ActionTec MI424WR Verizon FIOS & Secure IMAP & Secure POP3

Q: ActionTec MI424WR Verizon FIOS & Secure IMAP & Secure POP3

I am trying to make an secure POP3 (port 995) and secure IMAP (port 993) connection thru Verizon FIOS via the ActionTec MI424WR modem/router/802.11G box that Verizon supplied. I am running Vista, and I am using Outlook 2007, which is set to these ports.

I wanted to do this with the firewall set to the "Maximum Security (High)" setting.

These ports were not available in the ActionTec's pick list so I added these ports (using the "Advanced" tab and then under "Protocols") so they read "TCP any -> 993" and "TCP any -> 995"

I tried adding these ports to the "Access Control" table, and the "Port Forwarding" table and the "Advanced Filtering" table but none worked.

The Verizon Tech Support line worker told me the only solution was to enable the DMZ host and set it to be the IP address of the computer I happened to be on.

To my astonisment, with DMZ enabled, the "Access Control" rules seemed to kick in for the DMZ host and my secure POP3 would only work if I had this port allowed in the "Access Control" table.

1. Is it safe to run with DMZ pointing to my computer.

I thought this effectively brought the "DMZ host" (i.e. my computer) outsied the firewall and exposed all the ports on my computer directly to the internet. (But if that were the case, then

2. why does the Access Control table work only to the DMZ host???

3. How do I make the "Access Control" (or any of the other tables) work for my other computers in my home network?

I want all my other computers to be able to use secure IMAP and secure POP3. (Not just the one computer that is the DMZ-host.

4. Is Verizon blocking Secure IMAP from working? What must be done to get secure IMAP working?

Secure IMAP does not work under any settings -- even to DMZ host with the firewall set to the Minimum Security (Low) setting.

5. How do I get secure SSL SMTP to my secured office email system? Is this blocked by Verizon FIOS?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

DMZ does indeed expose the computer directly to the outside world, that's why it's called the DMZ!

Do you have residential or commercial FiOS? There are blocked ports for the residential service.

I just moved to Verizon FIOS area and the guy installed Actiontec MI424WR wireless broadband router/modem. Upgraded with firmware Anyway I'm subscribed to Residential plan 5/2mbps.

In my previous apartment I was using Linksys WRT54GS with firmware DD-WRT v23 SP2 with no additional modem since it's a university housing, I love the features of DD-WRT firmware and all my servers, port forwarding etc are set quite easily IMO.

After a few weeks tweaking the Actiontec, I can't figure out how to make http port 80 to work, so I thought I better switch to WRT54GS and stop wasting my time. Btw, port 80 is opened but only accessible via LAN, not internet. Called FIOS tech support and they said since I'm using residential plan, my IP is dynamic and it's a no-no. Well, my internet IP hasn't change since day 1. I also read some posts that port 80 is blocked but the tech guy said otherwise. hmm... Btw, opening other ports are fine.

Anyway, is the MI424WR a better wireless router compared to WRT54GS/DD-WRT? Should I try harder tweaking the MI424WR or try to bridge both? I prefer using the linksys since all settings (wireless wep, client mac list, port forwarding etc) are still there.

I received a new router from Verizon MI424WR, when I connect my old laptop Thinkpad Z61t with the wire to the router, I can have the internet, but when I tried to connect it with the wireless I can't do so, even when I open the "find wireless networks" with the ThinkVantage. I can see the full range with 100% strength, but I connect it and it failed and disconnect me....

I heard that the new router is for digital fios and it is not competitive with it, is it true or not? How can I correct it? or download anything to make it works? Before I had an old one that they gave me since I signup for the fios years ago, it connect with the wireless with any problem at all...... What should I do now? Any idea would appreciate very much.

I connect my new laptop with Win7 and I don't have any problem..... Thanks for all the ideas or help that I can get.

Just upgraded to Verizon FIOS and had an Actiontec MI424WR Rev F router (firmware v.20.10.7) supplied. Went to white-list my ereader's MAC in router and intitial page asked me to change the default login and password which I planned to do anyway. I know what I changed them to. Made changes, logged out, then decided I really wasn't comfortable with WEP and went back to change it to WPA. All I got was "Login failed, please try again." Finally hit the reset button and started over at the "please change login and password" screen. I can get in then.

I've been through this six times now and cannot get past the initial login without a hard reset. Tried keeping "admin" as the login because I have met peripherials that are touchy about that. Not a major issue now that I have the router set up to my satisfaction, but it frustrates me to not have password access to any part of my system. (Yes, I am that anal.) Anyone know what is going on?

