Repair Function - Majority Unwanted Changes

Q: Repair Function - Majority Unwanted Changes

Hello everyone

I decided to make this post because I used to have a lot of problems with xp logo. Somehow it look like, with help of google, I fixed it but it doesn't work as it should, so I would like to kindly please for your help.
Here is description:
About a week and a half ago when I boot my PC (no matter from restart or from turning PC on), it used to freeze when XP Logo appeared on the screen. Everything I have done (before this began) was uninstalling, reinstalling and using once Spybot Search & Destroy. Progress bar stopped in the middle of "filling". I haven't been able to come to the desktop. I couldn't use safe mode and I was getting the error message:
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previouns setup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally.
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked).
Start Windows normally."

Bootable Windows XP (I had SP2) always worked.
However I fixed this problem with Windows Repair (NOT recovery console) function. I am able to come to desktop but I have some majority unwanted changes. I will mentoin few of them that are the following:

- few icons on the desktop changed to the "unknown shortcuts" icons (in case if i didn't describe it well - this icon for example appears when you delete specific program and the shortcut stays but i didn't delete anything)
- few icons on the desktop are gone
- our national windows xp language pack is changed to English one
- SP2 is changed to SP1 (SP which comes with installation / repairing)
- around 70% of entries in menu Start\Programs are gone
- folder Program Files (C:\Program Files) is duplicated (another one contains software that is installed with windows XP OS by default)
- browser Internet Explorer is on automatical startup (when WinXP does, never been like that before)
- first menu which opens when pressing on Start button (in taskbar) looks different
- in the main folder "C:\" appeared (and it is still there) a subfolder called "1bc5c6aab554fb9240b174dc". This subfolder (or with other words folder C:\1bc5c6aab554fb9240b174dc) is totally beyond me. I know absolutelly nothing about it and why is it there. It contains exsactly 2933 files and 102 folders also the main folder"i386".
- driver for webcam is gone
and so on
I want to get my system back even if most of files (100% of the files for which i have been the most worried) are still on the hard drive.

I would like to please for an answer, my question is, how could i remove the changes, with other words how could I make a recovery? I was thinking about menu Start / Programs / Accesories / System Tools / System Restore but im afraid this wouldn't remove the changes, specially not duplicated Program Files folder - it is very annoying having twice similar software on the harddrive. Im also very very worried that XP logo would freeze again so Im afraid to make System Restore even if I would be able to find the backup hard drive (image) folder that would backup at the same time as burning it on the cd or dvd.

Again, I look forward to, please, receive some reply on my issue, so I could fix it with your help.

Thank you very much and have a great time everyone.

p.s.: I apologize for my bad English language.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Is there a general repair tool I can try before I reformat?

A:XP - Is there a Repair function?

well, the xp cd has the repair stuff on it you could try(if its not booting properly or at all). Dont know exactly what it does but i know its there. You just pop the cd in, start up the computer(make sure it boots off of cd ie cd before ide-0 in bios) and pretend your making a fresh install and somewhere along the way it will ask if you want to fix a current xp install(or something like that). Hope this helps

Cannot Repair Windows 7, 64 bit, with Disk provided with computer.

My problem started with right clicking on a remote drive and hoping to view the Properties of the drive. I got that infamous "Windows explorer has stopped working" message.

I tried most of the solutions listed on the forum to no avail.

As a last resort I was going to use the disk provided and access the repair capability. That did come up but when selected I got the message "This version of System Recovery Options in not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows".

Has anyone run into this? Other than the above everything seems to function OK.

I do use MS Security Essentials and Spybot Home.

Thanks in advance

A:Win 7 Disk Repair Function Don't Work

Is the system failing to start now? What messages are you getting at startup?

Is this a pre-built system or a home built PC? If it's pre-built (DELL, HP, etc) turn off the PC and restart, as soon as you turn the power on press F8 repeatedly until you get to the alternate boot menu. There should be an option to Repair Computer which should allow you to access the repair function.

Hey guys... I have some problems with IE6.0... it won't let me log into my web-based email accounts...

I keep getting an "intrusion detected" notices (even if I ask to "expire page views" at login).

so I want to REPAIR IE6.0 using the ADD/REMOVE option in Control Panel, and then Click REPAIR.

