Unable to install updates on Windows 7 [Error code 80072F8F]

Q: Unable to install updates on Windows 7 [Error code 80072F8F]

Hello,

For the last couple of months I have been unable to install updates on Windows 7. I try to look for updates but it gives me this error:

(It's dutch but you get the idea)

I searched the code on google and most results told me to sync my time. My time is correct, yet I still get the same error code everytime.

Is there anyone who can help me with this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi - welcome to the forums!

Hmmm - Invalid Class error - that's a VERY rare error in your MGADiag report.....
It appears to be caused by a broken WMI store.

Please run the following commands,

Net stop winmgmt /y
Net stop wscsvc
MD c:\wmibackup
DIR %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository
MOVE %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository\*.* c:\wmibackup
DIR %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository
NET start wscsvc
Net start winmgmt
Net start iphlpsvc

WAIT 10 minutes for the store to rebuild, then reboot.

wait another 10 minutes (just in case), then run another MGADiag report.

By the way, how did you acquire your Windows license? - it's an MSDN-type one, and is not for general sale.

I've uploaded a file - cpyaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder cpyaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

... as far as the Windows 10 notification is concerned, I don't think it's related, but it's possible.

Hello Technet community,

Since the last 2 weekends Windows Update error code 80072F8F has been plaguing my new Surface Pro 2 w/Windows 8.1 which:
1. Is joined to a domain.
2. Has a domain account which is also a Local Admin and it is linked to a Microsoft Account.
3. Correctly receives machine GPOs at boot (1st via wireless computer Auth THEN (after) via Domain User Re-Auth after login).

What I've tried so far:
- clean boot & restore windows updates (either aggressively and/or through the MS Fixit).
- The NTP setup follows a domain hierarchy (UTC+9.30 updated every 3mins.); all domain members are NT5DS clients & they correctly recognise and receive the same time from the PDC emulator.
- No Proxies in between (just a standard nat).
- The following sites have been added to the trusted sites (as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018/en-au):

http://update.microsoft.comhttps://update.microsoft.comhttp://*.update.microsoft.comhttps://*.update.microsoft.comhttp://download.windowsupdate.com

- The internet zones security has been either:
1. Set according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018/en-au
2. Set to low for all zones.
- The client firewall has been disabled.
- The client AV (Windows Defender) has been disabled.
- sfc /scannow reports no violations.
- Root certificates have been manually refreshed (as per http://gavinmckay.wordpress.com/2010/09/28/howto-fixing-windows-update-error-code-80072f8f/ && http://www.danielfortier... Read more

Suddenly Windows 7 has stopped installing Windows Updates. It downloads, then creates restore point, starts installation, but then comes back with the error code 800F0900. This happens with all the updates when carried out individually, critical or optional. I first went through the process of clearing all the Start-up Programs in the Services section of msconfig. As that did not solve it I then stopped all but MS services, and that did not solve it.  I tried the Microsoft .NET Setup Verification Tool. This said there were problems that it could not fix and sent a report to Microsoft.  Following an earlier thread on this site, I installed and used the Windows Repair program from Tweeking.com. This failed to solve the problem. Does any one have any other possible advice to help solve this problem ?

Would welcome any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot this problem.

Not much more what you already know

1.Make sure time in BIOS and in the system is the same
2.Update manulaly time clock>>time from internet...
3.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

slmgr -rearm

wait for the moment until you recieve message from this command

/*I know it sound stupid run this command when system is already registred but probably this command is also responsible for reconfigure licence time -I don't know exactly*/
4.In C:\Windows\WinSxS delete all *.xml files and delete all in C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp
5.Restart computer - then you can uninstall hotfix which has been incorrect installed -this time you should do that
6.Install this problematic hotfix from Microsoft Download Center

if this fail try update BIOS and repeat the whole above procedure

Hi,
I have been having some recurring problems with the attempts to install some automatic windows updates.

Security Update for Microsoft Office Acess 2007
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook Junk Email Filter

I am not able to install these updates, maybe any other updates in general. After attempting the install the following install window says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Next to it an error code 80070643. Microsoft provides a solution to the problem, by re-installing Microsoft NET. Framework. They also provide a link to the program NET. Framework cleanup tool that enables you to uninstall NET. Framework, and it's components.