Again, I don't need the default passwords because I know what I entered and anyway they don't work either.

Had similar frustration with a Belkin router. I finally gave up and used a shorter password and that worked.

i have a new FIOS connection with a Actiontec MI424WR router. I need to create a wireless bridge to the Actiontec router. I bought a Linksys WAP54g and found out that it will only connect to another WAP54g or a WRT54G in the repeater mode. What other product will help me make a wireless bridge to the Actiontec router?

A:Wireless Bridge for Actiontec MI424WR

You may be able to use the DD-WRT 3rd party firmware to expand the capability of that WAP54g. The Linksys firmware may work with other brand hardware, but as you say, they don't push that capability.

That message 99.9% of the time is telling you that your ISP E-Mail server is down for some reason.
Wouldn't be concerned about it unless it happens quite often and then you should be calling the ISP to ask what is up with the E-Mail server!!

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Both are followed by specific connection and encryption information, i.e. TLS 1.2.

hello, i used acronis true image and disk director suite and successfully cloned and backup disks many times. recently i installed pgp enterprise to secure the disk. as fate would have it i decided to increase the secure zone partition. the operating system on boot prompted for pgp password to decrypt the drive and then acronis loaded and i used the partition management option. the partition limit of secure zone was enhanced from 55 gb to 61 gb (limit being shown as 69gb). the three steps that appeared were C drive size being fixed from 55 gb to 45 gb, D drive (which was pgp secured) was shown to be going NO change and the third step was the Secure Zone expanding from 45 GB to 51 gb or so. when all the steps were done, the system booted. as always the first prompt was PGP secure disk, i entered the password but the second prompt for Acronis halted and Displayed a fatal error and asked to press enter to attempt to boot the OS. On pressing Enter the system booted and the OS was normal EXCEPT that the D drive was being shown as Raw (i.e. needed to formatted). On inspecting the D drive with Acronis disk manager the three partitions were visible the C and Secure zone with the newly allocated disk space but the D was being shown as RAW Although the D disk size was being shown as before, i.e. 45 GB. All assets are resided in the D drive. Please advise how to recover or restore the partitions.

In my Home Office using my Notebook and wireless router I have WEP encryption with a Network security key. But I am often away on the road in Asia and I connect to both unsecured and WEP secured wireless networks in restaurants, hotels and internet cafes.

When I need to log in to certain web sites to attend to important personal info like bank accounts and credit cards and make payments etc I often avoid it for fear of this information being visible or accessible to others, even on the WEP secured ones.

I 'm wondering though, if it shows the connection as WEP secured in Manage Wireless Connections, does that mean things are secure or can other people using the same wireless pick up on what others around them are sending and receiving?

I guess what I am asking is, how can I know if a wireless connection is safe on the road and is there anything I can do to make it safe or safer? I suspect many others encounter this same issue.

Incredible, I had cable internet with RCN for a few years with zero problems, but I could not leave well enough alone and decided to switch to FIOS. My RCN set up was a cable modem router with a MS wireless router in one of the LAN ports. Signal was fair to great all over my 2,200 s.f. house. I am not technically savy but can follow directions. FIOS came with their Actiontech router and I could only hold a signal within about twenty feet of the router even when it said I had a strong signal. Very frustrating.

I have been dealing with this issue for over a week. I downloaded new drivers, bought and returned a new wireless card, changed channels on the router, turned the firewall off, turned the firewall on, surfed tech forums endlessly. I was going to hire someone to come to the house. I spoke with Verizon tech support five times. Verizon tried to blame it on my cordless phone. It is their Actiontech wireless router. I finally took my four year old MS router with a tiny antenna, turned off the wireless on the Actiontech router and easily got OK to great reception throughout the house. It was basically plug and play. All I had to do was enter the WEP key. Funny, I almost threw away the MS router after FIOS was installed. Good thing I held on to it.

Secure computers aren't so secure.

Even well-defended computers can leak shocking amounts of private data. MIT researchers seek out exotic attacks in order to shut them down.

The encryption system that Tromer was attacking, called AES, was particularly vulnerable because it used tables of precalculated values as a computational short cut, so that encoding and decoding messages wouldn’t be prohibitively time consuming. Since Tromer and his colleagues published their results, Intel has added hardware support for AES to its chips, so that Internet encryption software won’t have to rely on such “lookup tables.”

In a statement, Intel told the MIT News Office that its decision “was mainly motivated by the performance/efficiency benefits achieved,” but that “in addition, there is a potential security benefit since these new instructions can mitigate the possibility of software side channel attacks on AES that have been described in research papers, including those discovered by Tromer, Percival, and Bernstein.”Click to expand...

