I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A really strange behavour happens on my E460: when I use touchpad to left click on a file, it becomes a mouse hold, which means if I move the mouse pointer at this moment, the file is dragged. I can only release the mouse hold by doing a mouse click again. It really makes a lot of trouble as it causes me to accidentally drag some files. Also, when I am using excel, when I click on a cell, due to the mouse click becomes a mouse hold, so when I move the mouse pointer, it begins to highlight a range of cells. I tried to updated the BIOS, and also update to the latest touchpad driver, but none of them solve the problem. I can only solve the problem by removing the touchpad driver, but this cause all the useful features (e.g. scrolling by using 2 fingers) disappear. Also, it causes another problem. When I'm using excel, I can't double click a cell to edit the text inside. I need to triple click to edit, which is very strange. So removing the touchpad driver can solve one problem but bringing two other problems........ Anyone had such kind of issues too? Any way to solve it? Thanks.

Sony laptop VGN S270P w/XP SP2/2600. 1gb RAM.

In ANY application clicking the left mouse button on any choice, for instance, the Start menu, will not hold or stay chosen. I usually have to resort to holding the button down or multiple attempts of clicking or some chicanery. Right button works fine. This happens across all different brands of mice and on the built in mouse pad, or either USB port or the built-in Bluetooth. I have tried every conceivable permutation of settings via Control Panel-still no change in this defect. I have erased all the USB choices in Device Manager and rebooted so they would reload per Microsoft's procedure. No fix. My drivers seem to be the latest versions of Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0.

I can forward a MSINFO report if necessary.

Whether it's a new spreadsheet, or an existing one, when you click anywhere on the sheet, it acts like your clicking down the left mouse button and dragging. All cells within the movement of the mouse are being selected.

I'm wondering it it's possible to use the functionalities of tablet PCs (the Tablet PC Input Panel to write and holding a left click to right click) in a non-tablet PC.

I know, it doesn't sound practical, but my Genius tablet doesn't have an option to use the Tablet PC feature, so I want to know if there's a way to "force" Tablet PC (or a third party program that lets me use the "hold the left click to right click" feature of Tablet PC), even if Windows sees my tablet as just a mouse and not a Tablet PC compatible tablet.

What I mean is that let's say I am trying to hold and drag a desktop file it will sometimes just click, making me drop the file on the spot. It will also double click when I try to make a single click. I tried to lower the settings for double click timing on the settings menu.

EDIT: Tried out another mouse, it doesn't click out of nowhere but is there a way to fix my old mouse? I can switch the buttons so right click acts as left click so it seems that specific button got practically destroyed

A:Mouse double clicks when I click once and click when I hold it.

Do you mean the other mouse works fine? As far as I know there's no way to fix a mouse other than making sure the trackball or optical lens is clean, whichever your has.

A repair would cost more than a new mouse I suspect. You can get an ordinary one for about $5 or so.

I have a customer who swears up and down that 30% of the time during the day when he is working, the left click function of his mouse does not work. To make this even stranger, it only occurs in the upper right hand corner of the screen when trying to close applications or minimize.

I have not been able to reliably duplicate (although I have had it happen to me), but I do not sit in front of the computer all day either.

He has a Logitech wireless mouse (which I have updated the drivers for). We also tried new batteries.

At this time we are trying a standard corded Microsoft Mouse to see if that solves his issue. I will post back in a few days if that resolves the issue.

Has anyone else ever heard of this issue, have a solution?

I told him to drink after work, not before.... not sure if that will help or not .

Any input would be appreciated.

I am after some help. My laptop has decided to reverse the right click and left click functions, ie: if I left click it now does not select but instead brings up a menu (which the right click button should and used to do!) I've tried holding down both buttons (as suggested by a friend) by this has no effect and I can't see any options to reverse the functions in the 'mouse properties' menu... and ideas please!

I have a DELL Dimension 3000 Series Computer with Windows XP - Service Pack 2; it uses a 2-button DELL scroll mouse. The computer and all peripheries are 2 1/2 years old.