I tried to re-install IE6.0 from the Add/Remove Programs dialogue.... BUT my computer came pre-installed with IE6.0 (I'm using windows XP), so the Add/Remove IE6.0 option is not there.

So how do I start the Repair IE6.0 option if the Uninstall/Add/Remove button is not there????

Please help.

A:How do you start IE6.0 REPAIR Function in Windows XP???

There isn't a IE repair option with XP/6.0.

But what are these 'intrusion notices' you're receiving?
They probably don't point to anything being wrong with IE itself.

I have a version of windows XP Home where the boot up is corrupted or damaged. What happens is that the system trys to reboot when it gets to the screen that indicates that it has not been properly shut down.

As there are some personal files on the drive I want to keep I have been trying to use the Windows XP Home Edition Repair function.

I have been trying to use the command to restore the files that I found in Windows XP Professional Help

"msiexec /f[p][o][e][d][c][a][m][v]"

When I try this command the system doesn't recognize it.

The system has a NTFS File system so a boot disk to read my files hasn't helped me

Does Windows XP Home have a different command for this function?

Any help I can get to resolve this problem and recover my personal files would be much appreciated.

From what I know, the repair function is automatic and can not be turned off. The only solution I can give you is to contact Microsoft and see if they have the file you need.

My son recently bought himself Skyrim for his HP Probook4525a laptop (which he also bought himself, so it's not top of the line). He said that it doesn't play well, glitches or freezes. He has tried reinstalling it a couple of times.

I see that it requires 2gb ram, but his laptop shows 1.8gb. So I assumed that means I should add ram. My brother told me he needs a new hard drive or video card. How the heck do you know what to add or change?

I tried scanning at crucial.com but after I open the download nothing happens. No results, nothing.

A:How do I know what to upgrade/repair on laptop for game to function well?

using the laptop in question go here; http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
select Skyrim from the games menu and run a test. It will point out the areas that fall short. (with the java problems of late, you may want to download and install the test scanner if you have Java disabled)

also, the 1.8 gigs shown does mean 2 gigs. just the way computers read the bits and stuff. Also might not be showing the chunk of Ram it took for video memory. (All depends on what is in the system specs.)
More ram would help, but for heavy 3D games usually a graphics card is the best option.

Think TSG has a system analyzer, might want to run that on the laptop so we can see what is in it.

I started up my laptop the other morning an just as windows is loading a BSOD flashes for a millisecond and then the computer restarts. It did this 5 times in a row before I finally gave up. I found the windows vista cd that came with the computer and booted from it. Once the DVD loaded I clicked accept and it took me straight to a new install with no repair function which should be included on the recovery disc. I rebooted multiple times, here is no repair option. To make matters worse, I only have 5.9 gigs free on my hd and vista requires 6.6 to install. The only option I have is to reformat the drive, which is out of the question as I have lots of documents saved that I cannot lose. So at the moment the recovery DVD is useless to me, and I cannot load windows to delete some files to make room for a new install.

I took a video of the loading screen and was able to pause it at the frame when the BSOD flashes, here is the stop message: STOP: 0xc0000005, 0x00000200, 0x83354964.

I tried removing one stick of ram at a time thinking maybe one had gone bad it didn't make a difference. I'm at a loss right now. No matter how I try to load windows, safe mode, etc, I get a BSOD and it restarts, and my windows recovery DVD is useless with my hd nearly full.

A:BSOD during startup, no repair function on recovery cd

Nobody? There's no way to delete files/folders without using the command prompt on the recovery disc?

This really makes no sense and I'm beyond frustrated. Why is there no repair selection when I boot from the vista DVD.

Dear Everyone,

Sorry to trouble all of you, but I've pretty much exhausted my google-fu. Thus, I figured that I should stop trying to throw things against the wall, and rather just see if there's someone wiser here who can help me out. Now, before you tell me, I am totally aware that I could easily cut my losses just by doing a re-install, which would make the Windows.Old folder and such, most of which can be easily put back via a command prompt script. However, being that this computer has software whose installation disks I do not have, I do NOT want to do a re-install, since it'll break program association and possibly other things which I cannot correct by re-installing them.

