
After some searching , I did find a "fix" by going into the settings of the Playback devices and checking disable all sound effects, however I think this isn't a significant fix and worse issues are behind this.
(I haven't actually thought about posting a thread about this the entire year )

I recently tried to find a better fix for this. The integrated Windows problem solvers does nothing productive in this situation. It never find any problems.
I did try to restore WMP settings to default, no difference either.

As far as I can remember, this issue arose a month or so after I updated my Realtek HD Audio drivers. That is why I blame that. I couldn't roll it back, but I managed to find the "stock" drivers for my PC model on the manufacturer's site (eMachines model ET1870; bought back in 2011), but that did not solve anything either.
Also, because of this I doubt if updating audio drivers is a very good idea... I think it destabil... Read more

A:Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file

If it was a driver issue, you would have the issue as soon as you started the PC, not a month later. Create a manual System Restore point (System Restore) and update your drivers.

If it gets worse, roll back the drivers or restore the system with the manual restore point you just created. After all, You can still try to install even an older driver.

You could be missing a CODEC, what type of file is it? This utility can tell you: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's also a chance that the video card driver needs to be updated, there's lots of little glitches with display drivers at the moment.

unfortunately, most encodes of wm files require a full download before you can ff or rw. if you are using standard permissions in your browser, the file will download in the background to your temp files folder while it is streaming...watch the status bar, once it is completed, then ff & rw should function.
as for dropping the stream, if you are trying to ff or rw too early, this could cause issues
alternative is to right click - save target as, download and then watch

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Recently I have started having problems playing DVDs in Windows Media Player 11.

Discs that previously played without any problem now do not play smoothly at all and seem to "stutter".

CDs appear to play OK - although, having said that, I am not sure they are playing as smoothly as they used to. It could be my imagination but I am sure there is a discernible change on live CD recordings where one track runs into another.

I have completely uninstalled and re-installed WMP 11 and the problem remains the same.

Anything played via Media Center is problem free.

I only purchased my laptop in November 2006 and am a bit of a novice so this might be something really simple but I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

Does it happen anytime you use winamp and/or mediaplayer, or only when playing those tracks?
I'd go check on two things, first the build-in volume settings of your players, or second, the fact your files might have gotten corrupted when your pc crashed.
It's also possible that some level of your players got corrupted when your baby-toy went down.
What was the reason it crashed?
A virus or an OS error?
What where the progs you where running at that moment?

Whenver I click on a video link, Media Player opens as it should but then brings up a dialog saying its downloading. If I click "cancel" before the download completes the video will play. If it completes the download that dialog box closes and a message comes up saying it cannot play the file. Also, I do not know where the files are being downloaded to. This had never happened until I had Razeware spyware problems, but have just gone through a long process with Khazars in the Security forum solving that.

I've tried to find any option in Media player that might tell it to automatically download links, but have not found anything.

BTW, I'm running Media Player 10 (maybe 9, but I think I updated).

A:Media Player Problem~ Downloading Clips and then not playing

Also, I should mention that I'm not trying to download the files. They are just miscellaneous clips I want to watch and not save in the computer anywhere.

Help....
I have some .wmv files that I would like to watch. (dirtbike riding stuffs)
I have watched these movies in the past but now all of a sudden I click on the files and Windows Media Player opens up like it's gonna play the clip but nothing ever happends. Nadda, Zero...nuth'n
This also applies for .wmv files off the internet.
(I've tested with many .wmv files and media player always opens up like it's gonna play but never does)

It has worked in the past.

I have Vista Business x64 sp1
I've tried to reinstall windows media player but I get a message telling me I already have the latest version instsalled: 11.0.6001.7000
I downloaded this, Windows Media Player Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this Microsoft Corporation program. Expand your horizons in the field of playing videos., which says it's version 11.0.6001.7000 but I still get the same error message.

I googled fix's and such but nothing I tried has helped out.
Tried reinstalling SP1, won't let me, says I have it installed already.

I'm not that great with Vista in regards to uninstalling media player (if that's possible) in order to reinstall it.
If someone can help me out here, I'd much appriaciate it.

Thank you.

For quite some time, the only way I have been able to play mp4 video has been by changing the file type to .avi.  I would very much like to get this problem fixed, and appreciate any suggestions.
I have attached an image file of the message I get.

Thanks

I recently installed a DVD burner on a computer with windows xp home sp2. When I try to play dvd's in windows media player I get this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.Click to expand...

Of course doing those things doesn't fix anything.