Sometimes, when I am inputting data in a Word document or an EXCEL table, when I click on the left button, a series of dashes (--------) or asterisks (********) keep on typing and the only way to stop the action is to hit the space bar or another key! Most of the times I need to close the file QUICKLY; then, I am able to access it later on without the same problem sometimes in the same session or usually on the next session.
This is a very annoying problem when it occurs although it is sporadic.
Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

My problem is that my left click button for my mouse control activates by itself. If the cursor is over a clickable button or another screen, it will activate that button or open that screen. If I'm typing, my text will suddenly transfer to where ever my cursor happens to be.

I'm not using an external mouse, just the one below the keyboard. My computer is a Sony VAIO VGN-T150P.

Contacted the Sony people once, and they suggested downloading and re-installing my mouse driver in Safe Mode, which I did (file name SODOTH-00201205-US, Sony PCG-UMS1 USB Mouse Driver for Microsoft). That did not help, assuming I did it correctly. After that they suggested restoring my computer to a time before the problem started. I really don't want to that if I can avoid it, since I have this problem for a while now.

Any suggestions?

Are you sure you aren't accidentally brushing it with your shirt or something as you type? Touchpads are notorious for this.

If you shut off the internal touchpad and then use an external mouse, does it still happen?

So this is weird. Just a couple days ago I reformatted my system and installed Windows 7 while dual-booting with Linux Mint. Today I ran into a situation where I lost my left-click functionality on my wireless mouse. I couldn't left click anywhere (in browser or not) I then unplugged my wireless mouse and plugged in a corded USB mouse and then I couldn't left OR right click but when i hover my mouse over windows I see that it does recognize the mouse. I had to reboot to get the mouse working properly again. After a while (20min or so) I lost the left click and here we go again. This happens on 3 different mice (wireless and wired) and it happens in Windows as well as Linux.

Today I was just using a corded mouse, doing basic web browsing and all of a sudden, I lose functionality with both of my mouse buttons (no left OR right click) but the middle scroll wheel still worked as did the mouse pointer. This is really weird. Anyone have any ideas here? Anyone up for a challenge? ;-)

I've never seen any other posts with that same problem so it may be intentionally built-in to that particular mouse to prevent others using your PC when you're away from it. Read it's instructions if you got any with it, it should tell you if it's got a built-in mouse lock, although that feature usually requires additional third-party mouse software to be installed to recognise when the appropriate buttons have been pressed.

If no instructions were supplied, go to it's manufacturer's website to see if it's mentioned there.

Hi so my Windows 10 XPS L502X touchpad has started behaving weirdly. I believe this is because of some Windows 10 updates, I am not sure.
The problem is that since laptop starts the left click seems to be sending clicked signal forever. Because of this on boot, the mouse starts in selection mode, I need to press the left click on an external mouse to disengage selection mode. But still the left click and tap to left click dont work.
But the weird part is when I change right touch pad button to left click behavior in settings. Then even the right button would now stop working. And if I change the left click button behavior to anything else then left click behavior then left click starts working too.
Hence coming to the conclusion that its a driver issue and not hardware problem.
However when I boot my laptop in Ubuntu, the left click is again in clicked mode and starts selecting stuff. Now if this was a driver problem then why is Ubuntu showing same issue. Is this a Hardware problem now. Now since dell officially does not support Win 10 on L502x. I request my fellow L502x owners using Windows 10 to share their driver details. And if anyone from Dell can share their thoughts. Regards.

A:Mouse/Trackpad registering one click as hold/drag

Hello walllable. Welcome to the forum.

Yes it could be. That is a common symptom of a defective touchpad.

Two things can help determine this:
If you can attach a mouse or external touchpad and they work normally.
If you uninstall (remove) the touchpad from Device Manager and then restart and let it reinstall and then reinstall it's driver and the problem persists.

if I keep ctrl button pressed and then click and drag with left mouse button (selecting text or using photoshop) this drag is sometimes "sticky" - when I finally release the mouse button system does not stop dragging. It behaves as I would still hold the left mouse button pressed... To release it I need to click again.

