Unable to upgrade to Windows 10, v1511, Build 10586

Q: Unable to upgrade to Windows 10, v1511, Build 10586

Hi,
I haveupgrade Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit (English US) to Windows 10 Pro, 64bit also English(US) when I received the Microsoft notification in my HP ENVY 17 laptop, onJuly 29th according to my memory.
The upgradingprocess was without difficulties, like a charm; the laptop continued to worksatisfactorily and I am happy with Windows 10
Since thattime a number of updates were automatically downloaded and installed forWindows, Windows Defender (a lot), Office and two Cumulative Updates: KB3105213and KB3116869.
The laptophas i7, RAM 16GB, HDD 1TB with 750GB of free space.
However inNovember v1511, Build 10586 was not automatically downloaded and obviously notinstalled. So, my current version still is 10.0 Build 10240.
Therefore,I tried to install 10586 manually with an ISO file saved on a DVD and downloadedvia the Media Creation Tool and Tech Bench.
Aftermounting the ISO I tried to install 10586 opening its exe file as Administratorbut installation always stuck at 25%. Similarly with the program downloaded to anUSB and opened via Advanced startup or directly from the USB itself.
As anexternal device I only have an USB Microsoft mouse. I also tried to use the laptoptrackpad instead the mouse but results were the same.
At 25%always appear the same phrase: ?Something happened Windows 10 installation has failed?.
Ialso tried to deactivate both Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, but sameresult.
Both sfc /scannowand dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth commands were and are OK.
I willappreciate your advice and instructions in order to finally install 10586.
Best regards.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What anti-virus are you using? Try uninstalling it. You can reinstall after the upgrade.
Same if you are using a firewall other than the built-in Windows firewall.

Since the beginning of 2016 I have been unable to upgrade ending with constant requests to restart and the failure data as per attachment is the latest.

I did defer this upgrade but recently it has been ignored and the upgrade has been installing and failing again on a regular basis.

I have tried the ISO's and other links to this upgrade and they all finish with a simple statement "Failed". Funnily in Security & Maintenance it shows a failure almost as soon as it starts to download and then about an hour later it says it was a successful update. I expect to see a Windows.old in 'C' drive but there isn't any.

Last night a notification suddenly announced "We are working on it!" - what? Today it did another upgrade download and installation and guess what - failed.

I am under the impression that Microsoft want to get this upgrade going in preparation for the Windows 10 anniversary end July 2016.

I notice in Tiribos's post the instructions for downloading the ISO and mounting etc, but mine downloads as zip file but I suppose it all amounts to the same performance.

What to do?

This forum seems to be the best place to post as there is so much useless crap elsewhere on the internet mostly from a year or more ago.

I have a Toshiba Satellite that was upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I received my invitation from Microsoft to download and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro in early December 2015. I ran the program to verify that my hardware would run Windows 10 Pro x64 and included info about my laptop in my profile.I have run Windows Update Program and receive the message that Windows 10 Pro v1511, 10586 failed with error 80070003 (unknown error). I have tried to upgrade a total of 15 times and from my observations, some installed updates have been uninstalled and will not install again. Case in point, KB890830 Win malicious software removal tool was installed on 17 Nov 2015, but is showing that the update is missing and the update to install it again failed. I also have four (4) other updates that state they failed to install. KB3106614, KB3104002,, KB2901983 and KB3102429. Thanks in advance for your help.

I tried updating normally using Windows Update. It fails in less than 10 seconds.
I tried using Media Creation Tool. It downloads the update, but at the end it fails again and tell me restart my PC and try again.
I tried deleting the files at C:/Windows/SoftawareDistribution/Download and then going back to Windows Update. It didin't work.
I'm desperate to update because this Build is crashing and freezing in almost any game that I play or application that I use. I'm only able to use Chrome and Office properly. Everything else usually freezes and crash.
Any ideas of whatelse I could try ?

A:Unable to update to Build 10586

I'd use the Media Creation tool to download the .ISO, or get the ISO directly from Tech Bench .

Not guaranteed to help, but it may save you from repeatedly downloading multiple gigabytes of installer.