As far as I know, the machine in question is a Dell XPS M1530, with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250, Nvidia 8400M GS, 2GB RAM, and WD Scorpio Blue 250GB Hard Drive. It is running Windows 7 Ultimate, upgraded from Vista Home Premium, with all updates, software patches, and security fixes current according to Windows Update. As far as virus and malware goes, it has ESET NOD32 v4.7, Malware Bytes, and Spybot-S&D installed, with each being fully updated and scans immediately prior to the crash stating that the machine was clean. In addition, after the crash, I attempted to scan it with Avira, Dr. Webb, and Hiren's Boot CD, all of which stated that the machine is free of infection/threat.

Hey folks!

Hope you can help me out here, i'm unsure what the problem may be with my computer.
A few weeks ago, while playing a game, the game froze and would constantly switch between the desktop and the game itself. this would continue to happen until i shut the game with the task manager. The crash would happen at random, sometimes 2mins into a game, sometimes 2hours. Also once this crash has happened once it will continue to happen the second i reload a new game and so the only solution soo far has been to restart my computer. cpu temps are stable
It appears to be happening with all my games:
TES Oblivion
Battlefield 2
Counterstrike source. . . to name a few

Age of empires seems to work but that game is ancient now lol

Currently i have tried updating my graphics drivers and updating directx 10 and whatever essential updates for vista.

Here is my specs:
Vista Home premium x64
Q6600 2.4GHz (oc 2.7GHz)

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

A:Majority of Games Crashing Vista x64??

Some of those games are DX 9 not 10 while compatible with Vista as well as XP. On the 32bit edition one thing first seen is simply installing DX 9 onto Vista since it will still work. See if getting 9 on the 64bit edition helps.

The other problem typically seen with any persistent game crashes is wrapped around both video and sound drivers. Display being video while crashes when a certain sound file in a game causes a crash are common even in 32bit editions.

But many claim all their games run on the 64bit editions without problems? har! I think you can tell them something a little different is what you are seeing there. That would be expecting all 16bit games and apps to run on a 32bit Windows. The games are still 32bit going on a 64bit OS.

So the 3 basics besides any problems being seen with the physical memory installed as one other thought would be with the video and sound drivers seeing a problem and possibility seeing things improve adding DX 9 on. Once the sound is working on the Windows 7 64bit beta here a few games and DX 9 are one item that will be looked into.

i first noticed this problem trying to play my online games. Every one of them would not connect to whatever site it required to use. The majority of sites (the only exception being Google) would refuse to load. The specific error was a timed out error. I am currently running a scan of my system for malware. This is the first time this problem has happened. This does occoured with all of the browsers I currently have installed (chrome and Firefox). As it type the scan has completed and it hasn't helped. I am using widows 7 and am connected to a router.

A:The majority of games lock my computer...

Have you defragged your computer since you bought it ? I don't think this is a mobo and graphics card conflict.

Most games move files back and forth between the server and the pc. When I play Everquest often, I have to defrag more often.

My computer slows way down, and can lock up, when I haven't defragged it recently.

A:What's the best Radeon Driver? I want a majority answer.

??? What difference does it make?

Your talking about a card that you wont have for another 2 months, there maybe 2 more driver releases before you plug that into something.

You're not going to get a "majority" answer for a $400 video card here. You need to go to the ATI newsgroups for that.

Not all FX cards sucks. ATI's weakness is their OpenGL. Generally, ATI is faster.

I started with a fresh install of Win7 Ultimate on the laptop I am using, and quickly noticed that there is a delay of ~5-10 seconds any time I try to do any action which reads from the hard drive. Starting new programs is the most affected. I've also noticed that programs I have open already, such as my instant messenger, will play sounds in a very delayed fashion as well. I will send a message and the "message sent" sound will play much later, after I'm already doing something else. If I leave my music player for a bit and then try to play a song, I have the same issue.

It seems like any I/O to the hard disk is being delayed by some arbitrary amount of time. This is very noticeable and I'm wondering what I can do to work this out. I've disabled a few services and made sure my background processes weren't using up too much memory/cpu.