So, every once in a while I come across this strange issue:

1. Aero Peek suddenly stops workingWhen I hover my mouse over windows on the taskbar, the windows preview will flash for a fraction of a second and then vanish, if I'm moving my mouse along the taskbar the window preview will quickly "blink" (it appears and disappears) for as long I'm moving my pointer across that program's area on the taskbar, but nothing even remotely clear enough to see what's in that window. Once I stop moving the mouse, even while in that program's title area on the taskbar, i can't get the "blinking" effect to come back for that specific one unless I move my mouse off of it and then back on.2. Clicking with the scroll wheel to scroll stops workingI like to scroll pages by clicking and holding with the scroll wheel, then I release when I get to where I want to be. But that functionality no longer works, nor does simply clicking once and then moving the mouse to scroll. When I try either of these methods, the small white circle with the arrows which indicate that you've clicked to scroll with the mouse wheel will flash on the screen for an instant then disappear. What I've tried:
Restarting computer (works, but is a nuisance especially if I have a lot of tabs open in Chrome)
Ending every non-essential process in task manager, including explorer.exe and dwm.exe (doesn't work)
Disabling everything in Performance Options > Visual Effects (doesn't work)

Hey guys, I had to hop on a friends laptop to write this out, so bare with me. .

Problem: My mouse's left click will not work.

Story: I was playing a game, while botting on a game, while installing a game, and while i was playing a game the mouse just wouldn't left click anymore, infact it got stuck down and eventually let up. When i'm on my desktop it will occasionally start a drag box that i can't click out of.

Product: Some 10$ mouse from walmart, (HP Laser Wired). On a dell computer running vista 32 bit basic.

Tried solutions: I've tried running in safe mode, restarting, uninstalling the mouse drivers and reinstalling them, switching USB ports.

Conclusion: I'll be checking this post frequently by leaving the page on my main computer and pressing F5 to refresh, i will respond as soon as i am able to.

P.S. Thanks for your time!

Just got back from vacation, everything worked prior to that but I try logging into windows and when prompted to select profile I am unable to, after a while I finally get it in but can't select anything on desktop either. After a while I start using my keyboard so I find out it isn't my PC that is freezing or anything as it works fine, I then switch out my mouse for another one and get the same thing. After using attempting to livestream using OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) I tried ending the stream by clicking "stop streaming" but I noticed it wasn't working, I thought maybe my computer was just playing up (I hoped not it's 2 days old) so I just pressed Alt-F4 to close OBS.

After not getting a response from any left clicks I shut down my computer, thinking OBS was still running in the background and it was somehow interfering. When I logged back in to my PC I then realised that infact I was just not able to left click. After trying to uninstall some programs to see if this would fix the issue I got out my spare mouse, and that one worked perfectly. I tried sfc / scannow, uninstalled all my recently installed programs, un-installed my anti-virus and Razer Synapse 2.0. I read somewhere that conflicting software may be causing a problem so in the end I decided to restore Windows, and still my left click would not work. However when I re-bound left click to my 1 button on the mouse, it worked fine.

After all that I finally considered that my mouse might actually be broken. So I plugged it into a laptop to see if the left click was working and it wasn't. The timing seemed all too perfect for the reason to simply be that my mouse button is no longer working, and I read through multiple troubleshooting articles and forum posts from people with similar problems but none of the solutions provided worked.

I will start by telling you this is a clean installation of windows that has just finished, has not been online or done any sort of updates or driver installations - everything is off the disk, XP Pro Service Pack 2.

The problem started before i formatted the laptop and having tried everything (to the best of my own knowledge and online forums etc) i decided it would be easier to wipe and start again. WRONG WAS I!!!

The computer finished the install and went into windows. Its quite an old laptop and all the drivers were in place off the cd. Everything worked perfect ntil i rebooted for the very first time. Now the problem is back! Everytime i left click on a desktop item, in device manager etc the laptop tries to delete it and the confirm delete box pops up.

I have tried ...

Updating the mouse drivers
Disabling the mouse driver
Uninstall & reinstall mouse drivers
Deleting all mouse drivers from windows folder
A PS2 mouse
A USB mouse

Everything just leaves me with the same problem - it's crazy BUT it works perfectly fine in safe mode which leads me to believe it is some sort of software/driver problem and not hardware. Mousepad, ps2 mouse & usb mouse all do the same thing even with different drivers. I disabled the mousepad and used usb mouse, no different.