Your existing Windows 10 installation will allow you to mount the .ISO, and you can then run the update directly from that.

10586 is more of an upgrade than an update. If memory serves, it generates the windows.old folder. I recommend imaging the current Win 10 installation before updating.

It's not happy with something it's running into, obviously. Are you trying to go from 10240 to 10586? Don't know what you currently are on. You could spend hours/days fighting the "Upgrade" path, when a clean install will start you fresh. Probably spend less time reinstalling your apps and transferring your data back. Backup first to something external and disconnect it when doing the clean install.

I have a Chuwi Hi8 tablet. Yesterday I upgraded the preinstalled Windows 10 RTM to the latest build 10586.104 and got the well-known Wi-Fi Not Available problem. I tried the recipes from this article and what I found in other Internet resources, but nothing helped. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

P.S. When I open the Device Manager, I see no problems with the installed hardware. Windows reports that all drivers are installed and work correctly. The same concerns the Broadcom 802.11n Wireless SDIO Adapter.

P.P.S. The website of the device (http://en.chuwi.com/product/items/Chuwi-Hi8-pro.html) does not help a lot. They do not provide a driver package I can use to reinstall the drivers. I even can't register on their forum to request the driver pack.

A:Wi-Fi not available problem on tablet after upgrade to W10 build 10586

I've solved this puzzle. When I was searching for a solution a couple of days ago, I saw that reinstalling the Wi-Fi adapter driver helped some people to solve this problem. I had a custom pack of the Chuwi tablet drivers (I had found them earlier on their support forum here: Driver download HI8 PRO - General - Chuwi Forum - Forum.chuwi.com). However, reinstalling the driver did not help me two days ago.

Today I analyzed the installation .inf file for the Wi-FI driver and saw that it should create special registry keys with driver settings, etc. I supposed that the required registry keys were not created when I reinstalled the driver the previous time and I decided to reinstall the driver again - but now checking the option "Delete the driver software for this device" in the "Confirm Device Uninstall" dialog.

And it helped!! The Wi-Fi driver started to work immediately after doing this.

Since I installed Win 10 Build 10240 a few months ago Windows Update has been trying on an almost daily basis to upgrade it to the current Build 10586. While all other updates seem to have installed normally, this one has consistently failed. Yesterday I tried a manual upgrade using a DVD of the downloaded Build 10586. I turned off Windows Defender and Windows Firewall and ran Setup from the DVD as Administrator. But it failed during the initial Installing Windows phase at roughly the 18% mark, leaving what has to be the most useless message Microsoft has ever come up with: "Something happened--Windows 10 installation has failed". I looked at setuperr.log but am not able to decipher what may have happened. I've attached that log; can anyone come up with a reason the installation failed and what I might be able to do about it? (I realize that I could probably do a clean install of Build 10586 but would prefer to do the upgrade if possible.

My Parents figured it was time to upgrade to ten so I made up a disc and upgraded both their computers to 10 build 10586 successfully. I had already had 10, I got new parts so I upgraded via a disk my dad made when 10 first came around, build 10240.

I want to play Forza 6 but unfortunately it isn't supported on my build of Win 10 and security is better on 10586 yada yada yada. I insert the same disk, upgrade begins, it goes through the whole process on the purple screen and when it goes for the first reboot, it boots back up into startup repair asking me to choose keyboard language. I choose a shut down and when the computer boots back up it tells me,

"Installation Failed in Safe_OS Phase With an Error During BOOT Operation 0xC1900101 ? 0x20017"

I have tried many of the suggested fixes, I have:
1. Tried installing with all USB ports vacant
2. Removed my wireless adapter
3. Installed using a clean boot
4. Removed IIS and its associated user
5. Completely uninstalled my antivirus
There may be more but I dont remember

Fresh Install is not an option so please dont suggest it, theres got to be a way around this issue.

I have attached the error log of my latest attempt at upgrading.

I've also heard that downloading the ISO and then modifying some intel file could be a possible fix but Id rather try something that doesn't include modifying the OS, that might bring up a "not genuine" error later as I have heard.happens.

I have Insider Preview 10525 installed on a dual boot system with openSUSE. Windows 10 is activated. However even though I'm on the Fast Ring I haven't gotten any updates or new build for quite awhile. I use WSUS to get security updates.

