L440 Touchpad stops working

Q: L440 Touchpad stops working

Dear all, since almost 2 years I am pretty happy with my L440.But lately, I often have problems with the touchpad becaue it suddenly stops working,no mouse moving, no touchpad-based clicking. The trackpointer still works and also the hardware buttons for left and right clicking are still working. However, depending on the task i prefer either trackpad or touchpad. I already changed the sensitivity for palm checking but no effect. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: L440 Touchpad stops working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have had my Dell Inspiron 7559 for about a week now, it runs windows 10. Over the past few days the trackpad has started to not work. At first the single tap (left click) didn't work. But the left click button worked fine and the two tap (right click) worked fine too. I restarted it, single tap works again.
This happened a couple more times and I decided to investigate. There was no touchpad on my mouse settings, only a HID-compliant mouse and a PS/2 Compatible Mouse. I don't have any mice. I did a driver update for both of the above and ELAN input device showed up. I did a driver update for it and it worked ok for a couple of hours and it said it is working properly. However if stopped working again and I went back to the settings and whilst windows 10 settings said the trackpad was on, the ELAN tab on the mouse properties said that the Elan smart-pad was not enabled it and restarted. When I went back to the same settings after the restart, it was not enabled again. So I enabled it. Two hours later, the trackpad was back to not registering single taps. Enabling and disabling the ELAN trackpad appears to do nothing.
The next day, single tap stopped working and then all the buttons and taps stopped working but scroll/zoom etc still worked. I restarted and it worked again. Later on it had the issue that the trackpad would only select things on the start bar. Once you opened something you couldn't click at all. Again I restarted and it "fixed"... Read more

I bought a brand new laptop from Dell.  The touchpad kept crashing.  After several months of calling tech support, having the laptop serviced remotely, and sending it in twice for repairs, all without success, Dell sent me a new computer.  After only three days, the same thing is now happening with the new one.
These were both brand new computers with the exact same issue.  Is Dell simply incapable of making a decent computer any more?  I used to love Dell; this was my fifth Dell computer, but maybe it's time to look elsewhere.

The tap to click function on my touch pad will stop working randomly and start dragging the item around instead. Will then have to fully click down on the touch pad to navigate between tabs etc. The scroll function also stops at random, but after restart it all returns to normal until the next time it stops working. Anyone had this problem and know how to fix it?

Hi, On my Travelmate B115 (that I've barely used at all), the touchpad randomly stops working. If I deactivate it and activate it (Fn+F7 twice) it starts working again, but I have to do that once every two minutes, and it's really annoying. Sometimes it also is very slow or imprecise in its movements, and it seems sometimes that it clicks without my wanting it to (it could be that I'm grazing the pad without noticing sometimes, but I'm really writing "in the air" with only my fingers touching the computer's keys now to avoid it, and it still happens).I am extremely frustrated since this laptop is brand new. Can anyone help me?Elisabeth

Exactly the same problem. Just emailed Acer and told me to reset the laptop. I did it and the same problem. Now, directly they don't answer my email.

Hey guys.

I have never had this problem before so I don't know what to do.

While on my laptop my touchpad will randomly stop moving. I can still zoom in and out by pinching, I can right click and left click, but I cannot move the pointer . As soon as I plug in my mouse, the touchpad works again. I can unplug the mouse and it will still work for a few minutes then the problem will happen again.

I'm running windows 7 64bit,

I also have not installed anything recently.

See if reinstalling the touchpad driver from the laptop's manufacturer's website helps.