Ok, now how old is my chip and does it have the Intel hardware support for AES? Gulp!

-- Tom

P.S. I will try to find out which chip series have the hardware support for AES and post it here - but, if you find out before I do, please do not hesitate to post the information yourself. Is it time to get a new motherboard already, or will my current motherboard be able to accept the chips with AES hardware support?

Hi Adams369 If you are using Google Chrome 42, this is normal. Starting in version 42, Google Chrome starts tagging as "insecure" websites that uses SHA-1 algorithm encryption for their certificates, in order to move them to a more secure one since SHA-1 is old and deprecated (less secure). If you want, I created a thread on that yesterday where I show how to get these certificates information on a website, so you can verify yourself. Up until about two weeks ago, my Actiontec router has been working fine. I was able to connect to it from anywhere inside my house, and even ten to fifteen feet outside. But now, I can hardly connect to it from fifteen feet away from the router itself! Out of the blue, its broadcast range and connection quality (I guess you could call it) decreased dramatically. I was playing CoD MW2 on my Xbox 360 and it told me that my NAT was set to strict. Up until then it had always been on open. I am currently about ten feet away from the router posting this question, and my signal strength is at one bar. As far as I know, the only setting that was changed recently was the WEP key. But I'm pretty sure that's not something that should affect the broadcasting of a signal. I'm not sure exactly which model Actiontec router it is. I've tried turning it off and on, putting aluminum foil around the antennae to boost the signal, and moving it around the room it was installed in, but nothing seems to work. I'd REALLY appreciate any help I can get

I'd start by changing the wireless channel. Maybe some other wireless device or a neighbor with a wireless network is stepping on the channel you're currently using.

I placed the following post on another forum:
I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Dimension 4550 and deleted the Windows XP OS. I have a Verizon Actiontec M1424 modem that was working fine before I installed Ubuntu. I have several laptops and other wireless devices using the modem and they are working fine.

My Dell is hardwired (CAT5) into the modem. After the install I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Connections. When the window opened up with the "Wired" tab I saw "Auto eth0". So when I click on edit, it asks for the "Device MAC address" which I assume is the modem's MAC address. Then it asks for the "Clone MAC address". I have no idea what that is but I re-entered the modem's MAC address. I still had no internet connection.

The other tabs were 802.1x, IPv4, and IPv6. If my memory serves me correct, I don't need to worry about entering any information on those because I think those deal with network security for a wireless connection.

Since I just installed Ubuntu, I re-installed it to ensure I did nothing wrong. I went through the same procedure and got the same results; no internet connection. What do I need to do? Verizon refuses to help saying, "It's not the modem since the other devices are working and we don't support Linux."

I am not totally familiar with vi, so if I have to edit a script please realize you are dealing with a novice.

I just ordered Verizon Fios, it works fine, both wireless and plug in on my mac, but I can't figure out how to set it up on my roommates laptop. It's a Gateway, not terribly old I think. The people that scammed my roommate into buying this comp for 3x what it's worth screwed up the set up bad, they installed the desktop version of the software instead of the laptop version so it has no clue it's a laptop, when it closes it shuts down, and it has to be plugged in (it doesn't realize it has a battery so it doesn't attempt to charge) anyway, I'm fairly skilled with windows, I work with windows, and used windows in school, but this appears to be set up retro or something, I can't find any way to make it work with anything except non-wireless dial-up. It doesn't seem to know there is anything else, and doesn't have any options in the control panel to set something up (other then dial up) either. Anyone know what to do?

I'm looking for folks that have actually installed Verizon FiOS service and can comment on how it went.

They "require" you to use their router, which kinda' makes me wonder. Is the configuration "locked down" so you can't access the configuration?

They state that you can have four wired connections and "many" wireless ones. Now, I'm not sure how they'd restrict you to four wired connections, but that goes with the question about the locked down configuration of the "mandatory" router.

I'm looking at the 15mbit/2mbit service, which would cost the same as my current Comcast 6000/384 service. When they say "up to 15mb", it makes me wonder what the real bandwidth will be on the service. I'd sure hate to swap and find out it's 2mbit!

I'm stunned at the complexity of the installation, they install a lot of equipment to make this happen, I'm also curious about reliability of the connections.

Hi! I have a 5400 square foot home that is very long. I have verizon Fios coming into a demarc in the center of the house and am using their actiontec router with wireless. Connected to the router are 3 computers networked via Cat5e. My problem is that I am looking to extend the range of the wireless on the actiontec. I was thinking of using a Linksys WAP54GP (Wireless-G Access Point with Power Over Ethernet) to connect to one of the WIRED rooms at one end of the house, and another at the other end. My goal is to have the POE WAPs fill in the coverage and to provide some coverage outside by the pool as well. Does this sound like a logical solution? If need be, I can bypass the actiontec wireless capabilities and use it as a router only. Thoughts, suggestions?

A:Verizon FIOS and WAP

I use plain routers wired to the main box to do the same thing here. Here's how I connect them, any secondary routers you're using as AP's would be configured in the same manner. Obviously, if you need POE, you'll have to use something that supports that capability.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN por... Read more

There is 1 POP email account
There are 3 users, and they all use that same account
First user monitor email all day and replies to all
2-nd and 3-rd users opens outlook 5-10 times a day
No matter if the 1-st user replied email or not then 2-nd user opens outlook he gets unread mail in inbox
Is it possible to do that if 1-st users replies to mail, everybody else would see same thing in their inbox ?
I mean if 1-st user replied, 2-nd and 3-rd would get mail with tiny red arrow (symbol of replied email)
if 1-st user reads but don't reply an email, everybody else would get mails marked as read in their inbox

You can only leave the message on the server marked as read, but it won't have a reply status because the message has to be downloaded to Outlook first, and the reply is done from the message in Outlook. POP3 is a one-way protocol, from the server to the client. IMAP actually stores the messages on the server, which is why you can see the reply status.

How do i determine what servers i use, i would like to set up Outlook Express, but how do i find out what the
pop3, imap, and smot servers are
i have a yahoo account i liked t ouse, and an aol one, if anyone knows where i can find out the servers, i would really like to know.

thxs in advance for any help

A:Pop3, Imap

You can usually find the correct addresses, as well as how to correctly set up an OExpress account, on the provider's Help pages (look under the FAQ section, or search for POP Email). Not all providers (especially with free accounts---Google mail is an exception) provide POP E-mail access, so read the instructions carefully to make sure they apply to the service you are getting.Regards,John

Hi Folks,
I have been using these settings in Win. Live Mail for my Gmail account.

I have WLM on both my pc's using the same settings.
As shown in my image, if I get a message on my Laptop, Gmail archives it. Now when I use my Desktop pc, I don't get the same message again. This is exactly how I like it.
Unfortunately Gmail now classes POP3 as not secure, and suggests changing to IMAP.
Your views on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks to Mozilla classing my addons for checking my 2 mail accounts as unsuitable, I had to add my AOL mail to WLM which I find to be a PITA.
I first tried it using POP3 but !!! so I changed to IMAP.
Now, I get all mail appearing on both pc's making it hard to remember what I have replied to. If I delete one message from AOL on my Laptop, it also gets deleted from my AOL account but not from my Desktop pc.
No comments re AOL please unless its some setting I've missed.

A:XPS 8700 needed UEFI secure boot disabled to complete Windows 10 anniversary update can't enable UEFI secure boot now

If your computer was running WIndows 10 without any issues prior to downloading the Anniversary update, then you would not have had to change any settings in the bios to install the update. The UEFI and Secure Boot settings are to enable booting with a USB or DVD to install Windows.
Disable Legacy Boot Mode and Enable UEFI
Start the computer and TAP the F2 key to enter the bios. Once in the bios Press F9 to Restore the bios to the Default Settings. F10 to save changes and exit. You could have a hardware problem. To run a hardare diagnostics on the computer you would start the computer and TAP the F5 key. Insert a cd/dvd in the optical drive for running the diags.

My internet connection has been dropping in and out for years. Since Friday I haven't had any connection on one of my kindle, spotty on android phone and spotty on other kindle that does come back when I refresh the connection.
I used to have spotty connection on my laptop before it broke.

I called verizon today and they told me I need to upgrade to fios. They will replace my linksys router and modem and install new ones.
Is this a good idea? Will my internet be smooth now and I won't have connectivity issues anymore?

I just want my devices to stay connected all the time.

Thanks for the help.

I have Verizon FIOS. I am using their Actiontec router. I turned on WPA2. All is working well. I wanted to turn it off to help diagose a problem with one device. I can see no way to turn it off. To turn it on you click WPA2. you put in an 8 digit "password" etc and it works. There seems to be no way to turn it off. Am I overlooking something? I tried deleting the password. but it gives you an error and remindes you the password needs to be 8 characters. I am probably overlooking something pretty easy but any help appreciated. Thanks

okay, i have a room upstairs in the house. The house is wired for verizon fios cable tv and fios internet. In my room I already have a tv and get fios digital cable, just fine. I am getting a desktop soon. My question is , ""does the internet and the cable tv service come into my room through the same coax or will i need a new line run into my room to get a wired hookup of my own"". I dont want to go wireless, because I am having a lot of probs with my laptop now. Im trying to avoid running an ethernet from the downstairs router. Help!!!!!!!! please and thanyou.

A:verizon fios connection

You will need to run a wire from the router, the cable only brings the TV. It's true that there is encapsulated IP data on the wire as well, but it's strictly for the router.

This site has been great for an old Luddite like me. Does anyone here know anything about Verizon FIOs and how I can use the DVR feature? Do I have to pay extra for that? I tried following the instructions to set the box to record an upcoming show but nothing is getting recorded. I set the cable box light on when the recording is supposed to start but there's nothing getting recorded? Thanks!

Just had Verizon install Verizon TV, Internet, and telephone service. I am experiencing intermittent loss of internet and telephone service. Verizon has made a field visit and it was my luck that the system was working at that time. Since then it has gone down and with out any explanation the service resumes. There is no discernable reason for all this. If you call my telephone number when its is down you get a message " all circuits are busy' try again later Erica 23 network"

Does anyone have a clue what is going on?

A:Verizon Fios Installation

No, but hold their feet to the fire. FiOS is the flagship service right now, and around here they're tripping over themselves to make sure it's working and reliable.

We got FIOS few months ago. And recently we got an Apple MacBook Pro. And we are having trouble with the wireless. The router is downstairs, in a TV room/basement, but most time is spent one floor above. I’m not familiar enough with Mac OS, so for what I know, I can't find out what the signal strength is. But the laptop has trouble connecting to the wireless network. So 2 questions, is anyone else having trouble and what have you done to fix? And the other thing, if the signal strength really is weak on the second floor, what can I get to use just as a repeater? I don’t necessary what to add another wireless network, but extend the current one.

A:Verizon FIOS wireless and Mac

Personally, I'd just increase the signal strength of the existing router, it's the more trouble-free method.

Hawking Tech has a number of products that will help you increase your wireless range. The root page is Hawking Hi-Gain™ WiFi Range Extending Products.

Some of the more interesting products are this Hawking [HSB2] Hi-Gain WiFi Signal Booster, which can be used on either end of a wireless connection to boost the signal power.

Another way to increase your signal strength is by the use of hi-gain antennas. You can choose from omni-directional or directional models, here are a some examples.

Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna

[HAO14SD] Outdoor Hi-Gain 14dBi Directional Antenna Kit
This is just a sample of available products, many people have hi-gain antennas with similar specifications, but I haven't seen any other suppliers of signal boosters.

So I bought a Netgear router to use over verizon's router, because their router has been terrible for me lately. I looked up a couple guides and tried to bridge the fios router so i could use the netgear one on it, but i could never get it to work, the wireless signal from the new router always showed as no internet. Any ideas?

Since Verizon disconnects its service through the use of a signal, I was wondering if anyone out there knows to which hardware level the signal is sent? Is the service terminated at the ONT, router, or STBs?

Also on a separate note. . . If Verizon can access and make all these changes to the programming of there equipment through the internet, and we know that there are people out there more than willing to do the same thing on there own, why don't i see more people asking how they can re program the boxes for anything other than converting a standard set top box into a dvr? Back in the day you could just unplug your cable box at the end of a free preview weekend and plug it back in a couple days later and you would still have the extra channels

A:How does Verizon disconnect FIOS?

I can assure you that you won't get FiOS working if it's disconnected, it's disabled at the Telco CO. Your fiber is dead if the service is inactive.

I suggest you take another gander at the TSG Rules, because bypassing restrictions to receive services you don't pay for is theft.

- The Gateway desktop can still connect to my network's SSID with the Trendnet Wireless LAN Configuration Utility.
- Both desktops can get to the internet, the web, and can get emails although they're not sync'ing with OsaSync.
- Neither PC can ping the other one although they can self-ping

I have an older laptop (Dell Latitude 5150) with an external Linksys USB wireless adapter. My parents recently purchased the Verizon FIOS wiress router and it has screwed up everything. When i install the Linksys USB adapter on my laptop it doesn't pick up the Verizon FIOS router's name or anything at all. When I plug the old Linksys router into the Verizon one the laptop picks it up but only gets sent the packets and rarely or never recieves them.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this issue?