I downloaded Windows TH2 Build 10568 from the "official" Windows 10 News site (Microsoft - but uses MEGA servers) which posted today.

Windows 10 boots fine but says to install Windows from my installed copy - fair enough.

When I run setup.exe from the DVD I get the helpful message "Something happened" - real informative. After trying several times I get to the license page and skip the updates (this caused the helpful message above. I skipped the product key entry since Windows 10 was installed and activated. Then I get the refallyh bizarre error that the installer cannot determine if I am running Windows 10!

I have almost 97 programs installed and working great so I'm not going to do a clean install. I probably can't return to build 10240 if I use the recovery mode but I'm almost ready to try to revert - if I can - since I have an image created by the AOEMI Backupper program which has restored system backups many times when I or Windows screws up.

Does anybody have any idea how I'll be able to install build 10586 - since apparently the normal Windows 10 update in Settings is not going to work.

This method requires you to have an isodownloaded from Tech Bench.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/techbench

Once you have it downloaded from Tech Bench, right click at it > click Mount> leave it there.
Now go back to your elevated command prompt, at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this command line......................

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:d:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note : d is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation issuccessful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time.

You may have to run the sfc scan a few times for it to fix the files

Hi there,

I was trying to upgrade my Windows 10 build 10240 (RTM) to build 10586 (version 1511) via Windows Update but the Windows Update always gave me this error (see the attached screenshot below). Oddly enough, there was no error code shown and Windows couldn't seem to download the update. I had tried click the retry so many times, but it just couldn't download it.

So, I went download the ISO file and copied the ISO into the USB drives. I ran the setup.exe and it gave me this error: "Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot you PC and try and running Windows 10 setup again."
I rebooted the PC and still I couldn't start the setup.

I read somewhere in the internet that deleting the $Windows.~BT, $Windows.~WS, and also the Windows.old folder will resolve the problem. The latter had been deleted and I tried to delete the $Windows.~BT by using the command prompt (because I can't delete it with File Explorer). Some files were successfully deleted but there is about 4.5 MB left now in that folder. When trying to delete these files, command prompt says that access is denied. If I delete them using File Explorer, it will say that the action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

Do I miss something or is there any solution to this problem? I hope you guys can't help me solve the problem. It's very frustrating.

Thank you

Also note that you should run Windows update to check you are up to date.

I was able to press OK, but then the system is recovering to the old Windows 10 version (build 10240).

Microsoft today released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 PCs and phones, bringing the build number to 10586.494.

KB3172985 is a bit of a mystery at the moment, as Microsoft hasn't published a changelog for either version. Typically, the PC release notes would be published to the Windows 10 Update History page, which isn't currently showing anything new.

The Mobile version is always a bit of a jumble, the release notes sometimes showing up in Microsoft's Answers forum and occasionally, in the Feedback Hub. Perhaps most interesting is that the changelog for phones is almost never available at the time that the update is offered.

The last cumulative update that we saw was 10586.454 in the Release Preview ring. No Release Preview update has ever made it to the Production ring, so the last public update was 10586.420.

It's Patch Tuesday, and you know what that means. It's time for cumulative updates. Today's update is for both Windows 10 PCs and phones, and it brings the build number to 10586.420.

The update is available to both the Production ring and the Release Preview ring, continuing an interesting trend. Since the Release Preview ring was made available back in February, not a single cumulative update has been made available to the ring and later to the Production ring.

For example, builds 10586.242 and 10586.338 were offered up to Release Preview, but they never made it to Production. The updates that do make it to Production show up in the RP ring at the exact same time.

Here's what's new in Windows 10 for PCs build 10586.420:

Improved reliability of Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, Cortana, audio playback, audio playback in Groove Music app, Maps app, Miracast, and Windows Explorer.
Fixed issue with balloon tip notifications always appearing in the upper left side of the screen.
Fixed issue that caused VPN to not work properly when switching between different network interfaces (for example, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular).

I have cleanly installed Windows 10 Pro. I then ran sfc /scannow (elevated command prompt) and I am receiving the usual errors that can't be fixed.
Normally the "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" command resolves this.