Completely stuck on this one and any help asap would be great, laptop is useless at the mo.

Press the Win key and type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
In the Device Manager screen, uninstall the Mouse
Reboot and see if that helps.

I have a gateway laptop and just recently my left click on my mouse has become very sensitive. It's not the touch pad, but the actual button under that. It highlights, drags, and clicks on things when I barely touch it. The slightest touch makes it click things and its driving me nuts! How do I fix this?

A:Very sensitive left mouse click

Welcome to TSG forums!
You might try opening the control panel and click on the mouse, select the buttons tab, there you can adjust the response of the mouse. I am not sure if this will take care of the problem, but it is free to try and might just fix it.
Let us know how it goes.

I seem to remember that there was a setting that I could change to prevent a drop-down from appearing whenever I clicked on an icon. Now I am presented with a drop-down that has "OPEN' as it's top item.
Please tell me where the setting is.

A:Left mouse click dropdown

That is the context menu. Normally, and by default, it is on the right mouse button, although it can be switched over to the left for those who are left-handed. You can change this in Mouse Properties.

Hi i'm not very microsoft literate so i need some very basic support.
my problem is i have lost the left click on my mouse. i managed to use keyboard to access the settings and change to right click as main button and now have this functionality. if i return to left click the right button still has its correct functions.

i have had this problem before after an update and system restore sorted it but this did not work this time as i cannot find an early enough restore point ?.
in settings i've tried deleting wireless sender and mouse a couple of times to force reinstall . the operation was sucssessfull but no change in mouse button problem.
using the m/soft troubleshooter page i've found out my particular mouse ( m/soft wireless laser mouse 5000) is not supported in win 10 and i should be using the intellipoint 8.2 drivers. however windows is using the keyboard and mouse center drivers and when i try to reinstall intellipoint i get the message " unable to install as later version installed".
i need to manually turn off / uninstall the keyboard/ mouse center somehow to reinstall the intellipoint drivers , i've followed various tutorials (m/soft and web) but i cannot find one only that only uses keystrokes or does not involve both mouse buttons (i've only got your left button or right button if i revert setting but not both at the same time). I've tried system scan and heath restore and creating second account without win reporting any problems and cc reg ... Read more

My wallpaper has been changed to some eerie yellow color, and it takes multiple left clicks to click on anything. Right click does not work at all. Also, there were no start menu icons or quick launch icons, until I ran unhide... I'm not sure if I was supposed to do that yet though, since from the looks of the forums we're supposed to do that after removal of the virus. I ran Malwarebytes and it removed 2 things after a full scan, but nothing has changed. Help would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

Using a mouse the right click behaves as I would expect it.  Using the touch pad, right and left click perform the same function.

Not sure how else I can title this post!

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15r as of this Christmas, running Windows 8. I ran the upgrade to 8.1 but I still have a problem with my cursor wanting to "hover click" on links or browser tabs, as well as being stuck in the down position, when I'm not even pressing on the touchpad left button. I end up selecting an entire region of stuff while moving the cursor across the screen.

I can't figure out what to change or configure in Control Panel, or is it in the Dell Touchpad configuration utility?

In Control Panel/Ease of Access Center/Make Your Mouse Easier To Use I have unchecked "Activate a Window by hovering over it with a mouse." Still happens.

It's driving me mad - never had this problem with Win 7 or any desktop machine.

Anyone? Thank you.

If you go into Mouse in Control Panel, then click Device Settings Tab.. on the right there's a Settings Button. I turned off the ones that say swipe. I also disabled rapid app switching. To do that press Winkey-q click Settings on the top right. Type "swipe" in the box. You should see a box on the left about rapid app switching. Click it and you can then disable it.

This is my first laptop also. The mouse gestures drove me crazy. About all I kept was tap click. Also I bought a $5 optical USB mouse and a $.97 mouse pad. I keep these in my Laptop case. When I have time and room to set up the mouse pad I feel much better about using the machine.
