Word 2007 Show/Hide wrong symbols

Q: Word 2007 Show/Hide wrong symbols

- not terribly good grammar in that header... sorry!
My problem is in my very long document (92,000 words), into which I've just replaced a font with another, that I downloaded from a reputable site.
I tell you about the reputableness because the problem I'm now experiencing I was having the other day, in a slightly different format...
When I turn on Show/Hide, which I do often, instead of seeing small dots representing character spaces, there are empty squares. (Sorry, I haven't been here for ages, and have forgotten how to post a screen-grab as evidence.)
A couple of days ago, the problem - now gone - was that in tables I was seeing euro signs instead of the little round thinggy with the four prongs.
So I would seem to have some deep-seated... SOMETHING going on, yeah?
Can anyone help, please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

A:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

I am using Word 2000 and was trying to add an address to my mailing labels as a document. I'm not sure what key I hit, but now all the paragraph and indent symbols are showing up on ALL my Word documents and some of page breaks are coming in the wrong place on the labels. How can I hide or remove these symbols. I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but not advanced, either. I suppose that would make me an intermediate user.

Inserted symbols in Word 2007 (the fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc) were reading correctly a week ago. When I bring the files back now, the symbols are gone (replaced with little rectangles). Other symbols, such as the one for degrees, are unaffected. Any ideas how to fix and prevent this from happening again?

Whenever I use Word on a college computer, someone has invariably left that annoying Show/Hide option left on. What is it used for ?

Also, yesterday it appeared on the page but the button wasn't on the standard toolbar, nor could I find it when I searched through Add or Remove buttons so I had to move computer as I couldn't get it off screen. Can the Show/Hide option be accessed via the menu drop down bars also ?

A:That annoying Show/Hide button in Word

If the Show/Hide button isn't on the toolbar and you don't want to take the time to add it, use the Ctrl+Shift+* (8 key) to toggle it on and off.

It's used to check spaces between words and carriage returns. I find it handy but it can be annoying if you don't need those editing marks.

I am running Word 2007 on a PC with XP.
I am creating a series of student Maths exam papers comprising questions and answers.
I want the answers to follow each question but to have control over their visibility.
I have established two methods to hide the text.
i) In the Home tab change the font colour to white
ii) Select the required text, right click and in the Font option select hidden. To reveal hidden text in the Home tab select .
This has the unfortunate effect of throwing out the formatting so I have been using method i) for hiding text.
However many of the answers involve graphs/Pie charts etc which I import and embed.
These cannot be hidden by any of the methods above.
Is there a way to hide these objects?

Hello kf10,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know of a way to do this in word. Only way I know to accomplish this in word is to select all the answers, leaving the ans) portion. Hit delete, and print the page. Once it starts printing, you can use Ctrl.+Z to undo the deletion and then print the parents copies. Or, if you've saved a copy of the doc., you could print the parents page then select (hold down ctrl to multiple select) and delete the answers/print the students copies and when you close the doc. don't save the changes.

Hope this helps.

I need to check the styles used on headings, lists, etc. in a document that has hundreds of styles. In previous editions of Word, you could simply click on the relevant text and the style would appear in the formatting toolbar (just as it would display the font). In Word 2007 I can't seem to find this type of display. The closest I get is by opening the styles area, but this means having to scroll through the hundreds of styles to find the one that is highlighted. I basically need to be able to see very quickly which style has been applied - is there a way to do this in Word 2007?

Hey guys,

Having a very odd problem with Word 2007. On all of my headings I have chapter numbers, so when I add a caption to a figure or table it writes Figure 13.1 etc. This is correct all through my document however now I am doing the number in chapter 14 and it is breaking. In the dialog it gets the chapter and figure number correct i.e. 14.1, however when the caption is inserted it writes 0.1 instead. If I then correct this and change it to 14.1 when I insert the next figure it writes 0.2 and the previous one get changed to 14.0.1. This is driving me crazy, anyone seen anything else like this?

