Solved: Windows 7 synaptics left click acts like right click

Q: Solved: Windows 7 synaptics left click acts like right click

Windows 7 synaptics left click acts like right click after reboot and the right click doesn't work at all. I've downloaded the most recent driver & searched for a solution online but haven't found anyone who has fixed this issue. Did everyone just give up or am I not patient enough & haven't dug deep enough. If I use a USB mouse there are no problems it just seems to be with the built-in after I've used the USB mouse.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I don't know if this is normal but I find it annoying. Using the synaptic touch pad on a Windows 8.1 laptop, I find that if the cursor lingers over an icon or shortcut for a second or so, it sometimes acts as if I had clicked on it. I don't think it is the touch pad sensitivity setting. Is there a separate setting that makes a cursor hover act as a click?
Thank you.

Really ready to unistall this driver at this point in time but then i'll be stuck with the unbarable tap2click which i can't disable since i'm defaulted back to Microsoft's mouse drivers. So it turns out my right click works just fine, It's just for some reason Synaptics disables my right click. Is there a way to fix this?

Just a goofy phenomena that seems to be puzzling me. Each time I single click on a desktop icon, it acts like it was double clicked and opens the file/program. When single clicking on a scroll-bar to the right of a window, it acts like it was double clicked, traveling much further down the screen than expected.

I'm using Windows ME. My mouse is an IBM Scrollpoint II, 3-button mouse with a small scroll pivot-lever. Any assistance to solve this problem will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there Amaul,

One thing to check is go into the 'mouse properties' in the 'Control Panel' and under the 'Buttons' tab there will be an option for 'Files and Folders'. Make sure the 'double-click to open an item' is selected.

Hope this helps.

Info on my PC is below. In many windows such as those opened within Internet Explorer, a right mouse click on the right-hand scroll bar acts like a double click, making the scroll go down much further than wanted. It used to be that a single click on the empty area of the bar would make the screen go down only one screen height. It now goes down two. Please help as this is irritating.

Hi,
I am after some help. My laptop has decided to reverse the right click and left click functions, ie: if I left click it now does not select but instead brings up a menu (which the right click button should and used to do!) I've tried holding down both buttons (as suggested by a friend) by this has no effect and I can't see any options to reverse the functions in the 'mouse properties' menu... and ideas please!
Thanks

My wallpaper has been changed to some eerie yellow color, and it takes multiple left clicks to click on anything. Right click does not work at all. Also, there were no start menu icons or quick launch icons, until I ran unhide... Dell Latitude - XPsp3

This is a problem with the built in mouse pad. I left click something like the desktop and the options menu comes up as though it was a right click. It's not a software setting, as I've checked them all, and I've reinstalled XP.

The only (temporary) fix I can apply is to plug in a usb mouse. Then the touchpad mouse will act appropriately. But it reverts back to this issue upon reboot.

Should I update the BIOS?

Not sure how else I can title this post!

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15r as of this Christmas, running Windows 8. I ran the upgrade to 8.1 but I still have a problem with my cursor wanting to "hover click" on links or browser tabs, as well as being stuck in the down position, when I'm not even pressing on the touchpad left button. I end up selecting an entire region of stuff while moving the cursor across the screen.

I can't figure out what to change or configure in Control Panel, or is it in the Dell Touchpad configuration utility?

In Control Panel/Ease of Access Center/Make Your Mouse Easier To Use I have unchecked "Activate a Window by hovering over it with a mouse." Still happens.

It's driving me mad - never had this problem with Win 7 or any desktop machine.

Anyone? Thank you.

A:Dell Inspriron Hover-Click and Left-Click Gets Stuck

If you go into Mouse in Control Panel, then click Device Settings Tab.. on the right there's a Settings Button. I turned off the ones that say swipe. I also disabled rapid app switching. To do that press Winkey-q click Settings on the top right. Type "swipe" in the box. You should see a box on the left about rapid app switching. Click it and you can then disable it.

This is my first laptop also. The mouse gestures drove me crazy. About all I kept was tap click. Also I bought a $5 optical USB mouse and a $.97 mouse pad. I keep these in my Laptop case. When I have time and room to set up the mouse pad I feel much better about using the machine.

Hello all, from a few days until now I have started experiencing what seems to be a recurrent problem in the P50 laptop touchpad drivers. When using the driver 19.3.4.16 for synaptics pointing device, the left button of the touchpad double clicks most of the times (about 70-80% of the time). If I decide to update my drivers to the latest version, 19.3.4.202, then something even worse happens: the left and right buttons are inverted (and I have checked that the box of inverting the buttons in control panel is unclicked). From what I have been reading this has been an issue that has happened before already, but I don't know if Lenovo fixed it, or it has just been unsolved until now. Maybe someone around here can help me with this?

A friend came by about 3 weeks ago and attempted to show me the proper way to use tabbing in IE8. After he left, I noticed a difference in the process to connect to links within web pages that I'd never experienced before. He lives overseas and is hard to contact.

When in my browser, I have always left-clicked to go to a linked site. That works just fine; however, when I am in a webpage with embedded links, I can sometimes left click to go to the site of some of those links, but find that for other embedded links, I must rigt click and choose "open link" or "open link in new tab" or "open link in new page".

I've never had to right click to go to a link within any web page.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:Synaptics Clickpad - Right Click not working after windows 8...

Hey man,The same thing happened to me, and I'm 99% sure that it's due to the windows 8.1 upgrade.  I tried to contact HP support, but they were absolutely worthless (wanted to restore my laptop to factory settings, then reinstall 8.1).  Until HP gets their act together and puts out a fix for this, I would suggest using this: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-enable-two-finger-tap-for-right-click-in-windows/.  Completely restores the two finger right click functionality.  I would recommend that you leave the synaptics drivers installed and just use this in tandem, as that's what I'm doing, and it's working fine.  You may have to go into the settings for the Two Finger Scroll app and turn OFF the scrolling feature, however, as it was interfering with the synaptics scroll for me.

I've been having this trouble for a couple of months and i just can't figure out what has caused it.
On regular intervals usually happens within every half an hour the buttons on my mouse stop responding and I have to press ctrl+alt+del to get a response out of them and when I do the left click becomes the right click (right click always remains as right click)
To fix it I left click to bring the right click menu bar up choose properties then while the properties window is up right click and choose properties again and that always resets it back to normal.
Also what happens every hour or so the right click menu bar opens up on screen without touching the mouse,
and the page every now and again goes back to a previous web page (like pressing "back" on the right click drop down menu) without me touching the mouse aswell.
I use google chrome and due to the left and right click problem chrome's drop down menu does not respond when clicked,
if I just press on the favourites tab it opens every single page I have set as a favourite and also when I click on a web page tab it shuts it down,
I found out through google that this happens when you middle click on the cross icon on the web page tab area and then you have to middle click it again to reset it back to normal so it seems my middle click button seems troublesome too
And also I think due to this problem when I use VLC player I can't use the players interface at all so I have to close the program dow... Read more

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Everything was fine and I liked it. Then it stopped registering the clicks from my mouse. I rebooted and it was back to normal. After a while it stopped again and I've been fighting with it ever since. It works about 1 out of every 15 reboots. I've tried rebooting with the dvd for windows repair, nothing. I removed wireless USB card and switched to ethernet connection, worked for a minute until next reboot. I've reinstalled windows (haven't formatted yet) to no avail.

I've tried and tried to contact windows for support, but can't find a phone number. When I try to go through the steps on their site, it says that my product ID isn't good for this country, yet I bought it at Best Buy here in Louisiana, and they want to charge me $50 to talk to me!! I'm fit to be tied!!

The one thing different that I did was, when I initially upgraded, I disconnected my backup drive since I didn't have anywhere else to back it up. I re-connected it once everything was reinstalled. For the life of me I can't seem to figure this out. If I have to format everything I will. I about to that point right now.

I've tried and tried to contact windows for support, but can't find a phone number. The one thing different that I did was, when I initially upgraded, I disconnected my backup drive since I didn't have anywhere else to back it up. I re-connected it once everything was reinstalled. Hello.

When I left click I sometimes have to click the button several times for it to respond. The right click works perfectly - there are no problems with it.
Naturally I tried switching the primary and secondary buttons in the 'Mouse' options, but the problem remains - the left click (right mouse button) is unresponsive, just as the left mouse button was before I switched them (the right click still works perfectly with the left mouse button).

This same problem persists with several different mouses, so I am sure the problem isn't the mouse itself.

I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Media Center and I'm not sure if that is where the problem began.

My PS/2 Compatible Mouse driver details reads: "File version 5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2.rtm.040803-2158"

What steps do you recommend me taking? Are there any additional information you would like to have?
Please write some simple instructions when asking for information which might be hard to find, to avoid the cause for me to post "how" and having to wait for a delayed period of time to find out how to provide you with the information you require.

Thank you very much.

Sorry for posting a reply so soon, but I am not able to find any way to edit my previous post.

It should be noted that I have also tried using a graphics tablet instead of a mouse and it works perfectly. So, again, the problem only affects mouses and seems to be software related. I have installed the latest up... Read more

Doesn't happen all the time, but has increased in how often it takes place.

Today, I go to Desktop background. I try to click once on a picture file, and then use the arrow keys to scroll down the files. This worked fine last week. It now acts as if I turned on single click. I haven't.

I checked double click speed, and I have moved it waaaay down towards slow. Probably less than 10 percent of the way from 'Slow'. It was up at 75 percent towards Fast.

It really doesn't seem to make much difference.

edit:

Logitech mouse that came with the computer. Specs in 'My system specs' in the forum links.

A:mouse acts like single click is active

Sounds like time for a new mouse

or

Go to device manager, check drivers for mouse. Make sure it is the most current (from company website, not automatic update). Look for yellow warning markers.

If wireless check batteries.

Hi guys,

If somebody can help me, I don't know if anyone has had this issue, but sometimes I cannot click the "back" button or "file" or any other topbar icons either in IE9, chrome, also with office 2010. It is strange as when I restore to a smaller window then it works immediately, but as soon as I maximize it, it doesn't work.

I have asus c90s laptop with win 7 32bit with aero on, I have some customized settings but I still don't know where is this coming from, it happens many times, and sometimes it just restores back to normal, also happens with my itunes, etc... basically any program maximized doesn't left/right click on any part of the topbar only if I restore the window to smaller size. Also it shows that when i try to click on the bar, it just goes transparent like I have chosen something from the back of the window, any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have tried to disable Aero and still the problem persists, the only way to work is with Windows classic theme, but it is too basic for me

I use Windows XP. Suddenly, when I go to My Computer and left click on a drive ( C for example) instead of opening, it immediately goes into "Search."

If I right click on the drive (any one listed) the drop down menu appears and "Search" is on top and in bold. I can left click "open" and get to my drive and once in everything works as normal.

What have I inadvertently done recently to make "Search" the default order when I double left click a drive and how do I return "open" as my default?

Thank you in advance for what I hope is a simple answer.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Please try the registry fix which can be downloaded here.

Unzip it then double click it to merge it with your registry. Then reboot and try accessing the drive again.