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Media Player Playing DVD's

The message is kind of strange -- but the bottom line is that Windows Media Player has never come with the mpeg-2 decoder needed for playing DVDs.

For this you must have a 3rd party player installed such as PowerDVD-- or if you don't care about using WMP -- you can view just about anything in VLC: >>

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

To check whether Windows already has the required decoder, use this:

Hi,

I'm trying to play a few audios, but keep getting a message in WMP when trying to open them; that says: Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.

Can anyone give me any advice on how to play them?

A:Windows Media Player Not Playing MP3's

Where did you get the mp3s from? Are you sure they are good? Have you tried playing them with any other media player such as VLC?

I need some serious help here.

I had downloaded a video with .mkv extension from azureus. It was playing in both vlc and wmp10 but with jerky video.
So I decided to install a codec for playing mkv files.
I went to http://www.cccp-project.net/ and installed their codec pack. Then wmp10 stopped playing the mkv file!!!
Then I panicked and uninstalled the cccp codec pack. Now wmp10 plays no media file

Help!!!!!!!
Someone told me I have to restore my Directshow! Is it true? If so, how do I do this?

Hi: I was trying to record from a radio station a recording of someone I know who has written a music piece and by mistake I saw urge and downloaded the program. When I realized I did not want this program, I deleted it. There was a message not to do it--that it would block other users from logging onto the computer (Which is a violation of the anti-trust laws) however, I did not listen and deleted the entire program from the program files. Now I cannot get any music from the radio site and it has blocked real player. MSN should be sued again.HELP!!!

Welcome to SF arkasharma

Do you have any codec packs installed? If yes which one?

We usually suggest Sharks007's codecs. You can get it from here: Download Windows 7 Codecs 3.6.8 - FileHippo.com

Some steps that you may need to follow after installation of Sharks codecs.
Click on the
Scroll down to Shark007s codecs folder.
Expand it and select the settings application by right click run as administrator button.
On the bottom click on Shark007 SUGGESTED settings.
Lastly you will get a confirmation dialogue that all the videos will open with windows media player (but actually they will open with other players as well)
Attached is a picture as reference.

And some prefer the Klite Codec pack from this link: Download K-Lite Codec Pack 8.92 (Full) - FileHippo.com with basic next next next installation steps.

Install either of it but make sure you've removed any other codec packs previously installed.

Let us know how it goes.

I recently got a Zune and for the Zune software to work, WMP needs to work. A few months ago, it stopped playing music altogether. Not one song. It won't even play anything off of a CD, or on the internet. I was probably on the phone with Zune for 7-8 hours for them to tell me they couldn't help me. I was then connected to Microsoft, who told me I could call Acer or pay 60 dollars plus tax to Microsoft for them to help me. I called Acer and they said I would have to pay $60 per 30 mins. I don't have that kind of money right now and i just want my WMP fixed!!
Can someone help me please!!

A:Windows Media Player not playing music! please help!

Welcome
Here's an answer that someone found (seems like alot of trouble to me, syncing music to Att phone then back to,,,,)
http://askville.amazon.com/Zune-Win...edia-player/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5785573

I suggest reinstalling the Media Player. Click Start, type Turn Windows features on and off

Uncheck the player, apply, restart Windows, recheck, apply, restart Windows.

The above may be a quick fix that won't last though?

Have you tried the free "Jet Player" - there's not much it won't play or burn and it will run circles around WMP.

Hope this helps as it seems you have found what others have - (it may be awhile before Microsoft decides to deal with this issue)

I saw some other threads like this, but not the same problem.

My windows media player works fine, it is just when I am trying to play a video in both IE7 and Mozilla Firefox, the Windows media player comes up in the browser with the black box and says "ready" but nothign ever plays. I hit hte play button and it does nothing.

Any ideas?

Hi there rathofman,

this sometimes happens if the server is busy, it may be an idea to completely clear your internet cache, history, cookies etc then go back to the page. If the same happens, click refresh on the toolbar a few times to see if that loads the clip or not.

Does this happen on all sites with video clips or just some?

Are you able to view any content at any of these places:

Hi guys. Having a problem similar to the one the guy had in this thread I found that brought me across your website:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/555493-solved-windows-media-player-not.html

The DVD will play only background noises and sound room special FX but no character dialogue. I'm assuming I'm having a codec problem of my own. The K-Lite pack that someone posted a link to in that thread has not worked for me. Do I need to reboot my PC? Any help would be appreciated!