I followed Microsoft's instructions to solve the issue, though I've been put at a standstill. I have used the NET. Framework Cleanup tool to uninstall NET. Framework and it's components (states that it uninstalls all versions, 1.1 SP1 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5.) Then afterwards instructed to reinstall NET. Framework, specifically in an order, 3.5 then, 1.1, then 1.1 SP1. I start with 3.5, then as the installation starts it says that to contiunue installation I must turn off or on windows features in the Control Panel. I do so and turn off all Windows features. Then continue and it again states to turn off features in the Control Panel.

I wasn't able to continue the process, and I am also concerned that this is the same error that made me unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials, (as t... Read more

I just got a new Dell Inspirion laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium Service pack 2. As usual there were several Windows Security updates that needed to be installed. Took two days to install them all. Or I thought all had installed. But after Secunia PSI kept insisting that no updates were installed, I checked the update history and found several had failed to install. All have the same Error code of 800F0902

I ran Microsoft Fixit tool, which said it detected no problems. But obviously that too failed.

The list of updates that failed are too numerous to report but here a few:

KB2909210

KB2656356

KB2789645

KB2756921

Most seemed to have to do with the Net Framework 3.5.1.

Does anyone have a clue how I can resolves this? Most importantly is my new Dell a lemon?

Thank for your time,

I am having an issue installing Windows Updates (WU) all have Error Code: 80070005.

Nine updates installed after several tries, but there are about 50 updates waiting to be downloaded and installed.

I ran the SURT, but it kept spinning...all day, so I canceled it. Tried running it again, but it wouldn't let me run it again.

I ran the SFC Scan and have the SFC detail log attached. Appears a lot of files were repaired and some could not be repaired. The files that couldn't be repaired are mostly sample MS music, pictures, etc. Stuff I am not interested in.

Maybe one of my cleaners deleted same as a useless/unused file or maybe a virus corrupted some files? I didn't see anything in the SFC detail log pertaining to WU?

The CBS compressed zip log is 13.6MB, which is over the 8MB upload limit, so couldn't upload it?

On June 23, 2016, MSSE picked up a Rogue: JS/FakeCall.D labeled (Severe). It was quarantined by MSSE, I deleted it.

Malwarebytes this past week picked up and quarantined a few rootkits labeled as severe or a threat. I deleted those. Not sure if these items affected WU or not?

Would the Windows Update - Reset tutorial would work to fix my WU issue here? Seems like a uncomplicated fix?

So any help here would be appreciated, Thanks!

A:Windows Updates won't install, Error Code: 80070005

Hi Vista32,
Thats not good reading.
Most system security experts would advise a complete RE-install of any OS compromised by a Rootkit, but you, from your own admission, have had few.
Iam NOT a security expert but in this case I WOULD, if you can identify them, look them up at BleepingComputers they have an excellent catalogue of Rootkits and there impact/removal.
Just removing them does NOT allways guarentee a clean system.

Having said that SFC has done a pretty good job of repairing some of whats been infected/changed, but it is advised to run it 3x.
From what i can see there are certainly still some errors, in Windows media player, and there are likely to be others
SURT can take >>hours<< to run especially on a previously infected system, as it also makes repairs as it goes along

You can run the troublshooter, if you want.

I read the rules about posting and one things it mentions in the post was to post up the CBS log file buts it over 1gb and it wont open it even when zipped. I did ran sfc last month but it didnt pick up anything. Enabling and disabling windows updated trigger anything to work. I havent uninstalled SP1 yet but how safe is this?

My OS is: Windows 7 pro SP1 64bit.

The three updates are:

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3126587)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3126593)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3140410)

And they all have the same error code: 80073701. I did find a standalone installer for KB3126587 but the error message I keep getting when I run it is: "The update is not applicable to your system". Even though it damn well is the correct version.
Any directions on where to go from here? I feel like I have run out of options

Hi Mallett,
OK lets go with what we can get. you said that sfc was fine last month.
Can you post the windows update log from the last sfc rundate
Run the SURT from here
Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

This started because I had to pull the battery on my motherboard to reset the CMOS, which solved the initial problem I was having, but now Windows Update doesn't work, giving me the Code 80072F8F error, which Windows helpfully tells me is because "your computer's date and time might not be the same as the date and time for the online Windows Update service."

So, I manually updated the date/time and tried again.

No dice.

I then attempted to do a Internet Time Synch and got the extremely helpful error message, "An error occurred."

I tried all of the time servers automatically provided by Windows.

Same error.

I then looked up a list of time servers and manually input the one closest to my physical location.

Same error.

I then opened up a command prompt and tried manually stopping, unregistering, registering and starting the Time Service.

The error persists.

From searching, it seems like this a (fairly) common problem, but at this point, I seem to have exhausted the "solutions" that I've found so on the web.

How do I get the time synch and, more importantly, Windows Update, working again?

TIA,

Stuart

Hello there,

For the best part of a year I have been struggling with the exact same issue. I am unable to install these 2 pending updates. Consequently, I am unable to update further and am stuck on an old version of Windows 10 exposed to several threats.

I have already contacted Microsoft support several times and their outcome every time was to "purchase higher support". Prior to this post I have reinstalled Windows many times freshly and I am unable to solve this issue.

The only interferences I can think of is the fact I have changed the default program installation folders in the registry to a seperate drive (P:/ Drive) and my user is saved on a seperate drive (S:/ Drive).

The error I get is as follows:

? Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3176493) - Error 0x80070bc9
? Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3172729) - Error 0x80070bc9

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated as I am getting to the ends of what I can handle.

Many regards,
Sam

For the past 2-3 months I've been receiving the same error in Windows Update every time I try and update: Error 80246008. I've tried the Microsoft Fix It application and the same problem occurs. I took a look into the services and when I try to start one service required by Windows Update it always fails because its core services are not launched, so I tried to launch those and those won't even launch. Hi

I have several updates(currently 3 but it was 5 last time I tried) that fail.
They seem to download alright, but on installation the progress bar takes a few leaps
to the end, and it's all fails. I stopped updating for a week or so, and today, I was able
to successfully apply 14 out of the 17 updates that were available. So now it's just these
3 for some reason.

Those are:

Important updates
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3040272)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3065979)
Optional
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3064209)

Here's the info:
OS is Windows 7 Home premium(64bit)
The error code I am given is: 8024200D
I have downloaded and run the SURT tool.
I have also several times run the sfc /scannow cmd.
I repeatedly tried to update at every stage, with no luck.
The CBS.zip is attached.

Running the automatic troubleshooter from the microsoft site reports the following
as a Windows update error and says it couldn't fix it:

InformationalError Report
RootCause: RC_DataStore
ErrorCode: 0x800F081F

As you can see, the error code there is a different one than the one I get directly from
the failed Windows update.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

A:Some updates won't install Error Code: 8024200D

I searched for the updates in question online, and downloaded and installed them manually. I then checked for new updates(after a reboot), and windows update successfully downloaded and installed all by itself. It seems my troubles are a thing of yesterday. Hooray! Still though, I don't get why this happened in the first place ... oh well.

Hi,

Since 10/07/2014 I am having serious problems with 9 updates in Windows Update.
I just took a look at some other topics in this forum section and it seems I am not the only one having these problems.

I've already tried several things i've found on the internet, but nothing really nothing worked out for me.
I've tried the hotfix, didn't work out; i've tried multiple CMD commands, didn't work out; i've tried to rename the catroot2 folder, didn't work out either...

Is this problem common? Because most of the updates are important; so i'd like them to be installed and they keep on failing every day since then.

If I need to post or upload something, please tell me, because i'm not a computer expert ;-)

Thanks in advantage,

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I have downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool from the Microsoft site. However the CBS.zip file generated from the CBS file produced by running this tool is some 12 MB in size and falls foul of the 8MB limit imposed by the forum, and I cannot attach it. How do I get over this?

I have also run SFC /SCANNOW, but it identified no issues.

Help to resolve this updating error would be very much appreciated.

Good Afternoon,

I am also having problems installing updates with the error code 80070308.

I have spent this afternoon reading the other posts and following the Windows Update Posting Instructions thread so hopefully I've gathered has much info as I can.

I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool. Once the installation was complete I tried to reinstall the updates. This resulted in the successful installation of: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) but the failed installation of the other 9 updates as before.