I bought a brand new laptop from Dell.  The touchpad kept crashing (it won't respond to taps and sometimes stops scrolling, but the right and left click continue to work).  After several months of calling tech support, having the laptop serviced remotely, and sending it in twice for repairs, all without success, Dell sent me a new computer.  After only four days, the same thing is now happening with the new one.  Now Dell says that means the problem is on my end.
I haven't downloaded any new programs, everything is up-to-date, and when I check the touchpad settings, it shows everything as being enabled.  The touchpad stops working randomly, on different websites and in different programs.  I never had this problem on any previous Dell laptops.  I can't think what I might be doing to cause this issue.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hello. My month old E560 has been great until recently, when the touchpad has decided to play up on me.What happens after a while of use, the touchpad will begin not responding to my gestures, finger movements, sliding, etc. It will sporadically work for maybe a fraction of a second after, but 99% of the time when I frantically draw circles with my finger it will not respond. This proves it is NOT the touchpad completely disabling/turning off, etc. There are no issues with the trackpoint or any hardware buttons. Even right clicking with the touchpad does what it's supposed to.  This is on the most up to date version of ALP Lenovo Ultranav drivers for the e560 from the Lenovo website. I have found that uninstalling this driver (and thus using Windows' default touchpad driver) prevents Lenovo-specific multitouch features such as twofinger scrolling, and also slightly changes what the middleclick does, but at least prevents the issue of an unresponsive touchpad which is the most important feature. Usually, a quick restart solves this issue. But after the computers shut down and started up again after a while of being off, the issue will occur again. I am running Windows 10 home 64 bit with, as said, the most recent Lenovo-issued ALPS Ultranav driver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now that the video flickering issue has been resolved, I am now frequently encountering a very frustrating problem with my new XPS 13 (9343).   If I stop using the touchpad for a few minutes (not sure how many, sometimes it's 1 or 2, sometimes its 30), then mouse pointer disappears completely and the touchpad does not respond.  I can click, swipe, tap, etc. but there is no pointer.  When it happens I am forced to use the touch screen to shut down the machine and restart it so I can get the touchpad and pointer to work again.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

A:XPS 13 (9343) Touchpad stops working

I have the same problem. I am using Windows 10 Pro. I have tried every touchpad driver version I could find with no luck. I am currently using this driver: Cypress Semiconductor, Inc, dated 6/24/2015, version
I often find it happening when playing a youtube video or something like that, but that's probably just because I don't use the trackpad for a few minutes while watching the video.
When it happens the mouse pointer is either completely gone, or it is "frozen" in some random position on the screen and the trackpad is not moving it. It happens once or twice a day for me, and I then restart the PC to fix - annoying.
I feel 99% certain that it is a driver issue - and that no driver has been created for the Cypress Trackpad in the PC that actually works in Windows 10. If anybody know of a driver that actually works I'd love to get the details.

I have an Acer Aspire One D250 with a synaptics touchpad bought on March 20th which hasn't given me any problems till 3 days ago.

Friday, when I turned the computer on, the touchpad wasn't working. I tried Fn+F7 and nothing. The usual synaptics animated icon wasn't beside the clock. I went to the control panel>mouse>device settings and no device was listed there, while all the options were greyed out. I went to system>device manager and no "Mouse and other pointing devices" was listed. I went to Acer.pt (I'm from portugal) and downloaded the driver and installed it. The instalation went without problems and when I restarted the computer, the touchpad was still not working and nothing was listed on the device manager.

I called the Acer support line and the told me to restore the OS. I spent friday doing backups and I reinstalled Windows XP from Acer eRecovery Management. After all that, the touchpad wasn't working still.

Saturday was spent going to the store where I bought the netbook and trying to find a solution. Just as when I was going to give the netbook to warranty, a guy turned the computer on and the touchpad was magically working again.

I went home, all happy and warm and fuzzy inside.

Today, when I was copying my backups to the netbook again, I hit "cancel", and the icon next to the clock disappered and the touchpad stoped working again. Went to check, and nothing was listed on the device manager or on contro... Read more

If the Acer Factory Restore failed to fix it and it intermittently comes and goes its likely a hardware issue. I'd be contacting Acer again and sending the unit in for warranty service.

In the beginning of this week I bought Toshiba satellite Z30-A-1D0.

My touchpad seemed fine but once in a while the cursor stops working for about 1 minute. I can use the left and right button of the touchpad but I just can't move the cursor.

