I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

What version of excel are you using, are they .xls files or something else (excel2007 uses .xslx for example). If its .xls format, one simple thing you could try is to use an online conversion utility and change it to a different file format:http://media-convert.com/Another option is to try to open the file with a different "viewer":http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=EN

Recently I was trying to upgrade my computer from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional. In the process of doing this I accidentally deleted my partition. I tried to recover my files through a recovery program and I did. Unfortunately though some of my word and excel files were recovered as unknown and these files were corrupted. An example of what the text looks like is: ࡱ > . The word files that I know are only a couple of pages each have this weird text on thousands of pages each. Is there any way to get my files back as they were before? Is there another recovery program I could use to recover all of my files so that they are in their original working condition?

Please help! I deleted an mdb file in My Documents. Used a recovery program to recover the file onto my D drive. When I try to put the file back into My Documents on my C drive the program I run that uses the file gives me a unrecognized database format message. When I click on the properties of the file it asks me what program I want to open it with. I have Windows ME and I need to know what file types go with the mbd extensions and what program it opens with. My folder options gives me the option to change all that and now I don't know what the correct associations are. I hope someone can make sense of this and help!

My computer crashed a few days ago. I've been able to recover most of the data except for a very important excel document. I'm able to open it but when opened it only displays jibberish. IE - weird symbols like squares and greek symbols and numbers instead of words. Any idea on why this is happening and how to fix it. The only other thing is that I was previously using an older Microsoft Excel. When I recovered my computer I installed a newer version of Excel...but I didn't think that would any difference because of backwards compatibility.

I am having issues with recovering some homework assignments saved on Word. The file is corrupted and will not open.

I have tried "Open & Repair," "Recover Text from any File" and tried to convert it to other formats. I have also tried most of the suggestions listed in similar archived threads. No luck so far.

Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Attached below are the files.

When I open my file, an error message saying that Winword generated an error log appears and after 10 seconds, the file along with MS-Word close themself.

I open the file with Wordpad and then save it back as a doc file and voil, the file is no more corrupted.

I am using Word 97 under W2K Pro.

I am fine with the result but would like to understand the process.

A:corrupted MS-Word file

Does this:

a) continue to occur with one specific file

b) occur once with multiple files

c) both of the above
One reason: Some programs do not recognize "features or formatting" of other programs. Hence, WordPad doesn't recognize the "feature of formatting" and, hence, doesn't see any corruption. The corruption is lost because WordPad didn't save the "feature or format" it didn't recognize in the first place.

I just recently finished typing my Phd abstract and the deadline is in a few days. I transferred the finished document to a usb drive, so as to print it off a different computer which was connected to the printer. When I tried to open it this is what it says:

On clicking the details button it says

On clicking ok It gives the following message

"Word found unreadable content "title.docx" Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source of the document click yes."

I clicked yes, and this is what it says:

I have a corrupted excel file (22kb). When I try and open it, it simply opens to a blank workbook. Here's the story behind it, and I'm blaming MICROSOFT for their damn policy on needing the original Office CD to install office updates.

Went to Office update, needed 5 patches. When trying to install, Windows Installer came up and asked for Office CD. I put one in, but the updates failed. Now, I installed this at work but I used ANOTHER copy of the Office CD for these updates, not the original disk that I used to install Office on my computer (we have several copies of the CD's with my IT department). So, I needed to go to head office to get the original disk.

In the meantime, I tried to open an excel file through my floppy drive. Immediately, Windows Installer came up and told me to insert the office CD (I know this to be a bug in excel). Shortcuts to excel will not work until your installation completes successfully through the office CD. The ONLY way to open excel in this case is to type the EXACT PATH in the run command!! WTF??

Now, I did manage to get a hold of the exact CD used to install office on my computer and everything installed properly. But, now when I tried to open the said file, it said "A: drive not formatted properly". I then went to safe mode and did a CHKDSK and ticked both options to see if I had a bad disk. Big mistake....now when I try and open the file, I get a blank workbook.

I have an excel file that is corrupt. On 2/27/15 we were infected with a file corruption virus. I am not sure the name exactly, I just know it was detected very quickly, stopped and removed, and we thought we had recovered all of our damaged files from backup. However at this time I have 1 excel file that is saying it's corrupted when we try to open it similar to what it would say when hit by a virus. The thing that puzzles me is that the last modified date of the file says 2/12/15, before the virus hit. All of the other files that were hit had their modified dates changed to 2/27/15 as they were hit by the virus. So my question is how do I know if a virus caused this and could there possibly be a way to recover the file. I have tried all of the things I can find on the web, converting the file to .txt, using excel open and recover and have no success. I saw an old post from 2014 where someone sent the file to someone who could tell specifically if it was hit by a virus or not.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. We do perform nightly backups and I have 2 backup drives but all have the 2/12/15 file and are corrupted as well.
Thank you for your help!

I am using a computer with Windows XP Media Center and it came with Microsoft Works Word on it. After doing some editing and writing I saved my work and when I went back to it and tried to open it says I need to use a file converter which I said okay to. And then it came up with the following message and after acknowledging the message Word opens up a blank template as if to start a new file.

Works cannot open "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop\Paid To wps". The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.

How do I uncorrupt this file. I opened it under a diffferent format and could see some of my file along with a lot of wing dings or whatevers. But I need to be able to open it in word as a wps file. All my other files open up without difficulty. Any help would really be appreciated.

I'm a bit hazy on the details of this one as I'm not exactly sure what happened.

A few weeks ago I had some issues with not being able to save files. This came at an inconvenient time for work and I was pretty stressed out. I can't actually remember what I did to solve this but the problem eventually went away, although I had no idea what had caused it at the time.

Some days later when I tried to open a word document I got a message saying something along the lines of "are you sure you want to open this file? It has become corrupted and caused loads of problems with your computer the last time you had it open". So I guess that was the original issue. At the time I didn't desperately need the file and I had a lot of work so I haven't had time to try to solve the issue until now. Does anyone know what might have caused the file to get corrupted? (I'm not even sure my PC used this term). And is there any way I can retrieve the information in it?

Thank you!

A:Accessing a corrupted word file

If the file is severely corrupted and nothing is working, you can try a Word recovery tool to retrieve the information from it. This is the only thing you are left with. But before trying this, you can also try "Open and Repair" technique of MS Word. This will fix the file and you can view it with ease. If this fails, you can try a third-party recovery tool for corrupted Word document.

I can recommend you SysInfoTools Word recovery tools here. If you are talking about DOC file, you can try its SysInfoTools MS Word DOC Recovery tool, or if you are talking about DOCX file, you can try its SysInfoTools MS Word DOCX Recovery tool.

Try free demo version of these tool first.

I have an important excel file that after closing and saving one day, it wouldn't reopen. It always rejects the password that I normally use to open it. It was also saved on drop box, and using drop box's previous version history, the last two saves also wont open, and the third one which opens is about a week old.
I use the files almost ever day, so a week old means I lost some information, but its not too bad if I'm not able to recover the file, it will just save me a lot of work.

I tried using Password recovery online excel, word, pdf, rar, zip password but it says the decryption failed.

I have been running PDS Excel Password Recovery.

I'm unable to use MS office built in recovery since the file is encrypted and I can't get pass the encryption.

This files was probably created on Excel 2003 (I think), and last saved on Excel 2010. It was used on multiple computers through excel, but never at the same time.

I have spent a long time trying to research this problem, and it doesn't seem like I am the only one with the issue, but I also haven't found an answer yet.

My daughter has been working on a major final year high school project for several weeks using Word 2000 XP. She has consistently saved the file to floppy disk so as to swap between home and school PC but neglected to save to the HDD. Upon completing the project she attempted to load the final saved file from the floppy. To her great distress the file loaded in an apparently corrupted form with lines of text interspersed with numerous blocks of blank squares. The file seemed about double the original size, text was in an italic font and seemed to be randomly scattered and/or missing sections. She is naturally distraught at the possibility of having lost most of the data she spent weeks compiling and the deadline for submission looming. Can the file be reconstituted or recovered in the correct format. Why would this happen?. Any help/advice would be greatfully received. As a not so computer savy mum I am helpless to assist her.

Hi all, a new member here.
I was wondering if anybody could assist with a question. Windows 7, Office 2010 user here. I received a corrupted WORD file sent by someone as part of a work assignment that couldn't be opened.
And then, the supposedly same WORD file sent thereafter (hours) which opens properly in Word 2010. The file size is different (107Kb for the corrupted one vs 118 Kbs for the uncorrupted one).
When I open the corrupted file in Notepad, there is a:
"Document Microsoft Word    MSWordDoc   Word.Document.8 ô9²q"
at the end. That is the only 'searchable' text. From my understanding, Word 8 is a 1997-2003 Word version.
When I open the Uncorrupted file in Notepad, there is alot more searchable text for "Word", as well as "excel" (but I cannot find any reference to the the Word version).
The paragraph format of the jumbled text paragraphs are notably different too.
1) Is there any way that the corrupted Word file 'magically' messed up that bad?
2) Should the 2 files in Notepad open the same way? (type of text, shape of paragraph, size of document). Or does unintended corruption result in such a stark difference in Notepad?
3) Any way to tell if it was intentionally done?
Thank you in adv... Read more

A:Opening Corrupted Word file in Notepad

Hello, and Welcome
If the file was transferred via email or the internet there is always a chance it could get corrupted in transit.
Corruption can result in a difference in Notepad results.
No, you can't tell if this was intentionally done.
Try opening the file with another word processor. You can try the portable version of Abiword or the portable version of Libre Office Write. You just double click the downloaded file from portable apps and extract to a folder on your desktop. Then double click the program exe file. I would start with Abiword as it's only about 8MB.
Edit: Have you tried the Open and Repair option?