Attachment 325390

And I received the following error code.

Attachment 325391

I then carried out the sfc/scannow which all came back OK.

Attachment 325392

I have saved the logs as a zip file but its too big for me to upload (12.5MB)? Any suggestions?

I hope I have not missed anything out. But please bear with me if I have.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Kerry

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=17882

(IATA89ENU.exe)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

For almost a year I haven't been able to download a single update for Windows 7 (Have around 75 pending important updates to download). Sometime ago, I recall stumbling across a backdoor virus on my PC. It prevented me from accessing any of my programs, including the internet. I had to go into safe mode to remove the virus. A few days later I had pending operating system updates. When I went to update, it was unable to even gain access online (my internet connection was fine). Microsoft Security Essentials also, was compromised and unable to update itself. I was able to correct it, though Windows Update has remained the same.

I have attempted to clean-boot up Windows, in hopes that it had been Malware Bytes that was blocking the updates all along. The Updater was able to find out that I had 75 pending updates, though when it went to actually download them, it was unable to and gave me an error code, 80246008. I have seen another post from a user here that had a similar problem, but I'm not sure him and I have the exact issue. (Windows 7 cannot check for updates & error 0x80070002)

For a week now, I have been calling all around Denver, trying to fix this problem. I have read the help that I can find, but unless you are a really high level techie, it is difficult to understand. When I click on the Vista button asking if I want to search for updates, I get a dialogue box that says I need to install new software in order to update. Windows Updater will close and reopen. Every time I do that, I end up with the error message found in the title of this thread. I tried removing my AVG Anti-Virus software and then tried to update. One piece of advice said to try this. It made no difference. Whatever I do, I am always unable to update, at least in the last two weeks. It was working until the last update I installed. I believe that was on September 28th. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Found the following on microsoft.com-

Subject: RE: windows vista update error code c015001a 8/24/2007 10:30 AM PST

By: fruman44 In: microsoft.public.windowsupdate
Well, I fixed my problem. This has been frustrating, I'm glad its working
now! In short, here's what I did:

1. Formatted my Windows partition.
2. Reinstalled to this partition.
3. Logged in as a user, and then rebooted several times without doing
anything else, to ensure that all the Windows system and temp files are
created properly (rather than logging into an account and having it created
the user folders/files right then).
4. Right clicked on Windows Update --> Ran as Administrator (even though
my account was already an administrator).

It worked!

I think that perhaps in earlier attempts I had several other processes
running and the computer would lock up, so I would have to do a HARD reboot.
I bet there must be a Windows Update that fixes some driver problem,
instability problem with my installation (which has hence been installed,
naturally).
Doing the HARD reboot would not cleanly unmount the filesystem, and I think
Windows Update must like a clean filesystem (even though chkdsk would never
run upon the next reboot, making me think that all was okay...). Having an
unclean filesystem might cause Windows Update into loop somehow.

Anyway, try the steps above, I bet they will work for you too.
peace,
RF

I have about 15 laptops running Windows 7 Pro SP1 (brand new, just out of the box).  I've been able to install quite a few updates on about 3 of them (just started working on them).  However, now, I'm getting error code 80200011 when I attempt
to install additional "required" updates.
I've tried clearing the BITS queue, deleting softwaredistribution folder and ran SFC and nothing came up as being an issue.  I've searched the net on this issue, but there doesn't appear to be much on this specific problem.  These systems
are behind a proxy server.  I have other (XP, Windows 2003) systems that are able to update, but is there an issue between WIn 7 and some proxy servers?  If so, why would I be able to install some updates?
Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks all.

Hi,
Chek that your proxy is configured correctly, and if you can follow these steps to resolve this issue : stop the Windows Update service and make sure that the "Backround Intelligent Transfer Service" and "Cryptographic service" are started and then go to
C:\Windows and rename the software distribution folder to UpdateOLD , and finally restart the Windows Update Service

Hello Everyone,

My Windows 7 has been working perfect for the last few months, but recently I upgraded to a faster internet package and started receiving the following error code whenever doing Windows Update:

80072F8F

I tried googling and messing / updating my system clock and a few other tasks to no avail, anyone able to solve this issue successfully?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