Today I was viewing an e-mail. It had a jpeg file, which I opened, & also some text. I wanted to save the text as a joke, so I set about rearranging the words (you know how in some e-mail messages the words are not lined up & the text is different colors?...). I was almost done, & all of a sudden (I don't even recall hitting a particular key) the whole message was full of those < and > signs & those paragraph symbols, in front of & behind every line. I have Outlook 98 & use Word 97 as my e-mail editor. So I checked my view menu, thinking I had somehow changed to page layout, but I was still in normal view. Then when I went out of my e-mail program to check my Word program, it does the same thing in new, blank documents & also my previously saved documents--little paragraph symbols before & after every line! I thought I had a virus, so I deleted the jpeg & e-mail, then ran an antivirus program on both my hard drives & on all my Outlook files--no viruses found. So how can I get rid of those symbols in all my documents? It makes my Word program virtually unusable. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Know Your Numbers
It is crucial to "Know Your Numbers" with respect to Blood Pressure. Life-threatening complications can develop over a course of years when hypertension exists. Increased pressure on the inner walls of blood vessels make the vessels less flexible over time and more vulnerable to the buildup of fatty deposits in a process known as atherosclerosis. Hypertension also forces the heart to work harder to pump adequate blood throughout the body. This extra work causes the muscles of the heart to enlarge, and eventually the enlarged heart becomes inefficient in pumping blood. An enlarged heart may lead to heart failure, in which the heart can not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.

The most common symbols can be accessed in Word by clicking INSERT >> SYMBOL. If you need additional symbols you can also click the Windows start button and then click RUN and then type CHARMAP You can select various symbols and characters and copy them directly to your clipboard to paste into other applications.

If you want to turn off the fraction feature altogether in Word you can click Tools >> AutoCorrect and then select the AutoFormat tab and uncheck "Fractions 1/2 with Fraction character ."

Another option is to press SHIFT + F9 to turn on your field codes and then type the following inside the curly braces eq \f(x,y) (just replace the x and y with your actual numerator and denominator) and then press SHIFT + F9 again to convert to a fraction.

Hi Everyone,
Right i'm more hardware orientated so not sure on this one. In word '97 (i know, ancient) my friend is trying to insert special characters and suchlike.
Now when she goes to Insert - Symbol and the windows appears, half of the characters are missing all that is in the space is a small square. Sometimes she can see the symbol/character but on inserting it is either a square or space that is inserted.
I'm no expert but on reinstalling Word the problem is the same, could it be the installed Fonts on the system that are corrupt or does the problem lie elsewhere.
Cheers Guys

How does one get character map symbols to show up in MS-Word 2000?

In Windows XP, Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map will show the symbols in the character map for a given font. After clicking on a symbol, the keystroke combination will show in the lower right (for example, ALT+0230 for ''). So, far, I've been copying and pasting the symbol from the character map to get it to appear in text (as I did here to get the '' to show up).

But this is going to get tedious. I can't figure out how to get it to appear by using keystrokes. Pressing the ALT key (either the left one or the right one) and typing the numbers (e.g., 0230) doesn't bring anything on the MS-Word screen, even when the font matches that of the character map. So, I need a step-by-step set of instructions on how to key-in ALT+0230, for example, on the keyboard and get '' to appear on the screen.

And to make it even easier, there must be a way to map a symbol or a set of keystrokes to a keyboard key. But, I can't figure out how. Can someone give me some directions?

A:MS-Word 2000/Character Map Symbols

It should work, unless your keyboard driver does not support it for some strange reason.

You are using the number pad keys I assume, and not the numeric keys above the main keys? (only Number Pad keys are usually supported on many standard keyboards)

the vote being: Miller-YES, Ensley-YES, Kane-YES.

Parks and Recreation Director John Knight was present.

ITEM NO. 1: The drainage at 18th and Urish was discussed.

Those present were: Public Works Deputy Director Tom Flanagan, Office Administrator Jane Rezac and Engineer Mike Engler with Bartlett and West Engineers.

After printing on 3/20:
the vote being: Mill % "
bjbj%% !2 G G - l r
Engineer Mike Engler with Bartlett and West Engineers.

In word the spaces are boxes and this cover 2 and a half pages.

Thanks for the help.

A:MS Word part of document changes to symbols.

Does the word document just print like that and look normal when on screen? if so it is probably the printer drivers that are causing it. Can they print to another printer to see.

Hi - I am desperate and need to locate help for finding the codes using the "ALT" plus zero and numbers to enter symbols in a Microsoft word document. I cannot find my old "cheat" book.

My system:
MS Windows XP Pro SP2
MS Office XP Pro SP3

I convert PDF files to Word documents. When I do, however, I find the symbol, which Word informs me is the "NOT SIGN" placed randomly within the converted text. The symbol has the character code 00AC. It looks like a horizontal line with another line attached to its right side going perpendicularly downwards (like an L turned upside down and the base horizontal line pointing downwards).

Is there any way of removing these without having to scan through pages and pages of text and removing them manually? Microsofts TechNet pages are of little use in this matter.

Thanks in advance.