First I thought that I accidentally had locked the touchpad so I pressed Fn+F9 and the light turned on meaning that the touchpad was locked, then I pressed it again and the cursor was still not moving, it only starts almost a minute after... I've tried to be at alert to what I'm doing in the touchpad but it happens when i'm just moving the cursor.

This happens about 4 times a day and the fisrt time it happened was on the day I bought. And I never used a USB mouse in this computer.

Thanks for your atention to my problem and hope you can help me.

It is not easy to say why this happen.
If possible try to use external mouse. It will be interesting to know if there is some general problem with mouse or just with internal touchpad.

I currently have a HP pavilion tx2520ae laptop and now and again whilst im am working on it i suddenly get the message 'synaptics touchpad has stopped working with two options saying : close and check for a problem online and close', after this message appears the touchpad still works, however the scroll bar for the laptop does not, this is an inconvenience as i do alot of my school portfolios on my laptop, some of which are nearly 100 pages long and i am constantly editing it, so i need the scroll bar to save me time and effort.

When i restart the laptop however this problem is corrected, but after a while it appears again and constantly restarting the laptop every 10 minutes is just too much effort to waste on fixing a simple scroll bar.

When the message appeared, I had tried to go onto the mouse options on the control pannel and i got an error message saying 'unable to connect to the synaptics pointing device driver. if you have installed another PS/2 pointing driver please unistall the synaptics driver by clicking on the yes button. you then need to reinstall your pointing divce driver for your external device again.
Do you want to unistall the synaptics driver now?'

HI All I am in need of help please i have a X1 Carbon that was Recently purchased for a user at our office. But as you can tell from the subject of this topic the touchpad and trackpad stops working working after a few minutes of working on the machine.  I used Lenovo System Update to update all the drivers to the latest version and this was not successfull, I then tried a reinstall  of windows and the manually downloaded the driver from lenovo website and installed it but still no luck. I have checked and they are not disabled in the Bios and they are not and the Bios is on the latest version I have also tried to let it run on the windows driver that downloads from windows but also it stops working. from what it looks like the trackpoint and touchpad disable cause when i go into the mouse properties the option to enable them both is greyed out i then log on as the local admin to see if it is a permission thing but it is also greyed out. This happens regardless if the machine is on battery or plugged inThis user travels  alot and needs them both to be working.  I came across the below forum but i dont see much of a response from lenovo.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-touchpad-and-trackpad-stops-working...

I have a Dell Latitude E5470 on Windows 10 Enterprise, running the most up to date BIOs, chipset, touchpad driver, and display driver.
I am running into an issue that whenever a video, be it streamed or saved locally, begins to play, the touchpad no longer responds. The icon in the bottom right tray will not show any input, be it clicking or trying to move the mouse, and the mouse will not move, or allow clicks to register. Once the video is exited out, the touchpad resumes functionality. An external mouse and the Pointstick will continue to work during videos.
Has anyone else ever experienced this before, and if so, was there a fix?

So since I have the T490 (around 4 weeks) the touchpad randomly stops working in the middle so the cursor won't move anymore for like 20 seconds and then it goes back to normal. The edges are not affected by this, just the middle the touchpad seems temporarly dead.I found out by disabling palm rejection in the synaptics settings this problem goes completely away, but then I'd rather use the trackpoint since typing without palm rejection is extremly annoying. So what I already did is reinstalling the driver - did not fix it. Also a clean install of Windows didn't do anything. But what I noticed while reinstalling Windows was, that even in the installation process with the media creation tool, the touchpad had this not responding problem. So this is not a driver problem since even the standard windows touchpad driver had the same problem?Anything else I could try? Or is this a hardware problem? In the german version of this forum there are several others with seems like the same problem.