A:Huge access delay for majority of files

Try this first. Open an elevated command prompt (start-type cmd in the search box-right click-select run as administrator) When the command prompt opens copy and paste this into the window sfc /scannow that is a system file checker. It will test the integrity of system files and repair them if it can. If it comes back and says it found no integrity issues you will be reasonably assured that the OS is OK. Next download the diagnostic program from the manufacturers website for whatever brand of hard drive you have. It is also possible you have a virus. Download Malwarebytes - free and install it and run a complete scan of your computer. Let us know the results of those tests.
Also, it is helpful to us if you fill out your system specs. It helps us know what hardware we are dealing with so we can help you better.

At the time of your task mgr screen shot, did you have 19 Chrome windows open? (Seems clear whatever malware you have is using some sort of Chrome add-on as an entry point of attack)

I'd start with AdwCleaner at www.bleepingcomputer.com

We have a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop running Vista. Everything seems in good running order, scans and hardware checks all come out clean, but suddenly the majority of keyboard keys stopped working. Can anyone give me a clue as to why this happened and what I can do to find the solution? Thank you for any help you can give me.

I am extremely desperate to fix this problem D:

I have ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow etc. and removed any potentially damaging security and replaced with Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also removed temp files and defragged etc.

I also previously ran a Memtest a few months back because 1 of my 2 sticks of RAM severely F'd up however these aren't the same BSoD's neither are they as frequent so I'm guessing my RAM is still fine..

Please Help :3

Greetings all.
So glad a place like this exists.

I get BSOD some days, not at all, some days up to 7 times in a day.
I guess it does seem more common if I am playing facebook games, or playing youtube video
it can be on a fresh boot, before even logging in.

I have
-gone through windows/microsoft updates
-gone through the Dell Command updates
-had 2 sticks of RAM, different speed and different manufacturer - now Ram is same/same
-sfc /scannow (had some stuff it did not fix)

grabbed a file someone else uploaded and viewed the reply they got, trying to find where that answer came from

still not sure what to do/where to go with this.

*I did have to crash my AV to get the BSOD tool to work correctly on my system

thank you for your time

A:BSOD - unidentified cause NTOSKRNL.exe majority of error messages

here's what i have:
Usual causes: Memory, Paging file corruption, File system, Hard drive, Cabling, Virus infection, Improperly seated cards, BIOS, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack
we can rule out the last one because you went through all the updates, memory is out as well because you have tested that already, this leaves pagig file corruption, filesystem, hard drive, cabln, virus and inproperl seated cards and bad mobo, i think it may be a ard drive corruption because of this line:

Is this what the future has come to? When I have a fatal problem with my OS I have to start all over again? XP repair install is way better than this.

A:Is 'Upgrade install even meant to function as a repair install at all?

In Windows 7, a repair install is also known as an "in-place upgrade install". This tutorial explains how to perform a repair install and also shows how to obtain a legal installation disk if one is needed.

Repair Install

I've successfully repaired several Windows 7 machines and in each case it took less than 90 minutes. After completing the process it will be necessary to reinstall Windows Updates. That could take another 90 minutes or more depending on how many updates are available.

Some folks prefer doing a clean install just to get rid of the factory bloatware and start off with a wiped hard drive. One of the Forum experts prepared a tutorial on how to clean reinstall a factory OEM machine.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

And the basic clean install tutorial.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: it fixed itself. I have no idea what, how or why. o_o thanks anyway!

To begin with, I'm on a Compaq Presario CQ60 on Vista Home Basic, SP1. My hard disk (250gb) is partitioned into a single C drive and a 10gb backup D drive which was there when I bought the laptop.

Okay, so the problem is that I was going to defrag today, but I was then prompted my hard disk was nearly full, which was odd considering I was nowhere near full last time I checked. So I looked into it and couldn't find anything until I had a look with WinDirStat and got:
, http://i49.tinypic.com/2qxsy39.jpg visually

The full path of this file is

Which points at the recycle bin, but it's empty... which is where I'm stumped. WinDirStat offers an option of deleting this file... I'm asking you guys is that safe? I personally have no idea what a random 120gb .dat file is doing... I was thinking it's a collection of everything deleted from the recycle bin, but surely that wouldn't count as used-up disk space?

