Test Encryption Protection

Q: Test Encryption Protection

Is there any reliable free Encryption tool to test if the installed Anti Ransomware is working on file servers?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone,
A month ago I installed Dell Data Protection | encryption (enterprise) on my PC to test it before implementing on corporate laptops and it still didn't finish encrypting HDD. It's constantly displaying status "encrypting, sweep in progress". How long does it usually take to encrypt HDD and what can prevent DDP from encrypting HDD?

I am in NO way endorsing this product whatsoever (I am new here, so what the heck do I know?), but I am guessing from the video below this style will be the new way to "prevent" these types of infections from installing in the first place.  What does everyone else think?

At the moment the best thing you can do is keep regular backups, in my experience it only seems to be detected by your antivirus after it has encrypted your files.

I am looking for a decent encryption program or a way to password protect a USB thumbdrive. I've never dealt with encryption before, so any guides or examples would be helpful.

A:USB Encryption/Password Protection

There are quite a number of excellent USB flash drives that are designed for this, but encryption software for generic USB flash drives is trouble in the few systems I have seen... and there are too many ways to get around the encryption. Your unknown invader might not be able to get to your files... or if good, he might. But he can easily get rid of what is on the drive and use it as his own.

If you need to password protect a folder how can you do this - I don't see any options & can't find anything on an internet search other than encrypting the folder - which I would like to avoid unless there is a built-in option (i.e. not keen on downloading
third party software to do so).
If there is an in-built option to encrypt a folder can someone explain the steps.
Even better if there is a simple password protection - again if someone can explain the steps and how to access the settings I would be most grateful!

Hello, before I ask my question I just want to say that I am Security+ certified if that means anything. What I'm trying to say is that I know what encryption is and how it works so I don't need an explanation on that.

My question comes from the fact that I have been using WinRAR for a while now to zip my documents. For the more sensitive documents I have always set a password (password-protected). That's great and all, just like with any password if someone's determined enough they can crack it, but for the most part, unless someone knows the password they can't get in right? Well that's exactly what I want.

Lately I've been playing with Symantec Encryption Desktop and it has a file/folder encryption feature that's pretty neat. It can use public/private keys, passphrase, it can even create a password-protected Self Decrypting Archive. While I know the benefits of encryption; especially sending documents over unsecured channels, the cyphertext would only be "unreadable" because no one knows the password or key. If anyone captures this document and does a rainbow table attack on it they would be able to decypher it pretty much the same way as cracking the password in a password-protected document.

So here's my question, what good is it to encrypt if the same concept of cracking the password can gain an attacker access to my files? Encrypted or not, soon as they get that password they would be able to read it. So really,... Read more

A:Solved: Encryption vs Password Protection

On a slightly different slant here. Encrypting the hard drive is better than just passwording an account, because encryption can foil off-line attacks, like booting up a Linux Live CD and mounting the drive.

I don't know if Winrar encrypts a password protected file or not. What it may be doing is just prompt the user for a password and that password is just something that satisfies the Winrar program. That is to say, if I use a hex editor on the password protected file, can one copy and paste contents into an non-password protected rar file ? If so, that is an off-line attack that bypasses Winrar's access control.

So I would say that encryption is better than just access control.

You may have heard of Truecrypt, which creates encrypted folders. The program is capable of doing 2 factor authentication: requiring a password as well as a key file.

Can anyone explain in layman's terms, why encryption is so much more secure if the encrypted data is only protected using a password. I understand that the data is scrambled, but if all that is needed to access the data is the password, how is that anymore secure than simple password protection.

I'm asking specifically for thumb drives. For example, I have a Corsair FlashVoyager thumb drive that includes a security utility that creates a hidden partition that is password protected. I have another thumb drive where I'm considering using Rohos Mini Drive. The portable version of the software resides on the thumb drive, so that alleviates the need for someone wanting the data to figure out what algorithm and software was used to encrypt the data.

If all that someone would have to do is guess the password ( I understand that this is a huge task in itself), why bother with encryption? The idea is to make the data secure, but accessible as I move from computer to computer.

Hello everyone,
I am not sure if this has already been discussed(cannot find any related link).

The Problem that I have is that my Laptop is encrypted with McAfee EndPoint Encryption Protection and its no longer booting.

The Story so far.
Coming from a long vacation, I put my Laptop to download mail through the night and forgot to plug the Power cable.(The Lid was not closed)

Morning When I woke up, I realized that the battery has run out, so I connected the power supply and tried to do restart the Laptop.

It went straight to repair the windows. No matter what Option I selected(Safe Mode - Safe Mode with Command Prompt - Last Known Good Configuration etc) it would go to repair mode only. So I thought of doing a System Restore, but it kept on saying something like "Choose a Windows Installation to do a System Restore". I promptly restarted again - tapped F8 - Selected the Windows OS ...however again the same thing. I couldn't do a System Restore.

After about 10 restarts, now what is happening is that whenever I boot the system, it takes me a black screen with a Flashing Cursor and nothing else. Now I dont even get the Option to Repair Windows etc.

I took the Laptop to Professionals and they said that since I have McAfee EndPoint Encryption Protection Installed, they cannot break it, being an Industrial Strength Program and that the only Option I now have is to Re-Image the HDD, which I am reluctant to do.

A:Decrypting McAfee Endpoint Encryption Protection

found this thread when searching for such solution ... if your problem is still actual, i could share my findings:

1. Download the WinTech CD from (i didin't find another location to download it)
2. Boot it, change system date to 27 Oct 2009
3. Start the SbWinTech.exe and authenticate with the daily code 1131 for the date given above
4. Enter your user and pass for the encryption
5. Choose Authenticate from SBFS from the menu
6. Mount the encrypted drive (there is such option in the menu)

Now you have access to files, you can back them up on external drive or network share.
You can also choose to decrypt the drive which could cost you a lot of time (took 10 hours for 150GB disk in my test enviroment)

Hope this helps ....

I was wondering if there was a way to test your on demand protection for your anti-virus. Sort of like a leaktest for firewalls, but for your anti-virus...or is this too dangerous as you basically have to download a file that is a virus in order to test this?

A:Is there a way to test you On-Demand protection?

Hi there, the best way to test your AV is to download virus files from Malwarebytes Forum and then execute it to see if your AV catches it. But since it may prove fatal, I'd strongly recommend you to 1st install Shadow Defender - the easiest PC/laptop security and privacy protection tool and then run your C drive in shadow mode so that whatever changes you make or whatever harm the virus causes, a quick feboot and you are back to normal.

AVLab is a Polish-based independent tester of security products. In October 2016 they tested 40 security solutions in their ability to block 28 malicious crypto-ransomeware threats, using Windows 10 Professional x64 systems. You can read an English translation of their results in pdf format here:avlab.pl/.../ENG_2016_ransomware.pdf
Comment:I don't speak Polish, and can't vouch for the "independence" or bonafides of AVLab. They seem legit. My security didn't object to their website, and the pdf file was clean. Interesting results. I'm not aware of any other comparative tests that look at ransomware.

And the next test of Polish AVLab
The threats examined in this report are so-called fileless malware. Although the infection vector usually starts traditionally, i.e. from the delivery of a malicious file to the victim?s computer ? via scam or a drive-by download attack as a result of using an exploit ? this is where the similarities to traditional attacks with files end. The fileless malicious software operates directly in the computer?s internal memory. In this scenario, the activated virus will not be transferred to quarantine by the protecting software as it is not a file, but a set of instructions to be executed, operating on system processes.
Four types of malicious software files with similar instructions were used to check the effectiveness of protecting modules of each tested program.
? M1.bat file included an instruction of virus download via
PowerShell with suitable parameters.
? M2.exe compiled file included similar instructions.
? M3.exe file was subjected to code obfuscation.

PowerShell with relevant parameters.Click to expand...

Twenty-one security products, including free and paid AVs, suites and business end point protection were tested.
The Malware Protection Test is an enhancement of the File Detection Test which was performed in previous years. This Malware Protection Test checks not only the detection rates of the participating programs, but also their protection capabilities, i.e. the ability to prevent a malicious program from actually makingchanges to the system. The test set used for this test consisted of 37,999 malware samples, assembled after consulting telemetry data with the aim of including recent, prevalent samples that are endangering users in the field. The tests were performed on a 64-Bit Microsoft Windows 10 Professional system. Both online and offline detection rates, and false positive detections are reported.
Results, in pdf format, are here:www.av-comparatives.org/.../avc_mpt_201703_en.pdf
All products detected/protected greater than 99% of threats. Not surprising, when so many samples were used, the majority of which would be known to the vendors.
The free AVs (Panda, Avast, AVG and Windows Defender) all held their own against the paid products/suites. Windows Defender had no false positives, followed closely by Panda Free AV with only one FP.

A:AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test March 2017

Some more comments:
1) Panda Free did extremely well in the ONLINE aspects of this test --- even [a tad] better than avast/avg.   However, being a CLOUD-based antivirus, it was severely hampered when limited to its offline-only capability.   Anyone who doesn't have a decent internet connection (which hopefully is a rare condition nowadays) should keep this in mind.
2) The numbers for avg & avast were IDENTICAL throughout this test.   This should not come as a surprise, since avast acquired avg, and has been combining their background features, including sharing a common definition database.   Apparently, the only significant difference between avast and avg is cosmetic:  their appearance via their user interface.   avast/avg performed well even in offline-only mode.   But they did suffer from more than just "a few" false positives... which resulted in their test-rating being lowered to "advanced" (vs. Panda's "advanced+").
3) While Microsoft had no F/P's, its detection/protection numbers placed it in statistical "cluster 3", which clearly separates it (at least, in terms of this particular test) from Panda, avast & avg, which were all grouped together in [the highest] "cluster 1".

Good morning/afternoon/evening gentleman, wherever you are around the globe.

Today, after startup, Windows suggested to me, that I should export my encryption case to some external storage, just in case some bad things happen.

I was surprised, as I haven't enabled any encryption on my laptop.
Or maybe I was wrong, thinking that encryption = BitLocker.

Quick search in Control Panel reveals there is also a setting in User Accounts section named "Manage file encryption certificates".

I haven't enabled encryption in any folder/file using it's Properties window.

So why this "export your keys" option? I don't remember that from Windows 7.

I would be great if someone explained that to me, as I've never used encryption before (since I don't need it).
Also, is cloud storage like SkyDrive/DropBox an appropriate place to store that files?

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.