I'm working out of a computer repair shop and we've got an L450 that randomly stops receiving any input from the touchpad.  It seems to particularly happen when you try to do anything "complicated" such as move the mouse as press in the trackpad at the same time, or double tap the trackpad to move something. The only way to have it start working again is shutting down and restarting the notebook completely. We've replaced both the trackpad and the motherboard, and it still happens. So it's definitely a software-side issue. It happens on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, on both the drivers available from the product page and the newer drivers found through having Windows search for driver updates available online. After some research, I'm seeing that Lenovo notebooks seem to be a fairly common problem across many models spanning the last 5 years or so. Anyone got any ideas? The notebook is sadly 1 month out of warranty, so sending it in is no longer an option.

another things is that most buttons do that, but for example the ctrl, function, alt and windows keys don't cause this problem.

Any Idea what can cause this? and do you know any solutions please??

Hi all, I have a very strange error that I can't figure out. As the title says, several times throughout the day my mouse pointer will change to a pointer with attached scroll bar (see image). At the same time the trackpad stops working.I have already tried performing a clean install of Windows 10 1909 and I'll run all the Windows Updates and Think System Updates.  One time this happened I rebooted and I got an error2102: Detection error on SSD (HDD) I had an old Crucial MX100 in the laptop so I swapped it for a slightly newer MX300 that I had sitting nearby.  Another fresh install, updates, etc. and as I was installing other software for the PC it happened again. I don't it was HDD related, I think that was just a fluke, part of me thinks it could be a faulty trackpad, because it doesn't seem to be software related since I've reinstalled Windows twice now. Anyway, has this ever happened to anyone?  Do you think my diagnosis of a bad touchpad is correct?

Hi, occasionally my touchpad will become less responsive. It will only move a couple of inches and stop no matter how much I move my finger and I"ll have to lift my finger and put it back on and it will move a couple of more inches. After a minute of this it will stop responding entirely.
My computer and keyboard is still responding. I can alt tab around and restart with keyboard commands. It's just the touchpad.
If I reset the touchpad will work normally for a while, sometimes a week and sometimes for only a few minutes and it will stop working again.
Here's what I've tried to fix it.
Enable and disabling touchpad
Try to update driver from device manager
A factory reset of the OS.
So far the problem still persists. Have any of you encountered this and have found a fix?
I use this laptop for work on occasion and it's a major bummer and interrupts my work.
There's still warranty  left, can I submit this problem and get it fixed potentially?

Hi chekhonte,
I?d suggest that you update BIOS on your computer to check for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.
Also, I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the touchpad drivers usineg the steps provided below.
1. Click on Start button.
2. In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
3. Select the touchpad device under Mice and other pointing devices and right click on it
4. Now select properties.
5. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
6. Check ?Delete the driver software for this device.?
7. You want to delete the driver click OK.
Please reinstall the touchpad driver

I wish to obtain definitive information about the internal composition of the trackpad for the L440 laptop given my allergy to wool felt. Does the trackpad use any felt cushioning or gaskets? I recently noticed what appears to be small particles of lint around the crevices of the trackpad, but before cleaning the periphery of the pad I wish to be certain that these particles are not from underlying felt material. I would hope to obtain an answer directly from Lenovo. Thank you.

Brand new laptop running windows 8.1 Touchpad works for about 30 seconds after windows boots up then stops. Tried downloading latest drivers from Toshiba site but it didn't fix the problem. Tried the touchpad function keys but that is not the issue. Called Toshiba support and they suggested sending it in for a factory reset.

I also have a problem with AMD graphics going split screen after computer goes into a sleep state. Downloaded and installed latest drivers for this on advice of Tech support but not fixed either.

I'm a bit concerned as a search shows both these problems not uncommon and iv'e spent a lot of time copying over data and installing software, don't want to lose it and lose time waiting for factory reset if I have to send ot back.

Anyone have any ideas?

This computer is only 2 weeks old.

I have been to download site and updated all drivers and updates.
The computer works perfectly except for this problem.

When the tablet is asleep the white led is blinking, and when it is all works ok, but if the light for some reason is not blinking but permanently lit then it will not restart and I have to re-boot the tablet.

I have disabled the hibernation mode in options but still no help.

Any help would be appreciated.

I?m wondering if the option (within the BIOS) called Wake-Up on Keyboard is enabled.
To restore the operation of the computer from sleep mode, press the power button or any key on the keyboard dock for a short amount of time. But the keyboard keys can only be used if the mentioned option is enabled.

Note: when the notebook is in Sleep Mode, the power indicator will blink white. If the power indicator does not blink white, the notebook isn?t set to sleep mode!

For the past 3 months or so, this has occured around 4 times. The touchpad lags and then the mouse disappears all together and I cant move it or click on anything, I resort to using my touch screen or an external mouse. I tried so many solutions online but none of them worked. The touchpad would fix itself and the mouse would appear everytime for no logical reason. I dont think it can be a hardware problem if it fixes itself and is good as new everytime, right?  Coincidentally, my hard disk stopped working and I just replaced it. So the windows was reset. The mouse was back and then it just disappeared again a few hours later.I cant seem to find a driver for my laptop. Here is the link for its drivers (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/eg/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-720-15ikb/80x7/80x...) and the only driver under "Mouse, Pen, and Keyboard" is the active pen driver. Any solutions for this?

Thus far I failed to identify the circumstances in which the touchpad stops working. It seems to sometimes happen when it checks for an update. What is also curious that the cursor will sometimes mess up such that the text cursor will be displayed as the context menu cursor. Not sure if this is related. The touchpad works again after restart. Everything is up-to-date, running Windows 10 (1909). The TrackPoint is unaffected by this.

The subject really says it all. I'll be using my laptop in the morning before work, and when I attempt to use it later in the day after starting it back up, the mouse cursor is missing and touchpad does not work. During this time, my USB mouse works fine. Then, if I run windows update, and then restart, the touchpad is fully functional again. I've attempted updating all software/hardware with no improvement. Hopefully someone can help, because it is one of the more annoying computer issues I've ever faced.

My pc specs:
IBuyPower computer custom built
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
Amd fx 6core processor
Graphics Amd Radeon Hd 6670 xlr8 edition
8gb ram / 1tb hdd
AsRock motherboard
Antivirus Panda cloud and Avast antivirus.
My usual browser is google chrome but lately (exactly a week ago) the Internet stopped working after a while.
The Internet service stops working as if someone just unpluged my ethernet cable.
And minutes or seconds after that, my windows explorer stops working, taskbar and the entire system stops working.
I can still change windows with the keyboard shortcut but nothing else from there.
The ohly way my Internet and pc works fine is by safe mode with networking.

I already tried to search for viruses or malware by cmd with the "-r -h -s" and the "/scannow" methods but nothing.
Already searched for viruses with boith of my antiviruses (panda and avast).
I have no saved point to reboot my system to a past saved poiht (the last saved point is the same day that my pc stopped working).

Long ago I disconnected the side panel from the pc box which includes a fan and lately my pc temp have raised up to 50 when before it was around the 30's or 40's.
The days this problem started I wasn't home and a blackout happened while my pc was still on.

I recently started getting very annoying problem. Firefox or other program stops responding and alt+ctrl+del stops working at the same time so I have to reboot. It happens quite often.

What I did already:
*Maybe virus? Full boot time system scan with Avast anti-virus. Nothing found.
*Oh well reinstall windows again... Yes, I did that too. Still same problem BUT ONLY after small break like two days or so.
And most confusing thing is that full screen programs like games do not seem to stop responding. Still, they BSOD like after few hours, but I do not think it is related. Like heavy load or something.

My system details hopefully in my forum profile, at least filled them recently.

So any other ideas how I can fix that?

I use mouse usually so didn't realize this problem until I take the laptop out for work today. I have uninstalled and installed the latest touchpad driver, but it did not work. I cannot even see the touchpad device in the "device manager" or a touchpad option in "setting" Below are two screenshots. Any idea what's going on and how I should solve this problem? Many thanks!!!!