I don't know, hopefully you guys know an approach for getting rid of this. Thanks a million!

A:Majority of hard disk taken up by 120gb .dat file... safe to just delete?

have you made an image of your hard disk or asked a program to back up your computer?

if you download 'ccleaner' from here http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

install it and ask it to 'analzye' see it ip picks up on the file.

i would advise backing up any important data on your computer, (documents, pictures, music)

I defrag every now and then and when i went to do it this time i noticed that almost all of the hard disk was "system files". Its never been like this.

Is there a way to fix this, OR is it even a problem at all?

Hello and good morning. I'm new to this forum. I hope I can find answers here, as well as be of help myself.

I'm actually a computer technician with over 15 years in the field, but this is happening on the new desktop case I built for myself, to replace my main desktop and turn the old one into another workshop computer.

And as you can expect, I've done my fair share of diagnosing this new build before bothering you people with my problems.

Please bear with me. This is pretty lengthy. But I prefer being fastidious with the details, than leaving out something potentially significant.

I'll clarify the following about my hardware:

1) AMD FX-6300 Six-Core (125W)

CPU is second-hand. But as we all know, it's extremely rare that a CPU would have an actual hardware issue. Compared to the amount of issues that can arise from the rest of the components, at least.

Currently it's using an AMD cooler that is better than the one that comes with the CPU itself. Copper base and heat pipes, 3300RPM running constantly. Thermal paste is the standard kind, but it works for most situations.

I've observed temperatures over and over, and never noticed anything unusual using CPUID's HWMonitor.

EXCEPT for the TMPIN1 sensor always showing a significantly higher temp than the rest, 58-59 Celsius (138 F). While the package temperature tends to be 27-30 C (79-86 F), and TMPIN0 and 2 are around 33-37 C (91-98 F). That's while idle or working at an easy pace. When I push it with ... Read more

A:Seemingly random BSOD, majority of possibilities supposedly ruled out.

UPDATE: After days of scarce and light computer usage, but with the computer almost always on, I had another crash. This is in the first Windows 7 install, which I describe in more detail in the first post.

Despite of all the other crashes happening outside video playback scenarios, it's looking more and more like a video issue. First, because of how it would crash every time I tried playing that video, as I described before. The only reliable way to cause a crash I had.

And now, as I was just starting to buffer and play a Youtube video, it happened again. With a stop error code that is different from all previous ones. That is a clear tendency as well.

I never had any actual issues with this video card while I had it in the older computer (which runs XP SP3).

I have the very latest official drivers installed, and I'm using the HDMI output on 1920x1080 (native resolution).

I attach the new log. Remember, the first two crashes included are already in the first post. This new crash is a code "D1."

Thanks again in advance.

Hey guys,
I've got a bit of a problem here. I got this malware virus attack earlier today (i'm pretty sure it's something to do with google redirect and similar stuff), I went through a couple of steps that I found here and I think I managed to successfully get rid of it. However, majority of my files and folders got hidden and the deletion of the virus itself did not brought them back. I was just wondering whether it might be the case that I have to somehow unhide them manually..but then how do I do this? There are hidden files that are supposed to be hidden, so how do I unhide only the ones that were visible before the malware attack? Thanks for your comments.

Here's the deal - I have a quick shortcut to my C drive on the desktop, so that I can just double-click it and go straight to browsing my files. However, today, the search function decided to make itself the primary function. When I double-click it now, it opens a search window instead of the C: drive.

Can someone tell me how to make it so double-clicking it will, by default, use the "open" function instead of "search?" Thanks in advance!

I've been unable to access my custom build computer since around 5:00 yesterday. I chose to restart my computer at around that time just because it was slowing up a little and I usually do that to help, I had not installed any updates or new programs since 2 days ago when there had been a few windows updates.

Upon returning to my computer I noticed that it had been unable to startup and had gone straight into system repair with it being 'unable to repair this computer automatically.' I rebooted several times and noticed that it was not a visible BSOD but as soon as the 'starting windows' icon began to appear it went straight into startup repair. I tried to boot into safe mode, tried to load previous good configuration and all of the other advanced recovery options (including system restore/image and many command prompts).

This is what it shows after being unable to repair automatically:
