Preferred Solution: Weird "can't find file" message on startup, viruses not deleting or healing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Update: I was able to figure out a hack to get through. If I enable the UAC, and then explicitly run each program with admin rights, it asks for permission, then the programs run without a hitch.

So... Since I hate UAC, how do I fix this?

When I try to run any item in my start menu (or Windows > Start Menu > Programs), I get a "Do you want to open this file?" warning for the .lnk. There is no option to check "always open for this type of file." This also happens on startup, for each item in Windows > Start Menu.

Items pinned to the task bar, or shortcuts in any other place, do not have this problem.

I have my UAC slider set to the lowest setting. I have Home Premium, so there is no gpedit.msc.

Any advice would be appreciated...

I have had this problem numerous times in the past where the installation proceeds then ends with the messages:

During the installation of the device.
The system cannot find the file specified
and it goes into a detection loop

HERE is the solution:

Windows 2000/XP has a bug that it cannot properly detect new hardware by *.inf files, if the RunOnce registry key is missing for the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

This key is often used by installers to execute post-reboot programs, but sometimes they accidentally delete this key.

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Make sure that you understand how to backup and restore the registry, in case a problem occurs. Please read the linked Microsoft Knowledge Base article prior to editing the registry.
Go to Start Run and enter "regedit."

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

With CurrentVersion Highlighted, go to the Edit menu and select New Key

Name the key RunOnce, leaving everything else about the key alone.

The RunOnce key should now exist underneath the CurrentVersion key.
Once the key exists, Windows 2000/XP stops redetecting the Hardware

Hello. =)

The computer I'm using (an HP Pavillion a1101n, with Windows XP) is a family computer that anyone in my home can access.

For the past few days, I've been doing a sort of "spring cleaning" with the computer, and I just started sorting through our Firefox/Internet Explorer bookmarks. I noticed a site called KeyGen.nl was bookmarked, and I clicked it to see what it was...

Firefox (the browser I was using at the time) froze up, but I wasn't too alarmed because it does that often, especially if a site has a lot of graphic-heavy ads. But after a few minutes, it seemed like the whole computer was going slower than normal. I even got a Windows Virtual Memory warning, and that's when I knew something was wrong.

I tried running Ad-Aware immediately, but the system was so slow I had no choice but to (manually, and quickly) restart it. Here's what happened after I restarted it:
I immediately ran Ad-Aware.
I removed every cookie Ad-Aware displayed (which was 119!).
Ad-Aware also pointed out two pieces of Malware; one was called C:\Windows\browser.exe. The other was AT&T Yahoo.lnk (I use AOL Highspeed Internet). I let Ad-Aware remove both items.
In Ad-Aware's Quarantine section, I noticed some very long code (which I can't remember), but two of the files ended with browser.hijack. So I removed these files as well. (Should I have left them in Quarantine instead, or did i... Read more

Do not attempt to run or install the antispyware 2009 (I believe that is the software it tells you to use) as it is a malware.

Windows 7 (64bit) used to load the Network "dialer" (I have DSL) at bootup or whenever a connection was not present, but a few days ago, it suddenly stopped. I must now start my Internet connection manually via a shortcut on the desktop.

I don't prompt for a password, but I don't want my PC connecting w/o me for security reasons (eg: catching viruses/adware that try connect to the Net to upload my info or send Spam.) This is how I've connected since Win98.

I thought maybe I had disabled something necessary from "msconfig", but I put everything back and it still doesn't work.

I've also tried putting the shortcut in my Startup folder, but Windows just ignores it. (???)

I remember having this same problem years ago with XP but forgot how I fixed it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi TimFF,
This might be related with the UAC settings, check this thread:

The steps in the above thread is not recommended.
For the short name usage, we may consider to create a directory-junction from
PROGRA~1 to C:\Program Files:
With the following commands:

Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7?  Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"?
The usual response is, "You need to run regedit as an administrator".  but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!!
Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user?
So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again.  It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key".

The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI    ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!...

Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not!  So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key!  Why, Microsoft, why???!!!  Please just make the Administrator accoun... Read more

What program are you trying to install?

Also, you're running XP ... DO you have Service Pack 2 installed? Are all updates/patches from Microsoft installed?

And that same message is? And the glitches are?
Unplug then reseat your graphics card... While you are at it, write down all the info on the card.
Then go to www.belarc.com, to download and install the latest Belarc Advisor. Then run it to get a report on what it detects.
Now at boot up, check your BIOS to see what it reports for Video Graphics. Also go to Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager to see what the Device Manager reports as detected... and note whether there aae any yellow or red flags.
Download the drivers from ATI or your computer manufacturer for that detected device, then remove or disable the drives you find, and install the newly downloaded ones.

Hi, TSG Masters.

I recently inherited a laptop from a colleague who left (OS is Win XP, SP2 installed). Unfortunately, I believe it was infected by the "autorun.vbs" trojan. Everytime I double-click on the mounted hard drives, a new window will open. And when I right-click on them, garbage messages appear instead of the "Open" and "Explore" options.

Avast! was the previously installed anti-virus program, but I replaced this with F-Secure. A recent scan was able to delete the trojan, but now, I can't get rid of the "Can not find script "c:\autorun.vbs"" message everytime I double click on my drives. And the garbage texts are still there where I right click.

I plan to transfer my important files from my desktop to this laptop (via external hard disk), but I'm afraid it might get infected while the laptop isn't completely "clean".

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, alejandr0

If you have a USB Flash drive, make sure you have it plugged in.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,autorun.bat

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Download the enclosed folder. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Batch file, Autorunsquery.bat. Once extracted, open the folder and double click on the Autorunsquery.bat to run the file.

Hopefully, It will produce one file, Report.txt.
Please post the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.

When you create several files in a word processor or spreadsheet or other program, the program will list the files you recently created the next time you start it, down toward the bottom of the File button on the menu. How do you clear the list of recent files? My wife is copying some old audio cassettes to CD. When she is done with each cassette, she deletes the files from the computer but they still show up on the files menu. This bothers the heck out of her so she is bothering the heck out of me to get rid of the file listing. Any ideas?

I have a fully patched windows 7 SP1 workstation on a domain.  I am a domain admin for that domain.  When I try to run any application that requires elevation I receive a message that says: "Windows cannot find c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
Make sure you have typed the name correctly, and then try again."
This is the second Win7 workstation to have this problem. We simply re installed the OS on the first but I am afraid that this behavior is contagious and will start happening to other workstations.
I am looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot the problem.  We can remotely connect to the workstation to view event logs and get remote RSOP information.  However, elevating anything locally is not working.
I am open to any ideas on how to fix this.  Thanks!

Moving from Vista to Win7, I opted to continue use of Winmail. Found instructions on how to install somewhere (I don't remember if they came from here or not), but all went well and was working fine for a few months. Suddenly, searching for e-mails from certain people or addresses was not finding anything, but searches for other people or addresses worked fine. New e-mails from the same people or address are found okay (i.e., search for emails from Susie but nothing is found, but emails from Susie after the problem arose are found). I can't seem to find a solution and don't know what caused the problem. The emails (returning to the example from Suzy) are there, just can't be found from the find function like they are invisible or hidden. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help and sorry if I am unable to make myself clear.

Hi Guys,
Just joined this forum, but I admit I am not very technically minded, but I hope someone can help.

I recently had a virus which ersased my desktop. A friend helped get that back. I had IE and Firefox installed but they started conflicting with each other, then I couldn't click on any link or open a webpage without the message - Application Not Found. Even when I tried to open My Documents from the programs menu I got a message saying- This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. I also got this message when I tried to access the Control Panel.
I read elsewhere that using System Restore will help, I tried it but now when I try to click on any link it says - Windows Cannot Find (Null). Make sure you typed the name correctly, etc.
I found elswhere on this forum a link to downloading a fresh version of IE 7, but it's a link, so it won't work.
I have just deleted Firefox.