Hi Expert

A:Fix corrupted Excel xls or xlsx file after recovery

First try File | Open ... browse for the file, then click the dropdown triangle on the Open button and choose Open and Repair.  If it prompts, the "Repair" options is better, but if it fails, try again, choosing "Extract".
Then, check the size of the recovered file.  Is it likely all your data is included?  if so, you can try to access the data from the file without opening it by creating an external reference.  In cell A1 of a blank workbook, type a reference to the A1 cell of the corrupted workbook, following this format:
Beyond that, what is the file format?  There may be more options.  Lots of help here: https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/256362

Hello all,

I have been presented with a project that involves Forms that I am not able
to resolve.

Basically I have been asked to create a document template where other team
members can fill out a form that asks a series of questions, then to have
only the completed form results export to a new file.

I am aware that Word can export the form results to a text file, but when I
do this all of the questions that were on the original form are exported to
the new file.

What we are looking to achieve in the end:
If the end user is faced with 20 questions, but only 12 of the questions
pertain to the end users project, only the 12 completed form fields will
export to a new file.

I know that this should be possible with using a macro button to export the data, but that is where I need the help.

I tried searching for this exact situation, but I did not find any matches, hence the new thread.

Thank you in advance,

I have 2 corrupted Excel files that I store on Microsoft SharePoint.  I store hundreds of other Excel 2013 files there, but 2 recently became corrupted.  Actually, the only 2 that became corrupted were password protected.  When I try to open each file, it says that they can't be opened because they are corrupted.
I've tried every available recover option and advice; recover formula, data, excel recovery software, open and repair, etc.  I believe that because the files are password protected, standard Excel recovery programs won't work.  I've tried 6 of the more common ones that come up in a google search and they all can't repair the file.  I can't remove the password because it won't open due to the corruption.  In other words, I don't have the option to enter a password because it says that it is corrupted before I have a chance to enter a password.
I've heard that it might be ransom ware or a virus, but nothing has popped up on my computer and all of my non-password protected Excel files are corrupted.
I've tried opening and repairing the file with Excel 2007, too...no luck.
I'm running Windows 8.1, Excel 2013.  Both corrupted Excel files are small...less than 300 kb.
I have the password, so has anyone else had this problem?  If not, does anyone know of someone I could hire to extract the data that I had in the spreadsheet?

A:system restore to get deleted excel file??

System Restore doesn't archive files.

Your best bet is to use one of these:

The more you install and the more you use the computer, the greater the chances that something will get written over the top of the lost file. Ideally, you would put your drive in another machine as a slave so that nothing got written to it at all. Then install and run these recovery programs from there.

Delete all your temporary internet files, temp files, and anything else you can. That will free up some drive space and lessen the chances that your file will be overwritten.

Have you tried Recuva? They are many programs of this type but I trust Piriform (makers of Ccleaner). Whatever program you choose, do it fast! The longer you wait the more chance you have of overwriting the lost data so time is of the essence here. Use your machine as sparingly as possible until you try any recovery software. Of course, the simple fact of downloading any of the programs has the risk of overwriting your lost data.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

The tab I'm inserting it into is set up correctly (in this case Landscape Legal). But when I view, it only has the first page (of two) from the Word document. I've given it enough space page break wise.

Is there a better way to do this than my first idea (insert one document for the first page, and another for the second)?

Thanks in advance.

A:Insert File From Word into Excel

I know it seems it should work, but it doesn't. I'd just copy and paste special between Word and Excel. In Excel, use Edit | Paste Special | Text.

Select All in the Word doc. In Excel, widen column A, format to wrap text, and do the paste special | text.

Not as quick as Insert | Object, but it works.

Excel cannot open the file " " because the  file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches.
Files got corrupted at time of virus removal. also have and use Carbonite backup if that helps.
Already tried:
Open MS Excel in your system.
Click on File tab > Open. Or press Ctrl+O.
Locate the corrupted XLSX file and select it.
Click on the arrow shown beside the Open button.
Click on Open and Repair in the list.
Still wont open files, any help would be appreciated

Uninstall/reinstall MS Office...update for all SPs...update for all critical updates.
Then try.

I am still running Windows XP with Office 2007. Suddenly neither Excel or Word will automatically open existing files when I click on them from windows explorer. I can go to the Open option in the menu bar for Excel or Word, select the file to open and it will then open properly. Are there any option settings that allow for the files to open when click on them? I do not receive any error messages nor does the event viewer provide any error messages.

A:Excel / Word File Opening

does it give any error messages

in the file manager
do you have the word/excel icon next to the file ?

if you right click on the file - do you get an "open with" option

have a read here - see if the file is associated with the program

Recently, when I open either my MS Word or Excel programs, and click on the yellow "Open" folder, whereas previously a list of my saved documents came up, now sometimes the page is blank! If I leave it for, say, ten minutes, they appear and I can open and work on them, but I wondered whether anyone had an idea as to why this is happening? I am running Windows 7 (64 bit). Many thanks.