Unfortunately I am receiving the now famous "Error 0x800f081f"
I mounted the latest Windows 10 iso to drive "I" and ran the below command to access the install.esd file.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:I:\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

This is not fixing my issue and I am still getting the "Error 0x800f081f". I have installed the latest build twice now and I am having the same result.
Am I doing it wrong and using the wrong commands or is the latest build corrupt?
I don't want to have to revert back to Windows 8.1.

Hi everyone,

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10586 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build is really focused on bug fixes and general improvements. We?ve been loving this build in our internal rings as it is very fast and smooth, and makes a great daily driver.

Here are some things we have fixed:

The issue where any audio playing (like music from Groove, or videos from the Movies & TV app) gets reduced by 75% for a period of time after a notification pops up from Action Center is fixed.
Pressing the power button on your Surface Pro 3 should put your Surface Pro 3 to sleep instead of shutting it down.
We fixed an issue reported by Windows Insiders where a disksnapshot.exe command prompt window would flash randomly.
Windows should now remember your previous login type. For example, if you log in with a PIN ? it will prompt you for a PIN next time instead of another type.
We fixed an issue where Tab previews in Microsoft Edge were appearing as black if the page was not scrolled to the top, and web note clippings were also appearing as black.
Small form-factor devices, like the Dell Venue 8 Pro, that boot with rotation or virtual mode screen size set larger than the physical screen size should no longer experience a bluescreen on upgrade.
Apps and games should download from the Store more reliably.

Hi everyone,

We have another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 which we?re releasing today to Windows Insiders in the Fast and Slow ring.

This build continues to address feedback we?ve received from Windows Insiders as well as customers using our brand new Windows 10 phones like the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. As with the previous release, this Cumulative Update continues to use the minor version for differentiating between each version ? so this build will appear as 10586.36.

With the new 10586 build something has changed where app suggestions remain in the Start Menu even after permanently removing the Windows store/Metro apps via DISM.

Besides taking the easy route and changing this setting in the Settings app (which, if used, will not persist after sysprep), are there any known registry hacks out there since such a setting doesn't exist in Group Policy as it should?

Hi everyone,
Firstly, wish all of you have a nice day!
I'm facing with a problem on Windows 10. When I see video, I open it the first time, no problem is happened. But when I try to open it again, it's opened, but not play, only freezes at the first frame, I can't do anything except restart Windows. I'm using Windows 10 Edu build 10586 and VLC for playing videos. I also tried another player such as Windows default, K-lite. But can't solved. Does anyone have this problem like me?

A:Windows 10 build 10586 Video Playback Issue

Hi @Maxxx58 , in most cases it would be an issue with the graphics driver software. Have you tried with your graphics control panel and reset to default and check? If this doesn't fix, make sure that you are not facing the same problem w.r.t browsers when you play videos. If the issue continues, try to reinstall the graphics driver and check. And even if this doesnt help I recommend you to perform a system restore to a good previous working environment. When you do restore, if you have installed any new applications and if that is not compatible with your system softwares, the software will be removed and there would be a fix right there.

Microsoft today released the first cumulative update for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update since its release a week ago. KB3176495 brings the build number to 14393.51.

As with most cumulative updates, don't expect to see any new features. Instead, it focuses on fixes and improvements.

Here's what's new:

Improved reliability for Internet Explorer 11.
Addressed issue to keep pen click settings after updating to Windows 10 Version 1607.
Addressed issue that may cause Windows 10 Mobile devices to hang after turning Bluetooth on and off very quickly.
Security updates to Kernel Mode Drivers, Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, and Windows Authentication Methods.
Of course, not everyone is on the Anniversary Update yet, and today is Patch Tuesday, so everyone gets a patch. Microsoft also released build 10586.545 (for the November Update, Version 1511) and 10240.17071 (for the original Windows 10 release, 1507).

Here are the improvements in 10586.545:

Improved reliability by allowing more time for devices to recover from connected standby mode.

Hi everyone,
Microsoft's just released major updates for Windows 10 called Fall updates. But I heard that some people (include my friends) having problems with ESET's HIPS feature after update to Windows 10 build 10586. Is there anyone in Malwaretips facing to this problem? I also found a thread complain about this bug on ESET forum
ESET hips and windows build 10586
ESET seems having lots of bugs when released ESET v9. It's not bug-free software company as I respect. So disapointed!
Here is my friend screenshot on Windows 10 TH2:

Ps: I'm using Windows 10 Education so I'm still not received any updates. I can't specify current situation of ESET on my machine

Windows 10 build 10586.71 expected to roll out tomorrow for PCs, and for Insiders on Mobile

Barring any show-stopping bugs, it appears that an update is on the way for the general release of Windows 10, and possibly for Insiders using Windows 10 Mobile. The new updates will bump PCs up over the current 10586.63 build released on January 13, and Mobile devices up from build 10586.63 available to the Insider program. According to Italian website AggiornamentiLumia, which discovered the listing for the update, it will roll out tomorrow, January 26, 2016.

As with other cumulative updates, this one is likely to address issues such as stability and bug fixes, and may also improve battery life on mobile devices. The build will be part of the Threshold (TH2) development branch, and not the Redstone stream; early Redstone builds have only been released to Insiders on PC.

Language packs associated with new Mobile build 10586.71 were spotted by Gustave M (@gus33000), which you can view here.

For those that haven't been upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile yet, you will have to wait a bit longer, as Microsoft has reportedly confirmed to its partners that the rollout won't start until February. The company is also said to have delayed the next firmware updates for its newest flagships, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

So when the th2 update first became available i updated and was getting daily BSODs i went through and checked everything some were saying it was most likely memory corruption. I rolled back to see if it would stop blue screening and it did was stable for a few months. I figured Nvidia or most drivers had to be compatible by now and i wanted some of the bug fixes from 1511 so i updated again using an msdn ISO i had access to. Since then daily Blue Screens are reoccurring, I don't know if i buy that my hardware has gone bad as it's 100% stable under base Windows 10. Any help would be appreciated.

I can add a link to the .dmp file later tonight when i get home but for now I will include the descriptions of the BSOD.

CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION

Ntkrnlmp.exe

I was remoted in from work and ran an SFC /SCANNOW it found nothing then the PC BSODd again so i can't upload the dmp file till tonight.

Hi,

my first post here since i start to be pretty desperate. My Win 10 (version 10.0 Build 10240) has downloaded and installed version 1511, 10586 now already five times. Every time it asks to reboot to finish the upgrade there pops up a window in the lower right corner that says "We couldn't finish installing updates - Select this message to learn more". When i select it, I'm taken to the Update section where it says my computer is up to date. And when i check for updates it always finds the update version 1511, 10586 again. And prepares to install, and starts to download (takes for ages), and actually installs. And then again asks to reboot. And fails.

I hope there would be some solution to this, I upgraded from Win7 and this has been working until now. I REALLY hope I don't have to go back to Win7 and lose tons of installed programs. Any help appreciated.

A:Fails to Upgrade to Windows 10 v.1511, 10586 (Nov.update)!

You have been using Windows Update to install 10586.

How about download Media Creation Tool or Tech Bench and do the install ?

Media Creation Tool (MCT)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Tech Bench
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench

Let's use MCT as an example.
Download the Tool and run it > you can either
1. select Upgrade this PC now which will begin installation.
or
2. select Create Installation media for another PC which will begin downloading the iso file to your computer.
After iso file is downloaded, right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe > installation will begin.

In both methods, you can keep you settings, files and apps.
No product key is required.
Activation is automatic.

Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586 will not download and install. However the updater keeps telling me it is ready for installation, then is decides on it's own to restart any damn time it wants to. For a while, I had control over this. Then, like a dummy, I decided to see if there were any updates. MS snuck a piece of software in during the look see, and now it's back to doing what it wants. I'm developing an irrational hatred for Windows 10

I would like to know how I can take absolute control of my Windows Updater. Furthermore, I'd like to force this update to download and control whether it is installed or not. I don't seem to be able to get any information on it. Is it even necessary?

If someone can help I would really appreciate it. TIA andythebeagle