Hope someone can be of help,
Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

I am new here. I tried to find this info, but can't find specific to my question. In just the last few days, I started getting a popup that says, "Pokki Updated"; "Pokki was updated to the latest version. The Pokki update includes bug fixes, improved performance and stability, and enhanced security." When I click on the red "x", another small box pops up and asks if I would like to update now or later. I can't get rid of it unless I click "later", but I don't want it at all. I did, just now, get the window closed, only because it was not responding when I tried to click on it and it closed itself. In any case, I read online to uninstall, but when I go to my apps, it's not listed in order for me to remove. If it's listed under another name, I don't know what that is. I just want to get rid of this thing. Can someone please help? Thanks!

A:XP cant find "UXTheme.dll" screen stays on wallpaper, no startup menu pls help!

Welcome to TSG AndrePalo

Your problem is probably caused by one of the following reasons:

>> You corrupted the file by installing the preferred theme incomplete/ incorrectly.
>> You ignored the Microsoft's warning that should have come if you were trying to install a theme that was not signed by Microsoft.
>> The installed theme does not correctly recognize the modified UXTheme.dll or somehow, it got deleted/ modified.

I did a little research on the topic and came up with one solution. See if it helps:

Hope that helps. Good Luck.

Hi everyone,

I'm on a Win2K network, and we have an old folder that contains archival files and folders from some old Mac computers that we used to use. I'm trying to archive that folder onto a CD, but most of the burner programs I've used (Nero, etc.) won't do this, because there are lots of file and folder names with strange special characters in them. I'm assuming this is because these came from Mac filesystems. Is there a way to get rid of all these characters in a batch or global way, a program I can use??

Thanks in advance for your help!

RELEVANCY SCORE 81.6

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:
icmtr.dll
icthis
isfmdl.dll
isfmm
isfmntr

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:
turbosearchsite.dll e404 Module

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

ever since i (partially) installed an Audigy sound card, i get a message that reads "No drive attached to FasTrak controller, the BIOS is not installed" every time i boot up. this is annoying, but not too annoying, because it is only ther for about 2 seconds.

far more annoying is that ever since i upgraded Netscape 7.0 to 7.1, the Program Files folder opens up at startup. what makes it annoying is that i have to close it each and every time i boot up.

any help with stopping either of these unwanted occurrences would be much appreciated.

I have a DELL XPS-27 All-in-One desktop purchased in Aug 2015. System info is shown below. Starting a few weeks ago an error message appears when device is powered on: "No bootable drive. Press F1 to retry or F2 to enter setup."
I then press F1 and startup continues and device operates fine, however I am concerned that something needs repair.
I ran the diagnostics app on the www.dell.com site and the report (14 pages) is attached. The CMOS, CPU and hard drive passed all tests.
Any suggestions?

Hi guys,

I'm very new to forums and not very good with pc technical stuff so hoping you guys out there can throw me a rope !

All of a sudden, my pc now has this small message box load when it gets to the desktop which says

"The path is not of a legal form."

I have searched everywhere on the net to find something that might be able to help diagnose what is causing this but to no avail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am using Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.

A:Windows 7 Startup Message "The path is not of a legal form."

Hi Icey............

It means that something on your computer is misconfigured.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you what because it really depends on where the message is coming from (which is often in the title bar of the message box) or on the actual path that it's complaining about. For example, it may very included the path (that it says is not of a legal form) in the message that complains of the path not being of a legal form.

What does it mean?

So, I can't really answer to where it's coming from or even what to do about it. But I can at least talk a little bit about what it means for a path to be of a legal form.

A "path," first of all, is the string that identifies where on your computer a file lives.

For example, if you have a file in a folder called My Documents at the root of your C drive and the document's name is "document.doc," then the full path for that would be C:/MyDocuments/document.doc.

That gives every bit of information to locate that file on your hard disk:

C: is the drive.
My Documents is the folder.
Document.doc is the file.
That's a path.

Legal forms

Now, that of course (what I just described) has what I consider to be "a legal form."

The problem is that there are characters that are not allowed to be used in file names and in folder names or they are more difficult to use in file names and folder names and, if used improperly, will cause this kind of message.

For example, you would be hard pressed to create a fil... Read more
